Back To The Drawing Board

This week I went back to the drawing board. I really don't know why I don't draw more. I really enjoy it and find it so much more relaxing and meditative than painting. I found some sources for poses so I can practice my figurative work before my workshop with the live model next month.

I will likely attempt a painting of the conte drawing Reclining Nude. I bought another pack of coloured papers. I want to do more conte work.

Weekly classes continue to go well. I'm frustrated and learning. I think that's a good thing. If I wasn't frustrated I know I wouldn't be challenging myself.

McMillan's Herd

McMillan's Herd - 11x14" - Oil on linen panel.

I based this on a photograph I took last June. I did this for one of my homework assignments where we were supposed to use line, mass, and point brushstrokes. We've got company coming for supper tomorrow, and then I've got to deliver work to the Lacombe Art Show, so my painting days will be on hold.

If you're in Alberta and looking for something exciting to do this weekend, do check out the Lacombe Art Show, it's one of the provinces best spring art sales.

I reworked this older painting, for one of my course projects. We were required to find an old painting where we'd painted it thinly and redo it with thicker paint. Canadian Wheatfield was based on my photograph by the same name. I'd liked the painting but knew it was poor quality because of all the smoothing and how thin the paint was, so I was eager to see if I could do a better job of it. It's hard to judge from this small image, but it's much better now.

Foothills Skyscape

Foothills Skyscape - 24x12" - Acrylic on canvas

This was done mostly with the palette knife. I've really come to love palette knife painting and think I paint better with it than with a paint brush!

Since we are still having snow I spent a bit of time today catching up on posting work to my website. There are new paintings posted to all the galleries except Small Works. If you look let me know what you think! http://www.robertamurray.ca/galleries/

Ruffled Feathers

This poor little bluebird is so sad because it's snowing again and it can't find any flies. He's wishing there would be blue skies and sunshine, like there should be on any fine spring day.

8x10" Oil on canvas panel

I think there will eventually be a series of bird paintings. I'm trying to make up my mind whether they should be more caricature-like, like this one, or more impressionist like the other bluebird one I posted the other day. Or maybe there will be a bit of both.

Of course I'm still working on my Vision Quest series, painting classes, learning, experimenting, playing, photography, and so much more. I need to live another hundred years after I die just so I can get it all done!

Mountain Bluebirds

Mountain Bluebirds - 11x14" - Oil on canvas panel

It's official. I have bird fever (not to be confused with bird flu). Bird fever manifests itself with symptoms such as: lack of concentration, strong desire to be outside, joy, excitement, uncontrollable urge to explore vast distances in search of winged creatures.

And thus begins my favorite time of year: migration!

Buffalo Dancer

Buffalo Dancer - 16x20" - Acrylic on canvas

This didn't end up looking anything like what I'd intended it to look like. I had started out with the intention of doing an abstract piece, but started working on the sky first, and then the prairie scene started to unfold, and pretty soon my abstract figure was not going to work as planned.

I've run into a problem painting abstract since I started my classes. Oh well...I'm not entirely dissatisfied with how it turned out.

On the home front, my DH is gone on a business trip for the next few days. I'm taking advantage of time alone to get our taxes done so when (IF) the weather improves I can head out on my annual birding/photography (and now painting) trip.

Who knew there were so few options for Canadian tax software available for a Mac. I tried one thismo... more »

Benalto Farm

Benalto Farm - Oil on panel - 11x14"

I had a rare chance to get out for a day of plein air painting with a friend last week. Despite the cooler than anticipated temperatures, cloudy sky, and driving far too long in search of the perfect location, we had a great day. Saw a couple robins, lots of geese, and some great scenery to come back to in warmer weather.

Here's a question to you other plein air painters. How do you choose your location - especially in regards to bathroom breaks? This is not so much an issue in summer when there are leaves on the bushes, but in winter or on a prairie location where trees are usually only found in farm yards, this is an issue. It's an odd topic to address, but........what do you do?

