Art through the Apeture Photography11,059There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00300
Bette Kauffman26,009And it won't be so cold in December, right? Well, regardless, +Bette Kauffman is coming to town--God willing and some nut doesn't set fire to the infrastructure again! So it's photowalk time. Calling all Chicago and vicinity photogs. Hope you can join me. We'll gather at the Bean for the obligatory group shot there, and I want to check out what has transpired with the construction that was underway in Millenium Park last time I was there. After that, I'm easy. We can go anywhere y'all are inspired to go, including back up to this beach where Tom and I were freezing our tushes back in March 2013.It really was cold that day....2014-12-20 17:00:002
Bette Kauffman26,009@115907986192399529711 is coming to Chicago! Will arrive some time Friday Sept. 26 and be ready for a photowalk Saturday. I have us meeting at The Bean, but if anyone has a better idea, I'm game. I'll be staying in Club Quarters Hotel in The Loop, but I'm comfortable using CTA to get about anywhere I want to go. If you can't join in until lunch time or after, we can make that work too. I'll have to head back to my hotel room by 4 p.m. to get ready for the opera. Y'all get this on your calendar, now!Chicago in September!2014-09-27 17:00:003

Bette Kauffman26,009Yes, Bette Kauffman is coming to Chicago! Opera Friday and Saturday evening, photowalk Saturday, home Sunday. Meet me at The Bean (Cloud Gate to the purists). If the weather cooperates, I plan to be out until about 4:30 p.m. If the weather is nasty (seems a real possibility this year), we'll head up to the conservatory and feast our lenses on orchids and such. Heal All in bloom! Now +John Wade knows what's growing in his backyard. I'd have to look it up again to be sure, but most of the parts of this plant can be used to actually make owies better!

This small flowering plant that sits very close to the ground has planted itself in patches out back, it's about an inch across.

Pink Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea)

On the #FourCountyPointTrail along Highway 26 west of Portland, OR, about halfway to the Coast, I had a blast getting up close to these beauties. Could hardly wait to use them to announce #wildflowerwednesday , tomorrow!

So... what have all  you wildflower enthusiasts been shooting this past week? I spent a glorious several days on the Oregon Coast and let me tell you, June in Oregon will not disappoint you. I have many wildflowers not yet identified, and I might have to resort to begging +Fine Art Photography by Ken Barber and other westerners for help, but... these I figured out pretty quickly. And they were everywhere--but often in places where I could not (safely) stop. Nevertheless, these were right along side a cool little trail accessed from the highway with its own parking lot. Of course, I managed to fall once trying to get a shot... more »

Headed West

Not the crab spider. Me! I'm very late to the #wildflowerwednesday party this week, folks. Spent yesterday traveling, first by air from Monroe, La., to Portland, Or., then driving from Portland to Cannon Beach. And I had plenty of time to make that drive, so I stopped along Highway 26 to appreciate Oregon's many beautiful wildflowers in June. Of course!

This was on the edge of a wheat field. I have no idea what it is. The plant was not at all morning glory-like. You can see that it was a stalk with dark green leaves with serrate edges. If anyone knows, please speak up!

And by the time I got to Cannon Beach, attended the opening reception of the conference I'm here to attend, which involved three glasses of wine, plus lots of introductions and a bonfire on the beach.... well, staying awake to curate was not an option.

Imagine My Surprise

I am sitting at the top of the levee. Usually, I drive down the road in the foreground, turn right at the bottom and drive across a road that passes between two swampy areas. You can actually see where the road is because of the taller trees out in the water. The Mississippi River is a several miles in that direction, and there lots of interesting swampy backwater areas interrupted by patches of woods between the levee and the river. This "lake" is a result of a very wet spring in north and central Louisiana.

#wildflowerwednesday  - Linearleaf Phacelia
Phacelia linearis grows in a wide range of dry habitats in Montana.

Originally described by Frederick Traugott Pursh in his publication Flora americae septentrionalis (1813/1814). Pursh traveled by foot doing his botanizing, as much as 3,000 miles per year! Heal All (Prunella vulgaris)

This Heal All was blooming in the "back pasture," so to speak, a large area between the B&B and the woods with no trees that is allowed to "grow natural."

BTW, Heal All is true to its name. It has medicinal properties and has been used as food and medicine, probably for centuries.___

So, beardtongue in bloom in Ohio and Montana now, and mine here in Louisiana are not quite finished! Many thanks, +Bob Danley, for these "beautiful blues" and interesting info.

