The Shinjuku Doppelganger
Do we all have a doppelganger out there somewhere?
If we do, there is a high probability it is lurking in Tokyo's expansive underground network. That is where I found this one...
Keep an eye out!

Mundane Beauty
I know it sounds cheesy, but when taking photos I like to think I am finding the beauty within the mundane.
Whether the result is true or not doesn't matter so much. But that's what is happening in my head.

So Tired
I've been taking photos at my local park recently. But since I live in Shinjuku this park has probably never had a kid set foot on it. However, it is used quite frequently by the many people who partied a little too hard the night before.

This is a great project by Irina Werning. She replicated all of the photos so well and with a great sense of humor. I really enjoyed this one.

Pug Bloomenfield style
In these days of vacation I have the chance to play with my cute pet. He`s happy, very happy to in front of the camera. At least is what I`m telling myself.
Today I played a little keeping in mind the shot my buddy +andrew holian posted a few days ago with his version of a famous Erwin Blumenfeld self portrait.

The Blumenfeld
On the first day of a 4 day weekend here in Japan I was sick. Since I was stuck at home, I didn't want the day to go to a complete waste so I took some photos in the studio.
About a month ago I saw a great exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography by the late Erwin Blumenfeld. He is most popular for his color fashion photography but he also did quite a bit of fine art black and white photography.
This photo is a tribute to one of his self-portraits that I blatantly copied. I know...it is sort of creepy but I thought it came out cool. And you get to see my profile and the front of my face at the same time! Efficient :)
Here is a link to his version: http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/blogs/themoment/posts/0416dada.4.jpg

Organization
In the past week I have gone through 20,000 of my photos in attempt to organize them in a more sane manner. It has been a great experience to sift through my older shots and realize that some of the images I liked before are actually crap.
And some of the losers are winners now.
About 5,000 of the photos I am reorganizing were taken with the iPhone. Here is one I came across that caught my eye. #iphoneography

Viewpoint
Recently I went to watch a sumo tournament and I all I took were photos like this. I guess I don't feel that because I go to some tourist destination that I have to take tourist-type photos.
For example, if I go to Disneyland do I have to take pictures of Mickey Mouse?
I don't think so :)

Memories...
I am taking some time today to review and organize my photo catalog and I came across this shot from last year. It was taken on a 1 day trip to San Francisco with +Jonathan Goody and +Sly Vegas as my welcoming guides. Thank you both for showing me all of the great spots in SFO in such a short amount of time! Lot's of good memories.

Poles
Lately I have been slightly obsessed with using poles or trees in a composition to cut people in half. I will probably get over it soon but for now that is what I am doing ;-)

I Shoot in Volume
I shot film in college. I developed and printed myself too. It was fun, BUT I shoot digital now and I have no plans on going back.
Film is great but digital has too many advantages for me.
I am not going to bore you with every reason why I love digital, but a BIG reason is that it gives me the ability to cheaply shoot in volume.
When shooting digital there is little restriction to the quantity of shots I take in a given day (Sometimes I take 1,000s in a day. Oh my!). And when taking photos of kids moving back and forth on a swing the ability to rapid fire without worrying about going broke is nice too :-)

Sometimes choosing between B&W and color processing can be a difficult decision for me but this one was easy.
It would have been a shame to lose that yellow mustard.

A small collection from the late Garry Winogrand. He was a non stop shooter. He probably took more photos than all of us combined and did it on film ;-)

Tree Head
A man sleeping in front of Shinjuku Station this morning.
When composing the shot I couldn't resist breaking the rules by having the tree go straight through his head. hehe

Sakura in Red
Taking photos of flowers and trees doesn't excite me too much.
However, they do make for great backgrounds.

On the Road
I've been away from home lately so I have reverted back to the iPhone for taking photos.
Not a complaint because I have been enjoying the simplicity of it.

Exiting the Elevator
This is a serious problem in Tokyo.
There is a large population of horizontally-large characters in Japan, but nobody is doing anything about elevator doors that are comically too small.
Something needs to be done.

A Day at the Forum - Photo #2
Another from my one day project at the Forum. The reflections of light change constantly in their strength, shape, and size as the day passes. I tried to get a few angles from ground level and from above before the moment passed.
This is how I saw it from above.

A Day at the Forum - Photo #1
I love the Tokyo International Forum. Amazing lines, great light, and lots of open space. If you follow my stream, you may remember that my last project involved shooting with my iPhone everyday for 30 days. This time I decided to do the opposite and shoot one environment in a day with my DSLR. Actually, I was only there for about 5 hours. I'll be posting these shots for the next few days so stay tuned...
This photo project is a mere training session for the "big-one" coming up :-)
