The Weather Channel2,701,320*Upload your photos to this Event on 9/19 or using the #sunsetday hashtag in a public post to celebrate #sunsetday!* Join us for an exciting 24-hour event as we send summer into the sunset in global fashion. We are asking our Google+ audience from around the world to grab your favorite camera on the evening of September 19 and snap your own unique sunset from your corner of the globe. We want to see all types of sunsets in a variety of settings; a city skyline, a beach resort, a beautiful countryside, a desert landscape, a dense forest. *Wherever you may be, please share/upload your sunset image with this event page on September 19.* You can also participate outside of this event page by submitting a public photo post and tagging with #sunsetday. A select number of our favorite photos will be shown on The Weather Channel and accompany a slideshow on weather.com. Other favorites will be posted and rotated through as the cover photo on both +The Weather Channel and the +Google+ Photos  Google+ page. Note: *Only photos uploaded and posted to the event page or associated with the hashtag #sunsetday on Sep 19 will be considered* We hosted two Hangouts On Air in preparation for Sunset Day. The first hangout focused on the meteorology behind sunsets including the reason behind the beautiful array of colors.  The second hangout concentrated on the art of sunset photography. Expert photographers well known to the Google+ community talked about their techniques in capturing the perfect sunset. Links to both HOA videos are posted below. *HANGOUT SCHEDULE* 1. Fraser Cain946,538I'd like to invite everyone to enjoy the *Perseid Meteor Shower for 2013*. This is one of the best meteor showers of the year because it's very active - with upwards of 60 meteors/hour - but also because you get nice warm summer weather in the Northern Hemisphere. http://www.universetoday.com/103826/the-2013-perseid-meteor-shower-an-observers-guide/ The shower peaks on the morning of August 12, 2013, but you can see plenty of meteors for a few days before and after, as we pass through the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. Take some time right now to make plans with your friends and family to enjoy this wonderful meteor shower.  Find a place nearby with dark skies so you can really appreciate the meteors against the backdrop of the Milky Way. Pack some comfy camp chairs, a few blankets and bring snacks and drinks. A pair of binoculars would be nice, but they won't help you see meteors - you just need your eyeballs. Here's a great tool that shows you where there's light pollution: http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/ Find a spot that's at least green on the map if you can. I'll post more details to this event as we have more organized, but at the very least, click Yes to this event. Start planning your enjoyment of this once a year activity. Thanks to +Randy Halverson for the beautiful picture.Perseid Meteor Shower - 20132013-08-12 06:00:00425

Comment below how you think this could help your business and tell us all about your business - please keep it concise for now.3. Share this with other to expand your followers. You can share this Circle in three different ways:1. Followers2. Publicly3. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. Charles Lupica66,461             Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: A to JThis  is the first of two circles,  I'll share the second circle this weekend so that they're not so on top of each other.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Kat Scan and +Margaret Tompkins.  They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount.  Thank you all for all of your help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script is provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities or people that interact a lot with other people but don't post their own work will get filtered out along with the people that aren't really active.  ValidationThese two circles were very heavily vetted.  Of the original 2000 names, nearly 35% do not appear in either circle.  This is a result of the filtering I mentioned above and vetting of ever single profile in the list until we had enough names to make a list of 1000 names.  The list was divided into 6 parts with Bill Wood, Gemma Costa, Jen Baptist, Kat Scan, Margaret Tompkins and me each taking a group of names.  I tried to assign the list so that the pe2013-05-16 16:41:2850113075149

Sumit Sen57,209A Circle ShareCircle sharing by individuals seems to passé these days, and most shares are curated circles put together on some general basis by a few. That suits me fine because I am not fashionable and pretty faded! :)This circle is not one which contains all my best friends here or all the folks whose photography I really admire. It contains members who are my engagement set. People who follow my posts and people whose posts appear on my stream on a regular basis. Part of the selection has to do with Gplus's stream feed algorithm and part of it has to do with time zones. But these 200 are part of my life on GPlus now and I meet them virtually almost everyday.I am sharing this list mainly for the benefit of my new followers who are looking for worthwhile additions to their circles. I expect that they will not be disappointed by the selection. Finally, comments are closed. You can of course share and plus if you want to :)2013-03-23 15:19:4120001580

Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:145001353699

Jeff Sullivan1,152,722Most-Followed 500 Photographers CircleWhile a circle like this has the obvious drawback of missing some excellent photographers newer to the site, Charles often follows up his Top 500 Most Followed Photographer circle with circles going all the way down to photographers with less than 5000 contacts.  Here are four circles Charles has created to help us discover and recognize photographers at all levels within the G+ community:Under 5000 -    Under 7500 -    Under 15,000 - 500 Most Followed Photographers - (here)I like to interact with people who are active in photography... share at least a photo or two of their own original work per week, so I'll slowly whittle the circle down to a stream of excellent photography (I've started, but may not finish for a few weeks).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Charles Lupica  Charles Lupica Dec 25, 2012 (edited)  -  Public►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers list                   circle of 500             and Group 6: 421 to 500►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. If I'm missing anyone, please let me know.  I have specifically left off a few people who only share links to their content housed elsewhere,  people who share a lot of other people's work without sharing their own, or people that appear to be inactive. The rank numbers are off by 1 because I included the same person twice in an earlier list.#Top500CircleDec   #circleshare   #circlesharing   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  420 +Jennifer Luzio 21797421 +Matt Suess 21794422 +Nichole McCall 21754423 +Dane Clingan 21718424 +Xavier Ruiz Canadell 21700425 +Emi Fujimoto 21697422013-01-07 15:33:25500221350

Birds don't fly this high. Airplanes don't go this fast. The Statue of Liberty weighs less. No species other than human can even comprehend what is going on, nor could any human just a millennium ago. The launch of a rocket bound for space is an event that inspires awe and challenges description. Pictured above, an Atlas V rocket lifts off carrying NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission into Earth orbit 10 days ago to study the workings of the magnetosphere that surrounds and protects the Earth. From a standing start, the 300,000 kilogram rocket ship left to circle the Earth where the outside air is too thin to breathe. Rockets bound for space are now launched from somewhere on Earth about once a week.___One day I will get this photo..... Photo bucket list...

DO PEOPLE EVEN BUY PHOTOS ANYMORE? IF SO FROM WHERE AND WHY?

So this is a question I asked in one of my communities and I am curious as to what others might think about the Mix of Aviation images and artistic images or even the ability to sell an image that is edited vs. photo-journalistic in nature?

I know what I would buy - but honestly I would not know where I would want to buy it from and or how much I would want to spend.. Or if I even want to buy an image that is not my own... that sounds terrible but it's reality....

PS: Photographers are terrible at purchasing photos....

How do you purchase images?

Road trip stopping at major U.S. landmarks

After less than a minute, the genetic algorithm reached a near-perfect solution that makes a complete trip around the U.S. in only 13,699 miles (22,046 km) of driving. I’ve mapped that route below.

Note: There’s an extra stop in Cleveland to force the route between Vermont and Michigan to stay in the U.S. rather than go through Canada. If you’re able to drive through Canada without issue, then take the direct route through Canada instead.

Click here for the interactive version
Assuming no traffic, this road trip will take about 224 hours (9.33 days) of driving in total, so it’s truly an epic undertaking that will take at least 2-3 months to complete. The best part is that this road trip is designed so that you can start anywhere on the route as long as you follow it from then on. You’ll hit every major area in the U.S. on this trip, and as an added bonus, you won’t spend too long driving through the endless corn fields of Nebraska.

Here’s the full list of landmarks in order:

Grand Canyon, AZ
Bryce Canyon National Park, UT
Craters of the Moon National Monument, ID
Yellowstone National Park, WY
Pikes Peak, CO
Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM

The USA via every popular major city

How it was done:
http://rhiever.github.io/optimal-roadtrip-usa/popular-cities.html

If you’re more of a city slicker, the road trip above may not look very appealing to you because it involves spending a lot of time outdoors. But worry not, for I created a second road trip just for you! The road trip below stops at the TripAdvisor-rated Best City to Visit in every contiguous U.S. state.

