Why do we start the New Year again and again with a boring guilt trip, when we know that it won't help anyone? What if the resolution itself is the reason why we fail? We have the funny trait that we do what we shouldn’t do with more motivation, pleasure and esprit than what we should.

How about trying to be a bad bad boy, bad bad girl, bad bad man, bad bad woman, a very very bad bad person? Will that get us a better start?

Obviously, we need to find good reasons to be bad. That is logically and rhetorically not as straightforward as finding good reasons to be good. So I hope that you’ll forgive me some logical and rhetorical tricks in the following five minutes of diabolical advocacy of the ultimate evil: a praise of the seven deadly sins.

How do you deal with erroneous tweets? Not any erroneous tweets, your erroneous tweets. The tweets that you misspelled or, worse, that contain information you later discover is false, or a late night knee-jerk response you regret in the morning. What do you do when the retweets start and people correct you, and then people react to the reactions even though you deleted it right away?

I'm already getting annoyed with G+ again, as I just realized that some people (mobile Twitter for example) will see a G+ login page when I link to a discussion here. Or is that problem solved now?

After a couple of days reading through literally hundreds of (mostly positive) reactions I have even less doubts than before—Social Media buttons are useless:

http://informationarchitects.net/blog/sweep-the-sleaze/

What I didn't make clear enough in the follow up: Even if 20% of the tweeters used the buttons (it's actually more around 15%), how many of the total of all readers use them? 1% 2%? How much additional traffic do these bring? 1% 2%?

iPhone Market Size vs iPad Market Size

The sales numbers for iA Writer for iPhone start streaming in. Yesterday the we had biggest day since we first launched the iPad app. By far. As you can see from the curve, all our sales numbers have been dwarfed by the iPhone launch. What do the new numbers tell us?

Comparing Launch Day Data: Wow
Since it is a universal app, it is hard to say exactly, but, as far as I can see looking at the changes in the app store ranking, we didn't sell substantially more apps through the iPad channel. The resulting delta between the old curve and the latest spike thus is all iPhone apps.

Now, sure, a lot of active iPad and Mac users (over 60% of the 200,000 users that downloaded the iPad app so far keep using it regularly) have been waiting for the iPhone app. It is too early to tell for certain.

Still, if... more »

Can an agency have its own products? Can you do products and serve clients?

In 2009, +Craig Mod and me pitched a project to Paul Graham. He had doubts that agencies could pull off the jump from service to product. 37signals managed to pull it off, he said, but they are the exception to the rule. I thought: Why jump? Why not both? Do agencies not have a competitive advantage over regular startups?

There is this wide spread notion that, for some reason, an agency cannot launch successful products or that a startup cannot have service clients at the same time as they develop their own apps. I believe that assumption to be, at least, antiquated. Here is why...

The argument is usually that you don’t have enough focus on either if you do both your own products and client work. I always found that to be a plausible argument for startups (since they have no knowledgem... more »

How Samurais do meetings:

"You will be tripped up by people when your resolution is lax. Moreover, if at a meeting you are distracted while another person is speaking, by your carelessness you may think that he is of your opinion and you will follow along saying, “Of course, of course,” even though he is saying something that is contrary to your own feelings, and others will think that you are in agreement with him. Because of this, you should never be distracted even for an instant when meeting with others."

About the New New Twitter

John Gruber is trashing the new Twitter: http://daringfireball.net/2011/12/new_twitter

Here is what I think: I used it for a day now and I see some clear of improvements in the information design (on the Web, for instance: no more multiple scrollable regions inside the page, a clearer left to right orientation, less navigational blocks), and a couple of dubious moves, too (an uneconomic amount of lines, boxes and boxes in boxes, f.ex.). But these are details, compared to a more serious issue that Gruber points out when comparing the new mobile app to Tweetie:

"Tweetie presented three main things:

1. The main timeline, showing the tweets of those people you follow.
2. Replies/mentions, showing tweets where you are mentioned or addressed.
3. Direct messages, showing private messages in a IM-style threaded... more »

How to to climb in the App Store, Part II

Here is a run down on the stats, confirming my earlier suspicion that lowering the price doesn't help.

After the Lion upgrade that took so long because custom windows and custom text fields are so tough on Lion, sales fell in a typical app cycle curve. After lowering the price, the curve adjusted to the main curve within 4 days. In other words: Selling double the apps at half price. Just like I said in Part I (https://plus.google.com/115711522874757126523/posts/PoPTYdVFYyt).

