TechDissected545This is the +TechDissected  #Photography  circle. This is the place where we have some of the most awesome photographers on G+. However, we're looking for more to add to it. Do you fit in this circle or do you know someone that does that's not a part of it? If so, comment with the person's name and tag them so we can add them to our special #Photography  circle!2014-04-11 23:42:09186304CC G+

Gailen Mapes61,122Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera  F-H - 25 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to March 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting February 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-03-25 13:33:52185628CC G+

Gene Bowker66,106  #Alphabetcircles  - Gene's Active Photographers on G+ *Part One: First Name A-CMeet almost 400 ACTIVE G+ photographers with First Names between A and C.It's that time again, I've been doing Spring Cleaning even though it isn't Spring officially yet here and going through my photography circles again to check out what folks have been sharing and see who is still active on G+.I've visited each of the folks included in this circles within the last week and they have been active in the last month (or so) and regularly post their OWN photography. They come from all over the world and their styles vary as much as their choice of equipment and subject matter. There are a lot of folks in here that I've been friends with for years, but there are also a lot of newer folks who you've probably not met yet and who I am looking forward to getting to know better myself.Criteria1. Actively posting photos on G+2. We circle each other3. Primarily post their OWN photography (that's a judgement call on my part)4. "Safe for work" (another judgement call)Why you should follow them?1. Add active photographers to your stream without a lot of inactive accounts.2. Find some new folks to interact with who are ACTIVE on G+As always.. if you do add them.. the best way to do that is to create a new circle and that way you can watch it and decide if they fit with you or notNot in here?1. Maybe we haven't met yet?  If so, I'd love to hear from you and I'll be sure to check out your stream. Be sure to circle me if you haven't as I check those who add me regularly.2. Maybe you don't post public? If not, there is a good chance that you looked inactive to me.3. Maybe you don't post "primarily" photography... once again that is subjective.Feel free to reshare with your friends if you want, but there are NO requirements to be in this circle except for the criteria above.I'm slowly going through the rest of the Alphabet and as I complete each section I'll be sharing them in this series.  If you follow along you can easily add 1000+ photographers to your stream too.p.s. don't forget tomorrow is  #transporttuesday   Gene Bowker+Rusted Rail Images 2014-03-11 00:18:29394752593CC G+

Justin Hill22,577338 Photographers :- Due to a post I saw float past in my stream today I am suddenly aware of the fact that I have not shared any of my circles for a very long time. So to rectify that here's my circle of photographers. Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204CC G+

Giuseppe Ridinò8,42371 TOP photographers#dslr #photography #photographers#PhotographersToFollow #SharedCircle #CircleShareIn the last months I've been included in many public circles.I'm happy, of course, I thanked all those people who including me in their shared circles, and still thank them now again.People here in G+ helped me in this way, I got more followers and also I started following more people.I believe that sharing a public circle makes G+ more active and helps others to grow and get connected, especially those who are new here. Now I think it's time to give something back to the people of G+, this is why I decided to share this circle. Here you can find some TOP photographers to follow:- some are PRO, others not, but they are all GREAT;- they shot all kind of photography: street, nature, macro, etc.;- many of them are loooog time members of G+, some since it was a beta and access was due to invitation only;- many have blog(s) or collaborate with sites, write articles in magazines, provide live lessons, etc.;- the most are very active in G+, some a bit less;- many of them host one or more projects in G+ that can help others enjoying the photography world;Said that, if your want to enjoy the photography world here in G+, and if you don't know where to start from, then I suggest you to add this circle!2013-07-09 09:12:2171304CC G+

Charles Lupica66,461             Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: A to JThis  is the first of two circles,  I'll share the second circle this weekend so that they're not so on top of each other.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Kat Scan and +Margaret Tompkins.  They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount.  Thank you all for all of your help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script is provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities or people that interact a lot with other people but don't post their own work will get filtered out along with the people that aren't really active.  ValidationThese two circles were very heavily vetted.  Of the original 2000 names, nearly 35% do not appear in either circle.  This is a result of the filtering I mentioned above and vetting of ever single profile in the list until we had enough names to make a list of 1000 names.  The list was divided into 6 parts with Bill Wood, Gemma Costa, Jen Baptist, Kat Scan, Margaret Tompkins and me each taking a group of names.  I tried to assign the list so that the pe2013-05-16 16:41:2850113082147CC G+

New business card makes me proud of my eldest son

I shot a pic of my eldest son, Joe, the other week... just an iPhone shot but a great moment: makes me feel, with him today starting a new school, like in this shot he's looking out onto his future.

