What have they done to my notifications? I don't get any of the important ones anymore and I get others I couldn't care less about. Are there settings now that I need to figure out?

Do we have unrealistic expectations for privacy in this age of the internet? Are you concerned about what companies like Google or Facebook do with your information? Why or why not? What sort of precautions, if any, do you take when interacting online? How much of your internet life would you be willing to live without if those precautions were no longer an option?

Paying it Forward with the Ultimate Gift: A record breaking chain of kidney transplants

This is one of the most inspiring stories I've read in a long time. A little bit of selflessness can go a long way - in this case, saving 30 lives and changing so many more.

Kidneys are critical for our well-being - they help purify our blood (filtering 200 liters of blood every day!), and remove waste products from our systems. Kidneys also help regulate blood pressure and produce the active form of Vitamin D, which is important for healthy bones and tissues. Each kidney contains about 1.5M nephrons , which are the filters that help clean our our system, so that's about 3M nephrons in total. But we can survive with as few as 300,000 nephrons, just 1/10 of our total. That means that, although people normally are born with two kidneys, they can live a healthy life with just one functioning kidney. That makes it possible for people to donate a single kidney to help others in need.

In the old days, kidney failure meant certain death. Now, with dialysis (effectively an artificial kidney) people can live with kidney failure, but their lives are dramatically impacted: people on dialysis need treatment 3-4 times a week, and each treatment can take up to 5 hours. The other option is kidney transplantation. Patients who receive transplants typically live longer than those who stay on dialysis, but there simply aren't enough kidneys to go around for transplants. In the US alone, about 26M people suffer from chronic kidney disease, more than 350,000 Americans are on dialysis, and more than 70,000 are waiting for transplants. In Canada, 70% of all people on our organ donor lists are waiting for kidneys.

Why are so many people waiting for kidney transplants? Simply put, it's not easy to find a match, even if there is a kidney available. To ensure that the donated kidney isn't rejected, the donor needs to be compatible in terms of blood type and antibodies with the recipient. The donor could be deceased or living, and all donations are welcome for the patients, but transplants from living donors tend to last longer than those from deceased donors (about twice as long for transplants with a strong antigen match from living donors compared to deceased donors). Unfortunately, even if a patient has a relative who is willing and able to donate a kidney, the match is not always a good one. This is where national kidney registers come in.

The registry that led to the amazing chain of events/lives saved in the New York Times story is the National Kidney Register . They work with hospitals to keep track of who is looking for kidneys and who is willing to part with theirs - and the register determines which paths might be taken to save the most lives. Typically, a donor would be a friend or a relative of a patient who's kidney doesn't match the need of their friend or relative. If the patient receives a kidney from another donor, the friend/relative could then donate their kidney to someone else in need, and so on and so on. Until recently, the record chain was 7 - 7 donations and 14 people involved. What's so amazing about this story is that the system was able to get up to 30 donations involving 60 people (30 donors and 30 recipients), and it was all started by a good samaritan, who was inspired to give one of his kidneys after talking to a co-worker.

It's worth taking the time to read the full story, and see the videos of some of the folks involved talking about what it meant to them to give and receive their kidneys. The advances we've seen in these sorts of matching systems and transplants are possible through a combination of advancing in medical technology/treatment and computer science/optimization research, with a little bit of good human nature thrown in.

Very interesting. I happen to believe that depression can be a combination of factors... it's hard to say if it's purely physiological or if it's also psychological. Or are there two different kinds? Maybe this will help us distinguish between the two on an individual basis, and therefor help us determine what the best treatment might be in each situation.

And for today's dose of good news...

DNA robot could kill cancer cells nanorobots have a chance at becoming real therapeutics

Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have developed a robotic device made from DNA that could potentially seek out specific cell targets within a complex mixture of cell types and deliver important molecular instructions, such as telling cancer cells to self-destruct. Inspired by the mechanics of the body’s own immune system, the technology might one day be used to program immune responses to treat various diseases. The research findings appear today in Science.

Whether or not these structures will work in a living organism remains to be seen. For one thing, they are designed to communicate with molecules on a cell's surface. The nanorobots are quickly cleared by the liver or destroyed by nucleases, enzymes chew up stray bits of DNA. It might be possible to coat them with a substance such as polyethylene glycol, widely used to boost the length of time a drug can remain in the body

84% of 400 mortgage forclosures audited in California were illegally processed -The improprieties range from the basic — a failure to warn borrowers that they were in default on their loans as required by law — to the arcane. For example, transfers of many loans in the foreclosure files were made by entities that had no right to assign them and institutions took back properties in auctions even though they had not proved ownership.

Commissioned by Phil Ting, the San Francisco assessor-recorder, the report examined files of properties subject to foreclosure sales in the county from January 2009 to November 2011. About 84 percent of the files contained what appear to be clear violations of law, it said, and fully two-thirds had at least four violations or irregularities.

What have they done to my notifications? I don't get any of the important ones anymore and I get others I couldn't care less about. Are there settings now that I need to figure out?

Having fun being a Covert Cupid :)

We have been at it all day to make #Pirling that much easier for you!

Now when anyone submits to the form It will be automatically updated. So give it about 5-10 mins before you see your submission. Also I will be updating who has been sent gifts already. Try and be considerate and look towards those who haven't been gifted before those who have! Here's a Quick re-cap of the steps!

How to Become a Covert Cupid:

♥ Circle +Covert Cupid and Share. Happiness is better shared.

♥ Create an +Amazon.com Wishlist, in your country's Amazon store.
♥ Make sure to have correct shipping >> (http://goo.gl/c8iaw) and permalink >> (http://goo.gl/1KKyi)

♥ Post your list to the Google Doc. [FORM] http://goo.gl/BPk5W

♥ View the [LIST] (http://goo.gl/bWIhY)

♥ Tell me who you gifted! >> (http://goo.gl/5bCyk)

♥ When you receive a gift, post a picture with the hashtags #Pirl #GShip and leave a note to +Covert Cupid :)
