paula contreras10,881There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00300
Bette Kauffman25,951And it won't be so cold in December, right? Well, regardless, +Bette Kauffman is coming to town--God willing and some nut doesn't set fire to the infrastructure again! So it's photowalk time. Calling all Chicago and vicinity photogs. Hope you can join me. We'll gather at the Bean for the obligatory group shot there, and I want to check out what has transpired with the construction that was underway in Millenium Park last time I was there. After that, I'm easy. We can go anywhere y'all are inspired to go, including back up to this beach where Tom and I were freezing our tushes back in March 2013.It really was cold that day....2014-12-20 17:00:002
Bette Kauffman25,951@115907986192399529711 is coming to Chicago! Will arrive some time Friday Sept. 26 and be ready for a photowalk Saturday. I have us meeting at The Bean, but if anyone has a better idea, I'm game. I'll be staying in Club Quarters Hotel in The Loop, but I'm comfortable using CTA to get about anywhere I want to go. If you can't join in until lunch time or after, we can make that work too. I'll have to head back to my hotel room by 4 p.m. to get ready for the opera. Y'all get this on your calendar, now!Chicago in September!2014-09-27 17:00:003

Showy Beardtongue (Penstemon cobaea)

So... I purchased this amazing plant at the Arkansas Native Plant Society meeting last fall, but I can't remember which species of beardtongue it is. Calling +Eric Hunt to remind me! It is now blooming gloriously on my deck. I must capture some seeds and make more of these! (I'm thinking P. cobaea, but really not sure.) Thanks for the positive ID, +Eric Hunt!

Candy Root (Polygala mariana)

Too pretty to pull up, but if you do, you can eat the root! This lovely little bloom heralding #wildflowerwednesday still grows on Dove Field, a new location for me in the Vernon Parish district of the #KisatchieNationalForest . Went there last Saturday with plant nerd friends as part of a weekend hiking and counting species.

Yes, tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday, so share your shots of wildflowers in their native habitat. Be sure to tag me, +Bette Kauffman, the curator and tell the story of the plant and the shot.

I had a great weekend and have a few hundred shots to sort through, but... I had fewer than I might because I suffered camera trouble. Yes, my trusty Pentax let me down. I have bragged on the reliability of Pentax cameras for a long time, and in all the many years I have used them, this is the first breakdown. Have no idea... more »

Thanks to +Naturpunkt by Gina M. for this lovely photo and the information about how Austria is saving these gorgeous wildflowers.

If i had no time yet to wish you a wonderful week, i do it now with a picture of these precious wild "Iris Sibirica" flowers, which now are in full bloom at the Nature Reserve of Bangs. These flowers are under nature protection.
Last year i had missed the flowering period and the happier i was now, to spend some very happy hours there.
More information underneath.

Iris sibirica at the Nature Reserve Bangs, Vorarlberg, Austria
End of May thousands Siberian irises (Iris sibirica) transform the wet meadows of the lower reeds in a blue sea of flowers. The Siberian iris settled wet meadows, low moors and floodplains. Drainage, intensification of use and eutrophication have led in many areas of Central Europe to the decline of this attractive kind.
Siberian irises are up to 80 cm high. The delicate, blue-violet flowers are pollinated by bumblebees. Unlike the yellow flowering marsh iris leaves Siberian iris are grassy narrow. The scientific genus name "Iris" is derived from the way the Greek Rainbow Goddess.

Congrats to +Fine Art Photography by Ken Barber for finding and photographing a plant that's apparently a thousand miles from home! Fascinating plant, too, albeit a bit creepy in name and behavior.

Broomrape, species unknown

for #wildflowerwednesday  curated by +Bette Kauffman

Saw these yesterday while eating my picnic lunch up on Sandia Mountain.  Not able to positively ID them; the species that look most like them supposedly don't occur this far west (added later:  or south), and the species that do occur here are purple, which these clearly are not.

Broomrape is a parasite with no chlorophyll.  It just attaches to the roots of something else and sucks out its nutrients.

Another shot for my "Nasty Nature" album.___Congrats to +Fine Art Photography by Ken Barber for finding and photographing a plant that's apparently a thousand miles from home! Fascinating plant, too, albeit a bit creepy in name and behavior.

Check out the "fun facts" that go with these lovely contrabution to #wildflowerwednesday by +Ohio Prairie Nursery! For all the false indigo I've soon, I don't think I've ever seen blue blossoms!

#WildflowerWednesday! Spring blooms are in full effect around here! Both Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis) and Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis) were captured this morning looking their best!

Fun Fact #1: Blue False Indigo produces a plant juice that turns purple when exposed. It's been used as a natural dye.

Fun Fact #2: Ohio Spiderwort is truly a Spring bloom. It doesn't like hot temperatures, and by August, is very difficult to discover as above ground vegetation has dried and faded.

Green Dragon (Arisaema dracontium)

This odd little flower is here to remind all that tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday! Actually, +Diana Boyd already kicked us off with some lovely Blue-Eyed Grass. I'm a little later than usual with my reminder, as I drove to Baton Rouge for some business at the capitol tomorrow.

We have lots of wisteria in Louisiana, including one just down the street! But this one contributed to #wildflowerwednesday by +Eric Hunt has me puzzled. It looks so different. Guess I need to do a little research!

So... read +John Wade's story if you need another "must visit" place for your bucket list! I know this bromeliad as "red ginger," and it is the reddest red ever.

