I think the more interesting part of this article is that apparently 29% of the people surveyed thought that we shouldn't be allowed to use 3D printers in home for anything, not just printing guns. Good luck with that.

Can we all take a moment and just acknowledge the fact that Hubble is still doing awesome science 23 years after it was launched? Say what you will, but dollar for dollar, NASA still delivers quite possible the best bang for every dollar we put into it, compared to virtually any other government expense we have.

Did our first play through of Android today. Easily the most complicated board game I've ever played to date. The instruction manual is a daunting 47 page affair, and I've never seen so many tokens with one game. Definitely not something I'd recommend for folks who don't enjoy digging into a game, but there is some fun to be had once you've sorted through it. The rules level out after testing a few rounds, and it seems like there are a lot of different ways in which to play your individual characters. It's almost like a Shadowrun type game done as a one-shot board board game.

Planning out the game room for the new house. Building out a model to think it through. Still super basic, but I still love how Sketchup helps put an idea into perspective.

North Korea is continuing their slow drum roll to the beat of nuclear war. They say on the news they may do another test fire of not one, but several missles as a show of force. They have weapons. They are strong now. Man... that sounds SO familiar... but I just... can't... quite... put my finger on it...

I really love the treatment Pottery Barn used for their centerpiece that's on the site today. Fantastic simplicity, clearly actionable, concise messaging. They aren't screwing around trying to flashy or overly clever. They want you to shop, they want you to know you can get free shipping, and they give you a gateway right to the categories. The only minor thing I don't get is why "free ship" is lowercase, and "DAY" is uppercase.

Ugh, I'm not sure if I've ever cared as little about what happens to a character as I do Andrea in The Walking Dead. Actually, I do care - I wish they would just kill her off already so we can move on from this storyline. Seriously, why wouldn't you take the truck? What kind of moron would just walk off and leave it?

The @GoBoundless trial is going to be one to watch, as it has fairly broad-reaching implications for #OER and open educational content in general. The core issue is that, just as with the music industry, you have legacy companies fighting tooth and nail to stop progress, to the detriment of the consumer. Except instead of your ears being the victim, it's the educational growth of the country. Imagine how much it would help students to not have to shell out $1000 a semester for books. Knowledge inherently wants to be free. If it's gated and privileged only for those that can afford the access, then it isn't really knowledge.

Been playing with my news reader options on my tablet. I want to like Google Currents, but it's bugging the hell out of me that I can't put custom feeds under their respective header. For instance, my favorite football blog isn't in their sports repo, but if I add it manually, it just ends up under "Feeds," with no apparent way to put it under "Sports." Any users know of something obvious I'm missing here, or is that just how it has to be?

I just saw a comment on a health care article that said (paraphrased): Universal health care is a noble goal, but we can't do it because OMG DEFENSE SPENDING or everyone will come after us.

Look people. Last year the United States spent $711 Billion (with a B) on our military. You know what that amounts to? That's only a mere $4B less than the next 14 countries combined (most of whom are our allies). China is #2. We outspend them by a factor of 5:1. 41% of all military spending in the world comes from the US. Again, it takes the next 14 countries combined to match us. By the time you make it to #15, Turkey, they spend only 2.5% of what we do, and account for only 1% of global military spending.

No one wants to shut down our military. Everyone understands how important defense is. But to not acknowledge that we have gone absolutely out of control with our military budget is an... more »

There are a lot of rational, valid debates that can take place regarding how much sense it has made to subsidize solar power in this country, and why it has or hasn't worked. Like, a whole lot. And then Fox News trots out this "expert" who says regarding Germany, AND I QUOTE: "They're a smaller country, and they've got lots of sun. Right? They've got a lot more sun than we do. The problem is it's a cloudy day and it's raining, you're not gonna have it."

Fox News is slowly becoming its own caricature. This is a topic that, frankly, deserves lengthy, educated, rational discussion. Instead, they tell people about solar sort of how your grade school teacher told you Christopher Columbus was a brave, mighty explorer that discovered America. Then you went on to high school and college and discovered just how many ways that story was wrong. But hey, they... more »

Letting my geek flag fly here for a second. When I started tabletop RPGing back in high school 15 years ago, I started with Earthdawn. It's a game that I've stayed close to ever since. It was originally published by FASA, which closed in 2001 and sold the rights (along with properties such as Shadowrun) to WizKids. Shortly after, they recovered the rights, which were licensed to Living Room Games. After a short and mired run, they shuttered, and RedBrick took over the banner, producing an overall nice third edition (I own every book from 3ed, and glad for it). Recently, RedBrick sort of vanished, and now, after eleven years, Earthdawn is back under the FASA umbrella. Talk about the game without a country. Not sure what FASA making games again means for the franchise, but hopefully it's good. In a way, it's neat to see it "come home."

So here's a fun question. Does anyone know if you have a personal G+ account, and one through your company's Google Apps, can you merge or otherwise connect them? I know about Google Takeout, but that comes across as just being a data dump, rather than something to merge or connect. Or am I totally missing something?

You know, it sort of blows my mind that after all this time, Google Music still has a 20,000 song limit that you can't do anything to expand - paying or otherwise. I'd love to totally untether from my local server, but I can't because of that. And on top of it all, the Music Manager app is just awful. Like, 2004 awful. I can't believe that's the best they could do.
