Lotus Carroll1,775,055This is the Event for our September 2013 Self Portrait Challenge: A Great Cell Phone Photo. Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait using only a cell phone to capture and process (no computer software post processing!). Your photo must have been captured this month. I struggle to understand.

How some fucking "people" (I use that term loosely) deem that they have some sort of right or justification to kill others?

Faith? Creed? Colour? It's a long list they use, they will pigeonhole you with a label they don't like and within a belief structure they have they will convince themselves and others, that under that structure, they are free to kill at will.

It's not a new problem, it has been part of the human make up for centuries but for a species that is supposedly advanced we not only never learn from past experiences but revert to type time and time again. We just find more efficient ways to do it.

To those who carried out the attacks in Paris and many other atrocities over the recent years, you fuckers have lost any right to be classed as human anymore. You fuckers are now a species all of your own. I... more »

Sometimes just that little touch, that little acknowledgement, that closeness. When just being there is enough.

Sometimes We Get Lucky.

One of the things I have learnt with wildlife photography is it takes as much luck as it does skill. Animals do not understand the need to pose for the camera, they have their own environment and their own way of doing things and they really don't care if you want to take their image or not.

Take this peregrine falcon, it was simply a case of taking images as it sat and watched what was going on, eventually it held a pose that I liked and it was a case of hitting the shutter button. More luck than skill.

Moments Of Clarity

Where do you get yours?
That moment when everything comes into focus, everything suddenly has a purpose, a reason. Sometimes its when you least expect it, others when you do. Such as that one moment the sun breeches the clouds and hits a standing stone on Castlerig Stone Circle. I wonder over the many centuries how many others have stood and witnessed the same, felt the same?

The Promises Of Life.

The sun will rise, the sun will set, the rains will fall, the droughts will come, the people will be born, the people will die, the mountains will stand fast, the rivers will flow, the air will be warm and fade to cold.

Life goes on, this is the only promises it can make, don't spend time staring at the ugly, it will make for an ugly mind, spend time staring at the beautiful for that is what we are capable of. This planet earth might be one of a kind within a billion other universes, we may well be alone but she gives you more than she will ever ask for.

What You Think You Know!

The internet is far removed from reality, the cyber world is just that, another world. It's a place you are able to shape and form an alternative of yourself. You show who you want to be rather than who you really are. We all weave a web to cocoon ourselves from a reality and portray what we think we feel others should know.

We all do it, it's a self preservation system we have built in, more utilise this self preservation than others. It's to protect our private inner sanctity so we surround ourselves with half truths as a shield.

So we think we know, we believe we know who is there on the other side of the keyboard based on what they let us know about them. It's only by taking down the shields of half truths do we liberate ourselves form the constraints we place on ourselves.

So we think we know, we believe we know who is there on the other side of the keyboard based on what they let us know about them. It's only by taking down the shields of half truths do we liberate ourselves form the constraints we place on ourselves.

I know people's thoughts about me, I know I hear things such as "compassionate" "caring" but I show you that side. The other side you do not see, only those close to me know me for real, my wife Jude knows what it is like to live with a man with mental health issues, how bipolar controls my moods and has to be counter-controlled by medication. Without it I am talked down of bridges or out of a siege. I'm not easy to live with, I know that and it takes a special someone to handle me. I know that but you don't because I have only one real layer I show you. The deeper hidden layers I don't portray here, the dark days where the black dog hunts me down and I turn back on it snarling back, when anger reaches a crisis point during a manic stage. Those you don't see, I chose not to show you, afraid they are shown as a sign of weakness, I'm mentally unstable but I'm not the only one. One in four people suffer, one in four families suffer along with them. So many hide in the shadows too afraid to come out, too afraid to be stigmatised.

Walk out from the shadows and liberate yourself. Take the help that is there, reclaim your life from the black dog and find comfort in those that love you and willing to help.___

You fuckers are now a species all of your own. I cannot even call you part of the animal kingdom as that is an injustice to animals as a whole. You are nothing more than bipedal parasites and like any other parasite you need to wiped from the earth.

