Daily Doodle. 10 Minute portrait demo from my painting class (18 x 24 inches). This drawing was done with a number 2 pencil. I LOVE LOVE LOVE teaching painting. I love making it simple for students. They found a lot of success today!

Life has been insanely busy...two-floor home renovation, moving, GETTING MARRIED, a honeymoon, learning to live with my wonderful bride (end of the bachelor version of house cleaning)... that and a full time job, hobbies, etc. I am not complaining... but it sure hasn't left me ANY time for the thriving Google+. I think we have turned the corner though... free time is here again!

Time to get back in the action. Here is a photo from our Wedding/Honeymoon/Beach shoot (I love my wife so much!):

Something for the art-makers out there: People always ask me for tips at drawing faces. This post may provide a small insight into that special visual problem. The image here is taken from a small study I did this morning. This detail shot is an in-progress image. I intentionally cropped the artwork to show the painting existing at three levels of finish simultaneously. Number "1" is a face as it looks when I am simply "roughing in" the sketch. Number "2" is what my faces look like when I begin to more clearly define the lights, darks, and proportion. Number "3" is a representation of a near finished/polished stage of the painting. The important thing to note is that in all cases, the work is about seeing and representing "value" - value is the artist word for light and dark. Light and dark will create the illusion of form. Last week I married my beautiful wife! We recorded the moment right here, on a Google Hangout! So fun. Just wanted to wish you all a lovely weekend wherever you may be. Best wishes and thank you for all the support and comments here. Google Plus has revolutionized the web for me. I an encouraged to see its continued development through refinement and added features.

This picture is based on a referencial photoshoot I made with Jenna Stewart, originaly for the poster and cover-art of an upcoming movie. For some reasons, the project got canceled, letting me free to use the picture for my own wills and inspiration. Here is the result !

Quickly, all you need to know is that the "cool" thing about this camera is that it has all real-time Live filters and effects, in addition to real-time edge detection and live sharpening.  You can also use your fingers to adjust the intensity of the effect, move around lens flares, etc etc... it's cool!

What is your favorite rule, and when do you choose to break it?

Once you learn the "rules" of photography (or art in general) I feel one should really work on breaking them when appropriate.  Things like the "rule of thirds", model posing, lighting and other such guidelines were invented to teach, but not to limit.  

If you don't know things like cropping above/below major joints, you can make some ugly decisions that can weaken or ruin your work.  However, once you know and understand why the guideline was created, you can/should feel free to break out and explore.  This image is a great example of breaking a bunch of rules, but in the end the work is better for the experience, at least in my opinion.
