Google Students2,489,396We are getting ready to launch the *2013 Building Opportunities for Leadership and Development (BOLD) Internship* application. The 11-week, paid summer internship is Google’s only non-technical, undergraduate internship program and offers participants the opportunity to make an impact in one of our business units. The experience also includes professional development opportunities, exposure to careers in the technology industry, mentorship support, social activities and more.  To better prepare interested applicants, the BOLD team will be hosting a Hangout on Air on *Tuesday, October 16 at 4 PM EST/1 PM PDT* here on the @101571483150813305324 page. We will answer questions about the application, the selection process and the various components of the internship.  You can submit your questions and vote for previous ones here (http://goo.gl/oBNUh) or by using the hashtag #BOLDHangout  on Google+ or Twitter. No worries if you can’t watch the Hangout live - we will upload the recording to the Google Students YouTube Channel (http://goo.gl/xaAIo) Learn more about the BOLD Internship Program by visiting www.google.com/students/bold.Hangout On Air: Google BOLD Internship Program2012-10-16 22:00:00356

INCREDIBLY REALISTIC PUMPKIN-CARVED PORTRAITS by Alex Wer

Alex Wer is an awesome artist who can take just about any image and turn it into a piece of everlasting art, by carving it into a craft pumpkin. His Halloween creations look too good to be real.

Known as “The Pumpkin Geek”, he first started exercising his awesome talent as a pumpkin carver two years ago, by accident. His wife asked him to carve a pumpkin for her office Open House, and since he had always enjoyed carving pumpkins, he thought it would be fun.

He only has a few weeks until Halloween, so he had to decide between carving a real pumpkin that would spoil within a week, or go for a craft pumpkin that could theoretically last forever. He went for the second option, and although he only created a logo and some script, Alex’s pumpkin was a hit at his wife’s event. Before he knew it he had 35orders ... more »

Before he knew it he had 35 orders for custom logos and children pictures, and his “Orange Empire” was born.

He started experimenting with what’s called “4 color carving”, where 1 area is completely cutout, 2 different levels of depth, and finally, a layer untouched for the darkest portion of the image. This style gave him a lot of versatility and allowed him to create really detailed works of art that seemed to impress his clients. He got better with each new craft pumpkin he carved, but even now every pumpkin takes Wer between 4 and 6 hours to complete.

Space Litter: When does the garbage pick up truck come?
It's getting crowded up there: 15,000 pieces of junk plus 1000 active satellites, and counting.

• Sources include defunct satellites, rocket stages used to place satellites in orbit, bolts and other mission-related debris, and fragments from the intentional or accidental breakup of large objects. Also, the rare failed spacecraft that has stalled in orbit, such as the Russian Phobos–Grunt probe that just crashed to earth.

• The single largest debris generating event was in 2007, when China destroyed its polar orbiting satellite with a missile, resulting in 3000 trackable objects and 150,000 fragments of >1 cm size. The accidental collision of the Russian Cosmos 2251 and US Iridium 33 satellites in 2009 was responsible for another jump in space debris in 2009. Together, these two events effectively wiped out all space debris mitigation efforts until then (see graph, image 2).

• The risk of collision and damage at low earth orbit (<2000 km) is now at a few percent, comparable to other types of satellite failure like electrical defects. The Kessler syndrome describes a potential domino effect or feedback runaway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessler_syndrome). Space elevators, listed in the recent BBC poll as one of the top 20 predictions for the next 100 years, would almost certainly intersect with this debris.

TIGERS ARE AWESOME - some facts and photos

You can hear a tiger roar over a mile away!

A tiger can eat 100 pounds of meat a night! Compare that to 400 hamburgers! They need a lot of food because they go days between meals.

Tigers have been called man eaters, yet they eat frogs, monkeys, porcupines fowl, and tortoises, especially when a good deer is hard to find.

Tigers have eyes that are the brightest of any other animal in the world. At dusk, or in the beam of a torch, they blaze back the ambient light with awe-inspiring intensity.

Tigers can see in the dark six times better than humans can. They can also see in color.

The heaviest tiger recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records is a 1,025-pound male Siberian tiger.

Young tigers live with their mother until they are two to three years old, then they find their own territories.

The life span of tigers in the wild is thought to be about 10 years. Tigers in zoos live twice as long.
