In the spirit of Mother’s and Father's Day just around the corner, we're featuring a story from +Sara LaVigna, a Software Engineer in Google Maps, whose path to Google was inspired by her parents field of work.

What is your role at Google?
My role at Google is as a software engineer at Ground Truth, a team under Google Maps. Through this initiative, we acquire high-quality map data from authoritative sources around the world and then apply a mix of advanced algorithms, supplemental data (including satellite, aerial and Street View imagery), and human input to create a map that corresponds as closely as possible to the real-world facts. I was an intern twice for the same team and now have been a full timer for 7 months. I love my team.

South Station has #goneGoogle

Boston commuters can now get some work done while waiting inside for the T, train, taxi or bus at South Station. Starting today, we’ve invested in a new infrastructure to support free public WiFi at South Station.

We’ve helped Boston businesses go Google, from Costco to Johnny Cupcakes. And we also understand that Bostonians want to be connected, whether at work, home or on the go. The new WiFi network at South Station will help Bostonians get the most out of the web and make the most of their city.

As part of its one year anniversary celebrations, Campus London, Google UK’s seven-storey technology startup hub, today opened its doors to London’s school pupils, teaching them about computer science, entrepreneurship and future job opportunities.

150 13-15 year-olds from schools across London attended.

The pupils got to design an app, pitch and code on Raspberry Pi computers.

We're hoping some of them appear here again in a few years time, where we'll be reading about their billion pound idea!

"When Google recruits the best and brightest computer science researchers, it doesn’t set them up inside some sort of secluded lab where people noodle on ideas that may or may not see the light of day. The web grows too quickly for that. Google pushes these minds to the front lines of the net, where they seek to remake the world’s technology as soon as possible."

+WIRED speaks to Principal Software Engineer +john wilkes about how Google has given him the opportunity to work in "what you might call a research lab for the internet at large."
