[It took a few days, but now I know why Robin Williams' death hit me so hard.]

These past couple days I've felt raw. I've felt uncomfortable, unsettled, distressed, on edge. I haven't been sleeping well, tossing and turning beneath my sheets, my mind racing.

I've been unusually upset over Robin Williams' death since I heard the news, but I couldn't quite pinpoint why. And despite this seething unease, and contrary to my normal, empath self, I hadn't yet let out a primal sob of mourning as one might expect.

But then...last night. Like a startling, sobering break through the fourth wall, last night my Facebook feed was flooded not with the normal, banal status updates of gym boasting and selfies, but with conversely weighted, gut-wrenching news story after news story from around the world. What results can you safely share with prospective employers?

Hi, all! I have an interview/resume/portfolio question. Surprisingly, this has not come up for me before, presumably because social media was (is) still so new and was getting figured out, and for that same reason, this makes it a tricky situation to pin down, but I'm wondering what results are acceptable for you to share with prospective employers.

Obviously anything that is public-facing is fair game (e.g., standard engagement numbers, follower growth, etc.), but what about more backend info, like impressions, reach, views, CTR, etc.? The latter group seems to be more the impressive KPIs you'd want to share in an interview to showcase your results, but this could be considered sensitive info, and could both piss off your current/former client/employee,  as well as make the prospective employerh... more »

The latter group seems to be more the impressive KPIs you'd want to share in an interview to showcase your results, but this could be considered sensitive info, and could both piss off your current/former client/employee,  as well as make the prospective employer hesitant to hire you for fear of you likewise sharing sensitive info if they're more locked down on it. It's a little easier to mask specific numbers if you're just doing overall percentage increases, but if it's showing success of a finite campaign, that's harder to get around.

Unfortunately, it seems like there is no current industry standard on this, so how do you make sure all parties are comfortable? Are there any tricks that enable you to safely share more sensitive info? ___

I know it's been a while, but I wanted to share this important update. As some of you may have heard, my mom has cancer. Stanford called and they're now able to get my mom in for surgery tomorrow. This is a huge step forward, but of course it is just the beginning of her healing process.

A number of you have reached out to ask how you can help (thank you!). The most immediate need at the moment is the substantial financial impact of having cancer.

As many of you know and have experienced first-hand, my mom has devoted herself to a life of being in service to others as a healer. As a result, she lives a very modest life, so the cost of this unforeseen illness is considerably significant. Beyond the high price of treatment alone, my mom will be unable to work for up to three months (perhaps longer depending on secondary treatment); in need of healthy, whole foods;... more »

As a result, she lives a very modest life, so the cost of this unforeseen illness is considerably significant. Beyond the high price of treatment alone, my mom will be unable to work for up to three months (perhaps longer depending on secondary treatment); in need of healthy, whole foods; medications, etc, etc. As you can imagine, it adds up quickly and can get overwhelming.

The goal is to raise $10K to help ease this burden. What a wonderful gift it would be to have that completed by this Friday so she can go into her surgery with peace of mind and a feeling of love and support from all of us. We are just about halfway there, but we still have half to go with only one day left.

They say that love kills cancer. So--let's show my mom just how much she is loved. Can you donate?

(And please feel free to share the post! Deepest of thanks from me and my family.)___

For once, a YouTube comment that actually makes me feel better about the intelligence of humans:

"Thus we see the priorities of a certain segment of America. Parents, be warned: Instead of a dangerous hoodie, send your teenagers out draped in racks of Funyuns and Coke Zero, and this country will pity them and want vengeance on anyone who might harm them. If only poor Trayvon Martin had been carrying a few cases of Skittles and iced tea, rather than single portions.

"So here’s your Vine, so you can stop posting it. Yes, indeed, it is too bad the rioters hit this poor man’s store. If only Michael Brown had been a 7-Eleven, you might have been outraged over his demise, too."

[The Artistic Love Loop]

Some days I think I miss being in love because I miss having an inspiration to write beautiful things.

Other days I think I miss being in love because I miss having an excuse to write beautiful things.

It’s a subtle difference, but in the last couple years I’ve realized that being in love, or rather, loving someone, is my greatest artistic outlet. It gives me a reason to begin producing again, like all my creative stirrings were just bouncing around inside of me looking for a route out.

