Penn and Teller - The Vatican

This episode no longer officially exists. Strings were pulled to make it disappear. There are shocking revelations about Ratzinger and Vatican influence of politics in Italy and the United States.

The Vatican episode was the finale of season 7 of Bullshit. It was retroactively censored by Showtime. It was not included on the season 7 DVD or streaming video (see Amazon for many strong comments), and is no longer listed on the official web site. This is sad, since this episode discusses very important issues of censorship and the social impact of secrecy - using power to control and suppress speech.

Watch it and share it with others! Download, copy, distribute. Don't let it disappear. Don't let the cover-up succeed. Don't let this information be suppressed.

Augmented Reality Geeks & Futurists - Watch This!

Sight is a brilliantly conceived short film that imagines the future of augmented reality with lifestyle software and extreme gamification. While the tongue-in-cheek futurist humor should not be taken too literally, the technological vision of the future is well-executed. It creates a novel portrait of the possibilities of AR and ambient software in everyday life.

Very relevant to social networking strategy. Since the site is established, there's traction to build on, but because the features and focus are new, there's still an early adopter advantage. #strategy

Epic 81 days without leaving the office. Developer vows to stay "until we ship". New site launched just in time for the holidays.

What inspired that level of dedication and passion?

LockerDome already had 20+ million monthly visitors, as the "Facebook of Sports". The new site was going way beyond that. Beyond sports, and beyond what other social networks were doing.

Solving a Fundamental Problem that Matters to You

We find our favorite things online. Things that make us laugh, make us think, expand our worldview. Things that define and shape us, reflecting our values and passions. We share. We build up a public identity. We participate in social network activities in many ways, but it tends to be ephemeral. Fleeting. The past is a long scroll over a long timeline. One big intimidating list. It can be searched, but there's no meaningful structure. With no organization, a bunch of stuff is just a storage shed, not a collection.

The collection outcome should follow from the collecting activity.

Lockers
- your lockers = your interests
- like photo albums, but for anything
- each locker is a followable channel
- follow only lockers that interest you

Organize is work, Collect is play
- simple to hang the same stuff to multiple lockers
- over time, you have an organized collection instead of a messy timeline

Collaborate
- share locker ownership with friends and collaborate
- create public community lockers for open contributions to a theme
- class projects, group efforts, artistic collaborations

Hashtag support everywhere
- hashtags are followable channels
- they link your content to similar content

Live embeddable content
- embed content or channels in blogs and websites
- collect in one place

Content creators
- articles, blogging, photos, video
- multi-channel publishing and discovery support
- supports long-tail content, since every re-share or comment is a bump

Unified conversations
- for the same link, photo or video, all comments go to the same place
- unifies the conversation across different lockers and different users
- the opposite of G+ where every share fragments the conversation

To answer the question that is still on your mind, the developer was +Cryptic Swarm. This was a team effort, with an incredibly hard-working team, but his epic effort deserves recognition. I'm one of the developers, and I'm in awe of my teammates, the product we are building, and where it is heading.

Happy Holidays!

SkyCube - Crowdsourcing a Satellite Mission

For a small pledge, you can fund a portion of the mission, send tweets from space, and take your own photos of Earth!

This is a very cool project, and could be a great way to get children excited about space science. It may even inspire larger crowdsourcing projects for space exploration.

"We are developing a nano-satellite, and mobile apps to go with it, as the focus for a global education and public outreach campaign.  The satellite, called SkyCube, is a 10x10x10 cm "1U" CubeSat intended for launch as a secondary payload on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in 2013.  Orbiting more than 300 miles up, on a path highly inclined to the Earth's equator, SkyCube will pass over most of the world's inhabited regions."

This week's  #ScienceSunday  Digest from +Mark Bruce is a must-read!

SciTech #ScienceSunday Digest - Week 30 of 2012
A Top 10 selection of the scientific and technological advances that I discovered this week.

