Microscopic crystal 'flowers' build themselves in a Harvard lab
Imagine peering into a microscope and finding yourself in a garden.
That's the case at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where researchers have found a way to shape microscopic crystals into complex and often beautiful structures.
Inspired by coral reefs, seashells and other naturally occurring complex mineral structures, postdoctoral fellow Wim L. Noorduin and Harvard colleagues have been researching ways to create similar designs.
These "flowers" were created by mixing barium chloride and sodium silicate, also known as waterglass, in a beaker of water. The resulting reaction combines with carbon dioxide in the air to create crystals made of barium carbonate in the water.
Noorduin found that as the crystals self-assembled, he could control their shape, size and... more »

Young Americans Lead Trend to Less Driving
For six decades, Americans have tended to drive more every year. But in the middle of the last decade, the number of miles driven — both over all and per capita — began to drop, notes a report to be published on Tuesday by U.S. Pirg, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

SKA Brewing Vinifera Stout
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/923/88467/
I love Modus and most everything I've had from SKA, so was happy to find this gem in my Arizona Care package from +Ricky Potts .
This limited (apparently brewed only once) export style stout is brewed with malbec lees, which give it a unique twist. I got a lot more of the typical dark bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts and a bit of coffee than the vinous notes I was expecting. Possibly the grape would have come out more when it was super fresh. But a nice stout, Big but not Overpowering. Good flavors with a fair amount going on. Well done.

Sonoran Brewing Beer for Brains Porter

Again, scored a nice beer from +Ricky Potts which I would never find in my neck of the woods. This beer was brewed for the http://www.thebeerforbrainsfoundation.org/ Beer For Brains Foundation, a national, non-profit organization of craft-beer lovers, distributors and brewers, who are committed to:
* Raising public awareness about brain cancer
* Engendering compassion for its victims and
* Helping fund groundbreaking research leading to a cure..
This beer goes out to my Dad, +James Davis , who is battling a gnarly inoperable glioblastoma right now. I wish I could have shared this nice beer with him. I love you, Man!!
This is a mildly roasty porter with a rhubarb tartness, which almost gives it a litle of a sour tinge. Fluffy car... more »

Firestone Walker Double Jack DIPA
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2210/50697/
First time ever having a FW beer, thanks to +Ricky Potts for hooking me up with this via trade.
This is a top shelf DIPA. Citrus and Grapefruit explosion on the nose and a very piny resicous palate. Although it's 100 IBU's it's not a palate wrecker or enjoy by, as the hops are well balanced with a very nice crystal malt spine.
Well put together and a world class left coast DIPA.

If you wonder why you've never seen a photograph of a US Marine carrying an umbrella - Marine Corps regulation MCO P1020.34F of the Marine Corps Uniform Regulations chapter 3 states that "a male Marine is not allowed to carry an umbrella while in uniform." Not even the President of the United States can request a Marine to carry an umbrella without the express consent of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, according the Marine Corps Manual.

How brave Children walk to School around the World
It is easy to believe that we have it hard when the alarm rings for work or school early in the morning each day. But as these pictures show, it's worth a lot to have a normal and safe way to our daily activities...
Tim Costello, CEO of World Vision says: "Every day, around the world, we're seeing the power of education to transform communities. For instance, girls who spend seven years in school marry on average four years later and have 2.2 fewer children. An extra year of primary school boosts girls’ eventual wages by 10 to 20 per cent. An extra year of secondary school boosts wages by 15 to 25 per cent. Every time these children make such journeys to school, they don't benefit just themselves, but their entire communities." → goo.gl/3z93R

Hangouts video chat blocked by AT&T
Oh, AT&T... If you're on AT&T's network and trying to use Hangouts video chat, you're probably experiencing issues. This isn’t the first time that AT&T has blocked video chat apps from working properly on its network, iPhone users may remember that FaceTime had issues when it first launched. Oddly enough, AT&T isn't blocking Hangout video calls on iPhones this time around, just Android.
Looks like +T-Mobile is a viable option, once again. (Hangouts work fine on Verizon for what it's worthy).