You may be celebrating your actions now but I think you forget that the world WILL react. There has always been a reticence to get too deeply involved in the past, do you believe that by your actions to have enforced that reticence? No, you have enforced a desire to ensure every single one of you are hunted down and destroyed like the vermin you are.

Then you will rot in the hell of your own making.___

The Autumn Photographer

There is an old saying, you can't see the woods for the trees!
When out taking landscape images we are always looking for that one big wow image, the picture that has it all, the sunset, the sunrise like no other, the trees deep in the colours of autumn, the cascading water over a fall.

In doing so we forget that the littlest things are right under our noses, or in this case our feet, it's just a field I walked through carpeted with autumnal leaves, its simple but it's the memory it evokes for me.

Hello Insomnia My Old Friend

I have been awake since 2 in the morning, lying in bed looking at the ceiling in the dark. At 4 I gave up and thought I would get up and do something so I am sat at the PC, cup of coffee listening to the rain hit the conservatory roof.

When my mind is in this state, neither awake nor asleep I tend to want to edit images and it's also the time I enjoy it the most. My mind is wandering between reality and dreams, I let it wander and see what it does, I suppose you could call it subconscious editing. I enjoy this though, there is a freedom in allowing a half dream state to take over and seeing where it takes you.

Wasting Time

Probably the best thing you can do with your time is to waste it. We spend so much of our lives scurrying around being productive, using our time wisely, getting things done.

We forget we need to take time out, to smell the air, feel the breeze on our skin, listen to the morning chorus and watch the sun slowly set.

Will you remember all those spreadsheets you accomplished, all those targets you hit and the money you made when you are old? Or will you remember sitting on a dock by a lake watching the sun go down?

Waste as much time as you can.

To dislike someone based on who they are could mean they are an arsehole.

To dislike someone based on colour, creed, faith, sexual orientation or circumstances will make you the arsehole.

Purple And Black

I'm fairly sure if you ask Brooke what her favourite colour is it would be easy to figure out.

I met her while out in Liverpool and as I always tell everyone, if a person stands out in a crowd they will stand out in a portrait and Brooke certainly does.

She is Australian but is living in the UK at present.

BTW, yes her eyes are purple too!

Lion Of Autumn

Iblis has grown to become one of my favourite big cats, he has a character all of his own, he likes to let you know he is around at times when he fills the whole place with his roar.
This has got to be my favourite image of him to date.

I'll Keep You Safe

And watch over you as you sleep
Guarding you from harm
From the fear and demons
For I am your shield
And your protector.

I loved the way the male snow leopard kept an eye on its surrounding as the female slept.

Fate whispers to the warrior

"You cannot withstand the storm"

And the warrior whispers back

"I am the storm"

Sometimes our minds and souls go to sleep lulled into a sense of just being, existing, getting through each day. We need something to rekindle that fire we let go out, to put the beat back into our hearts so as to live again. These chances to restart are within each and everyone one of us, it just takes courage to be the warrior that can take it on. To have the soul to once again to be alive.

I am no longer afraid of the storm, I am the storm.

Listen To The Ancients

There is more to history than old buildings and museums. There is a history in every land that has been laid down by the ancients, put there for a reason, to tell the future something. A story we have not yet been able to decipher but holds our attention.

This is Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District UK, they say it was raised some 3000 years BC, to look to the mountains of Hellvelyn and High Seat that you can see the sun set behind. Its a place of great mystery to me.

Come Spread Your Wings

Be free from the gravity that holds you down
Search within the skies that holds your dreams
Let the air feed your heart so as to keep you in flight
Let your desires feed your soul so as to keep you alive.

My world at times is wrapped up in what beauty there is out there, I can and do get lost at times when photographing animals as they hold so much deep within me. You make connections if only you are willing to look, to see, to believe.

