Do we need a distributed social web?

Whole load of interconnected computers, whole load of interconnected websites, people browsing content solely on websites, bouncing from one website to another. Bloggers actively linking between each. Less people created content than were consuming content. No single point of failure. The mesh of connected computers allowed search engines to come along and swallow content by following the links between sites.

Currently the social web is controlled by a couple of sites,LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and now Google+. They have provided single points of contact where huge congregations of community share resources, thoughts and feelings. You push people in one end, combine with... more »

Be evil

+Gideon Rosenblatt pointed to an article today about the Facebook's and Twitter's "Don't be evil" plugin that manipulates the Google's search results. I was wondering, why isn't Facebook showing Google+ results if they are such an open social network? Not to mention Google+ results are easy accessible via their API.

Well decided to make a "Be evil" plugin. If you install the plugin from the link below (download => install to Chrome), Facebook will show at least link to Google+ results. :-)

To close the apparent gender gap, women really need to stop putting themselves in the very boxes they so desperately want to avoid. I've spotted no end of crap spewed from female writers in the tech sector recently with the word "Women" in the title.

Where I'm from there are specialist 'Women in Business' coffee mornings , and 'Women Together workshops' which are self congratulatory, slap in the back affairs where women network solely with each other. Just recently I've discovered there's a sole dedicated 'TED event for Women' WTF.

It's bullshit.

Either you are in business, or you aren't. Sex is irrelevant. You don't find men huddled together holding hands with each other, they do business with both sexes and get on with it. If there's a business deal worth doing, a true businessman doesn't care... more »

Feedburner is good product. I wish it was given the resources it needs to be a great one. Right now it feels like an abandoned child left in the corner as just a vehicle for Adsense. For example, where's the advanced tracking on subscriptions out of the box? Right now you have to roll your own, but it should be trivial to see pages and keywords which converted to subscribers right from within Feedburner.

Where's the Google Plus integration? Brands can't link their Google+ pages to Feedburner, and you can't +1 posts from your email.

Doesn't make any sense to me.

Games are becoming more and more important in the overall race for an engaged audience on the social web. Look what Farmville has done for Facebook, and the speed of gaming introduction inside Google+. The release of Angry Birds on Chrome was a power play. Xbox game Bastion has been ported to Chrome using the new Native Client technology and WebGL, and just recently we've seen Joystick support for both Chrome and Firefox.

There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, games are commonly a social experience (if they are two players or more) - , and secondly, he who creates the most entertaining experience on the web drives the most traffic, and thus adoption of a particular platform. This is insane!

Amazing pictures from Switzerland show where "jetman" Yves Rossy gave this incredible flying display, using a tailor-made jet pack. The aviation enthusiast leapt from a helicopter and performed a series of aerial acrobatics above the Alps. He then joined two jet planes in a synchronized flight. To synchronise their flight paths the jets reduced their speed to 220 kilometres per hour (137 miles per hour), which put their engines at a point close to stalling. Rossy's previous aerial feats include flying the English Channel and looping the loop around a hot-air balloon.

Google+ is not a microblogging platform, nor is it a macro-blogging platform. It meets somewhere in the middle where long form content and short can happily co-exist.

For me Google+ is not Facebook, nor is it Twitter. It is an eco-system and platform in its own right. For me, it most closely matches the same sharing structure as Tumblr, with the people most closely matching those I follow on Twitter. Commonly they aren't the people I have met in real life, however with the advantage of more than 140 characters, it gives me the flexibility to express written thoughts and ideas without constraint to that audience.

I turn to Twitter when I want to see whats happening where, and for breaking news. It's an micro information platform.

Google have quietly introduced a new feature for telling visitors their IP addresses. Anyone who now types queries such as "What is my IP" or "IP address" will now be presented immediately with the answer, above any of the services which currently offer to do the same. Whilst on the face of it, this may not seem like a big deal, it's another perfect example of Google moving to answer the query themselves, rather than directing traffic to relevant sites.
