I am currently arguing on Twitter with someone about why Google is not necessarily evil for ditching XMPP with Hangouts. It sucks for me as a user but anyone looking at the bigger picture would accept that Google is doing it for a valid reason and that reason is market conditions. No one wants interoperability on instant messenger. Why should Google be the only one?

Opera seems to have messed up big time. They are replacing Opera Mobile (Presto) with Opera Mobile (WebKit) and they seem to have removed support for a lot of basic phones that ran the Presto edition and the beta as well. 

I think they should have retained Opera Mobile (Presto) for a few months (if not years) because it still is a very fine browser and worked well on low spec devices.