Lately, with the iCloud, update sales exploded. The chart doesn't incorporate yesterday's and today's sales (massive jump over the weekend again).

Repeating, what I said before: To increase sales: Don't imitate. You might get some crumbs from some table but ultimately, you'll help the original by doing so. Innovate.... more »

Visualization: Amazon book recommendations

By +Audrey Watters

How does Amazon get its recommendations right? In part, by tapping into a larger network of those with the same interests and similar purchasing habits.

+Christopher Warnow has created a network visualization based on this data and written an app that utilizes the Gephi API. The tool takes a link from a book on Amazon and creates the network surrounding it, with up to 100 recommendations associated with the title.

In honor of the "rhizomatic" structure of this visualization, the attached screenshot and this video (http://vimeo.com/32559678) show the recommendation network around Deleuze and Guattari's Marxist classic "A Thousand Plateaus."

You can download the tool here (http://bit.ly/vonbyz), which will allow you to watch visualizations unfold in real time.... more »

One could easily write a book about these legendary 3 Minutes of Rock'n'Roll history: Elvis Presley - 1st TV appearance I got a woman Good Quality.mpg

I have 30 Minutes while my wife brings our son to bed. So I'll use this time to go crazy with something completely random and unrelated to what I usually write about.

Before getting into my interpretation, I suggest that you watch this gem Elvis Presley - 1st TV appearance I got a woman Good Quality.mpg again, and compare it to Ray Charles' original: Ray Charles - I Got A Woman

He's outperforming Ray Charles by factor 100. At this point you will already know that there was something extraordinary happening there. But what?

WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE?
Elvis had just sung his first piece on TV and had just warmed up singing Jesse Stone's "Sake Rattle & Roll." Elvis Presley... more »

Why is Apple uncomfortable promoting iCloud on OSX?

It's great to get featured on all app stores around the world, but I'm not sure I understand why Apple... hm... changed our design.

The first iteration (with keyboard) was not okay, because we're not allowed to show Apple's hardware

The second iteration with the cloudy background was approved, but I rubbed my eyes when I saw...

...Apple's own third iteration on the app store. They changed the iA Writer brand, and put a tiny centered (!) lame tiny tiny two liner beneath it. What's interesting about this is that they go out of their way to not say iCloud. I wonder why?

From our first wave of customer feedback, iCloud is working perfectly in 99 out of 100 cases. There are some cases where people have to link and unlink document synching on the first run, because... more »

I've been watching a lot of new app performances with majicrank. Surprised how super tough the iPad app store has become since last year. If you don't get featured by Apple, you need a Terminator like marketing machine to get visibility. It's similar to the iPhone app store now. Making it in the OSX app store is a piece of cake in comparison.

Learning so much about design doing this font redrawing, lately. Trying Italian, English and German sample text is another revealing exercise. The dominance of the English I (the round I doesn't work yet in my sample) and the relative monotony of short words and recurring letter combinations, the aesthetic annoyance of German captal letters and consonant crashes, the vocal and typographical beauty of Italian writing and how it influences the perception and creation of a typeface... No wonder so many nice typefaces came from Italy (best conditions) and the German (very hard conditions) speaking region. (This is all new to me, so pardon my naive statements, if you're a pro.)

The best way to climb in the App Store charts? No, it's not lowering the price.

It's innovation and care for details. iA Writer is the first cross plattform integration of iCloud. As pointed out by some users, we're now even ahead of Apple in terms of iCloud integration. Since we launched the new version, our downloads are skyrocketing. And that without being featured yet. Which is extremely rare. On launch day alone, iA Writer for iPad has been downloaded 29,000 times. And given that it's iOS5 only that's a surprising number.

In the chart below you can see the comparison between lowering the Price from 9 to 5 Dollars (7/11) and raising the price back to 9 while upgrading Writer with iCloud (29/11).

While it's easy to get a bump by lowering the price the effect will wear out quickly and you'll make the same revenue for a short... more »

I found this font years ago in one of my old letter pressed books and since then I wanted to work with it, but couldn't find anything alike, so I redrew it and filled in the blanks (about 1/3 of the characters needed for English and German were missing).

This is the first draft (I'll call it Reverendissima), so there is still plenty of room for improvement, but before I go crazy with it: Does that font exist in digital form already or is it as much a find as I thought?
