Gailen Mapes66,348Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera  F-H - 25 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to July 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting June 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From the archives: Tokyo in infra-red

Four years ago I had the loan of an infra-red converted Nikon D300 and spent a few weeks shooting various subjects.

This shot has been published in several magazines, most recently in Air Mexico's inflight magazine.

I first used infra-red back in the film days when mostly it was the back and white film I was shooting.

Using the Nikon was a blessed release from the myriad of challenges of infra-red film, which included....

..wrapping the camera in tin-foil to stop y¥the heat from your face fogging the film

..wrapping the developing tank in foil to avoid the heat from your hands fogging the film

etc etc

For white balance when using this Nikon DSLR I was using the 'custom' feature and setting WB from any nearby patch of green grass. Itc... more »

My new Soundcloud Page

Haven't made any tunes since about 1999 so I got GarageBand yesterday and am getting back into making some music.

The two tracks there now are just me playing and getting used to the software and playing the synths on the Mac keyboard. Sometime later this week I will get a MIDI keyboard for the laptop. Much easier.

Anyway, if you have time.. check it out.

Thanks.

For white balance when using this Nikon DSLR I was using the 'custom' feature and setting WB from any nearby patch of green grass. It created shots that were predominantly of a brown spectrum, which allowed me - through Photoshop - to create 'false colour' shots like this.

Great fun andI would love to get one of my cameras converted, which is easy enough and not crazy expensive.

Music photography in Tokyo, Japan: Little Dynamite Sex & Android Baby

Last night I went out to shoot two bands at Shibuya's 'Aube' venue.

Once upon a time all I did was music photography.

Over the years I have shot pics of the likes of Joe Strummer, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Issac Hayes and a whole feast of others.

Gotta say, it’s nice to be back in front of the stage. I plan to make it a regular thing from now on.

At the link below, there is a gallery with a load of last night’s shots. None have seen Photoshop but they have had a little tweak in Nikon’s ViewNX software, then just exported to JPEG.

Fashion photography in Tokyo: Mari Hirao in colour

Another shot from our very brief little test shoot yesterday. The light in the Hikarie Building is amazing from around 4.30pm in the summer, streaming in through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows.

Was shooting this to get the light just under the blind flaring straight into the lens. Really helped the summery feeling of the shot.

Next time I will take a cloth with me, to wipe all the hand-prints off of the window! :-)

Fashion model in Tokyo: first shoot with Mari Hirao

Mari and I are doing a shoot next week but we met up today in Shibuya to choose some clothes.

I couldn't resist one quick photo shoot with her whilst we were in this part of town.

So, we headed to my favourite building in Shibuya - the Hikarie building - to make a couple of quick shots.

This one was shot in monochrome in the camera but we just edited it quickly together, using a preset I made in Nik's Analog Efex Pro 2.

Fashion photography workshop with Hasselblad Japan

Delighted to announce the first of a series of workshops I will be doing in conjunction with Hasselblad.

This first one will be in Kyushu, Japan, at the end of October this year.

A variety of Hasselblads will be provided including the new 50C, CV50, and the 60MP backs. We may have the old square format CV16 [I think that was it's number]. We will have H5D bodies, maybe some old film bodies to put the new CV50 backs on.

ProFoto are providing the flash gear, Caterham have given us a sports-car for the workshop as well.

You can of course also bring your own cameras but there will plenty of gear for everyone.

8 participants, working in pairs with a camera for each pair.

We'll have the gear for shooting tethered as well.

Got this shot in before a meeting I was having in a building just by Mita Station, downtown Tokyo.

Great view of the Tokyo Tower. Moody sky. Storm broke a little while later.

The Driver

Spotted on a walk I did last week between Yurakucho and Shinbashi.

Good light coming down through a gap in the two sections of the railway bridge overhead. Just picking out the guy in the car.

The Toyota Century is the car of choice of both the slightly more old-school gangster and the politician.

This is the model that got made from 1997 onwards. Personally I like the older ones.

