There is only one valuable thing in art: the thing you cannot explain.
— Georges Braque

(I thought the last quote I posted was rather funny; this one is much more serious, if a bit mystical).

What I've been up to

Sadly, not painting.  The creating a neighborhood website project was followed by the cleaning out the attic project (in anticipation of finishing the remodeling the attic project), which was followed by the cleaning out the garage project, and then the cleaning out the storage room project!

Next up, I must take photos of furniture and other stuff we need to sell and get those posted online.  After which, I can move all the crap out of my studio, so I can get in there and paint!  Sheesh!  What a lot of un-fun work I've been up to lately!

Here are about 80 of my early to not-too-recent paintings stacked outside while in the clearing out process.  I'm keeping these, or finally possibly selling them, should anyone want one.  However, they'll probably never be seen again by anyone but my husband and me.  Should have offeredthem fo... more »

Found an Old Color Chart

I've been cleaning up the garage and storage room the past few days (!), and tonight I found this old color chart of pastels in the storage room.  Apparently, I wasn't the first one to find it.  Must get that room sheetrocked or something!  :(

Me at 19?

Another old photo recently discovered; I think I was 19 or 20 at the time, or maybe 18.  I recognize the location, White Rock Lake; my boyfriend of that time took the picture.  We had a sort of on-again, off-again kind of relationship.  He rented a house on the lake later in our relationship, so that's why I think it was later.  FWIW, which ain't much.  ;)

Three More Sketches from My Attic Discovery

Oh, I'm so glad I found these; I really was wondering what happened to the first one, which was a colored pencil study for a color woodcut that I never made.  The second sketch was an ink study for a single-color (B/W) woodcut that I did make, which came out well.  The third image was just an ink sketch of an in-progress painting in my tiny studio setup in the tiny house I shared with a roommate in 1988.  I did complete two paintings like that in the sketch -- very colorful ones.  :)

A Few More Scribbles and Sketches

It's been so long since I packed these away, I forgot that I'd ever drawn them.

There's nothing spectacular to be seen here, which is probably why I'd never made digital images of these before.  The bedroom curtain scene was clearly left unfinished, but I am rather fond of the kitchen scene - I still have the covered cheese board, copper pepper mill, copper double boiler, and Romertopf clay cooker, and they all still get lots of use!

More Old Sketches Found in the Attic

I'm adding these three on Caturday, but they were all done necessarily quickly, many years ago.  I've been searching for the first one for years!

A Few More Very Early Sketches

More from my attic discovery...these remind me that when I was first learning to draw, I hadn't yet begun to understand the idea of telling a better story, visually, by leaving out unneeded detail.  That stone house - oy!  Not great, a suggestion of stonework strongly drawn in places would have been so much better.

Of course, this was during my first drawing class, in the hot Austin summer, so perhaps I can be forgiven for being a bit heat-addled.

Window Seat/Daybed Design

Trying to work out how this will be built.  It's a bit of a wonky space with a/c ducts and some wiring that needs covering up by the window seat (but we also need to retain access to those).

Not sure yet about the off-center placement of the window seat part, in relation to the centered window, but for practical reasons, it seems to make the most sense.

A twin size futon mattress will fit perfectly on the seat part; fabric for pillows has yet to be picked out. Definitely want the Ikea lamp and rolling table/cart thingy that looks like it just landed from another planet - a mere $100 for both.

It will be great to have a library and reading space all together there.  Still several weeks away.

First pic - my sketch with photos of accessories added;
Second pic - a schmancier model of the basic idea.

Found Sketches from Way Back

In one of the 26 boxes stored in the attic that contained previously unknown content -- boxes that I just sorted through -- I found 18 sketches from my early college art classes.  I've been searching for some of these for years, though I'd forgotten about some of the others.  I'm so happy to have found these!

