Intermediate Photography Course
Weekly on Sunday Afternoons 3.00pm till 5.30pm (approx) from 21st October 2012
Location: Ian’s Studio

The course will consist of eight sessions (session 5 on glamour, boudoir, & art nude is option).  Each session will be two and half hours in length.

Each session will look at one or two related genres of photography.  We will cover techniques and equipment, and I will be providing practical advice and where appropriate I’ll share experiences from a professional perspective.

For tonight’s event we look at low key images.  Think dark backgrounds (not always black), think shadows, think side lighting.

I am pleased to announce that the model for this event will be Zombie Candy aka Amber Dolovak Amber has been to the studio twice before and has proved a big hit both times. We will also look at techniques to add a little colour to the dark background including the use of gels, and using coloured background but allowing them to go dark using the inverse square law.

Ok, before we have a witch hunt... I'd like to know some more info about these images. They are clearly straight out of the camera shots pre editing. The photographer was one of many who were shooting that day on their own set-ups, apparently under extremely difficult conditions. I've done a quick search (not extensive research) about this and the only people who are publishing the images appear to be people who want to criticise them. Have they been published by the US Olympic organisation? I can't find them. Have they been published by thephoto... more »

Time to start the hype.....

I have got lots of ideas for #IansStudio (+Ian's Studio) photography videos. Several of them are already in post production. Lookout for the official launch coming soon! The videos will include... "Creating a Caricature Portrait"; "How to create a multiplicity image"; "Stock photograph: Rights Managed or Royalty Free"; An interview with +New To Photo host +Richard Bradbury plus a couple of critique videos.

Do you want your photos critiqued?
I am in the process of recording a range of photography tutorial/training videos and I am looking for a volunteer to have have their some of their photos critiqued.

The critique will be in the form of a video, that will be released on my website and through various other channels (such as youtube). The critique will be constructive but it will also be honest - if I don't like something I will say so.

If you want to volunteer you will need to supply full resolution copies of 6-10 of your BEST images for me to critique. You will also need to ensure that the shooting data (exif data) is intact.

If you are interested. Do NOT send me anything yet - just reply to this post and I will select my first volunteer and contact you directly and tell you how to send the images to me.

You would be amazed at what gets left at the studio. Discovered this deodorant spray on the shelf where I keep the radio triggers. Don't know how long it has been there or who brought it in. But as I was short of a POTD and I need to increase my "product shot" portfolio it became my subject of the day. Thank you to who ever left it behind.

Me at the Bocca della Veritas (24 Feb 2004)
There is a legend that says if a liar put his/her hand in the Bocca Della Veritas that the mouth will bite it off. "The Staff" put me in there feet first, and I'll be honest I did struggle to get out. The staff said that makes me a "Bear-faced liar!". I wasn't amused!

Oddly enough The Staff sold this picture of me a few years later... to a Japanese TV company for use in a TV show. The staff said it was just bizzare... I said: "No... I am a mega star so why wouldn't they want me on their show?"

POTD 03 Feb 2012 : Nude woman with rose petals (34/366)

This is one of the images from our "Glamour Clichés Night" at the studio. The idea is that we take a clichéd glamour theme (in this case nude on a bed with rose petals) and after shooting the cliché we rework it into something a bit different. For the nude on bed of petals we decided to go for a shallow depth of field and a low angle. I've also decided to desaturate and soften the resultant image in post production.

Me at Trevi Fountain (24 Feb 2004)
They say if you throw a coin in Trevi Fountain, you will return to Rome. It doesn't work... or at least it hasn't worked yet.

You can't image the grief I got off "the staff" - he never stopped complaining about me throwing money away. I told him it's just a small coin, I'm a mega star, I can afford it. It's not as though it's his money anyhow... We'll actually I suppose it was... like the Queen, I don't carry money. And besides which I wasn't for throwing my money into a fountain!

A quick shot taken while filling up Ann's car. A little bit of spot colouring (shock horror) and a split tone blue effect. Also added a vignette to emphasise the darkness outside the filling station.

Me at the Colosseum (23 Feb 2004)
Emperor Beni the first of Rome... it certainly has a ring to it! I've always thought of myself as someone who should be in command, so Rome was the obvious place to go to visit, and I fitted in perfectly. Especially with my toga and laurel wreath. (The laurel wreath in ancient Rome was only worn by Emperors).

I particularly like the Colosseum. With the knowledge that the Emperor had the fate of people in his hands. Thumb up for life, thumb down for death. I've just overheard "The Staff" muttering something along the lines of: "Thank goodness the bear doesn't have thumbs" - if he carries on like this I'll be throwing him to the lions... thumbs or no thumbs!