It's powered by a Japanese-built 5.0L V12 engine.

Now, THAT is a hat! - after the parade, Yokohama

I was down in Yokohama for a few hours yesterday, doing a lesson with one of my regular students.

Whilst we were in the little park in ChinaTown, we spotted this guy - whom we'd seen earlier but hadn't got a chance to shoot.

There was a festival and parade; this fella had been on his bicycle in the parade. Very happy and very happy to have his photo taken.

Myself and my student didn't stick around for the fireworks and by the time I'd got home and was in a position to get up on my roof and watch the lightning, I'd missed shooting the best of that.

No matter, you can't do everything in one day and getting a nice shot of this fella was good enough for me.

I did, however, get some nice shots of people battling the torrential rain near my local station.... more »

Panorama of Shibuya from Hikarie Building

This is a fairly rough and ready panorama, shot in just a couple of minutes yesterday.

This is a 4000px shot which you can zoom into:

- use your mouse wheel to zoom in or out
- click and drag to pan right, left, up or down

The weather was crap. I shot the original images in monochrome but they are obviously RAW so I have colour versions. But weather really was grey and horrible yesterday so there isn't much point in wasting time on making a colour stitch.

Next time I go back, when there weather is good, I will shoot with the D800E. I just had the D800 with me yesterday.

A few details about the shot:

Stitched using 40 images shot with Nikon D800
Shot with Nikkor 50mm f/1.2Ai @ f/5.6
Original, stitched image is 35,000 pixels wide

There are some very far from perfect sections in this image, caused by my not paying so much attention to dealing with window reflections and by shooting down at an angle through the glass, where the tickness of the glass was causing some of the blurring.

When I go back I will take my black cloth [from the large format camera, which I use to put over my head when shooting] and cut out all reflections.

Gonna pick a great day and go back and shoot a proper shot in colour, as Shibuya is changing so rapidly now with the removal of the Tokyu Store, Toyoko Line station. The Ginza line will soon be moved to another bridge and new skyscrapers started.

Exciting times in Shibuya. And this building is a great vantage point to watch it all from.

There is an 11,000 pixel version here at dropbox if you want to download it. The link is public so anyone can grab it from there, without needing an account. It's 17mb.. so it'll take a while to load. Be patient :-)

Fashion photography in Japan: Ruri in Mimitsu, Miyazaki-ken, Kyushu

One from the archives, as I was going through some files today and realised I hadn't really ever posted many on here from the shoot I did in May of last year with Ruri.

Details are just about to go live about the late autumn fashion workshop I will be doing in this same area, in conjunction with Hasselblad. I'll post a link to the news release on their website as soon as it's live.

This was a lovely spot but a little scary: top of a 10metre high harbour wall near the heritage village of Mimitsu.

This wasn't shot on a Hasselblad [I just like squares and I love the Hassie border, which was scanned in from an old slide I shot years ago].

There will be lots of lovely Hassies to play with on the workshop.... looking forward to it.

Vertical Panorama in the Shibuya River, shot in 2009

Seeing +Takahiro Yamamoto's recent shots from the Shibuya River reminded me of shots I did there back in 2009. My HDR work has come on a lot since then but I think this one's ok.

Interesting place which, with the development happening in Shibuya, is going to change a lot in the coming years.

Time tunnel: Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo, Japan

After recently shooting some frames just like this for a client, I found myself on the train gong over the Rainbow Bridge again yesterday; this time with a student, on our way to do some shooting in Odaiba.

Great spot for some long exposures. The end of the bridge nearest Odaiba, as it curves around to the right, being the best spot.

Shelly Han: shoots a special edition of Stekki Magazine in Tokyo

Great photos from Shelly Han, a political policy person and part-time portrait photographer who I did a tour/lesson for recently.

We approached the whole day as an assignment, from which I produced this special edition of the magazine.

If you are planning to visit Japan and want to find out more about how I might be able to help you, send me a message.

