Neeta Tolani24,063Indians Active on G+Earlier this week, I made a post about trying to make my own "Indians Active on G+" circle. Thank you to everyone that contributed, re-shared, tagged and discussed this initiative. I've looked through every profile that was tagged and had the pleasure of discovering some very interesting people. Here is the circle I created. People in this circle come from all walks of life, live in all parts of the world and have diverse interests (sounds just like India :) .... and have a common thread binding them.. India. I've humbly included myself in it, but please feel free to remove me or anyone else if you'd like to re-share it. I've not added some folks with very large following that were tagged in the initial post. Will build this circle out a little more as I discover more people. Any new law that empowers law enforcement and transportation without changes in the way we do things is just another opportunity for corruption. We have not even been able to enforce the use of helmets.

Driving schools do not teach disciple, safety or respect for other road users. Its not surprising to see Indians who have been driving for decades in India routinely fsil driving tests in developed countries.

Indian roads are inadequate and poorly constructed for modern vehicles and their high speeds.

Pedestrians, two wheelers, three wheelers and heavy vehicles are never seperate factors while designing transport infrastructure in India.

Which is the biggest contributing factor to accidental fatalities.

Indian roads are by design built for disasters.

Laws do not make roads safe. Peaople do.

Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fantasies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them.

My dear friend,   I hate the behaviour  and actions of anyone who  perform acts of violence based on any medieval doctrine. However your statement is  unadulterated hate speech. You must be very young and new to this whole social media thing. I am sure you know that there is no such thing as anonymity online and beyond Google's Holy TOS you have broken a few laws. If you are unaware may I kindly point out at least one issues with your post.

I am all for freedom of speech. But it should be focused and addressed to those whom you feel have wronged, but when you direct your anger and hatred towards an entire group of people that does pose  problems with the law.

It was a Saturday afternoon I had lunch with a friend in Gurgaon before I decided to head home. The metro for those who do not take it or belong to Delhi can get crowded and air tight to an extent that the Tupperware guys could take inspiration. I luckily managed to find a seat till Rajiv Chowk metro station (Connaught Place) where I had to change my train. The doors opened… Btw I was in a regular and not the women’s only coach – why is this little detail important for this post? Well the answer lies ahead.

So where were we? Yes, the doors opened and people began to flood in. I tried to push and nudge my way out but no luck. With a huge sigh I decided to get off at the next station - New Delhi. As I positioned myself close to the exit door I felt a sense of unease run through my body, like someone has pierced their gaze on me or someone is watching me. Suddenly I felt something touch me from behind. With half my mind on trying to get off at the next station I turned thinking it was someone’s bag or hand touching me repeatedly. I turned to see a man in a white kurta (long shirt) staring right at me and he had no baggage with him. In fact both his hands were clenching the railing next to him. But if both his hands were up there what was it that… I got my answer as soon as I lowered my sight. There beneath that long shirt I could clearly see that this man was UNZIPPED. I felt the blood rush to my head, boiling and fuming and fury ran through every nerve in my body.

Within that fraction of a second every single eve teasing incident, every darn face of those guys who had the guts to molest someone I know flashed in my mind. Before I knew my voice escaped my lungs and there I was screaming at the man who dared to mess with me.

‘KYA problem hai?’ (What is your problem?)
‘Kya samjh rakha hai saale?’ (What the hell do you think?)
‘Himmat kaise huyi teri?’ (How dare you?)

These were some of the things I uttered looking right into his eyes. He was startled and started blabbering that he is sorry and insisted that it was his hand that touched me by mistake. Your ‘HAND’ that comes out from your pants? How the hell was your zip open? I was screaming in a coach full of men and women. Did anyone come forward to help or even displayed basic courtesy to ask me what was wrong? The answer was a big unsurprising NO. I turned and spotted two men in fact smirking at me. Their silence tried my patience and ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE.

I held that (namesake) man’s collar and dragged him out of the train. He was on a loop mode ‘It was my hand, it was a crowded train’. The moment we set foot at the platform he managed to escape. I ran, with all the strength and courage in me, I ran after him making as much noise as I could. A few saw (the tamasha), the others gasped while one man in the uniform began to chase him. I went towards the other side and we managed to get hold of him. I yelled again How dare you? How did you dare to touch me? People like you make Delhi a nightmare for girls? You make us question every time before we step a foot outside. HOW DARE YOU?

People watched the guards dragging a man to the control room and a girl screaming at him. They only watched.