1. Reactionware and 3D Printing: Programmable Chemical Synthesis from Base-stocks.
A visionary group of chemists led by Lee Cronin has created a rudimentary prototype programmable chemical synthesis device via 3D printing http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2012/jul/21/chemputer-that-prints-out-drugs. This “chemputer” technology enables the 3D printer to print the actual reaction chambers that are required for subsequent synthesis of the desired chemical, and the printer then injects the “chemical inks” of base-chemicals to create the desired synthesis steps to produce the more complex end product. Their current system is very early stage. But the potential for future developments of systems like this immense. At home capabilities would include synthesising your own drugs, household chemicals, and different 3D printer inks, for example, simply by downloading a configuration file from the Web and providing you had the same basic feedstock molecules to start the process with. These designs could be tinkered with to create better molecules and catalysts. In related news another group is making progress in controlling chemical reactions for a single molecule http://www.nature.com/nphys/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nphys2373.html.

2. Weapons and 3D Printing: The First Gun Printed in Someone’s Home Workshop.
I’ve actually been waiting for this announcement for about 18 months; a working and fully functional gun has been produced in someone’s home workshop with a 3D printer http://thenextweb.com/shareables/2012/07/26/the-worlds-first-3d-printed-gun-is-a-terrifying-thing/. To say it works means that the guy fired off over 100 rounds with it. This is an example of the double-edged nature of technological evolution in that we can all ultimately use a particular technology for good or bad purposes. I’m a technological optimist however and think that the benefits in this and so many other cases far outweigh the possible downsides. Oh, and while you’re busy printing your own weapons in your basement, why not use a next generation Chemputer (from #1 above) to print your own gunpowder and explosives while you’re at it?

3. Optogenetics Makes the Jump to Primates: Humans Next?
Researchers have finally transistioned optogenetics technology into the brains of primates http://www.technologyreview.com/news/428622/scientists-control-monkeys-brains-with-light/, the next step for setting the stage to introduce the technology into humans. Optogenetics involves infecting neurons with genetically engineered viruses that cause the cells to produce bacterial cell-wall proteins that are sensitive to light of a certain wavelength - by shining light on the cells the neurons can be quickly switched on and switched off at will. Future applications in humans include disease treatment, advanced brain-computer-interfaces, and cognitive enhancements.

4. Mimicking Human Physiology with Networked Microfluidic Chips.
After successfully creating a human lung-on-a-chip and human gut-on-a-chip microfluidic systems (previously referred to in SciTech Digest) the research team has been tasked, and funded, by DARPA  to build 10 different human organs-on-chips and link them together to mimic whole body physiology with the aid of automated instrumentation http://wyss.harvard.edu/viewpressrelease/91/. These chips recreate the microarchitecture and functions of living organs and together, by providing a whole “human-on-a-chip”, will enable massive gains to be realised in drug screening and development.

5. DNA Origami Creates Effective Synthetic Vaccines.
The techniques of DNA origami have been used to create DNA nanostructure scaffolds to which antigens (target proteins) and adjuvants (immune stimulants) have been attached to produce a synthetic vaccine http://www.biodesign.asu.edu/news/scientists-explore-new-class-of-synthetic-vaccines-. Mice administered with the vaccine developed a robust immune response that was 9 times greater than a simple mixture of antigen and adjuvant and this established an important proof of principle for this as a foundational platform for the rational design and construction of a wide range of vaccines.

6. Single-Photon Transmitter Breakthrough.
Physicists had a major breakthrough after successfully constructing a system that is capable of transmitting single photons while blocking multiple photons http://www.mit.edu/newsoffice/2012/single-photon-transmitter-could-enable-new-quantum-devices-0725.html. Building on the technology that was developed for slowing down light in ultracold clouds of atoms, such a system might enable the creation of quantum logic-gates and single-photon switches. In related news we had a scalable device for quantum information processing http://www.npl.co.uk/news/scalable-device-for-quantum-information-processing.