I am in search of the best pochade for location or plein air painting. Who would like to weigh in with their experiences, likes, dislikes, etc.? My requirement is the pochade must be able to accommodate a variety of sizes of panels up to 11x14" (or at least accommodate 8x10 and 11x14").

I know many will probably list the Soltek as the best, but I have already ruled this one out due to a combination of price and reported problems with delicacy and tripod legs.

Figurative 1

I was doing a little experiment of working pastel over a watercolour underpainting. I'm not sure it was all that successful. There are a few problems. Oh well....that's what experimenting is for.

I have an opportunity to spend a week with Zhaoming Wu, but I know my painting abilities are not even close to being good enough. I feel this is an opportunity I can't miss, despite my skill level. I need to spend the next month or two practicing figurative drawing so I don't make a fool of myself if I actually get in.

Prairie Winds

Prairie Winds - 11x14" - Oil on canvas panel

I'm taking off for three days of painting - my weekly class Friday and then a two day workshop Saturday and Sunday.

After this weekend I'm hoping spring will cooperate with me in arriving because I really am itching to get out to do a little prairie painting and photography.

Winter Plein Air

No signs of spring around here, but we did finally get our temperatures up near the freezing mark so I decided I was sick of waiting for warmer weather, and copying others work. Time to head outside for a little plein air painting. Normally I find our landscape unmotivating for painting. Mostly because we're forested and a) I don't like our kind of forest (too busy and cluttered) and b) I can't paint trees well (I get hung up on details). But I figured this would be a good exercise in simplifying.

I am actually pleased with how this turned out, except I have to fix the deer tracks that head out of the picture frame. Wasn't thinking about that at the time. So I'll go down to the studio after supper and fix it.

In my homework, and during my classes, pretty much all of our work has been based on the work of old masters. I know it's common practice to reproduce master works during study, and it's been like that for a hundred years or more. I know there are lots of artists who will sign their name to these reproductions and sell them - whether they were done as part of a learning program or not.

So my question is; when is it okay to do that and when is it not.

I should perhaps back up and say that my internal compass doesn't swing to that being okay. I don't even want to work from another's photograph. Yet I am doing the homework and using other paintings to learn from. And I am learning.

Take this picture as an example. It's based on Richard Schmid's painting Captain John's House. I made enough changes for itn... more »

What A Week

Tuesday evening I was going to go out for my evening walk and hang our wildlife cam up again. As is typical for spring our weather goes from sunny with temperatures above zero to snow and cold, and back again. It's unpredictable so I try to get out to enjoy any sunny days we have. The results of the fluctuations and on and off snowfall then melting is ice.

I rounded the corner of the house and went down hard on the ice. Thankfully nothing was broken - but I did have to go for x-rays to make sure. I did a number on my hand and have had to have it in a brace all week. It's my right hand of course, so I haven't been able to do much of anything.

I had to hang my show on Thursday. Thankfully my husband had booked the day off work to help. I would have been hooped without him because I couldn't even carry the work into the gallery - and thisp... more »

Itsiki'tsiisaokii

Itsiki'tsiisaokii (Sagebrush Meadow On Floodplain) - 12x12" - Acrylic on Canvas

This is more floodplain than sagebrush meadow! It might seem like an odd title for this painting, but the truth is I painted over a piece I didn't like and didn't want to paint the back of the canvas to hide the previous title. I figured if nothing else the title would make people think and (maybe) scratch their heads a little!

I had a bit of an 'a ha' moment today. Since I've started working in oils I haven't really been all that enamoured with acrylics - but I have a lot of them and don't want to waste them. Acrylics are good for when there's not a lot of time and I want to have a quick and easy clean up.

I did this painting as a quick study with an eye to doing a larger one in oils. I wanted to make sure the... more »

Homework

This week I decided to tackle a portrait for my painting class value study. I had a choice between some landscapes and the William Paxton portrait (lady in hat). I knew the portrait would be harder and wanted to push myself.