Manhattan from the Rockefeller Centre

This is part of a huge panorama I shot whilst in NYC last year. Made this one into a 16x9 widescreen crop as I liked it that way.

The original panorama I made was shot for Haneda Airport, as part of a series of pans and fashion shots made in various countries. They have had some of the content running on a 16metre video screen [made up of 36 4K panels] in the new terminal, which opened in April this year.

The pan that got made for the Haneda screen was just over 16000pixels at 72dpi. At 300dpi it was over 30,000pixels - and in colour, not monochrome.

Charlie goes analogue

It's not often that daddy shoots film but Charlie's patient enough to respond to the process. Even patient enough when the camera shooting the film is 4x5 Tachihara 'Hope', large-format camera.. that is a little more complicated and time-consuming than a point-and-shoot.

I'd trawled the second-hand camera shops for a while, trying to find a Polaroid 500 back that worked well. The first couple were duds; the rollers inside were slightly warped and when you pulled the print out, they squeezed only the edges of the chemical pack.

The back I have now is good and I found it with half a pack of film still inside; the Fuji FP100C a bit aged, which gave off a nice colour hue.

Well done for hanging in there whilst daddy was underneath the dark-cloth..... :-)

Fashion photography in Japan: Akari in Yokohama

This is one from a while back, shot just before the end of Akari's last trip to Japan. She'd asked me to shoot some pics with her new husband, Trevor. We did those and then I shot a few pics of Akari on her own.

We'd first met and worked together a few years before, when Akari modelled at a woskhop I ran - also in Yokohama. The first time we'd shot in the wonderful and ecclectic area of Yokohama called Hinodecho. You can see one of those pics here.

The Night Before the Workshop: Hyuga, Kyushu, Japan

Just dug this photo out of an old folder, as today I have been putting together some materials for another fashion workshop I am doing later this year in the same location.

This was shot with my Nikon D700 from my hotel room in Hyuga, the night before the fashion workshop I was running kicked off, back in October 2012.

This year's workshop will be announced soon but here's a few, teaser, details ahead of that announcement..

I'll be doing the workshop in conjunction with Hasselblad Japan and there'll be Hasselblad digital cameras for people to use on the workshop.

We'll have two models from Tokyo and probably one from Kyushu.

There'll be some great props and clothing to use, donated and loaned by sponsors. One awesome prop has four wheels... more »

Shinagawa Station, Konan end of the concourse. Two hours before sunset [at this time of year it's around 4.30-4.45pm] the sun comes through into the atrium in a most magical way....

First test shot with the Mamiya RB 127mm on Nikon D800E

This was just a quick shot as I left the camera shop in my neighbourhood.

Am going out to teach a lesson for one of my students later, so I will shoot a few more tests with the setup then.

Very pleased with this lens so far. This is shot with the aperture wide open, focusing on the washing hanging on the balcony.

I like the colour too.

First test shot with the Mamiya RB 127mm on Nikon D800E

This was just a quick shot as I left the camera shop in my neighbourhood.

Am going out to teach a lesson for one of my students later, so I will shoot a few more tests with the setup then.

Mamiya RB Lenses on Nikon

Picked up a lovely and cheap lens yesterday which I am testing out on the Nikon.

I used to shoot both the Mamiya RB and RZ 67 cameras back in my art-college and film-shooting days.

The lenses for the RB can be found really cheaply these days but using them on the Nikon requires a special adaptor that has a focus helicoid and a way of priming the in-lens shutter and keeping the aperture open.

Took a few test shots with this setup yesterday and looking forward to shooting some portraits with this lens.

So sharp even wide open at f/3.8. And at that aperture the bokeh is beautiful too.

Polaroid shot with the Tachihara 4x5

After trawling the junk boxes at camera shops, finally got me a Polaroid 550 back that works !!!!  Had several where despite all cleaning, fixing and attempts at repair, the rollers that pinch the chems when you pull the print out were just too slack and wouldn't spread the chems evenly.

Gonna shoot some portraits with it this afternoon and the Tachihara 4x5.