And because of this, sometimes it can feel like this person I am enamored with is not so much the source, as the subject. Not so much the inspiration, as the instigator. A target, rather than a well.

This is not to say my affections aren’t personal, or sincere. But more that there is almost a sense of relief in finally having a defined point upon which I can now direct my artistic efforts. It creates a creative constraint: something I’ve always needed to produce anything of substance. Nothing worse than a blank page.

And it always leads me to wonder how much what I create is for me, rather than for them.

Are my grand romantic gestures and outpourings of prose actually in proportion to the love I feel? Or is it merely a scratching of that creative itch—self-satisfying, and art for the sake of art?

After all, if you were a sculptor, and you were moved to create something, would you hold yourself back and do less than you were capable of producing for fear of coming on too strong? Offending the viewer in the boldness of your work? Or would you unleash your full creative potential and produce the sculpture as was intended by some force greater than yourself?

So, likewise, if being in love is my artistic outlet, how am I to restrain myself? Withhold the creativity that is begging, aching to be let loose? It is, after all, so easy and enjoyable to be carried away. Is that irresponsible?

But then I wonder whether, in offloading such packages of affection, in creating these words and whimsies of love, you actually create love. Much like the simple act of forcing a smile can initiate a positive feedback loop and create feelings of happiness (see: http://bit.ly/1yqQe89), can the mere production of artistic romantic expressions for someone likewise spark or amplify your feelings of love for them? Yesterday I read these passionate love letters from Vladimir Nabokov to his wife and — once I was recovered from my swooning — wondered if he got pulled into this artistic love loop, too: http://bit.ly/1G0O2bI.

Mind you, I don't think it's a negative thing. In fact, maybe this is why creative people seem to love so much deeper and with such passion. With each romantic artistic expression, they're continually intensifying their love for that person and reinforcing its profundity. It's easy to get caught up in that.

So is this why I can fall so easily in love with a stranger? Begin narrating in my head the tender, teasing conversations we will have while cooking breakfast together, pancake mix on the tip of my nose, the sound of butter sizzling in the pan? So quickly link my first name to their last, like a teenage girl scribbling on her middle-school Trapper-Keeper?

In my enjoyment of writing the story, do I write it into existence?

Do any of you fall into this artistic love loop, too?

Does love feed art? Or does art feed love??___

[Will this be the photo that that changes it all?]

A day late for #FeelGoodFriday , but man... this one really got me.

I was already in tears at the mere sight of it, and just how much it represented (a photo like this holds innumerably more than just a thousand words), but then I read the story of what lead to this hug, and then, then I read the the amazing story of just who this boy is (seen here: http://bit.ly/1rHvI0t), and for a moment, somehow everything painful that happened in the wake of Mike Brown's death seemed justified--intentioned almost, as if it was all orchestrated perfectly in order for this precise, poignant moment to occur, and to be seen 'round the world.

I'm not saying Mike Brown's death is justified, or any of the other young black men who have been killed recently, but I do believe there are people who come into the world and, on some higher plane, volunteer to serve as the canary in the coal mine. They sacrifice themselves for the greater good, and make such a dramatic, bold demonstration of something that needs change, that we are irreversibly moved, and we can no longer ignore the imbalance.

Not only is this photo exactly what we need right now, my larger hope is that this will open up channels for this remarkable young man, and he can emerge as one of the leaders we so desperately need right now. A change-maker in the making. <3

Just found a note I wrote to myself half asleep upon waking from a dream, in which Will Ferrell said to me:

"When you're laughing, you transcend your reality, and for that moment you can see what life can be like.

"That lie you tell yourself is the lie you want to aspire to."

Heavy shit, man. Dream Alida (or in this case, Dream Will Ferrell) always delivers. ♥

You know...when you slow it down, rep it with a library backdrop, and sing it on top of some smooth-ass keyboard wooing, somehow "Wont you meet me at the bar? Respect big pimpin'. Tell me how you feel, mama, tell me what you sippin'" suddenly sounds...Shakespearean romantic?

Idk dk. Just listen. And do some warm-up stretching, because you about to pick yo' panties up off the floor.

Hi. Read this.

And prepare to utter "whoa." Excerpt:

"Saartjie was a woman whose large buttocks brought her questionable fame and caused her to spend much of her life being poked and prodded as a sexual object in a freak show.