7. Google Glass-Inspired Real Time Speech Translation.
Will Powell hacked together a Goolge Glass-inspired system that enables real-time speech translation by displaying the translated speech as text in your glasses http://www.willpowell.co.uk/blog/. This provides a glimpse of what the rest of us will be able to do when we can get our hands on a decent system and developers have had a chance to bring their ideas to life - in this instance there should be no reason why you couldn’t link up a text-to-speech module to speak the words to you instead.

8. Creation of Magnetic Ratchet Memory.
Researchers have created a new type of computer memory dubbed “Rattle Memory” that entails the fabrication of magnetic domains on a nanowire in a ratchet architecture along which “bits” of magnetised areas can be accurately moved along http://www.fom.nl/live/english/news/archives/pressreleases2012/artikel.pag?objectnumber=197271. Although I wonder whether such a nanowire ratchet structure might have many other uses as a gear or cog in a future nanomachine. In related news we had the creation of a new type of semiconductor and the “Mott Transistor” that opens up a range of alternatives for computer processors and memory elements http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/semiconductors/devices/first-mott-transistor-offers-powerful-new-type-of-semiconductor.

9. On-Chip Lasers Implemented via Printed Photonic Crystal Mirrors.
The ultimate goal for developing low-profile lasers on chips is to make it cheaper and easier to integrate high-speed photonic data connections between microprocessor and other on-chip components and so get past one of the bottlenecks of computing development. These surface-emitting lasers http://www.news.wisc.edu/20895 that researchers developed are a big step in that direction.

10. Extreme Tissue Engineering: Building a “Jellyfish” from Rat Heart Cells.
In this fascinating experiment researchers build a Jellyfish shaped scaffold out of an elastic  polymer and grew a layer of rat heart muscle on it; when placed between two voltage-oscillating electrodes in water the rat-heart-muscle-embedded-jellyfish-shaped-polymer-thing actually swam like a real Jellyfish (the heart cells being triggered to contract by the electric field) http://www.nature.com/news/artificial-jellyfish-built-from-rat-cells-1.11046. Different people have different opinions on this sort of thing but I think it is wonderful demonstration of bioengineering and I particularly like this quote from the article: It is an engineer’s approach to basic science: prove that you have identified the right principles by building something with them.

Embodying A Thought Controlled Robot

This is a provocative experiment in remote virtual embodiment of a robotic body. Software interpreted the movement signals from the brain of a man being scanned by an fMRI. These signals were translated into a virtual avatar, linked over the internet to the robot. The man "saw" through the video stream from the robot, completing the feedback loop and providing him with a sense of being the robot.

"At one point the connection failed. One of the researchers picked the robot up to see what the problem was and I was like, 'Oi, put me down!'"

Some Overdue Re-shares.

Something I don't do enough of on Google+ is re-share cool content that I come across. My usage is patchy - I might go a day or two with no contact and then jump on the next and devour all the posts that I missed. Some of the cool content that I come across I'll share to a "Bookmarked Posts" circle with zero people in it and fully intend - every. single. time. - to come back to it and check it out and possibly finally re-share it. Thing is, months have passed now since I've started collecting bookmarks. And so, rather than spam you all with re-share after re-share I've collected a bunch of them here that might well be of interest to you. I'm sorry in advance if I've forgotten the re-sharers who I saw the content from.

How to beat the CAP theorem
This is a brilliant blog post on using immutable data, incremental writes (not updates), and a hybrid batch and realtime system to get the best of both worlds. Note the parallels to the components of Datomic. Long, but worth reading.
http://nathanmarz.com/blog/how-to-beat-the-cap-theorem.html

Event Sourcing
Martin Fowler's analysis of a pattern for treating state changes as a sequence of events. This pattern is a generalization of the core of the system discussed by Nathan Marz.

LMAX Architecture
Case study of an Event Sourcing business logic processor that can handle 6 million orders per second on a single thread.

Operational Transformations
I've been putting a lot of thought into a similar architecture using Node.js + Redis as a lightweight Transactor and a K/V store for storage. A friend (@crypticswarm, http://crypticswarm.com) has convinced me that Operational Transformations (probably with http://sharejs.org) are the best way to model the event stream. This fits quite nicely with the Event Sourcing pattern, and some optimizations for batching post-transformation snapshots to the storage layer would mirror the pattern described by Nathan Marz. Thoughts?