Here are 3 of them from my first drawing class after returning to school to study art:

Treasures in the Attic

One of the attic boxes I just sorted through contained a lot of old photos, including this picture of me in my first car, a 1961 Bug-eyed Sprite (Austin-Healey).  I was probably 16 or 17 in this picture.  :)

I loved this little car, with it's pull-button starter and 1/16" thick doors, slide-on plexiglas windows, and soft-top.  I supported it for 3 years, even had a bigger engine put in it and had it painted purple.  Got it up to 95 mph once, but got too scared to go any faster, as it was kind of shaky at that speed.

I can't remember all the things that broke on this little darlin', but among the most memorable were the time the wiring harness went up in smoke and flames as I was driving my boyfriend to lunch; another time the axle broke and the car wouldn't go no more; and one night, the generator stoppedgener... more »

Our Soon-to-be-New(-ish) Attic Room

A project started 7 years ago that I hope will be completed this year.  Next week, the black and white checkerboard flooring will start to go in, after a bit more delay.

I'm drawing out plans for building bookshelves later this year, and a daybed/window seat before that.  Here's about half of the bookshelves, imagined.  Maybe not quite to scale, but close.  :D

Wonderful Photo of a Wonderful Painter

The painter is Austin's Ian Shults; the photo is by local photographer Scott David Gordon.

I visited Ian in his studio a few years ago; love his unique perspective!  He's got a show up now at Wally Workman's, one of the better remaining local galleries: http://www.wallyworkmangallery.com/

Hope to get in there and see the show soon.

And I am really enjoying Scott David Gordon's 365 project of panaramic photos from around Austin, including quite a few of artists and musicians.  Some really great photos!

"Enchanted Rock" print - SOLD

Sold my last remaining matted print of this painting of Enchanted Rock, from my early representational days of painting.  I still have 2 unmatted small prints left, and I imagine those will sell eventually, too.

This has been my most popular image for selling prints. And I still have the original.  :)

I am considering whether I will resume printing giclees of any of my work, as my office space is likely to be completed within the month, and I'll have access to my good printer again.

If I choose to make any more of my images available as prints, I prefer printing them in small editions only on good fine art paper, and signing and numbering them, rather than offering unlimited, unsigned prints that can be printed on any old kind of surface through any online printing shops.  I really can't imagine anyof m... more »

I've Lost my Driving Calluses

I haven't had to drive too much since I quit my last out-of-the-home job in 2005.  Today I had to drive to a client's across town, which I still do every few months.  I know, I know -- I am very lucky to be able to work mostly from home.

Austin folks, just so you know, Friday's rush hour started before 2pm today.  Not sure when I've seen so many maniacs and idiots in one 45-minute drive (normally 20 minutes).

My favorite today was an impatient SUV driver behind a car being towed down a residential street in our hood, a street with quite a few speed bumps, and so there were lots of slow-downs.  This clever driver decided to pass the car being towed and the truck towing it on the left on the hilly 2-lane street, just as another car turned onto the street heading straight for the SUV.  Much hilarity ensued as thetwo o... more »

Cleaning Out the Attic; Discovered Ampu-Balm

I've been busy the past 5 days getting the attic ready for the 3rd (and hopefully final) phase of remodeling, which we started 7 years ago, and continued 3 years ago.  During this round, we'll have a roll of flooring installed in the to-be-finished half of the attic, and a window seat built, and then I'll have a bunch more stuff to do.  And then soon, maybe in a  month, we'll be done!  :D.

I'm sorting through about 25 boxes of unknown stuff that I've piled in the middle of where the flooring needs to go, and I have to be done clearing that space before 11am tomorrow.  Filling huge bags with trash...

By box #5 or 6, I was surprised to discover stuff from my father's house that I have never seen, and didn't realize I had (one of the many boxes of stuff I retrieved after he died in'... more »

It's Flooding Down in Texas

It's flooding in San Antonio, actually, but here in Austin -- at least at my house -- we've had about 6.5 inches of rain since, when was it? -- Wednesday or Thursday night, I think.  That's about half of the entire year's rainfall totals so far, though the 6.5 inches is not what they're reporting officially.  I think our neighborhood gets more rain, for some reason.  The ground has actually become soft again, for the first time in I-don't-remember-how-long.

