Mike Barad483I'm interested in growing my Technology Circle. My specific interest is #mobile apps and tech, but I'm happy to have a broader web and software-development crowd as well. I'm looking for people who like to share content, engage on posts, and enjoy Google+. I'm sharing my curated Technology Circle here with you, many of whom are included. If you have a similar circle to share, or a few suggestions on people to follow, pay it forward. Also feel free to share my circle with others if you find it valuable. Thanks!2014-08-04 19:22:43121000

CK Wylde1,228A Circle Share Of Crazy People - Also Known As WritersI've not really shared circles before but every time +Brian Buckley does it I end up with fantastic new people in my feed.  So I thought I would share my writer's circle with you all. In it you will find  a bunch of G+ Writers and people who have to do with writers (publishers for instance).  WarningI tried this a little earlier and had a couple of people say they couldn't see the people in the circle. If you can't please let me know, I'm trying to figure out why that might be happening. Also, if you happen to know why that happens I am all ears.If you want to be included in this circle, also plese let me know.  #writers   #circleshare   #circles  2013-11-18 20:32:284401519

Their content, personality, and overall presence on Google+ provides irreplaceable value to other members of the community. Two days ago, I asked the question: "Who are 3 Google+ users you couldn't live without?" After hundreds of comments came in, here's the Circle that everyone created!Original post: goo.gl/P4D8HFull details: Every [valid] suggestion was added to this Circle. Suggestions made on reshares of the original post were included unless the post was not share publicly. When people suggested more than three members, I chose the first three who were not already included in the Circle. Self-nominations were not included unless another user recommended that person. Pages were not included unless they represented a single person (for example, celebrities). I may do a Page version soon!#circleshare #circles #publiccircles2012-02-26 01:19:07305514868

Historically speaking, Hollywood studios have not traditionally been (certain personality types aside) Stalinist. Five-year plans, let alone seven-year plans, were, for a long time, anathema to a business that wants to be able to roll with whatever the hot new thing is. A decade or so ago, industry observers scoffed at the cart-before-the-horse presumption of the first studio to grab a release date a couple of years down the road for a movie that wasn’t even written or cast yet. But what then screamed of misplaced priorities now counts as best practices. The notion that the movie (or even the idea for the movie) should come first is quaint. It now seems perfectly reasonable to studio heads to announce the general size, shape, and noise level of the product with which they plan to flood the market on a certain date; they’ll worry about what’s going to fill the box down the road.

What’s going to happen is, you’re going to have trouble finding distribution. In general, when you’re doing films like that, the ones that are critical, those aren’t going to be studio films anyway. Most of the movies that got us in trouble, we started out by raising the money independently. But to distribute, you’ve got to go to a studio, because they’re the ones that distribute movies. The truth is, you’re going to have a much harder time finding distribution now. And that’s a chilling effect. We should be in the position right now of going on offense with this. I just talked to Amy an hour ago. She wants to put that movie out. What do I do? My partner Grant Heslov and I had the conversation with her this morning. Bryan and I had the conversation with her last night. Stick it online. Do whatever you can to get this movie out. Not because everybody has to see the movie, but because I’m not going to be told we can’t see the movie. That’s the most important part. We cannot be told we can’t see something by Kim Jong-un, of all f*cking people.___

The Lord of the Rings made it seem that nothing was unfilmable (as long as a flight to New Zealand was feasible), and whetted the mainstream appetite for epic spectacle. So much of the trilogy’s appeal lay in the sheer scale of it all—the breathtaking sets, the spectacular vistas, the exhilarating battles. As Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone at the time: “What a kickoff. Fellowship is the real deal, a movie epic that pops yours eyes out, piles on thrills and fun, and yet stays intimately attuned to character.” The Hobbit trilogy still has all of that—some of it literally replicated—but it has lost its ability to shock us in the precisely the same way because those elements have become part and parcel of fantasy filmmaking. Less-successful imitators—the Narnia series, Eragon, The Golden Compass, The Spiderwick Chronicles—all attempted to replicate the Jackson-Tolkien formulaand normalized the fantasy ... more »

The Lord of the Rings made it seem that nothing was unfilmable (as long as a flight to New Zealand was feasible), and whetted the mainstream appetite for epic spectacle. Less-successful imitators—the Narnia series, Eragon, The Golden Compass, The Spiderwick Chronicles—all attempted to replicate the Jackson-Tolkien formula and normalized the fantasy experience. It is no longer spectacular, but expected, for the camera to glide over 10,000 Orcs ready for war. Audiences can see that sort of thing every Sunday on Game of Thrones.

It’s a common sentiment that the Hobbit movies just make people want to rewatch The Lord of the Rings. But as we say goodbye to Middle-Earth for the final time, take a moment to appreciate what Peter Jackson has done for the movies in the thirteen years since he first brought us Hobbits, Orcs, and Elves. The Hobbit movies aren’t as good as their predecessors, but that’s because The Lord of the Rings revolutionized the way movies are made and our expectations in watching them. Jackson may be an architect of his own demise, but what he created in the first place was glorious.

This week, the space agency released a satellite data analysis of how much water the state's reserves lack. It's a lot -- more than 14,000 times the amount of water it would take to fill the Dallas Cowboys stadium, according to CNN calculations.

Catching touchdowns from Brady, the New England Patriots’ superstar quarterback, is the easy part this season. The hard part is dealing with his celebrations.

“You’ve got to—got to—be prepared for his head-butts and high-fives, because they are coming…You’ve got to brace yourself. It doesn’t look like much coming at you but it’s intense,” said Patriots wide receiver Brian Tyms. “If he throws the ball 50 yards and you run 50 yards and score, he’s going to run all 50 yards and head-butt the hell out of you.”

The pilot partnership with AMC will allow MoviePass members an option, for $45 a month, to see films in any format, including Imax and 3-D.

This sounds an interesting proposition to frequent moviegoers such as self.

In which a random music industry middleman pines for the return of the days long gone, blaming the Internet for... Actually I'm not sure what he's blaming the Internet for. For making more music accessible to more people? For letting people vote with their wallets and not paying $15 for a CD with two great tracks padded with 10 more fillerfluff?? For finally letting people decide what they want to hear instead of what some random deciders think will sell the most records???

As Yahoo’s ad revenues continued to decline, de Castro began to alienate his staff and fellow executives. After one of his direct reports gave a presentation about Yahoo’s business in front of some 40 senior executives, de Castro humiliated the person, saying: “I think your strategy’s more of a fantasy. You make it up. You just make it up.” More important, advertising revenue declined in every quarter since he was hired. Within a year, Mayer had personally taken control of Yahoo’s ad team. De Castro would leave the company in January 2014. For about 15 months of work, he would be paid $109 million.___

There is no denying the seductive nature of convenience—or the cold logic of businesses that create new jobs, whatever quality they may be. But the notion that brilliant young programmers are forging a newfangled “instant gratification” economy is a falsehood. Instead, it is a rerun of the oldest sort of business: middlemen insinuating themselves between buyers and sellers.

Monday’s edition of New York magazine includes an irresistible story about a Stuyvesant High senior named Mohammed Islam who had made a fortune investing in the stock market. Reporter Jessica Pressler wrote regarding the precise number, “Though he is shy about the $72 million number, he confirmed his net worth is in the “’high eight figures.’” The New York Post followed up with a story of its own, with the fat figure playing a key role in the headline: “High school student scores $72M playing the stock market.”

And now it turns out, the real number is … zero.
