Mike Barad483I'm interested in growing my Technology Circle. My specific interest is #mobile apps and tech, but I'm happy to have a broader web and software-development crowd as well. I'm looking for people who like to share content, engage on posts, and enjoy Google+. I'm sharing my curated Technology Circle here with you, many of whom are included. If you have a similar circle to share, or a few suggestions on people to follow, pay it forward. Also feel free to share my circle with others if you find it valuable. Thanks!2014-08-04 19:22:43121000

CK Wylde1,228A Circle Share Of Crazy People - Also Known As WritersI've not really shared circles before but every time +Brian Buckley does it I end up with fantastic new people in my feed.  So I thought I would share my writer's circle with you all. In it you will find  a bunch of G+ Writers and people who have to do with writers (publishers for instance).  WarningI tried this a little earlier and had a couple of people say they couldn't see the people in the circle. If you can't please let me know, I'm trying to figure out why that might be happening. Also, if you happen to know why that happens I am all ears.If you want to be included in this circle, also plese let me know.  #writers   #circleshare   #circles  2013-11-18 20:32:284401519

Their content, personality, and overall presence on Google+ provides irreplaceable value to other members of the community. Two days ago, I asked the question: "Who are 3 Google+ users you couldn't live without?" After hundreds of comments came in, here's the Circle that everyone created!Original post: goo.gl/P4D8HFull details: Every [valid] suggestion was added to this Circle. Suggestions made on reshares of the original post were included unless the post was not share publicly. When people suggested more than three members, I chose the first three who were not already included in the Circle. Self-nominations were not included unless another user recommended that person. Pages were not included unless they represented a single person (for example, celebrities). I may do a Page version soon!#circleshare #circles #publiccircles2012-02-26 01:19:07305514868

The tides are turning slowly but surely. Two movies with big stars (Bradley Cooper / Jennifer Lawrence and Julianne Moore / Jon Cusack) are available for rent at the same time they're planning on the big screens. We are living in the future.

So what is meta-design? In a traditional design practice, the designer works directly on a design product. Be it a logo, website, or a set of posters, the designer is the instrument to produce the final artifact. A meta-designer works to distill this instrumentation into a design system, often written in software, that can create the final artifact. Instead of drawing it manually, she is programming the system to draw it. These systems can then be used within different contexts to generate a range of design products without much effort.

Sounds great in theory and I certainly don't want to shoot it down just because that would make my job obsolete. However, I'm looking at the steady increase in the complexity of the systems we're building - from frameworks / platforms all the way down / up to apps - and I don't see an easy path forward to making things more effortless. But then... more »

Beyond avoiding beer, Cobol and Clear Case, I’m not entirely sure how I can alter my circumstances to the marching orders “be 10 times more awesome than you are right now!” What I do know is how I can, in a period of time, create 10 times as much value in the world of programming. It’s really pretty simple. I can, during that time, pair up with 10 less experienced developers and show them how to find solutions in minutes for things that would have taken them hours or days. I can make myself available to answer their questions. I can intervene at the point where they’d have thrown up their arms in frustration and despair and spent the rest of the day reading buzz feed and cracked. I can clear obstacles from their paths and help them get things done. I can get them excited about programming and enjoying their jobs.

If I were a high performing developer, but I did none of that, and just used those less experienced or less engaged developers as a prop to make the claim that I’m in some kind of elite club of “10x” people, the opportunity cost of my attitude would more than offset my skill from an industry perspective. If, instead, I help them up their game and overcome hurdles, then perhaps that 10x designation might actually mean something.

I was listening to Accidental Tech Podcast episode a couple of weeks ago, and John Siracusa had a very interesting thought. Paraphrasing, it went like this:

If you're part of a commission that is regulating an industry with a very few very big conglomerate players, and your decisions are greeted with praise by those players, you are not doing your job right.

It's only when they're angry that you should feel good about what you're doing. Unless you just throw random things at the wall, of course.

In which a bunch of profit-driven institutions try to argue that a party that loses in a court-disputed patent case should not pay the attorneys' fees for the winning party.

In which the same bunch of institutions argue they should not be held liable for frivolous lawsuits initiated by other parties they "license" their patents too.

America. WHAT ARE YOU DOING???

Yer passwords are worth about a dollar.

Under the settlement, tentatively approved by a federal district court in Northern California in late January, 800,000 American users who paid for premium services between March 15, 2006 and June 7, 2012, are eligible to make a claim on the $1.25 million settlement fund. After fees for the plaintiffs’ lawyers are deducted, that works out to about $1 per affected user. However, only those who apply will receive a share of the fund, which means the actual payment to successful applicants will probably be larger.