You can read more about the trials, tribulations, and revelations of this week's painting exercises on my blog: http://www.robertamurray.ca/painting-is-hard/

The Bay Horse

Photography is still happening here, even though it hasn't looked like it lately. I just finished uploading a batch of new images to my agent. That is the plan for this year afterall......the majority of my work is going directly to agents.

I was reminded today that I still have an arts career that needs my attention. Despite how poorly I feel my painting is going right now, I am earning my living as an artist. Two pay cheques this week, and a humbling letter from a grade 8 student who is doing a school report on me has made my week slightly less frustrating!

Still Life In Blue

I've been doing a lot of value studies for my painting classes this month. What's become clear is where my weakness is with painting. Colour. I can judge values well in monochrome, but as soon as I have to start mixing colours things fall apart.

I'm seriously considering banning colour for an entire year and doing nothing but value studies, like they used to do in the classical European ateliers.

STOLEN CAMERA GEAR!

One of my biggest fears came into reality yesterday.

My camera bag, full of almost everything I own has been stolen. (except for a 200€ flashgun I accidentally left at home).

It all happened while I was having lunch, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in a small bar in the city center of Milan. My backpack was between my chair (which I never left) and a solid concrete wall; I still can’t believe they succeeded in taking that cumbersome 10+kg backpack without me even noticing.
Side note – just to give you a smile: I was drinking still water at the time.

It’s pretty hard to get insured if you’re not a professional here in Italy, so no chance of getting ANY money back.

Just below my personal information you will find a list of the stolen items; some are definitely uncommon like my infra red converted 5D MKII(their are n... more »

Winter Road

Winter Road - 11x14" - Oil on canvas panel

This is based on my photograph by the same name. I was working with a limited palette of ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, and white, so the colours don't match the photograph. I had a lot of trouble with the trees. I'm trying to see the overall value shapes not the details - it's hard!

Prairie House - Take 2

Prairie House - 11x14" - Acrylic on panel

I wasn't happy with this painting. The more I looked at it the more I knew I should fix it instead of toss it to the failure pile. So I went back to the drawing board. Warmed the colour palette and fixed some of my house angles. Better, I think.

I got word last night that two of my Vision Quest paintings have been accepted into the Calgary Stampede's western art auction. This will be my first time participating in this portion of the CS's art event. Previously I have been represented in their photography section.

I had given myself a goal to get into their art section next year. I tried this year and got in. I love it when I meet my goals earlier than planned!

Prairie House

11x14" - Acrylic on canvas

My two day uninterrupted time home alone died a slow death today. My husband attempted to get to the city but turned around an hour into the drive and came home. My disappointment spilled over into my painting. I was much happier with this yesterday. I think I may have reached a point where I no longer like working with acrylic and I'm disappointed with the resulting paintings. (Of course I realize it's probably not the paints fault.)

Sneak peek at what's on the canvas this weekend.

The spouse is off to the city tomorrow for a meeting Monday and we're expecting a snowmageddon, which means I have two days at home alone completely uninterrupted. I do have to start framing for my upcoming show, but I'm hoping to do some reading, watch a painting video, paint, Not cook!, and work on my homework.

Still Life #1

Still Life #1 - 5x7" - Oil on canvas

Today I feel like a real painter. I had gnashing teeth, scraping out, repainting, angst with this painting. I know it's still not perfect, but I'm happier with it now and am going to leave it alone and call it done.

I learned a lot doing this painting. The ability to see correctly is hard work. It is one thing to see as a photographer, quite another to see as a painter. Sure there's some overlap, but the observation skills of the painter need more precision.