Weaveworld Of Seasons

As colours are recast in hues of reds and golds.
As days shorten to embrace the chill in the air
Within this weaveworld of autumn we wander
As the land slowly drifts into slumber we ready ourselves
For we are no more than seasons of life ourselves
Passages of time reflect the mortal coil within our souls
We are the pattern within the weaveworld
The silken thread of life and death

If I Ask?

The sun to set in colours of gold will it keep me warm?
The clouds to float in skies of blue will they give me shade?
The rivers and lakes to ripple a song for me to hear?
The beat of my heart to keep rhythm with my world?
My soul to hold the times most gentle in memories to recall?

If I ask will this become?

Behind The Beauty
Can belie a fierceness never before known.
When a big cat holds your gaze it can see straight through you, deep within your being, if you have the courage to hold that contact then you are allowed, for the briefest of moments, to know just how power they possess behind their beauty. Snow leopards are without doubt creatures that evoke spirits of our history, of the land, of beauty behind the eyes.
I believe and always have that big cats are spiritual creatures that will show you a deeper meaning to yourself, if you chose to take their path you will gain so much, if you don't they will simply tolerate you.

Solitude.
Its that moment between inhaling and exhaling, for that miniscule amount of time the world stops, your soul caresses your heart and being alone is a place you just need to be. Nothing but the sound of your breath and the beating of your heart, all thoughts slow to a standstill and clarity is your mirror, reflecting back what you fail to see.

Find your place where solitude can be your guide.

How Would Our Day End

Speaking of sunsets and the human race
Of dreams we've had and dreams to come
As the sound of water sings its song
With the gentle breeze to add its harmony

As the sun whispers goodnight
And wraps us all in a blanket of warmth
The birds call out on one last flight
This is how our day would  end

Derwent Water in the Lake District, a land created by the gods themselves.

Playing The Old Fashioned Way

It was joyous tinged with a little sadness yesterday when on our way down to photograph the sunset at Derwent Water we came across a bunch of kids playing football and having a great time. Its just something we don't see too much of anymore, children play football but alas it tends to be on the latest gaming console.

Being old I remember making street carts out of old bits of woods and the wheels of a pram, building dens wherever we could and having your gang hang out in them. Going for bike rides that would last for hours on end and the only rule you had to abide by was be home when the street lights come on.

Glow.
Waiting in a field for the sun to rise has its benefits, not only do you take yourself away from the rest of the world you get to watch as it wakes up. I noticed the country lane on the left of me start to have some traffic use it. I set my camera up on a slow shutter speed and waited for a car to pass. As one did I managed to get its headlights streaming through the bushes. It adds a whole new dimension to what would be a normal sunrise.

Frozen Fear

Night has claimed me
Wrapped in darkness
Clothed in fear
Static my bones
To move no more
Daybreak only brings the cold
No relief from fear
Frozen
Unseen
Death the last refuge.

I thought this image would be apt for halloween.

"Quoth the Raven Nevermore.

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted—nevermore!"

I love ravens and the works of Edgar Allan Poe, this though combines both. The darkness of the poem reflects the darkness of the raven itself, its only when you get close do you see the iridescence within the plumage of the feathers. The way they glisten and gleam as the light dances across them, the same light and iridescence reflecting back through the dark depthless eyes.

Being Different Makes The Difference.

I have always said if someone stands out in a crowd they will stand out in a portrait. This young lady was a stallholder at the Viking fair I went to today and I accosted her for her image. It was simply down to her tattoos and more so the one she had on her brow. I normally do not like facial/head tattoos but these and her other tattoos were very delicate so they really suited her.

We Are All Cosmic Dust.

They say we are all made from the same atoms as the stars. There is never a void of all the atoms that exist within the universe. Each of us is interconnected not with only each other and other living creatures but every other thing that is created by atoms, in other words, everything. If there is never a void of all the atoms in the universe does that mean when we pass we simply become cosmic dust along with everything else?