Note: Again, there’s an extra stop in Cleveland to force the route between New Hampshire and Michigan to stay in the U.S. rather than go through Canada. If you’re able to drive through Canada without issue, then take the direct route through Canada instead. But really, Cleveland is a nice city to stop in (ranked #53 on TripAdvisor).

This road trip will more-or-less follow the same path as the major U.S. landmarks trip, covering a slightly shorter 12,290 mile (19,780 km) route around the U.S. Some larger states — like California and Texas — may have multiple cities you’d like to visit, so it’s probably worthwhile to stop at other larger cities along the route.

You may note that cities from North Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia are missing. Out of the top 400 recommended cities to visit on TripAdvisor, none were from North Dakota, Vermont, nor West Virginia. This is especially interesting because TripAdvisor reviewers recommend cities like Flint, MI — the 7th most crime-ridden city in the U.S. — over any city in North Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia. I’ll leave the interpretation of that fact to the reader.

Here’s the full list of cities in order:

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Wichita, Kansas
Denver, Colorado
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Phoenix, Arizona
Las Vegas, Nevada
San Francisco, California
Portland, Oregon
Seattle, Washington
Boise, Idaho
Park City, Utah
Jackson, Wyoming
Billings, Montana
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Omaha, Nebraska
Des Moines, Iowa
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Chicago, Illinois
Indianapolis, Indiana
Louisville, Kentucky
Columbus, Ohio
Detroit, Michigan
Cleveland, Ohio
Manchester, New Hampshire
Portland, Maine
Boston, Massachusetts
Providence, Rhode Island
New Haven, Connecticut
New York City, New York
Ocean City, New Jersey
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Wilmington, Delaware
Baltimore, Maryland
Washington, D.C.
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Charlotte, North Carolina
Charleston, South Carolina
Orlando, Florida
Atlanta, Georgia
Nashville, Tennessee
Birmingham, Alabama

Had to finally give in and look this up - This is because my Mom was an English teacher and I HATED English classes... Well that and the fact this is not confusing at all...!!!!!!!

Meaning of Affect and Effect

In order to understand the correct situation in which to use the word affect or effect, the first thing one must do is have a clear understanding of what each word means.

Affect is a verb. It means to produce a change in or influence something.

Effect is a noun that can also be used as a verb. It means a change that occurred. When an "s" is added, "effects" means personal belongings.

Just wanted to confirm that the rumors are true -- I’m excited to be running Google’s Photos and Streams products!  It’s important to me that these changes are properly understood to be positive improvements to both our products and how they reach users.___Well - this is either the end of G+ or the beginning of G+ - I guess we will see what happens...

I rarely post referral links - but this is a good one.. so I use the personal Capital App to track all my personal finances - investments - DEBT - etc.. it works really well for being able to quickly see how terribly your investments might be doing.. Use this link: http://refer.personalcapital.com/share/k43om    and it appears you will get a 10 buck amazon gift card and I will get one ... it could be the best investment you will make.. well at least you will get 10 bucks out of it.. Bear in mind you do have to link an account, but if you have any investments or debt you want to track this app is in my opinion way better than Mint etc..

Review: Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor - U3415W

So first thing to say is I have been using Dual monitors for a long time, so long that when I try to get work done on a single monitor I feel I am easily half as productive.

I implemented dual monitors in my office at work and now no employee would have it any other way. It was the cheapest way to increase productivity I have found in business.

All of that said, this monitor is very large but it is not at all the same experience that using dual monitors gives you. Many things change when you replace dual monitors with a large single.

For me I have replaced (at least for the time being) two Dell U2412m - So 2 - 24" monitors replaced by one 34".