So, I put it on the reverse side of my new business card. Makes me feel super proud every time I hand one out.

Of course, I feel proud of all three of my kids.... but the first one is always kind of special in another way.

Looking towards Shinjuku: Shibuya Hikarie Building, Tokyo

I love the Hikarie Building and one of the main reasons is that the light around sunset is always so wonderful.

Plus you have a couple or three amazing windows on the 11th Floor 'Sky Lobby' which are great to shoot people against.

Took this yesterday. Earlier it had rained heavily. The skies cleared and the light was wonderful.

Sakura Season, 2014: Shinagawa Inter-City

What with living here for seven years and coming and going for more than double that, I've seen the sakura in Japan maybe 10 or 12 times now.

This year I have a personal project for shooting the blossoms. This shot isn't a part of that but I couldn't not take this scene and with anyone's photography, alongside the 'project' there should always be room for single shots. Often the trend recently has been for projects, projects, projects... it's tiresome.

I shot this whilst doing a lesson with someone. A lot of the time I don't even take my camera with me when I teach. I prefer the 'golf pro' approach to teaching photography: the golf pro doesn't bring his clubs to the lesson. He teaches you with yours. If the student is struggling, the best thing is to shoot something witht... more »

My son taking in the view at Shibuya Hikarie Building

This building hasn't been open for so long and it never fails to deliver. I usually always head here if I'm in the area around sunset.

With today's weather - rain and high winds earlier - there were great skies once the worst had passed.

Joe had never been inside before.

Shot this on the iPhone 5C.

Cup Ramen Shooting, Volume 2: Shinyong Under the Railway Tracks

What is cup ramen shooting Well, it was a phrase that +Shinyong Lee first mentioned after we'd done a shoot recently which had been so quick. Cup-ramen, or instant noodles in Japan, takes between 3 and 5 minutes to make once you have added boiling water. The last two shoots Shinyong and I have done have been so quick.. so the instant noodle analogy has sort of stuck.

Today's shoot was done to send to Japanese fashion designer, Junko Koshino. Koshino-sensei is soon making a dress especially for Shinyong. The jacket in this shot is a Koshino design. We just wanted to make a shot for Koshino-sensei, with a piece of her clothing and to introduce my photography to her.

The accent of the shot was to be red: red lips, red nails. The red flash was my idea.

Japan three years after 3/11: photography raising funds for Tohoku

Everyone who lives in Japan, has friends here or who was visiting on 11th March, 2011, spends this day remembering. There are still a lot of people suffering, still a lot that has not changed, still many questions that have gone unanswered, still a disaster going on for many people. The MyJapan initiative, at the time and since, sought to create a space where people with images of Japan could share them with a view to raising funds for Tohoku. Two books were made. Exhibitions were held. A lot of money has been raised. It's been a joy to be involved.

Here's one of mine from the collection. I had the privilege of seeing this printed out very large, as the centerpiece of the first MyJapan show. It's raised a fair bit of cash on its own, this shot. That makes me very happy. As a photographer not shooting... more »

Final shot of the day with Cynthia

It was blowing a gale and not exactly what you'd call 'warm'. But, with our model in the mood and Shinyong holding the softbox down we set about getting the finale shot on last week's shoot.

Wanted this shot for a while. Shinyong has a great rooftop to her flat. One shouldn't really be up there but as long as we're safe, the building management people don't seem to mind.

Cynthia by the station: Tokyo

This is one of those spots in Tokyo that I go past often and think about what I could do with it.

I've taken a few shots here, of strangers. This is the first time I got a model in the same spot. +Cynthia Popper worked the place perfectly.

I love the way the light comes down from between the railway tracks. And I love the shape of the opening to the sky.