As we took him to the control room he told the police that I am mistaken, it was his hand that touched me by mistake and it could happen to anyone because it was a crowded train. “Ask her… it was my hand”, he said. 15 guards, all men turned towards me as he tried to shame me. But if he had the guts to do it I had the spine to say it. You see anger brings out the strength you never thought you had in you but in my case anger brought out a language I never thought I could use. I was outright and I had all the right to be – “Lift up that kurta and you will know exactly what touched me”. There. I said it out loud and clear. The guards felt outraged and charged at him. Within seconds he begged for an apology and suddenly the hand in question transformed into a part of his body he wished he never had. “Why would this girl lie? After all she is taking the blame on herself”, said the police officer to the criminal infront of me. He committed the crime, I raised my voice and yet somehow the shame was on me. That statement reflected the thought process of our society, in fact it said much more. I argued with the officer and told the man in question that I have lost NOTHING in this entire episode and in fact I will make him pay for this. He immediately begged for an apology and I instead, insisted to file an FIR. After a few calls, 5 friends of mine reached the station to back me up and how? They were equally angered and showed no mercy.

We moved to Kashmere Gate police station and I slapped a sexual molestation case against him. He was arrested and put behind bars immediately. I decided to not let this one go and appeared at the court on Monday to record my statement in front of the magistrate. Meanwhile this man has been moved to Tihar jail and will spend his time behind the bars until he gets bail.

You see there are several measures being taken to make our public spots and transport safe. Someone asked me as to why I did not take the women’s only coach? But honestly that’s not a solution. These reservations in fact paint the idea that it is not ok or safe for women to be in public spaces. It's debatable, I know but are reservations really improving the situation? Then what would?

I think the answer lies within us. Unless women put forward that is not OKAY for someone to touch and get away with it, nothing will change.

I could just bite the bullet and accept that I was eve teased or molested. Or I can raise my voice and instill the fear in the criminal instead of victimising myself. If this man has the guts to unzip in a metro full of people, he probably started off by doing something less offensive to another girl. Her silence was his encouragement. Remember every time you choose to ignore or walk away, you put someone else in danger.

So I urge women to respect their body and know that it’s okay for you to say that someone touched you without your consent and you have to muster the courage to reach out to the police. I insist please for the sake of womanhood – SPEAK UP!

Five years of success but sky’s the limit for #DubaiMetro :

DUBAI // Five years ago today travel was revolutionised in the UAE thanks to the launch of the #DubaiMetro – the longest driverless metro in the world.

Thousands of commuters from Dubai and Sharjah who had relied on the erratic public bus services, illegal car lifts or were forced to shell out hundreds of dirhams on taxi rides were relieved that the metro, which hopes to break even in 2017, provided them a cheap alternative.

The 52-kilometre Red Line was opened by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, in September 2009 and began with 10 stations connecting Rashidiya to Jebel Ali. This was followed by the opening of the 23km Green Line in 2011, connecting Al Qusais to Dubai Creek. Five years on, 47 stations, including 10 underground, are operational.

For as little as Dh5.80, a commuter can get from one end of the city to the other on a regular ticket, while a gold-class ticket costs Dh11.60. A daily ticket with unlimited travel is Dh14 and a 30-day pass is Dh270, all of which are considerably lower in price than hiring cabs or risking fines using illegal taxis.

The Roads and Transport Authority said the number of passengers daily has jumped by nearly 10 times – from 60,000 passengers in 2009 to about 500,000 this year.

The total number of passengers has touched nearly half a billion in the past five years.

The aim is for the metro to account for 30 per cent of all journeys made in Dubai by 2030. Last year, the network accounted for 13 per cent.

The number of passengers has also had an impact on the bus network, as feeder buses carry commuters from neighbourhoods to the nearest station. Bus routes that previously lacked passengers have seen a surge in commuters, although residents have called for better connectivity, especially between emirates.

Meanwhile, the metro has also driven up prices of nearby offices and homes.

Real estate analysts see at least a “10 to 20 per cent” rental increase on retail and housing units near metro stations.

“This has happened in the past two to three years,” said Craig Plumb, head of research for Middle East & North Africa at Jones Lang LaSalle.

“Clients prefer to choose rentals close to #metrostations and this trend is likely to increase.”

However, he added that it would be tough to quantify the exact impact of the metro on the #realestate market.

Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the RTA, said: “We believe a key achievement has been the development of a transit-orientated culture in Dubai.

“Dubai Metro has contributed effectively in changing the community perception about public transport so that it does become a mode of choice and it has helped introducing the public transit culture among all segments of #Dubaisociety .”

He said one can only imagine what the roads would be like if the metro, which was the brainchild of Sheikh Mohammed, did not exist, adding that 80 per cent of metro users did not own a car.

The RTA said expansion to the Red Line and a massive upgrade to its road and #RailNetwork ahead of #Expo2020 was on the top of its agenda.

“We have a comprehensive rail network masterplan to meet the future urban and economic growth of Dubai. Within the coming few years, the RTA will be focusing on the planning and provision of the road and rail infrastructure required to serve Expo 2020,” said Mr Al Tayer.

“We are finalising a comprehensive transportation masterplan for this purpose. The Red Line expansion to the Expo 2020 site is one of the top priorities and is due to be operational ahead of the Expo 2020.”

There are also plans for six metro stations to be filled with public art, diversifying their use.

Despite the success of the metro in its first five years, the RTA said that it will still take three more years to break even. “We have put in place a plan that we strongly believe will see the metro break even and cover its operational and maintenance costs by end of year 2017. This is our target and we are tracking it closely,” said Mr Al Tayer.

