It is time to open the doors.

The real-name policy you've put in place aren't workable.

I agree with them and have defended your policy quite a bit all over the place here on Google+. I agree with you that "being real" is the best aesthetic, but they simply aren't being enforced fairly, or properly, and it's causing too much distraction.

Your team needs to freaking get to work fixing the many bugs and issues on Google+ and doesn't need to spend its time... more »

Why was the Steve Jobs bio moved up by four months? Apple and Jobs do not do things randomly. This is probably strategic. It's not about helping Walter Isaacson sell more books during the holiday season. My read: a CEO change is pending before end of calendar year. And this is how the news will break.

So many folks, including some close personal friends, seem to be working on the same kind of startup right now. The pitch is that their startups "will introduce/matchmake you with new people you should be friends with" (usually in real life).

Some will do this through shared interest, some are based on friend-of-a-friend, some a based on proximity (and most a combinations of the above). Some are smartphone apps, some are web apps, some are both.

Here's the thing. I just don't get it. Sure it's "cool" but where is the business? Where are you delivering me something I couldn't already get?

Be clear: I'm not talking about dating because that is another story and people in that demographic will pay to get laid.

But "my startup helps you find new friends" just gets a thumbs down from me off the bat, no... more »

What is with the massive rate hike for a SxSW 2012 Interactive badge? $595 is just the early bird pricing (available now: https://cart.sxsw.com/products/show?product_code=reg-ia)

The same badge was $375 for SxSWi 2009, and went up to $450 last year (I can't find the exact prices for SxSWi 2010 as I didn't buy an early-bird ticket then).

Attending SxSW is by no means a "right" and as a company SxSW Company can set the price at whatever they like. However that's quite a steep increase and while the conference/festival has increased in attendance, I can't understand how that would equate to an increase in costs.

My new CBSi/ZDNet column on G+ and NSFW. It's for tomorrow but I just posted it now - the issues with Google+ and NSFW content is bothering so many people (myself included) and I'm hearing more and more negative stories.

I love G+ so much and yet it has this huge drawback that limits not only my full participation, but excludes artists of all kinds and simply does not make sense.

Google not having a clear strategy (clear internally AND externally) on handling brands and famous people is perhaps the only stain on an otherwise well executed design + launch of Google Plus.

From my own experience (mainly my time at MySpace) I know that 'normal' people want to use Social Media to engage with celebrities and they also want to engage with brands. I found it crazy + sad, but I met MySpace users who loved the fact that they could be friends with their favorite food: Burger King Whopper (etc..).

I think one of the problem with Google's DNA is that it is full of the type of people who are simply never in a million years going to think that friending a burger is cool or desired, nor would they know anyone who thinks like that. This is the problem with the cold, clinical and academic approach to development that Google takes.

Why do people still put on events like Pitch (http://www.pitchevent.com/), and why are people still supporting this crap?

The "pitch" is that startups get to pitch to VCs etc, and for that they have to pay $299 for a table. Attendees can pay $20 (or free with coupons flying around social media).

Sorry but VC's are dying to get quality deal flow and will pay for the privilege (cost of doing business). Conversely startups should be spending their capital on building value, not access.

Someone has it the wrong way around here...

But then you factor in that clearly this is being organized to be a social event, which is why the attendee tickets are so cheap.

It's just a shame that the startups are the ones that are bankrolling it.

Great news! I'm proud to announce Google+ Profiles is launching a new privacy enhancement in response to user feedback. Starting later this week, you will be able to set the privacy setting of your gender on your Google+ Profile just as you control other information about yourself. :-)