All the lines here really work.

Cynthia and I had come from Shimbashi on the train and were walking back to Shinyong's place, to do a change of clothes and the last shot of the day.

Glad we cracked off a few shots here. Very much worth it.

Cynthia Popper: one from last week's shoot

Just a quick edit of one of the shots that +Cynthia Popper and I shot last week.

This one was shot on the train between Shimbashi and Hammamatsucho. We'd done a few shots at the station, including one cut that I have had in my head for years: shooting a model on the platform with the city behind her.

Nice shoot. Lovely lady. Will be posting more of the shots soon... but this is turning into a busy week; shooting in Tokyo today and have two days of shooting in Osaka from tomorrow.

The last one of these CD layouts, for now

I have had a lot of fun doing this project and I hope the people who came along like what we were able to make from their lovely shots.

This one is from +Matthias I. Lambrecht. Great work, sir. Love the yellow. Love the tree shots. You definitely got your head around what was necessary for this workshop. Some of the building shots you turned in were wonderful too. But the strong, repeating patterns weren't working so well for text overlay, so they didnt make the cut. But.. great stuff. Thanks a lot.

Latest two layouts from the 'shooting artwork for a classical music CD' workshop

Going to put these all in an article when I am done with them. But here are the latest two: blue flavoured one from Paul Tsai; red/snowy/leaf one from Dennis Hrebtov.

I decided to try something different with Dennis' layout. The pic has a lot more tone in it than the version he sent. I managed to pull a lot of detail out of the snow.

Thought it might be fun to just use one photo across the whole package.

One more CD layout from the workshop

Got on a bit of a roll with these today and this is made from shots taken by Paul Thompson.

His panned shot of the police car just had to be the cover. Such a great moment he captured.

Lovely work, Paul.

Another great result from our recent CD packing photography workshop

Hat's off to +Celia Rae for her great shots.

Real pleasure laying this one out. Probably going to re-format +Jason Arney's recent layout. As I have moved the logo from the front to the back. Jason served-up some great shots but I felt I didn't quite get the layout right.

Anyway. This post belongs to Celia. Awesome work.

And I think I really got back to my roots.. this one has a real flavour of covers I actually worked on whilst General Manager of Black Box Music in London.

Photography workshops in Tokyo: From Atriums to Alleyways: The Architecture of Yurakucho and Ginza

An architectural photography walk with the aim of producing images for an A4, 6-sided, fold-out pamphlet to act as introduction and schedule for a fictional festival of architecture, to be held in the International Forum.

Participants will be provided with a PDF example pamphlet beforehand. On this walk we’ll be learning some skills in shooting Tokyo’s architecture and what is necessary to produce various stills for the pamphlet (landscape and portrait aspect ratios, details and establishing shots, encapsulating the variety of the area’s buildings in a limited number of photographs).

Special note: We will have, on loan from Hasselblad, one of their H5D digital medium-format cameras, fitted with their brand-new 50MP CMOS Hasselblad back. We'll have 28mm and100mm ... more »

First Finished CD Digipak Layout From Recent Workshop

The brief was to produce images for a music CD package design, for the music of composer Toru Takemitsu.

This finished layout is made up from pics by +Jason Arney.

I did the layout, typography etc.

Thanks, Jason. Great shots. Like this a lot. Still beating myself up a bit about some of the text elements. But I am a perfectionist. It's a curse.

Photography Workshops in Tokyo: What's Your Angle?

This workshop is scheduled for Saturday 22nd February.

What's Your Angle?

Viewpoint is everything. Sure, there are a thousand things that could make a picture great but it’s very often when the photographer adopts a unique viewpoint on their subject that begins to set their photos firmly apart from others.

On this walk we’ll be looking at how you train your eye to seek out that ‘killer angle’. As well as what we can do with just our eyes and brains (looking down, looking straight up, getting low, putting ourselves in the action, stepping back) we’ll be examining what we all have in our camera bags to help us in our quest for a different point of view; a wide lens, a telephoto, a different viewfinder.