It was raining so hard at one point yesterday (or was it Thursday?), it knocked over a bunch of our 7-8 ft. tall sunflowers, as you can see here.

I hope they'll bounce back up after it stops raining.  I've really been enjoying looking out back and seeing that wall of flowers.  But also, lovin' the rain!

Wow!  A long-time famous Austin artist "friended" me this morning or yesterday on Facebook.  But now the news just came out that he died of cancer on Tuesday.

He was friends with lots of my other artist/photographer friends, and I did a website for his former wife (a photographer) a few years ago.  I'm going to have to assume one of them sent me the friend request.

Among many other things, he painted ginormous detailed landscapes of  Austin hill country scenes -- Pedernales Falls and the like -- that hung at the old Austin airport back when it used to be the airport and I used to fly.

So sad.  Jimmy, I hardly knew ye.

I've added 5 of my most recent works to my main art website, and deleted a whole lot of other work!  Some stuff went to the Archive pages, which can be found via the Sitemap link at the bottom.

Also rewrote my artist statement -- may need a further tweak or two.  If you read it, let me know what you think.

I'll be posting more new stuff later, one by one, after I scan them in, but for now, I'm going to catch a few more winks.  Four hours sleep just isn't enough!

Finished This One Sunday

Well, it is essentially the same as when I first painted it, maybe a month ago, but I repainted the whole thing on Sunday, and made a few changes.

The colors on my monitor are not exact: the dark blues are purpler in person, and the fushias are redder and brighter, the cyans are maybe a tad greener or yellower, but even using selective color sliders on every color in PhotoShop, I can't seem to capture all the colors correctly at the same time. :(

OTOH, you may see this completely differently than I do, depending on your monitor.  And there's nothing I can do about that.  Still planning to buy calibration software the next time I have any money.

At any rate, this whole color thing is terribly frustrating, as for me, the colors are the thing (or at least one of the 3 or 4 most important things in this body of work), and Iw... more »

Painters and Photographers Beware -- How Paintings Appear on Nexus7

I hate to keep complaining about G+'s new and "improved" interface designs, but I got a heads-up about text appearing on top of photos, so I checked photo albums on my lovely little Nexus7 tablet.

Not good.  In the Albums view, when you click on an individual photo, there's a translucent black band overlaying the tops and bottoms of the photos in 3 out of 4 cases:
1. vertical images in the vertical tablet orientation
2. vertical images in the horizontal tablet orientation
3. horizontal images in the horizontal tablet orientation

They look fine in a post, though, until you click on the photo, and then you have the same problem.

So, viewing an individual photo (or painting) on this tablet, and I assume on many other devices, destroys the composition thatt... more »

Circle Shares?

Does anyone know how to now view a circle to see if you want to add people in it?  I'm afraid to click on the "Add People" button, because I don't necessarily want to add a whole circle of people.

How do I know whether it works like it looks like it might work or not?  I s'pose I could click on the "Add Circle" button, and see what happens, and if it adds everyone in the circle, then I can delete the whole circle.

Methinks this change makes things unclear.  I know I'll learn, but hoo-boy!  Mystery meat navigation...didn't expect that from Google.

What a mess Google has made of the photo albums!  Can no longer grab a bunch of newly added pics and move them to the top (one of the best things G+ photo albums had going for it).  Have to go to Picasa (if you still can) to pick a new album cover, can't upload and share in one swoop, and I don't even know what else.

A Trip to the Tortilla Store

We have a Hispanic grocery store about a block from our house, so we walked up there this evening to get tortillas and beer -- hard shell tortillas (or tostadas) for giant nachos, a lunch staple here.  The first 5 pics in this album are from that trip.

I couldn't resist this darling scene on the hat aisle.  :)

There were no less than 4 locations for tortillas and tostada shells, yet we couldn't find any to our liking!  We only wanted like 10 thin ones, but we couldn't find any packages with less than 22 (or more) thick ones (and many broken), so we ended up with fresh baked soft tortillas that we'll fry ourselves.