He did not, however, reveal revenue figures but said the network generated income largely from ticket fares, despite several other revenue streams.

“We have other commercial revenue that comes from selling the naming rights of the metro stations, advertising inside and outside stations, rental of shops and spaces within the metro stations and our car parks at Etisalat, Al Rashidiya and Nakheel Harbour and Tower stations,” he said.

It's shocking, though not surprising, that Salman, the youth who'd been allegedly 'disrespectful' to the national anthem and flag, has been booked with sedition charges.

Though perfectly draconian, both in structure and history of abuse, the two other sections of IPC he's been booked with, along with sedition - Section 66A of the Information Technology Act and act 69 of 1971 Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act - could stand against him before a law enforcement officer in prima facie perspective. I don't agree with that legal logic, most of us wouldn't. These two acts are to be scrapped, and I don't believe that the charges would stand in a trial court. But at least there are probable justifications for a police officer, within his purview. It's the court to verdict. I condemn the use of these draconian law, I almost know you too.

But why sedition? It's a much graver charge, it's absolutely inappropriate (Did I say that it's appropriate to use 66A and act 69 of 1971? No, I didn't. They are draconian, and there is nothing called 'appropriate usage' of a draconian law) to use sedition in this case. It's a false charge, even within the primary legal logic, not even in a larger philosophical perspective. (One could argue that the whole concept of sedition itself is draconian. I disagree, nation state is not something to be ruled out, it's an inevitable evil in my current view. But I do agree that the argument indeed qualifies for discussion). He hasn't done anything to be booked with sedition. I agree, most of the sedition charges are proven false in courts, but at least state usually makes a 'legitimate' allegation. In this case, the allegation itself is clearly false.

**************************************************************************
IPC says:-
Section 124A. Sedition
1124A. Sedition.— Whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards. 2[* * ] the Government established by law in 3[India], 4[ * *] shall be punished with 5[imprisonment for life], to which fine may be added, or with imprisonment which may extend to three years, to which fine may be added, or with fine.

Explanation 1
The expression “disaffection” includes disloyalty and all feelings of enmity.

Explanation 2
Comments expressing disapprobation of the measures of the Government with a view to obtain their alteration by lawful means, without exciting or attempting to excite hatred, contempt or disaffection, do not constitute an offence under this section.

Explanation 3
Comments expressing disapprobation of the administrative or other action of the Government without exciting or attempting to excite hatred, contempt or disaffection, do not constitute an offence under this section."

**************************************************************************

The alleged 'disrespectful' behaviour, even if we take the police for face value, no way comes under any of these conditions. It's not just a mere false charge, it's to deny the bail as the other two charges are relatively feeble; to 'teach a lesson' whoever expresses her opinion free and fearless.

There are, at least, two different political problems involved in this case
1. Use of draconian laws against a merely negligible and probably silly reaction.
2. Misuse of a law with much graver implications on a completely inappropriate context. The charge doesn't stand against the alleged behaviour of Salman, either by intention or by result or even as a gesture.

**************************************************************************

Condemn both! I do, I hope we too.

Hi everyone,

I've been through this video 5 times now to make sure I capture everything being said and suggested. I also took notes and time entries for my clients, the video is long and extremely valuable so hopefully it will help others.

There are also important links at the footer that need to be read and followed by everyone attempting to go full HTTPS.

But the long and short of it is, if you follow the instructions to the letter then you will be fine with the switch.

I'm open to amendments and suggestions on what has been written.

Like tobacco, alchohol and drugs, belief in supernatural powers provides progressive stages of addiction. Some products provide a mild "buzz" with moderate and sometimes reversible effects. Others provide strong and irreversible addiction resulting in prayer, preaching and some amount of ridiculous behaviour.

The worst kind of such addiction will remove all cognitive and logical functions in the brain and allow the victim to believe any ridiculous and/or dangerous ideas often resulting in fatalities.

Mr. Chandy.

What exactly does it mean to be a "Global City" the phrase itself is ambiguous and pretentious. We don't even have national highways with central dividers. Power cuts even when dams are overflowing their capacity. Only less than 20% of the state has sewage and waste disposal systems.

Where do you find advisors to make such ridiculous satements.

Kerala Vision 2030 will be a major developmental initiative for the state. Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram will soon be global cities in the field of education. While Palghat will be a global city in technical education, Malappuram will lead in medical education. Kochi is all set to be a global city in all sectors.___Mr. Chandy.

We have never had a single ranking slot in any of the internationally recognised ranking lists in any faculty of education for the last 60 years. We don't even have a single medical, management or technology institute whose certifications are readily accepted for further studies in any developed nation without years of equivalency training.

Our code monkeys, call centre sweatshops and general bricks in the wall do not even need an education. We should simply change our entire curriculum to cater exclusively to multi national corporates and our educational institutions into back office executive training centres.

Saves shit load of effort time and money.