Fee for the workshop: 5000Y

Density: Osaka

Got this out of the window on the 27th floor of the Imperial Hotel in Osaka last year, whilst I was on my lunch break at a shoot I was doing for a regular client.

Been up to various high floors of The Imperial before but this day the weather and light were perfect.

Focal length of 80mm lens helps compress the perspective nicely, to enhance that feeling of density. But it's dense already; doesn't need much help from me :-)

You can see the Osaka Loop Line, the orange train, going through the middle of the left-hand side of the shot. I was waiting for that. I'd seen it once and waited for it to come back and in the part of the city where you could see more of the train than anywhere else in the frame.

Location portrait photography in Tokyo, Japan: a shoot with Ayuko Izumi

Full write-up on this recent shoot is here:
http://japanorama.co.uk/2014/02/17/using-tokyo-as-my-studio-ayuko-izumi/

The shot below is one of my faves from the shrine portion of the shoot, although we covered kimono, casual and her all in black with one of her swords.

Great day out. Very happy client who i fully involved in the whole process.. enough for her to say she'd never been so educated by any photographer before.

For me that underlines a lot of stuff: as photographers we can't expect our clients to understand the value in our profession, in our 'eye', in our vision and skills unless we educate them.

Panorama from Cape Manzamo, Okinawa, Japan

On Friday evening I was shooting a job in Okinawa for a client. I sorted myself out to have Saturday on the island as well, which turned out to be a good move seeing as Tokyo had another day of intense snow that grounded most of the flights back into Haneda Airport.

As it turned out, although I missed the opportunity to shoot some more wonderful snow shots in Tokyo, I spent Saturday cruising a few of the nice spots on the west coast of Okinawa.

Temperatures reached 20 degrees later in the day, in stark contrast to the weather back home in Tokyo. The morning was super windy and it made for some dramatic clouds and wonderful atmosphere along the coast.

One of the first spots I stopped in on Saturday morning was Cape Manzamo. The southern end of the coast there is the most photographed, but just north oft... more »

Tokyo's biggest snowfall since 1969: battling home with mum

I got to Roppongi about 4.30pm, holed-up somewhere for a coffee for about 45mins and then headed out again.

I'd basically stopped using anything other than my old 20mm manaul-focus Nikon lens. I've had it since I was about 20 years-old. It's an old friend. Very small. Great for zone focussing [setting a range of distances on the lens according to which aperture one is shooting at], it's old and it's manual... so there is nothing to go wrong even if it gets totally soaking wet... which it did.

This spot outside the station was perfect for shooting the people battling the strong winds and snow, as there was a lot of light coming out of a nearby shop and there was a good flow of people.

Backlight or just good light really helps illuminate the snow at night, making... more »

Tokyo's biggest snow since 1969: by the Tokyo Tower

Saturday saw the biggest drop of snow in the capital since 1969 which, coincidentally, was the year of my birth.

I went out for a walk about 2pm, starting at Hammamatsucho and walking up through Zojoji Temple, past the Tokyo Tower and ending up in Roppongi.

Many other places I could have gone but I was meeting a friend for dinner in Azabu and didn't want to be too far away from that objective in case the snow really came down.. which it did.

Getting home after dinner was a bit of an adventure.

Portrait of Nuno Moreira for Stekki mmagazine

I met Nuno a week or so ago at the library of the Museum of Photography in Ebisu, Tokyo. We hung for a beer or two after that. I picked up a copy of his latest photo-book 'State of Mind' and yesterday I interviewed him about the book and his next projects.

Lovely guy. His work spans graphic design, illustration and photography.

I shot this photo of Nuno in Shibuya last night.

I'll post a link through to the interview in Stekki when it's online, which will be by the end of next week. Final images are going into the mag now and then it's off to be proof-read. This latest edition, the third, will be between 146 and 150pp.

The day draws to a close: Gifu, Takayama, Japan

Shot back in December on our way over the mountains on Route 471, from Matsumoto towards Toyama.

This was a little off Route 471 but not far. I'd seen an interesting plateau on the map and as everyone else in the car was asleep, I figured they wouldn't mind the detour.

