Close your eyes and listen to Juan Manuel Chavez launch into the Prelude of Bach's Cello Suite No. 1, and you would never guess that, instead of spruce and maple, his instrument is crafted from an old oil can, a beef tenderizing tool, and a discarded pasta making device—all of it scavenged from the landfill that surrounds his home in Paraguay.

Chavez is a cellist in the Landfill Harmonic Orchestra in Cateura, an Asunción slum where bottle caps, door keys, and paint cans have been given new purpose. Under the supervision of local musician Favio Chávez, these utterly impoverished kids make beautiful music on instruments constructed almost entirely out of materials reclaimed from the dump.

The Human Side of Russian Dashboard Cameras

Many Russian cars are outfitted with dashboard cameras to protect drivers against insurance fraud. These cameras have caught all sorts of crazy happenings -- car accidents, low-flying jets, insurance scam attempts, meteors, and plane crashes -- leading many to believe that Russia is a place where crazy shit pretty much happens constantly.

But Russia's dash cams have also captured many more tender moments -- people hopping out of their cars to help old ladies across the street, looking after little kids who wandered into the street, pushing cars out of snowbanks, etc.

In the Shadow of Chernobyl

On the 27th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster...

I guess you could say that I've been living in the shadow of Chernobyl for the last 8 years, since its about 110 km or bit over 70 miles from Kiev. Before moving here, I spent a good deal of time pondering the question “is living this close to Chernobyl a good idea”? I pondered this question even though there have been more than 2 million people living within the this 110 km radius every day for the last 27 years. In the end, I decided that I would join the 2.8 million people that call Kiev home.

But while I was figuratively “in the shadow of Chernobyl,” I had not literally been “in the shadow of Chernobyl.” That changed last year with a 2 day visit to the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Pripyat was built from the ground up as a Soviet "model city," and as such had attractions and amenities that many cities it's size just did not have. This indoor recreation center was one such amenity.

The "Russian Woodpecker"

The Chernobyl area has other sites of interest besides the Chernobyl reactor and the abandoned city of Pripyat. The Chernobyl region was also host to a sophisticated over-the-horizon radar system, part of Soviet anti-ballistic missile defense systems. This system was known under various monikers: Chernobyl 2 (not to be confused with the Chernobyl #2 reactor), Duga-3, the Russian Woodpecker, and the Steel Yard.

The Russian Woodpecker was a notorious Soviet radio signal that could be sporadically heard on the shortwave radiobands worldwide between July 1976 and December 1989. It sounded like a sharp, repetitive tapping noise, at 10 Hz, giving rise to the "Woodpecker" name. Hammer & Sickle

It's time for me to put up some more of my Chernobyl and Pripyat photos from last year, first, because it will soon be the anniversary of the Chernobyl explosion, and second, because it will soon be the anniversary of my visit last year.

Chernobyl and Pripyat are enormously rewarding photo destinations, yet, they are also enormously frustrating photo destinations too. The coat of arms of the USSR, seen here, tops the tallest building in Pripyat, and to capture this shot I was 16 floors below the level of the subject, more than half a mile away, and off to the lower left of the subject to minimize trees blocking the subject. I had to do a lot of work to present the photo perspective as straight on as I could, but it's not perfect. Maybe it's the best that could be done given the circumstances?
