"The European Union could soon consider a proposal that would give law enforcement the ability to engage in offensive hacking, i.e., compromise private infrastructure and systems to gather information via spyware, delete data or even take servers offline completely when there is probable cause to suspect cybercriminal activity." ...this is, worrying.

Both the shield hardware and +Arduino software to manage it, will all be open sourced. However if you don't want to wait, or you're not comfortable soldering SMD components. The hardware we deployed at +Google I/O as part of the +Data Sensing Lab is now available to pre-order at http://datasensinglab.com/dslstore/.

During today's #io13 talk we announced that Android API version 18 (which will be landing in a few short months) will have developer APIs for Bluetooth Low Energy and AVRCP 1.3.
The video of the talk should be posted soon, so you can see a preview of the APIs we shared.

...finally #VentureBeat also picked up the +Data Sensing Lab story at +Google I/O. Again focusing on a, at least in my opinion, non-existant privacy issue. Not everything to do with sensors is a privacy issue.

...so +TechCrunch picked up the presence of the +Data Sensing Lab at +Google I/O. I think they're hammering on the privacy angle a bit hard. The mesh is an environmental sensor network, there really is no privacy implications here, it's all aggregate data with no personal information involved.

Drone Dudes are a team of filmmakers and designers who use RC copters to capture stunning aerial cinematography. On the MAKE blog we interview Andrew Petersen and Jeff Blank, who operate a radial octocopter capable of lifting rigs up to 12lbs. on a 2- or 3-axis gimbal. All the gear stows away inside their Transit Connect, which doubles as a camping vehicle when they are on the road.

A test version of NASA's Orion spacecraft landed safely during a simulation of two types of parachute failures. In the test, conducted in Yuma, Ariz. on May 1, a mock Orion capsule was traveling about 250 mph when the parachutes were deployed - the highest speed in the test series.
The first test of the parachutes after traveling in space will be during Exploration Flight Test-1 in 2014, when an uncrewed Orion will be returned from 3,600 miles above Earth's surface.
Check out initial video of the test. We'll post additional video as it comes in: http://youtu.be/lSGZo2vDbQk

The thing that confuses me about the +Project Glass interface is that "things to the left are happening now or coming up" and "things to the right are from the past." Surely it's more intuitive that the future events are on the right? We read left-to-right after all? Or is this just me..?
Update: +Vishnu Suresh explains it this way, "Could be because it is over the right eye.. past contents are 'flowing back' towards the back of your head through the remaining part of the device hooked over the right ear." Which makes total sense to me. Glad to have that cleared up.

A long post, from +Jay Freeman (aka #saurik) explaining his motivations, and taking a deep dive into the technical details of the exploit he used to jailbreak +Project Glass, along with his advise that you should leave your boot loader locked, "...while your device has an unlocked bootloader, you have no way to be confident that your operating system hasn't been modified by someone while outside of your control. This is because anyone can, after booting your bootloader-unlocked Android device into fastboot, boot or flash any custom image they want." .
Jay also warns that, "...sadly, due to the way Glass is currently designed, it is particularly susceptible to the kinds of security issues that tend to plague Android devices."

Here in the UK the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act has just passed. Previously ownership of your own published work was automatic, this is no longer the case, "...the Act contains changes to UK copyright law which permit the commercial exploitation of images where information identifying the owner is missing, so-called "orphan works", by placing the work into what's known as "extended collective licensing" schemes. Since most digital images on the internet today are orphans - the metadata is missing or has been stripped by a large organisation - millions of photographs and illustrations are swept into such schemes..."

Predictable perhaps but +Jay Freeman (aka saurik) has done what he does. His #ifihadglass would be to jailbreak and modify the software, and as +Google actually sold him one, he's done just that.
Apparently +Project Glass runs +Android 4.0.4 which is apparently vulnerable to the adb restore race condition. The attached picture shows what he did with that...