The daylight was fading. It was getting progressively colder. I was pleased that we were close enough to main roads that had been cleared of the worst of the snow. I don't mind driving in the snow but in the snow and at night is something just for when I am in the vehicle... not when the whole family's with me.

About the photo?

Playing in the snow: Sawando National Park, Japan

Took these two shots a few weeks ago when we were travelling over to Kanazawa from Matsumoto. We'd stopped by the entrance to Sawando National Park, up on the mountains that bridge the gap between Matsumoto and Toyama.

Superb area of untouched snow which myself and the kids played in - along with some resident local monkeys - for an hour or so.

Glad we'd rented a 4WD and the snow-tyres as this spot would have been impossible to get to with a normal car.

Me and my city: having some quiet time above Shibuya

Above Shibuya and behind a layer of thick glass is, perhaps, one of the few places you can enjoy some quiet time there.

A recent addition to the skyline of this area of Tokyo is the Hikarie Building. I first went there last year to shoot a little of the TEDx Tokyo event. Since then I have just enjoyed dropping in any time I am passing, to spend a little time on the 11th Floor, at the Sky Lobby: watch the people there, take some shots inside and take in the views of the outside.

It's a good viewing spot. Partly for viewing the established sights of Shibuya but also partly for seeing what is going on with the re-development of the area around the old Toyoku Line station.

At least three more skyscrapers will be arriving in Shibuya between now and 2017. Interesting times.

For now,it... more »

Sunset on distant peaks: Route 471, Togamuratakanuma, Japan

Shot this a week ago on our way back to Tokyo from the Kanazawa/Toyama area. We were on Route 471 over the top of the hills; Toyama Nanto. This is the view towards the hills that lie at the northern side of Matsumoto.

Beautiful day. The sun was dropping and we came from the cool light of a shady valley to a point by a bridge, from where we could see the last of sun casting a wonderful warm light on the distant mountains.

Hong Kong Express magazine: feature using my taxi photos

Always nice to see work in print and even more exciting when it's a large feature for a magazine that is just starting out.

Hong Kong Express is a new magazine from the Ink stable, who I have done some work for before - for publications including the Hemispheres magazine for United Airlines.

They liked the set of taxi pictures I shot a few years ago (and which is pretty much an ongoing project for me in Tokyo). Their feature is in the current, inaugural issue of the magazine.

Check it out here, with their flipping-page magazine [link opens at pp32-33, which is where my feature starts. But the whole magazine is available online for those interested].

Water taxi at sunset, Dubai, UAE

Miyuki, the model who is along on the shoot I am doing, had just finished shooting our first set with me across the river. We jumped on a water taxi to get to our third location.

I'd been out location-hunting yesterday and had picked a start time for today of 3.30pm. It turned out to be the perfect time to start... as we made the river by sunset, shooting down by the old cargo boats in the most beautiful light of the day.

The trip across the river was great. Bathed in a warm orange glow and brushed by a refreshing wind, we just paused in our shooting schedule to take in the wonderful scene.

This was the taxi that was making its crossing just next to ours.

Lovely moment of the day.

One from a recent trip to NYC

I was recently in New York, shooting for the same client for whom I am travelling and shooting now.

This was one of those moments, which occurred a few times in the Big Apple, where I was in a cab and watching the city go past the window.

We'd stopped at a traffic light and I'd put the 20mm lens on the camera, to get a few shots from the window when I had chance.

This building really struck me as different - something I'd expect more readily, say, in Germany - and it looked great against the sky.

Family outing: Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Sorry for the awful gap in uploading anything here but since August I have been totally flat-out with work and any spare time has been spent with my family.

Currently in Java, on a shoot for a commercial client in Japan. This shot was taken in a little break from work, on a road nearby the location we were shooting in.

Long, straight road with loads of interesting people travelling on their scooters and bikes, which made a perfect place to break out the 300mm lens.

So happy these folks came by, as they made the perfect shot and after seeing so many people these past few days with kids on their scooters, this one was a really special catch... the whole family out and going somewhere.

Very helpful staff here. My test shots and explanations now have them thinking about and seeing the photo opportunities in their workplace, which is great. True collaboration. Very satisfying.

Just about to have lunch then we get started.