Have you applied similar patterns? Any interesting projects or additional reading to contribute?

Disorderly Programming for a Distributed World

How should we think about consistency in eventually consistent systems? How should we model coordination of asynchronous events? How can we pipeline data flows and decisions in a dynamic system with partial information without constantly depending upon impossible fictions of global completeness and correctness?

Peter Alvaro discusses key concepts for analyzing and understanding distributed systems, with better ways of thinking about ordering in systems that are fundamentally disordered.

Symmetry - συμμετρεῖν > measure together

When we look at a face we see symmetry but this is an illusion caused by the scale on which we view things and the lack of detail our eyes can pick up. The symmetry we see in our day to day lives is an approximation. If you were to zoom in on a complex object, let's say a face, there will always be flaws, a scar or even a stray molecule is enough to to break perfect symmetry.

Perfect symmetry is almost impossible to attain for complex objects but remarkably, there exists a realm of physics where simple symmetries in real objects cease to be approximations and become perfect. That is the domain of quantum physics, which for the most part is the physics of very small, very simple objects such as electrons, protons, light, and atoms.

Why is it that we find symmetry so attractive? Asymmetry can surprise you while symmetry offers you a nearly identical data set. Don't we like surprises? Perhaps the brain likes simplicity? If it anticipates symmetry, it doesn't need to process as much information, it can figure out what the right side of a face looks like even if it only gets to see the left side. Which is pretty amazing but also causes quite a bit of trouble when the revealed side of the face differs from our expectations...___

Self-bending Light Boomerangs: Drug Flashlights, Curvier Precision Surgery, 3D Projection, Invisible Display Visors

This is a fascinating breakthrough in fundamental optics knowledge. It's already being applied to precision carving of curved glass. Possible uses for surgery and drug delivery are mentioned. I also see potential applications to 3D projection, out-of-sight AR/VR personal display devices, and advances in practical invisibility cloaking with metamaterials.

I also see potential applications to 3D projection, out-of-sight AR/VR personal display devices, and advances in practical invisibility cloaking with metamaterials.

Bending Light

"Light normally travels in straight lines, but physicists have known for several years that superimposing a pattern on a laser beam can make it bend. The pattern is designed so that the individual light rays that make up the beam interfere with each other in a way that makes the beam curve."

Bending Light Like A Boomerang

"They calculated that it should be possible to make patterns that bend light beams by up to 180 degrees - an optical boomerang - without distorting them."

Drug Flashlights

"Segev says that his team hopes to use the technique to send beams in a complete circle and then to use the tiny light circles to manipulate nanoparticles. These could be loaded with drugs and then guided into the body. Laser beams are already used as optical traps to manipulate nanoparticles, but curvy beams could provide new control."

I presume that this means precision delivery, enabling treatments to be applied as closely as possible to targeted sites. This is probably only effective over short distances...for now.

I imagine DARPA getting a gleam in its eye, dreaming of precision laser delivery of non-lethal drugs projected into enemy eyes, entering the bloodstream right next to the brain and inducing immediate stupor. Computer: Don't shoot until you see their eyes. The black market innovation machine would rapidly follow up with popular consumer products.

3D Projection & Out-Of-Sight AR/VR Displays

The increased control over projected light opens up some amazing possibilities. Can we create curved surfaces that act as projection devices, with outer layers transporting the images to refract against inner layers that provide reflection, effectively creating 3D images? Imagine the "boomerang" shape as a bubble projected from the floor or ceiling, where the imagery can be displayed.

By extension, light from a projection device on the side of the head could curve around in front of the eyes, creating an invisible visor capable of projecting images directly into the eye. This would be a non-invasive AR/VR personal display device that would sit completely out-of-sight, with no field-of-view obstruction. In other words, Project Glass in the form factor of a bluetooth earpiece.

