Google Play, the world’s largest eBook collection, just got bigger. Now, you can upload your own files to Google Play Books to access on your Android (http://goo.gl/dxf9K), iOS (http://goo.gl/5wk00) and the web (http://goo.gl/FcHPe). Since several people have asked about this: If you want to see posts in a single column in the new Google+ UI, instead of in multiple columns, scroll to the top of your stream. To the right of your circles is a "More" menu. At the very bottom of that menu there's an option to switch between single- and multi-column mode.

Some highly-requested improvements to Hangouts On Air

Have you ever missed the beginning of a live Hangout On Air and wanted to rewind? How about viewing and sharing your recording right after your broadcast, versus waiting for "processing…"? Today we're launching these, and two other features, to improve your Hangouts On Air experience:

- Rewind live broadcasts. Regardless when you start watching, you can always go back to the beginning.

- Access recordings immediately after your broadcast. Once you're no longer On Air, your recording will be waiting for you on YouTube.

- Watch higher quality Hangouts On Air on the go. If you're tuning in from your mobile device, you'll notice better-looking video.

- Start live broadcasts without having to refresh. When you visit a page with a Hangout OnAi... more »

South Station has #goneGoogle

Boston commuters can now get some work done while waiting inside for the T, train, taxi or bus at South Station. Starting today, we’ve invested in a new infrastructure to support free public WiFi at South Station.

We’ve helped Boston businesses go Google, from Costco to Johnny Cupcakes. And we also understand that Bostonians want to be connected, whether at work, home or on the go. The new WiFi network at South Station will help Bostonians get the most out of the web and make the most of their city.

I have been following (and participating in) MOOCs since the beginning of them. I've participated in the Michigan State webinars on MOOCs, engaged in the discussions on the WPA listserv, attended numerous conference presentations on them (ATTW, GPACW, CCCC, etc.) and still have concerns.

At graduation on Friday, the speaker said that he sees MOOCs as a resource to courses, but not a replacement for courses.

With the schools participating in the Gates Foundation supported writing MOOCs having questions regarding whether this is viable for writing in large-scale feedback-required courses, how do we begin to think about assessment and feedback that goes beyond peer feedback for MOOCs -- or can we?

I have attached another article that was in the Chronicle on MOOCs and the move to not use them.

Advertising has gone through waves of changes throughout history, while maintaining the mindset of captivating an audience in the most compelling of ways.

Whether to inspire, to evoke emotion, to educate or to entertain, today’s age of advertising is now more driven by creative and innovative usages of technology and digital media. We are more connected to the world and to the brands we love than ever before, through various means and channels that were never thought possible.

The project Art, Copy & Code (http://www.artcopycode.com)  is experimenting with innovative brands to bring amazing ideas to life through technology. The project outlines a series of six trends in digital creativity.

This week, we will be posting a daily post that will illustrate one of these 6 trends in digital creativity along with an example from a brand that brings theseconce... more »

This creature is called Glaucus atlanticus. It is an extremely dangerous, camouflaged sea slug. It preys on venomous animals like the Portuguese Man-Of-War. The slug consumes the entire organism and stores only the most venomous nematocysts for its own use. The venom is then concentrated, which produces a more powerful venom than that of the Man-Of-War jellyfish it feeds on. Glaucus atlanticus is also a hermaphrodite, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs... A truly unbelievable animal. https://www.googlesciencefair.com/

It is my go-to place to remind myself of where I am in the universe and how little most of my problems are. It also reminds me that there is stunning beauty beneath our feet and we forget to think about it as often as we should.

One of the delights of walking around Vegas at night is seeing well-lit scenes that are seemingly so foreign to the actual city. I've always loved the waterfalls at the Wynn, and at night the entire scene is wonderful. What made it even better was the silhouettes. I caught this shot on the fly, while walking down the street and trying to catch up to family. It was worth the stop.

Googler Spotlight: Self-writing code engineer

Our engineers work on all kinds of interesting projects, from Gmail to data centers to self-driving cars. We spoke to software engineer Taylor Santo, who developed our latest innovation, self-writing code.

How did the idea for self-writing code come to you?

I have a friend who works on the self-driving car project and he’s always bragging about how easy it is to commute when the car does the work for him. One day, it occurred to me— it’s one thing to save your effort and energy on the commute to work, but it would really be awesome to save your effort and energy while you’re AT work.

How did you go about actually creating the self-writing code program?

It was pretty simple to write actually. I just put a function within a function, a loop within a loop, copy-and-pasted a fewtimes an... more »