If anyone's interested I blogged about this process and included photographs of the progression. http://www.robertamurray.ca/still-life-1/

This time I really do have a problem. The pear appears to be floating. I'm not sure how to fix it, without ruining the rest of the painting. Do I make it bigger, or leave the size but make the values darker to make it recede? There are enough parts that I like in this that I really want to try to salvage it.

Sheep In The Meadow

Sheep In The Meadow - 11x14" - Oil on panel

I was going to turn this to the vertical format before I started but decided I wanted some width to this. Now that I'm done, I wish I'd gone vertical. My horizon line has ended up too close to middle. So I'm asking for opinions.

Should I risk ruining this to adjust the horizon line, or leave it be? If I adjust I'd just bring the distant hills up higher, and maybe put some highlighted meadow just beyond the bushes.

Morning Has Broken

8x10" - Oil on panel

Based on my photograph by the same name. This painting came about after my Friday painting class. I had done an underpainting for this, but the instructor wanted to show how to approach it in a direct manner so he did a small demo using my photograph.

The colours he put on first were straight tube colours - much brighter and purer than any colours in my photograph. After some discussion things clicked as to why I've been so frustrated when trying to recreate my photographs. I'm trying to mix the exact colours in the photograph and ending up with flat and boring paintings.

He used values and warm/cool reference to the colours and left it at that. I was able to come home and finally paint a piece which I am happy with, and that I feel captures the mood of the original photograph. The original isn'tb... more »

The Seed Planter Study

I'm really beginning to understand the value of these value studies and simplifying. I sketched this out first and was drawing in all the lines and shading of the clothing. But when I moved to the value study I was supposed to do it small and quickly, so I had to abandon detail and really try to see the values. I needed to lower the value of the arm in the lap. I'll probably do another study and then dare I attempt a colour painting of this?

Lady By The Sea

This is my second attempt at this painting, and I'm still not really happy with it. The assignment was to loosen up - so it's probably fine as far as the assignment goes. I think maybe part of the reason I'm not happy is that it's not my photo and not my style. I know it's good to stretch and work outside my comfort zone, but.....I don't have to like it! I am learning, so it's all good.

A warm Saturday evening hello. We had a beautiful spring like day today. I know our mild weather is just a tease. March and April are usually hellish around here, so I'm enjoying it while I can.

This photograph was taken last spring and reminds me of what's to come. I usually do a prairie tour in Spring, and although I have a busy schedule already, I'm hoping I'll get out again this year.

Rocky Mountain Grain Bins is available on paper, canvas, acrylic, or metal. Framed or unframed. Options to suit every budget.

I'm redoing the cove painting I posted yesterday because I think the values are too weak and it's too blue. This time I'm checking my values along the way by taking a photo and converting to B&W. This allows me to check composition and values at the same time.

Composition is tricky. What works for a photograph doesn't always work for a painting. Theory talks about leading the eye through the painting. There's a clear path made by the lighter values, but I don't have a clear focal area, and am not sure if this really works. If it doesn't how do your reconcile staying true to what you see with making a good painting?

By The Cove

By The Cove - 8x10" - Oil on canvas paper

I'm doing some workshops and stuff over the next few months, so you're going to be seeing some work that "isn't me". I even bought some fruit for a still life today. Although I have no intention of becoming a painter of still life I need to do for learning. I am hoping by the end of the year I'll have a much stronger voice and better ability to portray my story through paint. And if I'm lucky, I may even produce some decent work along the way - even if it's not my story being told!

Huge Discount On Clearance Prints

I've been cleaning up my studio and am listing a number of gallery prints at huge discounts. This is a one time sale on existing prints and does not apply to new or custom work. Once the print sells, that's it. No reprints are available at these prices.

With new gallery representation my prices on regular prints have been raised, so this is a significant offer that won't be repeated. Get 'em while the getting's are good!

If you create editions (or maybe even if you don't), how do you keep track of your images? I need a better system. Do you use a program, certain software, the old fashion pen and paper? What do you record?

My goal for February is to find a workable solution for tracking editions.