Invisibility Cloaking

Combine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metamaterial_cloaking and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunable_metamaterials and extreme light curving.

We're getting closer to that crazy Sci-Fi concept becoming a reality.___

Extropian Projections of Future Technology

For those who missed this the first time around.

AI, A-life, Methuselarity, GlobeNet, Global Superorganism, Memorex, Borg, Mirror World, Class I Energy, Universal Family Tree, Knowledge of All Species, TransHumanity, Singularity

The Next Transitions in Technology

What kinds of developmental thresholds would any planet of sentient beings pass through? The creation of writing would be a huge one. The unleashing of cheap non-biological energy is another. The invention of the scientific method is a giant leap. And the fine control of energy (as in electricity) for long-distant communications is significant as well, enabling all kinds of other achievements. Our civilization has passed through all these stages; what are some future transitions we can expect -- no matter the fashions and fads of the day? What are the emergent thresholds of information and energy organization that our civilization can look forward to? Most of these thresholds are gradual, so we can't assign dates, but each of these structures seem to be a natural transition that any civilization must reach sooner or later.

* AI - There are many varieties of artificial intelligence, and no formal definition for any of them. By whatever measure, a civilization capable of producing synthetic minds similar to its own, or superior in some facets, has reached an important threshold, not the least which is a great compounding acceleration of its progress.

* A-life -- Likewise there are many types of artificial life possible, from derivatives of natural biological life, to a-life running on an alternative chemical base-pairs, to self-reproducing dry life more akin to nano-bots. Sustainable self-reproducing, self-evolving creations enable huge innovations and bring huge problems. It is a major transition.

* Methuselarity - Health care and science keep extending the average longevity of humans, and increasing the rate at which it is improving. Right now science is extending the expected lifespan of humans in the developing world a few days per year. If this rate keeps accelerating, at some point scientific progress will increase expected longevity from one day per year, to one year per year. When longevity increases at one year per year, that effectively creates immortality, or Methuselarity, for anyone who reaches that threshold. They become like the biblical Methuselah and live for a thousand years, on average.

* GlobeNet -- Over time we keep adding sensors and monitors every few kilometers on land and on the sea until we form a dense grid of sensors covering the globe. There will be thermometers, wind speed jigs, rainfall meters, sunlight sensors, air pollution particle detectors, radiation meters, earthquake probes, climatic gas sensors, animal motion detectors, sea level and wave detectors, traffic sensors, DNA sensors, and little things that measure anything we can think of place on a regular basis on the surface (and deeper) of the planet. All of these form a blanket of sensitivity providing the planetary mind (us and machines) a real-time awareness. For the first time we'll have a quantifiable globe.

* Global Superorganism -- The stage at which several billion sentient beings spread over a planet and several quadrillion smart machines merge into a unified system that is always on. This global system of interacting smart agents exhibits emergent behavior and degrees of autonomy that is not present in its constituent parts. On some planets the global superorganism will reach artificial intelligence before a stand-alone AI does. It's not clear which way Earth is headed.

* Memorex -- Every bit of writing, music, photography, painting in civilization is digitized and recorded in a machine-readable way. All knowledge, in all languages, from all ages, in all media is stored in a way that is universally accessible to all people and machines. In other words, the universal library becomes real, but not just books, but everything created, past and present, and it is available anytime. This threshold of civilization-scale knowledge becomes both a global memory and a global awareness.

* Borg -- Another threshold is crossed when any individual can import the global Memorex onto their own minds. Civilization-scale memory available to, or within, all individuals.

* Mirror World -- A one-to-one mapping of both the natural and built worlds onto a full-scale simulation of those worlds. This huge global model runs in parallel to the observed worlds. At first the functions of large organizations are mirrored in a simulation, then entire cities will be reflected in a real-time city simulation. Eventually every major node, sensor-net, agent, or variable on Earth is simulated in real time in this global model. Sort of like Google Earth but with every process, and every ecosystem, as well as every building. The mirror world is used both as an experimental test bed for science and predictions, and as an entertainment medium, as in a second life.

