Alzheimer's is one of my personal fears- the idea of losing your identity and the ability to care for yourself but still being otherwise physically healthy seems like one of the worst possible things that can happen to you. Here's hoping this new find leads to a cure.

Kidneys are critical for our well-being - they help purify our blood (filtering 200 liters of blood every day!), and remove waste products from our systems. Kidneys also help regulate blood pressure and produce the active form of Vitamin D, which is important for healthy bones and tissues. Each kidney contains about 1.5M nephrons , which are the filters that help clean our our system, so that's about 3M nephrons in total. Very interesting. I happen to believe that depression can be a combination of factors... it's hard to say if it's purely physiological or if it's also psychological. Or are there two different kinds? Maybe this will help us distinguish between the two on an individual basis, and therefor help us determine what the best treatment might be in each situation.

Maryland House of Delegates passes gay marriage law. Senate a sure thing. [Daily Kos] It was close thing in Maryland today for marriage equality. The legislation needed 71 votes in the Maryland House of Delegates and it got 71, with 67 delegates opposed. The Maryland Senate is expected to pass the bill easily since it passed with ease last year but could not secure enough votes in the House:

During a recent interview with the hip-hop magazine XXL, rapper Too $hort encouraged teenage boys to “turn girls out” by pushing “her up against the wall.”1 The 45-year-old rapper continued, graphically urging his audience to put their hands inside the underwear of middle school-aged girls in order to achieve what he called “mind manipulation.” The magazine packaged the disturbing monologue under the headline “Fatherly Advice From Too $hort.”

84% of 400 mortgage forclosures audited in California were illegally processed -The improprieties range from the basic — a failure to warn borrowers that they were in default on their loans as required by law — to the arcane. For example, transfers of many loans in the foreclosure files were made by entities that had no right to assign them and institutions took back properties in auctions even though they had not proved ownership.

Commissioned by Phil Ting, the San Francisco assessor-recorder, the report examined files of properties subject to foreclosure sales in the county from January 2009 to November 2011. About 84 percent of the files contained what appear to be clear violations of law, it said, and fully two-thirds had at least four violations or irregularities.

I love my Libertarian friends. But having said that, here is what Libertarianism is to me. It's the equivalent of one day deciding that there really ought to be gold at the end of the rainbow, and thereafter behaving as if such a thing were possible- demanding it, in fact. Then proceeding to declare that anyone who acknowledges that gold at the end of the rainbow is actually impossible just doesn't like gold.

I will take it personally if this man is elected president. It will be personal- he believes he should have the right to tell me what it means to be a woman. What gives anyone that right? Why do some people even feel we need an authority on the subject, and how would you go about determining who that authority should be?

The very fact that the insurance mandate to cover birth control is an issue is obscene. If you don't want insurance mandated, that should be your argument. The idea that you would select a particular service provided primarily to women as the sticking point is both disingenuous and hateful. When these idiots start arguing that there should be no mandate to cover prostate exams, I'll believe it's about cost savings and somebody's warped version of freedom. In the meantime, it's about telling women to fuck off.