"Sound familiar?

"But something tells me Kim probably has no clue about the cultural and historic significance of what she’s done. Instead she probably just thought it would be cool to do an edgy photo shoot with famous photographer. And many of you have fallen for that oversimplified stance as well."

(Internet bickering aside, I actually think what I'm arguing is an important point and worth discussing. I'd love to hear your thoughts.)

"Well, yeah, I started doing some research about the carbon footprint of zombies, and I just started feeling really morally and ethically conflicted about my lifestyle. I mean, what kind of world do I want to leave behind for my undead children? What is my legacy long after I've died, then come back to life, then died again, you know?"

You're this rabid over a network that can't even specify what the requirements are for a username and pass, and when it rejects your submission it doesn't tell you why? Nor does it require you to submit your password twice to ensure that what you entered is what you thought your entered?

Who the shit made this? Someone that's never seen a website before?

[We Flooded Wall Street]

As the day-long protest on Wall Street today winded down, and I weaved my way through the crowd toward the subway, I overheard a civilian inquiring of a police officer what was going on.

"Oh, so they're trying to take over the street?" she asked.

The officer scoffed. "Yeah, but they're not going to."

"Not going to?" I stopped in my tracks to interrupt proudly. "What do you mean not going to? WE DID."

[Creative parenting at its best? Or worst? You decide!]

I'll admit it. I was a major temper-tantrum thrower when I was a kid. My parents, my mom especially, quickly realized that the best way to break me out of it and my sulky mood was to make light of the situation and to get me to laugh. (A teasing "I see that smile..." and "Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na BRAT GIRL!"--sung to the tune of the Batman theme song--were two of the most often utilized.)

This dad, however, takes it to a whole new level. Hysterical.

I know some people have criticized the family for not responding compassionately to the child in distress, but I have a feeling those naysayers have never had children. ;)

Is praise poisonous?

"Unhurried, she talked to the child, but more importantly she observed, she listened. She was present.

"Presence, he argues, helps build the child’s confidence by way of indicating he is worthy of the observer’s thoughts and attention — its absence, on the other hand, divorces in the child the journey from the destination by instilling a sense that the activity itself is worthless unless it’s a means to obtaining praise. Grosz reminds us how this plays out for all of us, and why it matters throughout life:

"Being present, whether with children, with friends, or even with oneself, is always hard work. But isn’t this attentiveness — the feeling that someone is trying to think about us — something we want more than praise?"

Huge, huge milestone for women in tech.

Google's own Megan Smith just became CTO of the United States.

Megan Smith Named CTO of the United States!

Today +Megan Smith (formerly VP at Google[x]) joins President +Barack Obama as the Chief Technology Officer of the United States of America. Megan co-founded Women Techmakers in 2012 with +Stephanie Liu, and seeing the potential for building on the movement to empower women in technology, Megan and I created my current role as Google's Women in Technology Advocate. Megan has been an advisor to Women Techmakers despite her busy schedule advocating for women and children globally, and I'm honored to have worked side-by-side with her to enact change. I'm proud of my friend and mentor, and look forward to seeing the impact she'll make in her new role.

And no, fewer dresses is not a viable option. ahem

"But, but…here is the thing. In terms of the internet, nothing has happened yet. The internet is still at the beginning of its beginning. If we could climb into a time machine and journey 30 years into the future, and from that vantage look back to today, we’d realize that most of the greatest products running the lives of citizens in 2044 were not invented until after 2014. People in the future will look at their holodecks, and wearable virtual reality contact lenses, and downloadable avatars, and AI interfaces, and say, oh, you didn’t really have the internet (or whatever they’ll call it) back then."

What are you still holding out for? What do you think the future of tech will be?

[Why do we always have to be doing something?]

It was such a nice day out that all I wanted to do was just be outside this evening enjoying the warm and weightless air.

So I grabbed my kindle. Made sure my phone was charged. Contemplated bringing my laptop, and considered what I might work on to keep myself busy seated out in my backyard--even though I was totally burnt out looking at a screen all day. This gathering of gadgets to keep me occupied was compulsive.

Then I remembered that it's absolutely okay to just be outside doing nothing but nothing at all. Unengaged. Still mind. Still body. Letting being outside be reason enough.

Funny how we're so conditioned to think we have to always be doing something.