* Class I Energy -- The Russian astronomer Nikolai Kardashev proposed three major levels of energy production for galactic civilizations, which he called Class I, II, and III. Class I was the maximization of energy from the entire planet, Class II was maximizing the available energy from its star, and Class III was exploiting energy from its galaxy. Humans have not yet reached Class I, so that threshold is still in front of us.

* Universal Family Tree -- Eventually we will sequence the full genomes of everyone living, and as many of the recent dead as we have access to. Together with genealogical records, this huge trove of data will give us our first universal family tree. Everyone living will have a place on it in relation to everyone else. We will clearly see exactly how I am related to you. We'll also see how everyone is related at some point to everyone else no matter where they were born. The big surprise will be the short hops between us. This common tree of descent will aid health care, medicine, and science, but will also aid peace. Greeks and Turks, Jews and Arabs, Koreans and Japanese will see they are far more related than not.

* Knowledge of All Species -- At some point a civilization wakes up and takes a comprehensive and systematic inventory of all the other living species on its planet. This step is similar to mapping all the elements of matter. It realizes that in order to model and manage its ecosystems it must know all the ingredients and all the interacting parts, just as it takes knowing all the elements in order to do chemistry. This threshold of the knowledge of all species includes sequencing the DNA of every species as well -- a huge asset that also enables it to recover and resurrect known extinct species.

* TransHumanity -- When beings gain control of their biological evolution they begin to mess with it. But not everyone will be eager to do so. At the point that humans begin to engineer their own genomes, there will be a significant number of individuals, families and groups who will refuse to do so. For every person who says "Over my dead body will I or my child be engineered," there will be someone else who says, "Bring on the mutants!" Thus there will inevitably be a forking of the gene line. The threshold is not engineering genes since we have been doing that slowly and ignorantly all along, but a clear splitting off of a subgroup. Whether or not each becomes a non-breeding separate species doesn't matter. Transhumanity means at least one fork of the species is deliberately self-engineered.

* Singularity -- As commonly defined, a singularity means an infinite pace of change. We don't know what that looks like because, as commonly defined, it is inherently unknowable. For this reason I don't find this transition useful in prospect, only in retrospect. We have been through one singularity so far -- the invention of language. A few of the above might be also initiate singularity but we'll only know after the fact.

There are a bunch of other transitions such as Downloadability, Time Travel, Telepathy, etc., -- well mined by science fiction -- that would qualify as important information/energy thresholds, but which do not seem inevitable to me at the moment.

Are there other near-future stages that you think any civilization on the galaxy must pass through if it survives long enough?___Extropian Projections of Future Technology

Experiments in Cybernetic Enhancement

Kevin Warwick and his students have been experimenting with nervous system implants to provide new senses, new forms of communication, and connection of the nervous system to the internet (with bi-direction synchronization with a remote robot). He is now taking small steps towards linking humans for brain-to-brain communication.

If that isn't enough, he's also building artificial organic brains with neuron arrays of 100,000 rat neurons, letting them connect organically. These are then being stacked, moving towards 30,000,000 connected neurons. Oh, and then they are introducing human neurons.

I love mad scientists.

Reaching Into Infinity: A Personal Manifesto

I believe in hacking the human experience of reality.

I believe that what is possible is only limited by our imagination.

I believe that our species has a responsibility to take conscious and deliberate control over its continued evolution.

I believe that science and technology can enable us to reprogram our biology, improve our neurology, transcend our humanity, and extend our reality beyond all physical constraints.

I believe in advancing these pursuits with ruthless optimism.

WHAT IF? An Ecosystem Perspective On Data Center Cooling

Because of the tremendous amount of heat generated in large data centers, cooling is a major "problem". It is expensive and it consumes a large amount of energy.

The experiments of Angelo Vermeulen suggest a new way of thinking about the "problem" by turning the heat into a resource in an ecosystem that creates a relationship between machines and biological life. Algae feeds on the heat and cools the system.

