Art through the Apeture Photography (Paula)11,491There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00300
Bette Kauffman26,043And it won't be so cold in December, right? Well, regardless, +Bette Kauffman is coming to town--God willing and some nut doesn't set fire to the infrastructure again! So it's photowalk time. Calling all Chicago and vicinity photogs. Hope you can join me. We'll gather at the Bean for the obligatory group shot there, and I want to check out what has transpired with the construction that was underway in Millenium Park last time I was there. After that, I'm easy. We can go anywhere y'all are inspired to go, including back up to this beach where Tom and I were freezing our tushes back in March 2013.It really was cold that day....2014-12-20 17:00:002
Bette Kauffman26,043@115907986192399529711 is coming to Chicago! Will arrive some time Friday Sept. 26 and be ready for a photowalk Saturday. I have us meeting at The Bean, but if anyone has a better idea, I'm game. I'll be staying in Club Quarters Hotel in The Loop, but I'm comfortable using CTA to get about anywhere I want to go. If you can't join in until lunch time or after, we can make that work too. I'll have to head back to my hotel room by 4 p.m. to get ready for the opera. Y'all get this on your calendar, now!Chicago in September!2014-09-27 17:00:003

Bette Kauffman26,043Yes, Bette Kauffman is coming to Chicago! Opera Friday and Saturday evening, photowalk Saturday, home Sunday. Meet me at The Bean (Cloud Gate to the purists). If the weather cooperates, I plan to be out until about 4:30 p.m. If the weather is nasty (seems a real possibility this year), we'll head up to the conservatory and feast our lenses on orchids and such. Yellow Fringeless Orchid (Plantanthera integra)

So... #wildflowerwednesday friends! I am just back from two days of wild orchid hunting in west central Louisiana! And as you can see, a most successful hunt.

Tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday and I'm looking forward to seeing what y'all have been finding. Or hoarding? Anyway, please do share something--wildflowers in their natural habitat, tell the story of the shot and be sure to tag me, +Bette Kauffman.

These lovely orchids are along Bailey Road in the Vernon Parish Ranger District of the #KisatchieNationalForest . We walked in a short distance, perhaps 60 yards, and at first saw just a handful. But the more we looked around and moved a few feet right or left, the more we found. In the end, we did not count but estimated the area to hold 25-30 plants. They were among grasses and pitcher plants past the... more »

I'm curious about this monkeyflower vine shared by +Bob Danley. Could those peach-colored forms be the fruit? We'll see!

#wildflowerwednesday  - Yellow Monkeyflower
Significance: Grows vine-like or bushy
Discoverer: Meriwether Lewis circa 1805
Curator: +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: Both Lewis’ Monkeyflower (previous post https://goo.gl/BvXmxz) and Yellow Monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus) were discovered by Meriwether Lewis during the Corps of Discovery. However, they do not share growth habits. Yellow Monkeyflower is a bit stranger than its pink-flowered cousin, this species is bushy in very wet (semi-permanent) habitats while small and vine-like in seasonally wet habitats! ___I'm curious about this monkeyflower vine shared by +Bob Danley. And this is a new species of Blazing Star for me as well! The black swallowtail was as enamored as I was. He was completely engrossed, moving in a spiral pattern up and down the flower stalk feeding. I got quite close and have many wonderful shots, including fully spread wings from behind. But I really like this one for the detailed view of his body. You will see more!___

A truly unforgettable shade of blue! Thanks, +Bob Danley, for getting your feet wet to capture these water-loving flowers.

#wildflowerwednesday  - Small Forget-me-not
Tricky ID: Very similar to Hackelia and Lappula plants
Habitat: Mud/Standing water, circumboreal
Curator:  +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes:  Myosotis laxa true to its common name is a small plant about 8" tall. It was growing in standing water; used this feature to assist in ID. Really pretty flowers. Thoreau described: "It is one of the most interesting minute flowers. It is the more beautiful for being small and unpretending; even flowers must be modest" (Wikipedia). ___A truly unforgettable shade of blue! Here's a great idea for your butterfly garden from +Ohio Prairie Nursery, and a pretty photo as well!

#WildflowerWednesday! We're approaching the time of year when we start to see late season nectar plants start to open up.

One of these is Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana). This late season perennial is very adaptable to many soil and moisture levels. It's an excellent nectar source for butterflies and hummingbirds during this time of year when mid season nectar plants are done blooming.

Fun Fact: If the flowers of Obedient Plant are manipulated, they tend to stay in that position for a while. Hence the name!___Here's a great idea for your butterfly garden from +Ohio Prairie Nursery, and a pretty photo as well!

Many thanks to +John Munt for sharing this sophisticated lady with #wildflowerwednesday. This species is completely new to me! But I just learned something. "Palustris" is also the species name of the longleaf pine: "Pinus palustris." That made me curious. Turns out "palustris" means "marshy" or "swampy." Ok, that makes sense!!! BTW, corn doesn't look like grass to me, either, but it is!

Parnassia palustris
The common name Grass of Parnassus is a bit misleading. It doesn't look like any grass you've ever seen. Bog Star is more fitting looking at the flower.

They prefer an alkaline habitat, in this case a seep where the underlining bedrock is limestone. While the genus is widespread I believe this species is limited to the northern States.

