Mike Barad483I'm interested in growing my Technology Circle. My specific interest is #mobile apps and tech, but I'm happy to have a broader web and software-development crowd as well. I'm looking for people who like to share content, engage on posts, and enjoy Google+. I'm sharing my curated Technology Circle here with you, many of whom are included. If you have a similar circle to share, or a few suggestions on people to follow, pay it forward. Also feel free to share my circle with others if you find it valuable. Thanks!2014-08-04 19:22:43121000

CK Wylde1,228A Circle Share Of Crazy People - Also Known As WritersI've not really shared circles before but every time +Brian Buckley does it I end up with fantastic new people in my feed.  So I thought I would share my writer's circle with you all. In it you will find  a bunch of G+ Writers and people who have to do with writers (publishers for instance).  WarningI tried this a little earlier and had a couple of people say they couldn't see the people in the circle. If you can't please let me know, I'm trying to figure out why that might be happening. Also, if you happen to know why that happens I am all ears.If you want to be included in this circle, also plese let me know.  #writers   #circleshare   #circles  2013-11-18 20:32:284401519

Suggestions made on reshares of the original post were included unless the post was not share publicly. When people suggested more than three members, I chose the first three who were not already included in the Circle. Self-nominations were not included unless another user recommended that person. And then, in that earlier post where I said that Business Insider would be the tech equivalent of Fox News based on how well-informed consumers of different media channels are about current events, one of the commenters asked for a link to the actual study, and I clicked through to the article to find that passage that I copy-pasted because I was pretty sure that it had a link embedded in it, and it turned out that the link was to, of all the ironical things, Business Insider regurgitating (as usual) the study without even providing any link to the original PDF, and I was all like...

Free speech, I want this to be said and I want this to be heard

Pretty much the only time I hear the words "free speech" being mentioned these days is when people want their opinions to be heard. But that's not what it's supposed to be, at least in theory. Sure, you're entitled, even legally guaranteed, to be able to express your opinions (short of well defined hate speech and variants thereof). But what "free speech" proponents really want is to be able not only to say what they want, but somehow legally obligate everybody to listen to what they have to say.

Here's how I view this specifically on G+. When I post something, I want that to be said. I can't force any of you handsome people to listen to any of it. You can mute a post. You can remove me from your circles. You can block me forever and ever. I won't even be heard to begin... more »

I won't even be heard to begin with if you didn't add me to your circles.

And then, when I decide to follow somebody, I express my desire for that person's thoughts to be heard. To be heard by me specifically. And, as a tangent, resharing a post is me agreeing that this wants to be said.

I want to be careful with commenting. When you leave a comment, you leave it on somebody else's stream (unlike sharing, modulo increasing the share count on the original post). There you start mixing what the original poster wanted to say, what you wanted to say about that, and what original poster's followers wanted to hear. This is no longer about your followers.

So when you're controversial just for the "fun" of it (aka "harmless" trolling), or being rather illogical (aka the argument of being a law abiding tax paying citizen entitles you to your own opinions no matter what the facts are) or just inconsequential (aka saying Hi, how are you doing on every single What's hot post), don't be surprised when people who want a bit more control over what they think wants to be said in their own stream show you the door.___

Somebody should do the same for tech news sites. Pretty sure Business Insider will be the parallel of Fox News.

But what is really frightening is the reach of Fox News. Fox News rated as the only real news source for consistent conservatives, with 47% of them citing it as their main source of news. Nothing even came close to touching it, as the second most common answer, “local radio” was cited by only 11% of consistent conservatives. Eighty-eight percent of consistent conservatives trusted Fox News. Mostly conservative and even “mixed” people also liked Fox News.

The problem with this is watching Fox News actually makes you less informed than if you don’t watch any news at all. In a 2012 study, Fox News viewers rated the absolute lowest in ability to correctly answer questions on a quiz about recent news events. People who didn’t take in any news programs at all did better on the quizzes. NPR listeners rated the best. Consistent liberals in the Pew research were big fans of NPR, by the way. It was the second most common outlet cited as a favorite by consistent liberals, topped only by CNN.