The rapid developments in biochemical circuits (http://goo.gl/DHF5V http://goo.gl/eK4Zr) and synthetic life APIs (http://goo.gl/TP9jP) suggest that practical biological computing is a near-future reality. In the design of these systems, perhaps we should be thinking about turning our "problems" into resources.

In an ecosystem, one creature's waste is another creature's food. With some creative thinking, many energy consumption and waste problems can be transformed into sources of energy.

An even more exciting possibility is a symbiotic relationship, closing the loop by providing energy back to the machines.___

Resurfacing: Projecting 3D Mappings

In an intriguing twist on the Kinect+projector AR experiments, this art project uses a sculpture to present the concept of 360° 3D mappings of a real world object to project an alternative surface back onto the object, mapped precisely to the geometry of the object.

In the digital world, this is commonplace; 3D objects essentially consist of a geometry combined with a surface/texture map. Bringing this digital technique into the real world through mapping+projection suggests novel ways of thinking about AR. It allows for a larger subset of digital imagery capabilities to be applied directly to the real world.

Projecting Onto Rigged Humans

Assume a person has been 3D scanned and rigged (see Footnote: Rigging) and sensors are in place for realtime 3D scanning. A fascinating consequence is the potential to project surfaces that remain accurately mapped to changing body positions. Sophisticated virtual costumes that can be changed instantly. (+Anna Scott, this idea may be of particular interest to you!)

A Hack For Projecting 3D Objects?

Extend this a bit further and we can enable the projection of some types of 3D objects, without requiring holographic projection. We simply need an object capable of some basic morphs that can be the target surface of the projections. Imagine sections of cloth with "joints" created by small metal poles that can be pulled in or pushed out to create different kinds of surface deformations, connected to a central mechanical device. This little robot could be remotely synchronized to the required skeleton. Crude...but possibly effective?

Thoughts?

[Footnote: Rigging - 3D animation involves a skeleton model of interconnected movable parts, describing the "bones" and the "joints". This rigging enables doing things like mapping from the realistic model of a person to a character model, so that an actor's movements can be translated to a CGI character that may have different proportions, or radically different construction. By mapping the joints in a human face model to a bird's, for example, the person's facial movements can be reflected, enabling the bird to "talk" with its beak in an animation that is thereby auto-mapped to the actor's.]

This is a marketing video, but there's good content. It describes many of the design principles that Polycom has applied to smartly designing a telepresence system for "face-to-face" meetings. These are issues that must be addressed in any future telepresence application.

"Opening the valve that limits consciousness forces utterance, almost as if the word is a concretion of meaning previously felt but left unarticulated. Language is an ecstatic activity of signification. Through the act of speaking vividly, we enter into a flirtation with the domain of the imagination. The fluency, the ease, the aptness of expression one becomes capable of are such that one is astounded by the words that issue forth . . . For the inspired one, it is as if existence were uttering itself through him." - Terrance McKenna

"He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me." - Thomas Jefferson (?)

“Disease, poverty, environmental destruction, unnecessary suffering of all kinds: these are things that a superintelligence equipped with advanced nanotechnology would be capable of eliminating.” - Nick Bostrom

“What can be asserted without evidence, may be dismissed without evidence.” - Christopher Hitichens

‘Don’t you believe in anything?’
‘Yes,’ I said. ‘I believe in evidence. I believe in observation, measurement, and reasoning, confirmed by independent observers. I’ll believe anything, no matter how wild and ridiculous, if there is evidence for it. The wilder and more ridiculous something is, however, the firmer and more solid the evidence will have to be.” - Isaac Asimov

"Kurzweil takes things that everyone agrees on and principles for extrapolation that everyone agrees on and makes predictions that no one agrees with." - Neil Gershenfeld

"Most people mistake the limits of their imagination for the limits of possibility." - Eliezer Yudkowski

"Science is the greatest achievement of human history so far; the world-transforming power of science and the tremendous insights that we've gained show that this is an enterprise, a wonderful collective enterprise, that is a great achievement of humanity." - A.C. Grayling