All of that said, this monitor is very large but it is not at all the same experience that using dual monitors gives you. Many things change when you replace dual monitors with a large single.

For me I have replaced (at least for the time being) two Dell U2412m - So 2 - 24" monitors replaced by one 34".

The curve that is a huge piece of this monitor is interesting but really it is also slightly annoying when used for a work environment - but for movies and games it is quite nice to have the "more immerse feel" to the monitor.

Here is something else you need to know before buying any new monitor these days. CHECK YOUR CONNECTORS - You might be amazed that many of the new monitors have done away with DVI or they have gone to very different connectors, so check them before you move everything off your desk only to find that your new monitor or your computers video card will not support the insane DPI these new monitors can produce.

I will admit I in no way miss the typical most annoying feature of using dual monitors, that of the place the two meet in the middle. What I do miss but I feel will resolve itself as I make my way through re-sizing each application is how you can snap or re-size on dual monitors with much less issues than this monitor.

Dell does include an interesting monitor control manager application that allows you to set up per app many aspects of how the monitor will work - to include - regional zone re-sizing and monitor mode changes for items like movies, Games etc.

Basically the monitor is supposed to understand what you are doing and adapt to your applications and what you are doing.

More to come as I use it for the next several weeks.

If you have questions fee free to ask them.

Reddit users were asked “What’s the laziest thing you’ve ever done?” And one former sailor’s response is so incredible we had to share it.

We usually only write about Alabama-related things, so let’s just assume this took place aboard one of the Alabama-built Littoral Combat Ships.

I was once on a US military ship, having breakfast in the wardroom (officers lounge) when the Operations Officer (OPS) walks in. This guy was the definition of NOT a morning person; he’s still half asleep, bleary eyed… basically a zombie with a bagel. He sits down across from me to eat his bagel and is just barely conscious. My back is to the outboard side of the ship, and the morning sun is blazing in one of the portholes putting a big bright-a** circle of light right on his barely conscious face. He’s squinting and chewing and basically just remembering how to be alive for today. It’spainful to watch.more »

It’s painful to watch.

But then zombie-OPS stops chewing, slowly picks up the phone, and dials the bridge. In his well-known I’m-still-totally-asleep voice, he says ‘heeeey. It’s OPS. Could you… shift our barpat… yeah, one six five. Thanks.’ And puts the phone down. And then he just sits there. Squinting. Waiting.

And then, ever so slowly, I realize that that big blazing spot of sun has begun to slide off the zombie’s face and onto the wall behind him. After a moment it clears his face and he blinks slowly a few times and the brilliant beauty of what I’ve just witnessed begins to overwhelm me. By ordering the bridge to adjust the ship’s back-and-forth patrol by about 15 degrees, he’s changed our course just enough to reposition the sun off of his face. He’s literally just redirected thousands of tons of steel and hundreds of people so that he could get the sun out of his eyes while he eats his bagel. I am in awe.

He slowly picks up his bagel and for a moment I’m terrified at the thought that his own genius may escape him, that he may never appreciate the epic brilliance of his laziness (since he’s not going to wake up for another hour). But between his next bites he pauses, looks at me, and gives me the faintest, sly grin, before returning to gnaw slowly on his zombie bagel.___

Now this is truly amazing.... I feel extra small in our universe today..

NASA recently released a 1.5 billion pixel image of the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor, which contains over 100 million stars and spans more than 40,000 light years – and that’s just a section of the galaxy.

This image, created from a mosaic of 411 Hubble pictures, was then used by YouTuber daveachuk to create this incredible fly-through video. Combined with gorgeous music from the band Koda, it’s an awe-inspiring – and humbling – experience.

Comet Lovejoy, naked-eye!
From StarTalk photographer Elliot Severn: Comet Loveloy is now a naked eye object in dark areas and is an easy target for binoculars and telescopes. Here's where to find it as of 1/8/15. It will be slightly higher each night. See more of Elliot's work at: http://www.spaceflightphotography.com/___Go out and look up!
