In 1997, Bugs Bunny appeared on a U.S. postage stamp, the first cartoon character to be so honored, beating the iconic Mickey Mouse. The stamp is number seven on the list of the ten most popular U.S. stamps, as calculated by the number of stamps purchased but not used. The introduction of Bugs onto a stamp was controversial at the time, as it was seen as a step toward the 'commercialization' of stamp art. The postal service rejected many designs, and went with a postal-themed drawing.

The "Oscar' figure is intended to be a knight, standing at attention and holding a sword. The Art Deco style in which it is rendered gives him extremely streamlined features. The Oscar statue weighs 8.5 pounds and stands 13.5 inches tall. It is constructed of Britannia metal with gold plating, and the base is made of black metal.

Good thing it's 'gold plated' - Britannia metal's composition is approximately and typically 92% tin, 6% antimony, and 2% copper!!

Motorola began life in Chicago, Illinois as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation–named after founder Paul Galvin. One of their earliest products was a car radio designed by Galvin and Bill Lear. Galvin and Lear ironed out the design relatively quickly but mulled over a catchy name for some time.

During a cross country trip the two came up with what would go on to become one of the best-known technology firm names of the 20th century: Motorola. They named the little radio after the very thing it was attached to (the motor inside a car) and added the suffix -ola so that people would associate it with well-known musical devices such as the Victrola record player.

Galvin Manufacturing Corporation’s car radio proved to be such a massive success that they changed the company name to Motorola.

I was very interested in this article regarding the Cyrus Cylinder since it has had such a storied history in political, governmental, and religious thinking over the years. However, when I read 'Cyrus was the very image of a virtuous ruler, so it is apt that the first time it will be seen in the U.S. is in Washington, D.C.' I spat out my morning coffee and laughed out loud, startling the entire family! Really? Equating a 'virtuous ruler' with the U.S. seat of government? Really??

'I was the one that had found the 47% tape' Self-congratulatory egotism is the only means of attaining a 'smidgen' of relevancy?!?

To be honest, there was no win or lose to the U.S. Presidential election; Romney defeated himself, while Obama won by default.

The greatest number of children born to one woman is 69. The 'lucky' lady was a Russian peasant who gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets between 1725 and 1765.

World Pangolin Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of February.

Take a two-minute break and be totally amazed by these bipedal, scaly mammals who have valves in their orificest that close up when they get attacked by the ants whose home they are destroying and relatives they are eating! I'll celebrate any animal that is an efficient ant predator!!

US Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrate from Illinois, said of the issue, 'Businesses in Illinois aren't looking for a handout from Washington. They don't want special treatment. All they want is a level playing field. By giving states the authority to enforce existing tax laws, the Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013 eliminates the competitive advantage currently enjoyed by many internet retailers at the expense of local businesses. Every day we don't act to pass this bill, we risk another small business closing its doors because they can no longer survive.'

If 'brick & mortar' stores actually competed with online sellers, they would not need legislation to 'level the playing field'! Such legislation does nothing more than line the coffers of an already greedy state tax system that is bloated and corrupt!!

These days we are used to being inundated with Spam messages–unsolicited advertisements that pile up behind our email spam filters every day. In the early days of computing, however, it was considered poor form to waste precious resources with such commercial pandering. All that changed in 1978 when a young Gary Turk fired off an unsolicited email to 400 people on ARPANET (the precursor to the Internet) pitching his new line of personal computers.

The email proved so unpopular and the backlash against sending an unsolicited commercial email was so great, it was over a decade before anyone else tried their luck with shotgunning commercial emails out over the network.

Ear Infection

This is so true! They always ask at the doctor's office why you are there, and you have to answer in front of others what is wrong and sometimes it is embarrassing.

There is nothing worse than a Doctor's Receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong with you in a room full of other patients.

I know most of us have experienced this, and I love the way this old guy handled it.

A 75-year-old man walked into a crowded waiting room and approached the desk.

The Receptionist said, 'Yes sir, what are you seeing the Doctor for today?'

'There's something wrong with my dick', he replied.

The receptionist became irritated and said, 'You shouldn't come into a crowded waiting room and say things like that.'

'Why not, you asked me what was wrong and I toldyou,... more »
