as more media attention gets drawn to astronomer geoff marcy's non-apology and berkeley's total lack of disciplinary actions against, i have some more thoughts. i am also calling on my male colleagues to think of the male astronomers they know. if any of them "get away" with inappropriate behaviours... tell them to STOP IT!

because another serial sexual harasser among the senior astronomy community has been publicly acknowledged (although his institution's response has been pathetic...), i want to share my personal experience again to remind people there are several senior people who continue to get away with this bullshit behaviour. they're being protected by their colleagues rather than being called out by senior colleagues, leaving more and more victims to "deal" with the burden of these continuing power plays.

When you look up on a clear night and see stars, what are you really looking at? A twinkling pinprick of light with a hint of colour?
Imagine looking at a starry sky with eyes like prisms that separate the light from each star into its full rainbow of colour. Astronomers have built instruments to do just that, and spectroscopy is one of the most powerful tools in the astronomer’s box.
An article I published last week in The Conversation (which also got picked up by IFLS!).

this is a great website full of the astronomy folklore that i hear from other astronomers during late night observing runs (or at the pub, let's be honest!). did you now there were 6 bullet holes in the McDonald 107" telescope? TRUE! so many other good stories too. check out "astro anecdotes" - link in the blog post.

the "secret ritual" of every astronomical observatory: aluminising the mirror. at the AAO, we re-aluminise the primary 4-metre mirror every year. it's an all-hands-on-deck massive operation! this video shows how we do it!

It was January 28, 1986 when Challenger exploded and i watched it in my classroom at school. It was February 1, 2003 when the Columbia Shuttle disintegrated over Texas while I was waiting up after a night of observing to watch it pass north of McDonald Observatory.
I wrote about both events here.