That’s why asking whether technology causes inequality is the wrong question. Instead, we should be asking how advancing technologies have changed the relative demand for high-skill and low-skill workers, and how well we are adapting to such changes. Wish I could jump to 2025 to see how these predictions will turn out. I do agree that quite a few icons on my home screen can be deleted since most of the time I interact with their "content" starts from the notification shade. It's harder to predict the evolution of aggregator apps such as Feedly or Pocket though.

Moretti's research into housing affordability found that tech growth in cities like Seattle has been the same to San Francisco relative to its size, but the rise in the cost of living is less than a third of that experienced in San Francisco. This is largely attributed to the city building more housing to meet demand. In a city like San Francisco, the restricted supply means that more people with more money are trying to move into existing housing units, giving landlords and real estate speculators the incentive to increase the cost of existing stock, even evicting tenants.

The solution, it would seem, is to simply build more. The city's stringent regulations make it an enormous challenge, though. I am yet to read a single article on the subject of San Francisco housing situation where people even mention the possibility of getting up, leaving and restarting their lives in a different place in this vast country. Add if being born in a certain place means that you have to stay there forever.

In episode 60 of Back to Work, Merlin Mann and Dan Benjamin discuss what they call “work as platform.” The basic idea is that we need to stop looking at work as a thing you do for a company. If you view your career like that, your success will always be linked to the success of the company, as well as your ability to survive within that particular culture. You will be at the mercy of people who are concerned about their own careers, not yours.

Instead, if you think about your work as platform, your attention starts to shift to using whatever job you are doing to develop your skills further, so that you’re never at the mercy of one company.

There’s something obviously illogical about free-speech panic among white Americans in 2014. Thanks to online publishing and social media, the barrier to entry for free public speech is lower than ever.  What I suspect truly bothers free-speech reactionaries is that the same, democratized new media that allows them to publish free-speech rants has opened public discourse up to a lot of people they’re not used to hearing from — women, people of color, and those Gamergate calls "social justice warriors," in particular. Some of the people who historically controlled the media uncontested might not like what these people have to say, but these newcomers are nonetheless very popular. And when a "social justice warrior" chooses to wield the "block" button against a troll, it’s not his freedom of speech that’s in danger, it’s his entitlement tobe heard.... more »

For all the Taylor Swift haters from my earlier post:

"But I’m trying to suggest that Taylor Swift’s ability to distill complex emotional experiences into broadly-appealing music and lyrics is an amazing talent. This kind of pop music has unique rules of engagement. It’s hard to write a catchy pop song. It’s really hard to use words to tell an emotional story with broad appeal while retaining nuance. Especially one that makes me want to dance, want to keep feeling a feeling. That requires a creative intelligence very different from most of the artists I mentioned above."

Some sort of glitch in the Canadian version of iTunes Tuesday morning led to the release of what was ostensibly a new track from her album. The record, for now titled only “Track 3,” is nothing more than eight seconds of static, but that didn’t stop fans from taking it straight to No. 1.

That time where you've sent me that cookie-cutter pitch for an unnamed company and I wrote a polite "thank you, but I'm not interested" reply is not going to form the basis for "our ongoing conversation" where you keep on sending me emails about random positions in Seattle or Boston every week or so.

Thanks

Major carriers have sophisticated fraud systems in place to catch hackers before they run up false six-figure charges, and they can afford to credit customers for millions of fraudulent charges every year. But small businesses often use local carriers, which lack such antifraud systems. And some of those carriers are leaving customers to foot the bill.

The last part is mentioned repeatedly throughout the article. Sounds almost like an infomercial / native advertising for Comcast.

The greatest power of online discussion communities, in my experience, is that they don't aspire to be global. You set up a clubhouse with reasonable rules your community agrees upon, and anyone who can't abide by those rules needs to be gently shown the door.

If you ever see comments on my posts disappearing, that's just me gently showing the door. There are usually only two strikes before the door closes. Otherwise the toxicity is simply not worth the noise.