Charlie helped me test it out this morning.

This is expired film... hence the colour.

Fuji FP100-C film
Tachihara 'Hope' 4x5 large-format camera
Nikon W210mm f/5.6 lens
1/8th sec
f/5.6
100ISO

Usual dev time of Polaroid at 25 degrees would be 90secs. I gave this 120secs as I wasnt sure how old the film was.

Long time, no post: out in Tokyo with my muse

Been having one of those patches recently, where life just sort of gets in the way of being online. No bad thing in many respects but, apologies to you folks here who like seeing what I am up to.

I've had a fair amount of work recently, have been spending some time with my family and have also been feeling a bit below par. That's all conspired to create a situation where, when I have had free time, I just wanted to spend it doing absolutely nothing.... which is very unlike me.

But, feeling much more energised these past few days and a after finishing up at the hospital today [blood test], I hooked up with +Shinyong Lee for a spot of lunch, a chat about some ideas we are working on and a bit of future planning.

She had a nice outfit on, was charged up about life and wanted a couple of pics taken. In a rare moment of camera-nakedness, I used her little Sony DSLR as I had left my Nikon at home.

We took these in Shidome. Another in our little 'cup noodle shooting' series, where the shots get done in under five minutes.

Shot these, went off to have a coffee nearby and edited them in the coffee bar.

New business card makes me proud of my eldest son

I shot a pic of my eldest son, Joe, the other week... just an iPhone shot but a great moment: makes me feel, with him today starting a new school, like in this shot he's looking out onto his future.

So, I put it on the reverse side of my new business card. Makes me feel super proud every time I hand one out.

Of course, I feel proud of all three of my kids.... but the first one is always kind of special in another way.

Looking towards Shinjuku: Shibuya Hikarie Building, Tokyo

I love the Hikarie Building and one of the main reasons is that the light around sunset is always so wonderful.

Plus you have a couple or three amazing windows on the 11th Floor 'Sky Lobby' which are great to shoot people against.

Took this yesterday. Earlier it had rained heavily. The skies cleared and the light was wonderful.

In-camera black and white
Little bit of tonal contrast work in Nik Color Efex Pro 4

Sakura Season, 2014: Shinagawa Inter-City

What with living here for seven years and coming and going for more than double that, I've seen the sakura in Japan maybe 10 or 12 times now.

This year I have a personal project for shooting the blossoms. This shot isn't a part of that but I couldn't not take this scene and with anyone's photography, alongside the 'project' there should always be room for single shots. Often the trend recently has been for projects, projects, projects... it's tiresome.

I shot this whilst doing a lesson with someone. A lot of the time I don't even take my camera with me when I teach. I prefer the 'golf pro' approach to teaching photography: the golf pro doesn't bring his clubs to the lesson. He teaches you with yours. If the student is struggling, the best thing is to shoot something with their own camera that makes them go wow. That way they understand that with more practice, they can do it.

But, I was off somewhere else after the lesson and had my camera on me.

..and I like this part of Shinagawa, especially when there is a little nature to contrast with the man-made textures.

My son taking in the view at Shibuya Hikarie Building

This building hasn't been open for so long and it never fails to deliver. I usually always head here if I'm in the area around sunset.

With today's weather - rain and high winds earlier - there were great skies once the worst had passed.

Joe had never been inside before.

Shot this on the iPhone 5C.

Cup Ramen Shooting, Volume 2: Shinyong Under the Railway Tracks

What is cup ramen shooting Well, it was a phrase that +Shinyong Lee first mentioned after we'd done a shoot recently which had been so quick. Cup-ramen, or instant noodles in Japan, takes between 3 and 5 minutes to make once you have added boiling water. The last two shoots Shinyong and I have done have been so quick.. so the instant noodle analogy has sort of stuck.

Today's shoot was done to send to Japanese fashion designer, Junko Koshino. Koshino-sensei is soon making a dress especially for Shinyong. The jacket in this shot is a Koshino design. We just wanted to make a shot for Koshino-sensei, with a piece of her clothing and to introduce my photography to her.