This store is so cool; they have an entire aisle of big religious candles, and at least this one endcap of religious statues (in the album).  I should never go in there without my camera in hand!<... more »

It's Good to be Back in My Right Brain

Too much left brain lately, and I think I've done my last new website project for anyone else (pretty please, let it be so!).

My neighborhood website project is mostly done (well, are they ever really done?), so finally I can get back in the studio, finish #'s 1, 4, 6 & 8 and start some new ones.

This one is from about 3-4 weeks ago...whenever that was that I was more of a full-time painter.  It seems so long ago now.  I still have much to learn about using acrylics.  I'll probably end up back in  oils, but this is opening up some new possibilities, too, and it's kind of fun, actually.  :)

Is anyone enamored by any of the artist communities here?  I belong to a gazillion of them, moderate one, and am a co-moderator of another, but have gotten into never visiting any of them, except those I moderate, and never posting in those.

I think it's friggin awesome that my cover photo is bigger than my screen!   #snark

Seriously, I am trying to find things to like about the new G+ layout.  This isn't one of them.

I love the tags, though!

On my Nexus7, the changes are an improvement; on a high-res monitor laptop, they really aren't.  As always, YMMV.

I may even learn to like the notifications button.  Nice to know how many posts I missed since the last time I looked (yikes!)

And turning off the extension Gxtend that I used to make the page look better after the last major layout design change debacle at least puts my column back in the middle of the page.

I'm playing with just how much to upsize the column -- 150% almost gets the column to a decent sized width, but the text is too big, and the post button goes off-screen.  100% is a ridiculous,barely... more »

Gave a Presentation Last Night

Found out late yesterday afternoon that I needed to present at the quarterly meeting the new neighborhood website that we just finished creating .

I don't know when I stopped being nervous giving presentations, but I wasn't nervous.  I'm a 51% introvert, so standing up in front of an audience is totally not my thing!  But I don't think about myself standing up there feeling foolish -- I just focus on presenting the content I know so well.

I'm pleased to say, the presentation was very well received, and we got several ovations for the new website design.  We were focused on solving known problems with the old site, and on adding ways to get neighbors actively engaged...and creating a beautiful, readable design that hopefully works for everyone.

One of My Favorite in the New Series

...so far.  Oh, wait, they're all my favorites.  ;)

But I do really like this one quite a bit.  It started out horizontal with lots of red and blue and purple, but then I kept painting out what I'd painted in.

Learning to work with acrylic -- what a medium!  I used up a tube of white in a week on 8 small paintings (this being the whitest).  That stuff doesn't go far.

Clearly, not everybody agrees with my negative assessment of G+'s new layout (see bottom post in my super-wide screencap below, which is how it appears on my laptop after finally discovering I could close the hangout column).

Sure is a lot of gray space.

When Facebook started messing up their layout with too many confusing columns, I kind of quit spending much time there.

And seriously, I need to spend more time in the studio, so maybe G+ is doing me a favor.

Shoot, I was putting off posting stuff until they fixed the streaming issue, and now they've gone and broken the layout.  :\

Creative People Say No

"A Hungarian psychology professor once wrote to famous creators asking them to be interviewed for a book he was writing...[He] contacted 275 creative people. A third of them said “no.” Their reason was lack of time. A third said nothing. We can assume their reason for not even saying “no” was also lack of time and possibly lack of a secretary.

Time is the raw material of creation. Wipe away the magic and myth of creating and all that remains is work..."

Second Date

Seventeen years ago yesterday, my now hubby and I met for our second date (our 1st date was at the old Whole Foods cafe in downtown Austin on the day after his birthday).

For our 2nd date, we ate dim sum at Tien Hong, then went to see "James and the Giant Peach," and then went for a gelato at Dolce Vita.

By the end of the 2nd summer, we were living together.  Five years later, we bought a house together, and the year after that we got married.  (why not, at that point?)

We've now watched about 1300 movies together, and probably drank 10,000 beers between us in that 17 year time span.  Don't know how many pizzas we've shared.  Our life together is still wonderful and still so interesting; in fact, it's even better.  :)