They were among grasses and pitcher plants past the flowering stage.___

In contrast to +Terrie Gray's "elephant head" flowers this week, #wildflowerwednesday cannot see the monkey in these "monkeyflowers"! Pretty nonetheless and +Bob Danley explains the "Lewis's" part. Great share, Bob. Thanks!

Do these not look like trumpets fairies would play? I can see it! A wonderful new species for #wildflowerwednesday from +Steele Wotkyns, and be sure to read his vivid description of where he found them! Great contribution, Steele!

At the end of my day for #wildflowerwednesday and at last I've a chance to share my recent and most memorable first encounter with White Fairy Trumpet (Ipomopsis aggregata candida) from a very recent adventure in southern Colorado! Also known as White Skyrocket or White Gilia, according to the sources I checked, it thrives on south-facing slopes and was photographed on location (both by me and by one source) in the Wet Mountains. In your mind, picture an immense alpine mountain meadow reaching to 10,000 feet and covered by these eye-catching-stop-your-truck-in-a-full-skid-to-take-a-picture beauties! Texas Vervain (Verbena helai)

Had to go back to May of this year for this little pretty to remind you that tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday. In fact, I have a very busy day tomorrow, including an early evening event two hours from home, so I won't get to your posts until late evening. Nevertheless, share your shots of wildflowers in their natural habitats and I'll get to them eventually. Tage #wildflowerwednesday and me, +Bette Kauffman, and be sure to tell the story of the shot.

The story of this shot is pretty simple. It was my birthday trip back in May to a B&B near a section of #KisatchieNationalForest in west central Louisiana--one of my fave hangouts--where I spent two days hiking and shooting and learning about native plants from my friend the botanist and with other plant nerds. We have several species of vervain in Louisiana. They like sun. This one was... more »

Folks, be sure to view this one in light box. +Fine Art Photography by Ken Barber's contribution to tomorrow's #wildflowerwednesday is a stunner! And be sure to read about the deadly beauty!

Black Henbane
Hyoscyamus niger

For #wildflowerwednesday  curated by +Bette Kauffman

I had never seen one of these before.  I had gone up this particular back road because someone told me there was gold up there.  What I found was a profusion of wildflowers.

And then, this one came into view.  I immediately got the distinct impression that it's a noxious weed.  I also instinctively treated it as if it were dangerous.  Don't know how I could have known.

Turns out that yep, it's poisonous and it's on Colorado's Noxious Weed B-list.  But what a beautiful weed!

P.S.  If you want to go look for the gold, this photo is geotagged!___Folks, be sure to view this one in light box. +Fine Art Photography by Ken Barber's contribution to tomorrow's #wildflowerwednesday is a stunner! And be sure to read about the deadly beauty!

I have seen many posts and comments indicating that many people labor under the misinformation that all "churches" approach the Christian Bible the same way. That is not true, and here an easy read that might help those interested to see the difference. Everyone else, carry on!

For Levi: Flying Low

Ok, so... I am still in disbelief that I got this shot. It is hard to get this close to these birds, and ridiculously hard to get DOF and focus just right when they are in motion. I declare this one to be perfect! And all I did was straighten it a tiny bit and adjust the contrast slightly. BTW, it's a Great Egret (Ardea alba).

And I'm sharing it today for +Levi Moore, who has made great strides in regaining mobility and to egg him on so he can come to Louisiana and go "big white bird" shooting with me some day!

Savannah Meadowbeauty (Rhexia alifanus)

I thought it was hot the day I shot this in a road ditch near Drake's Creek in the #KisatchieNationalForest . Today I sit in my central air-conditioned house and can hardly breath. Do not come to Louisiana right now. God is using us for hell!

In fact, I must brave the heat and go water my baby tree and deck pots or things will soon die! Hope y'all having more reasonable weather than we. And are doing everything you can to reduce your carbon footprint!

Natural History Notes: An endemic to Idaho/Montana, one of 30 Penstemon sp in Big Sky Country. This particular plant has large blue flowers and reaches a height of 24 inches. Blankets of Indian Blanket

Both sides of the #CreoleNatureTrail where it passes through #SabineNWR were blanketed with Gallardia for miles last Sunday! I don't usually post two photos at the same time, but I thought this combination made for a warm invitation to participate in #wildflowerwednesday tomorrow. Last Sunday afternoon was hot, hot, hot in southwestern Louisiana, but I made my planned visit to the #SabineNWR anyway. It is an amazing place. I will be returning to Lake Charles in October and hope to spend more time under cooler conditions.

The #CreoleNatureTrail is Highway 27; it travels south from Sulphur, La., through the Sabine wetlands and all the way to Holly Beach on the Gulf Coast, then along the Coast to Cameron, then back north again--now on the east side of Calcascieu Lake--through more wetlands and the Cameron Prairie. It is an amazing journey well worth your time. It can be done in an afternoon, but.... you will not have nearly as much time as you will want to explore along the way!___

The Wildlife Walkway in the #SabineNWR is completely accessible to folks in wheelchairs. The trails are paved and the observation tower has a standard wheelchair ramp. The sides of the trail to the edges of the cane is kept mowed, which reduces the chances of encountering venomous snakes and 'gators on the trail. From the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Sabine brochure: The tall thick stands of cane on each side of the trail are known as Phragmites or Roseau cane. This cane grows on mineral soil in higher sites of the marsh. It provides cover and nesting areas for many animals. By looking into the thick stands, you may be able to observe trails created by different animals and birds.___