The accent of the shot was to be red: red lips, red nails. The red flash was my idea.

Nikon SB800 flash fitted with a red lens filter [I couldn't find my red gels today, so I just taped a deep-red camera filter over the flash]. The SB800 fired with CN603 trigger and placed about 10m behind the model to give a red accent to the arch. Fired at 1/8th power and 50mm zoom.
Yongnuo560 flash fired to light Shinyong, at 70% power and 50mm zoom.

Japan three years after 3/11: photography raising funds for Tohoku

Everyone who lives in Japan, has friends here or who was visiting on 11th March, 2011, spends this day remembering. There are still a lot of people suffering, still a lot that has not changed, still many questions that have gone unanswered, still a disaster going on for many people. The MyJapan initiative, at the time and since, sought to create a space where people with images of Japan could share them with a view to raising funds for Tohoku. Two books were made. Exhibitions were held. A lot of money has been raised. It's been a joy to be involved.

Here's one of mine from the collection. I had the privilege of seeing this printed out very large, as the centerpiece of the first MyJapan show. It's raised a fair bit of cash on its own, this shot. That makes me very happy. As a photographer not shooting... more »

Here's one of mine from the collection. I had the privilege of seeing this printed out very large, as the centerpiece of the first MyJapan show. It's raised a fair bit of cash on its own, this shot. That makes me very happy. As a photographer not shooting 'hard news' sometimes it's hard to see how my 'art' fits in to the wider scheme of 'making the world a better place'. MyJapan made me feel that I was doing something tangible.

As we remember, today, the people who were lost and the people who survived but who have lost so much, share this - if you want to - and maybe a little more cash can be raised to help those who are still very much in need.

Thanks.

Final shot of the day with Cynthia

It was blowing a gale and not exactly what you'd call 'warm'. But, with our model in the mood and Shinyong holding the softbox down we set about getting the finale shot on last week's shoot.

Wanted this shot for a while. Shinyong has a great rooftop to her flat. One shouldn't really be up there but as long as we're safe, the building management people don't seem to mind.

Gear?

Nikon D800E
Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S
Alien Bee Ringflash inside a 1mx60cm softbox at camera left
Part of the main shot used for the left facing page in this layout.

Gratuitous bag shot:Osaka

Heading off to the client in a minute for a day of shooting architecture, interiors, panoramas and coming up with something funky of their new building in Osaka.

Heavy bag. But a happy bag..... :-)

Cynthia by the station: Tokyo

This is one of those spots in Tokyo that I go past often and think about what I could do with it.

I've taken a few shots here, of strangers. This is the first time I got a model in the same spot. +Cynthia Popper worked the place perfectly.

I love the way the light comes down from between the railway tracks. And I love the shape of the opening to the sky.

All the lines here really work.

Cynthia and I had come from Shimbashi on the train and were walking back to Shinyong's place, to do a change of clothes and the last shot of the day.

Glad we cracked off a few shots here. Very much worth it.

Cynthia Popper: one from last week's shoot

Just a quick edit of one of the shots that +Cynthia Popper and I shot last week.

This one was shot on the train between Shimbashi and Hammamatsucho. We'd done a few shots at the station, including one cut that I have had in my head for years: shooting a model on the platform with the city behind her.

Nice shoot. Lovely lady. Will be posting more of the shots soon... but this is turning into a busy week; shooting in Tokyo today and have two days of shooting in Osaka from tomorrow.

Gear etc?

The last one of these CD layouts, for now

I have had a lot of fun doing this project and I hope the people who came along like what we were able to make from their lovely shots.

This one is from +Matthias I. Lambrecht. Great work, sir. Love the yellow. Love the tree shots. You definitely got your head around what was necessary for this workshop. Some of the building shots you turned in were wonderful too. But the strong, repeating patterns weren't working so well for text overlay, so they didnt make the cut. But.. great stuff. Thanks a lot.