#wildflowerwednesday  - Wilcox's Beardtongue
Penstemon wilcoxii flowering in the Bitterroot National Forest at Bass Creek National Recreation Area.
Curated by +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: Largest genus of wildflowers endemic to North America (Lesica 2012). Thirty species found in Montana. Now in flower. Flowers necessary for identification. Note the name "Beardtongue" and the hairy staminoide (tongue-like structure in flower "throat"). Lewis and Clark collected this species in eastern Idaho during 1806 (Schiemann 2005). ___So, beardtongue in bloom in Ohio and Montana now, and mine here in Louisiana are not quite finished! So pretty, the big white blooms in the grass! Thanks to +Ohio Prairie Nursery for sharing with #wildflowerwednesday .

#WildflowerWednesday! Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) is in full bloom all over our prairies right now!

These tubular flowers are an important food source for hummingbirds this time of year. They usually grow no taller than 3 feet, making them perfect additions to traditional landscapes as well as prairie plantings.

Lespedeza cuneata

At #DoveField in the awesome #KisatchieNationalForest to remind you that today is #wildflowerwednesday ! And I apologize for the late reminder. My nose is kind of buried in my book project these days. It is being an awesomely busy summer.

But share your photos today of wildflowers in their native habitat, and I'll take a break from the book this evening to have a look at your lovelies.

I have never heard a common name for Lespedeza. Has anyone else? Dove Field is an open area--a meadow, really--in the Vernon Parish Ranger Unit of the Kisatchie National Forest down near Fort Polk in west-central Louisiana. I made two trips down there this summer and had a blast both times.

This particular late May trip was an annual event hosted by my botanist friend Dr. Charles Allen, who works at Fort Polk and with his wife runs a Bed &... more »

This particular late May trip was an annual event hosted by my botanist friend Dr. Charles Allen, who works at Fort Polk and with his wife runs a Bed & Breakfast--wonderful place, excellent food, great fun. I highly recommend Allen Acres if you can take the Louisiana heat!

The annual event is called Birds, Butterflies, Baygalls, Bees... and whatever other thing of nature you can think of that begins with a B, or "the BBBBBBB" for short. BTW, we've never seen a Bear, but we always have our eyes peeled!

Plant nerds and other outdoorsy types come to the BBBBBB every year. We begin with a potluck and photo-sharing session Friday evening, then do field trips all day Saturday and Sunday morning. It's a blast.___

Working on....

Among the hundreds of comments written on the WATERLINE panels while they were in stalled in various cities is the following:

"700 BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT    SOCIALISM IN AMERICA WORKS FOR THE RICH NOT FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS OR THE POOR OR NEW ORLEANS     SAVE U.S.!!!"

It was written while the exhibit was in Shreveport, in large black and green letters across the tops of 9 panels. It is by far my fave comment on the panels.

I'm in the process of recreating it in the book. Because of the way it is sprawled across so many panels, in spaces between comments written by others, I had to make 21 exposures. I used Photoshop to reduce that to 18 images, and I'm now in the process of stringing them across the tops of about 8 pages in the book.

Here are the first two images of the series. It's gonna be killer!___Working on....

"Cinnamon" Chanterelle (Cantharellus cinnabarinus)

Did you know these little neon orange numbers are sisters in the Chanterelle family and therefore edible? In fact, the fungi specialist on this hike said you can eat them raw! I probably won't try that, but... next time I see them I'm going to have a collecting bag with me. BTW, processing this photo left me with orange spots lingering in my eyes. I DID NOT mess with any sliders!

Whiskers (With Me Still)

My favorite photo from my first--and the only other one I've participated in--scavenger hunt. And I don't know which hunt it officially was. All I know is all my photos are date in January of 2012. Anyone know which hunt that was?

And this is my grandfather, courtesy of my screen saver. I did the superimposition by photographing the computer screen as it was fading from one image to the next. And that little ceramic frog sitting on the keyboard is one of the the few items I inherited from him.

And my grandfather really had those whiskers all of his adult life. It was a religious practice. He was Old Order Amish, a protestant group that formed in Switzerland in the 1500s. My father was raised in this tradition and I still have relatives who practice it, but my father left when he turned 21. Both my father and my grandfather are deceased, but I keep them with me still via my screen saver.

And, BTW, the Amish do not approve of photography. Photos are to them "graven images" and prohibited by the Bible. But I'm pretty sure my grandfather knew I was sneaking these photos of him and he just looked the other way. Love wins!___

I'm at #AllenAcres , a favorite spot in west central Louisiana, deeply engrossed in a graminoid identification class. Graminoids are grasses, sedges and rushes. It's great fun, especially since I don't have to pass the test! I'm here for the fun of it and the field trips and opportunity for photography, and I'm learning cool stuff, too. Most of my classmates work in the field of wildlife, wetlands, fisheries, etc., management. Today we go into the #KisatchieNationalForest looking for graminoids. Later!___