It hit me on all sides, relentlessly slamming me with a right hook, then a left hook, then a right hook, then a left. Punch after punch.

There were journalism articles about the teenage Michael Brown being shot dead in the street. About his grieving community being further beaten down by police, about them peacefully fighting for justice, all while knowing that they once again, likely won't get it. Because they're poor, and black.

Then after that, in painful contrast, a story of the time Robin Williams burst into Christopher Reeve's hospital room dressed as a Russian proctologist sent to perform a rectal exam, just to get a laugh out of his old friend facing the very real possibility of death.

After that there was the story about the young gay man savagely beaten unconscious this week and left to die in a San Francisco park. About my community back home alarmed and frighten by the rising rate of violent crimes in our city so known for its love and tolerance.

And then? Someone recounting the time Robin Williams sat down and shared laughter and late-night diner coffee with a shell-shocked family just come from their grandparents' wake. It was the first time they'd smiled in days.

Articles about children dying in Gaza, menacing threats of us bombing Iraq again, athleticism once more taking precedence over rape, Sudan refugees, Ukraine violence...

And between each of these, more personal accounts from ordinary people and celebrities alike of Robin Williams being a kind, honest, generous, compassionate man humbly spreading light and laughter everywhere he went.

These stories of his unconditional love for everyone who crossed paths with him appeared innumerable, streaming into my news feed faster than I could consume them, and yet always seemingly kept pace by other stories of tragedy, horror, unspeakable cruelty, injustice. The way these narratives of Robin's silent heroism were so evenly dispersed between news of terrifying inhumanity...for a moment it felt like Robin alone had taken on the world, made it his personal mission to do everything he could to counteract the darkness he felt internally, and witnessed externally, by beaming out his beacon of joy and irreverent silliness, and by tirelessly committing to random acts of kindness everywhere he went.

It was dizzying, this polarized influx of information, pulling my emotions every which way, but at least it felt in balance, alternately interspersed like this. For a moment it felt like we'd be all right. That there was just enough hope and sweetness in the world to get us through.

And then I came to this photo.

And I fell apart.

It was 1:30 AM and I wept in my apartment.

That face. That tenderness. That vulnerability. It ripped me to shreds because Robin's spark was one of the brightest of them all, and this week, despite his own pleading advice to us, he lost it. He lost the fight. And the world dimmed immeasurably.

The fact is, and as trite as this is to say, we need people like Robin in this world. Now more than ever. And yet even he couldn't bear it anymore. And as Russell Brand so astutely questioned, "Is it melancholy to think that a world that he can’t live in must be broken?"

But here we are still, while he is not, left to process all the torment and unrest in the world. How can we not feel alone? Abandoned? Hopeless? But as his family urged in the days after his death, use his life as inspiration. If even he could search through his deep, internal darkness of depression and dredge up light and kindness to share with the world, imagine what the rest of us could do. Just imagine.

So do it. No matter small or big, do it. And do it now. It's never too late, never too early.

And oh, hey: love you, noodles. It's always, always good to mention that, too. ♥

"If officers are soldiers, it follows that the neighborhoods they patrol are battlefields. And if they're working battlefields, it follows that the population is the enemy."

Please read and give it some thought. Are you concerned? Do you think it's appropriate that our police force have these types of weapons? Is it overkill or is it necessary?

Damn. A great find by +Carter Gibson. Watch for the spin, folks. We are all dynamic individuals with many sides to us, many stories to tell. We are not so unidimensional. And regardless of whether you dress or speak a certain way, no matter what the story of your life, no innocent person deserves to be murdered by someone designated to serve and protect you.

"If they gunned me down, which photo would they use?"

This blog, following the death of Michael Brown, is fantastic. A blunt acknowledgement that we are all dynamic and complicated, but can be portrayed in any number of paper-thin ways. #IfTheyGunnedMeDown

See the full blog here: http://bit.ly/IfTheyShotMeDown___Damn.

Of all the pieces I've read, this is one of the most compelling and poignant yet. Beautifully written from the perspective of someone sitting on the same ledge that Robin did; the sad clown tormented by demons, struggling with addiction, people laughing all the way as he inches closer and closer to the edge. Outstanding commentary from a fellow comedian who knows that fight all too well.

(And my hardcore crush on +Russell Brand grows stronger still.)___
