How many different astronomical phenomena have come together to create the above vista? Several. First, in the foreground, is Crater Lake -- a caldera created by volcanism on planet Earth about 7,700 years ago. Next, inside the lake, is water. Although the origin of the water in the crater is melted snowfall, the origin of water on Earth more generally is unclear, but possibly related to ancient Earthly-impacts of icy bodies. Next, the green glow in the sky is airglow, light emitted by atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere as they recombine at night after being separated during the day by energetic sunlight. "Citizens of Earth, get ready for your Cassini close-up: once again the spacecraft is preparing to capture images of Saturn positioned between it and the Sun, allowing for incredible views of the ring system and its atmosphere — and also a tiny “pale blue dot” in the distance we call home.
The mosaic above was composed of images captured during such an eclipse event in September 2006, and quickly became an astronomical sensation. It’s not often we get an idea of what we look like from so far away, and seeing our entire world represented as a small speck of light nestled between Saturn’s rings is, to me anyway, both impressive and humbling.

Storm on Saturn!
NASA's Cassini spacecraft has tracked the aftermath of a rare massive storm on Saturn. Data reveal record-setting disturbances in the planet's upper atmosphere long after the visible signs of the storm abated, in addition to an indication the storm was more forceful than scientists previously thought.
These red, orange and green clouds (false color) in Saturn's northern hemisphere indicate the tail end of the massive 2010-2011 storm. Even after visible signs of the storm started to fade, infrared measurements continued to reveal powerful effects at work in Saturn's stratosphere.
The Cassini mission is part of NASA's long tradition of exploring our solar system. +NASA

CBO: Immigration bill would decrease deficit by $197 billion over 10 years
In a boost for proponents of comprehensive immigration reform, a new report from the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the immigration bill currently being debated in the Senate would increase the U.S. population by 10.4 million and would decrease federal budget deficits by $197 billion between 2014 and 2023.
The much-anticipated report indicates that enacting the legislation would create new federal outlays of about $262 billion in the first decade but would increase revenues – largely from new income and payroll taxes – by $459 billion.
It also estimates that about 8 million undocumented immigrants would initially gain legal status under the bill’s provisions.

Traveling about 258 miles above the Pacific Ocean, the unpiloted "Albert Einstein," the European Space Agency’s Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) 4, docked to the aft port of the Zvezda service module of the International Space Station at 10:07 a.m. EDT. The craft is carrying 7.3 tons of science experiments, hardware, propellant, water and air to the six crew members aboard the space station. The Expedition 36 crew is scheduled to open ATV-4's hatch on Monday, June 17.
When its mission is complete in late October, ATV-4 will undock and burn up as it reenters Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.