Ilha Grande (pronounced Granje) is a small island just off the coast of Brazil and about 60 miles West of Rio. This is a wonderfully unspoilt island due, in part, to the fact that until about 20 years ago it was home to a prison for Brazil's most dangerous convicts!

It is now subject to stringent planning controls and most of the island is part of a State Park. Outside the single town of Abraio, there are no roads - just a few wider tracks and a network of trails. No motorised transport is allowed with the exception of a few emergency vehicles, a school mini-bus plus a tractor and trailer dustcart.

If you want to get around, it's either by boat or on foot. I captured this bromeliad on a rainforest trail late one morning.

Have no idea what happened but the shutter quit working. Could not change the shutter speed and could not trip the shutter. (BTW, I shoot full manual.) At first it was intermittent and when it quit, after fiddling for awhile, it would start working again. Then Sunday morning, it would not work at all so I was reduced to iPhone for the last hike. Sent the camera off to DigiTech this morning. sigh___

A Hundred Ways to Kneel & Kiss the Ground #013

Dear Googly Friends:

I am having the most fabulous birthday ever! It's my 70th, which called for some special plans, so I threw a party last Saturday night with the help of a friend who is a wonderful chef and host and loves to entertain.

Only I didn't want any more stuff, so I made it a fundraiser for a local nonprofit that employees and trains and helps mentally challenged people to have a good and productive life. My generous local friends bought raffle tickets for a few pieces of my photography and bid enthusiastically on donated silent auction items. We raised over $2,000 for the nonprofit! I'm telling you, it was the most fun I've ever had at a party!

And now today I am on my annual birthday jaunt to west central Louisiana to hang out at the B&B of my botanist friend and his wife, who is right now cooking up a fabulous Chinese dinner. Other plant nerd friends are gathering and I shot this Black-Eyed Susan this afternoon!

Love you all, bjk___

Sharing +John Wade's serendipity and hoping a #wildflowerwednesday follower can ID it. I'm wondering, since it grew near his compost heap, if it is something that might have come from a seed in the compost. Any ideas, folks?

We have a "wild patch" around our composting bins which helps keep them out of sight and it's always a pleasure to see what nature decides to grow there. This appeared a few days ago, growing very close to the ground - never seen one before......

I did not know honeysuckle came in colors! Thanks to +Eric Hunt for this beautiful drama for #wildflowerwednesday !

Lonicera sempervirens

May's weather has been varied, interesting, and fickle.

I was scheduled to lead an enthusiastic group of Arkansas Native Plant Society members on a tour of the botanical treasures found at the Arkansas Audubon Center at Gillam Park on May 9.

The night before, with the forecast calling for a heavy line of thunderstorms rolling through at daybreak, we canceled the walk. Emails were sent and websites were updated with the news.

The thunderstorms rolled through several hours early, waking me up at 3am with their sound and light show.

I got a call from one hike participant at 9am asking if we were still going. With no rain in the region I told her I would love to meet for our 10am hike. There was always the chance someone planning on going did not see our cancellation notice(s).

The two of us spent about 90 minutes wandering around enjoying the morning. About 11:30 the rain returned and we made it back to the car just in time.

This was the last outing of the spring  Arkansas Native Plant Society Meeting, only +Eric Hunt chickened out to the threat of rain! So it was me, three other ANPS members and our worthy botanist guide, Brent Baker. We barely got sprinkled on early and then had a beautiful morning.

We probably encountered the first blooming A. pavia about halfway through, and I, of course, stopped to take several photos. I then took off to catch up, only to find that the farther I went, the more blooming buckeyes I encountered. I have never seen so many in one big colony. The shafts of light coming through the canopy highlighted the blooms beautifully. You'll see more of these because I got a lot of good shots.

Share your own finds to #wildflowerwednesday tomorrow. All wildflowers in their native habitat are welcome, and I love to hear the story of the shot. Be sure to tag me, +Bette Kauffman, too.___

Kisatchie Splendors

So... I had cateract surgery this morning, left eye. Came off without a hitch, but I'm kinda laying around today. Tired, because I had to finish and upload the semester's grades before I went to bed last night! Actually, it was the wee hours of this morning...

Anyway, laying around today, I decided to make a collection. And I started with this one because I am determined to do a book about the Kisatchie when I retire in a couple more years. If you haven't notice, I em enthralled by this place and sneak a few hours there whenever I can.

And, BTW, the biggest problem I had building a collection was finding all of my posts on this subject. Hashtag searching just didn't do it! And so I still don't know if I've got them all. Is there a secret?

Beautiful Weed

So... I don't usually post two photos at a time and I don't usually post what I don't know what is. (Sorry, Mrs. Brock, I'll get English right some day.) But this week I'm kinda flat outta time. This is my notice, dear #wildflowerwednesday fans, that #wildflowerwednesday is taking tomorrow off. I am up to my eyeballs in grading, all of which must be done by midnight Sunday. Then.... freedom!

Now, what do I have here? I'm sure some of you will know. It's a very common weed in Louisiana. I needed one more shot for the scavenger hunt, so I left the house yesterday afternoon, drove to the edge of a field 5 minutes away, and sure enough found this lovely patch of... well, weeds, but all abloom. This particular beautiful weed at an earlier stage is more yellow-green and looks for all the world to me like oatmeal coated stalks. I never before noticed how gorgeous it is when it turns bright pink. Of course, the late afternoon light was also making it glow. And I honestly don't know what it is!

Go ahead and post as you wish tomorrow. If anyone else wants to take up the curatorial reins, be my guest! I'll be back next week.___
