... the timeless photographic technique of  "FTBW" ( from the bus window ).  Another of the rare landscape shots I managed while in Ecuador last week. By the time we reached our destination ( about 15 minutes later ) the cloud cover had descended and completely covered the valley.... sigh

I shot a lot of doors in San Miguel de Allende...

... but some of my favorite images are of the door details, specifically the door knockers. While some similarities existed in style each door seemed to have its own unique knocker. Some were hand made some where not... all of them were image worthy... just sayin'

Since I angered the weather gods....

... and they didn't cooperate with me while I was in Ecuador, I ended up shooting at my wife's WorldVets clinic. ( the real reason we were in Ecuador, anyway...) So while I didn't get very much at all in the way of scenic shots, I did capture some very handsome four-footed friends...

Home again....

... after a week spent among the wonderful people and sights of Atuntaqui, Ecuador. We were there as part of a WorldVets trip ( which my wife was leading ) to help with the control of the local population of street animals. During the 3 days of clinics she and her team performed over 200 surgeries and I... well I just went along to take pictures. 

My original intent was to hit the surrounding countryside for landscape shots (the  place is simply gorgeous ) while she ran the clinics... but alas it was not to be. The weather gods so did not get the "memo of intent" from me and dialed in (pretty much) constant fog and/or rain. This is one of the very few landscape shots that I managed to capture when it cleared one morning for about an hour... sigh

Tomorrow we leave for a week in Otavalo, Ecuador. Don't really know about the status of the interwebs where we'll be so most likely I'll be "unplugged" for the trip... : (

... of the architectual images I shot during the +A Slice of Time - SF Bay Photowalk 2013 in January.  I jokingly told my buddy +Lee Daniels that it was produced via the "anus extractus" method of processing... in that the original in no way resembles the final image. (okay, other that in basic shape...) What started out as an experiment in lighting effects became a labor of love and ultimately an addition to my portfolio... funny how that works sometimes... : ))

Maria's Rock...

The story goes like this....

Maria works for my wife at her Veterinary Hospital. Like most folks she doesn't get to travel as much as she woud like. When someone she knows is going somewhere she makes a simple request... would you bring back a small rock for me? So, each time either my wife or I travel, we bring back a small rock or piece of coral for her from the place we visited. As a result, we each have a shelf in her collection with our contributions on it.

During the +A Slice of Time - SF Bay Photowalk 2013  last month I put a little twist on it for her. I took a shot of her rock in situ before I pick it up and pocketed it for its trip to the other coast. Since I was using the GPS tagging thingy on my MK III, it logged exactly where I got it from. Everybody shot one...

... this one's mine.  On Saturday morning of the +A Slice of Time - SF Bay Photowalk 2013, we found ourselves up the road from San Fran at China Camp State Park. At the location chosen by +Nathan Wirth, there was a bluff overlooking Rat Island. I tell you what,  there where so many of us there that you couldn't swing a cat without knocking over someone else's tripod! Another problem was that I couldn't go wide enough for the shot I wanted without somebody in the frame... usually in a totally "uncropable"  position.

Towards lunch after folks had moved onto other areas of the shoot... I went back up and captured this frame. And then it snowed!

Earlier I was posting about getting some new macro rails... then lo and behold... it started snowing here. It only snowed for about 20 minutes... but I rushed my new setup outside and made an attempt at immortalizing a snowflake.

Is the result as good as the work +Don Komarechka cranks out? Well... umm... no... not even close. Am I going down the right track? Well, I've got some gaps in my "Flake-Flow" to work out but, I think so... : ))

Overcome age for a mere $650.00....

... plus shipping. Yesterday, I recieved my new set of macro focusing rails from +Really Right Stuff... ( I bought the twin-rail ultimate package ).  Why, you might ask. Well let me tell ya... it was totally because I seemed incapable of hand holding my camera with the MPE-65 1x5 closeup lens on it. Once you are down into the teeny with that bad boy the DOF becomes soooo very razor thin that the slightest gnats-arse of movement is enough to render the subject out of focus... sigh.

So unlike +Don Komarechka who is young and can handhold this lens to produce such stunning skycrystal images... alas I am way too old and shaky to get 'er done. Hence, the rails which allow me to setup on a tripod and get the areas of the subject I want to be in focus... and keep it there.

So I shot some street...

One of the segments or walks during the San Francisco LE Photowalk was "Street Shooting". It was hosted by the street shootin' guy himself, +Brian Day.  Although I didn't get much of a chance to pick Brian's brain... I did take a step out of my norm and do a little of the street thing.... or tried anyway. 

It occurred to me that street shooting is the antithesis of LE. Street scenes come and go, ebb and flow, burst into interesting and then not.... real quick. There is no time to setup up a tripod, compose, run some calculations, and wait on a several minute exposure. Ya just shoot what ya sees... real quick... 'cause its gonna be gone in a nanosecond. The Cliff House Resturant

On the first shoot of the San Francisco Long Exposure Photowalk we found ourselves at the Sutro Baths.  Overlooking the Baths is the Cliff House Restaurant which is one of the areas oldest and most respected eateries. While it has been updated and made over many times, the Cliff House has been in continuous operation since 1863. In 2004 it was restored (again) and the "Sutro Wing" (pictured here) was added. 

From an image standpoint I'm pretty tickled it came out at all. This was shot late in the sunset and was hand-held @ 1/10s.... a "long exposure" for a hand-hold, fer sure. All I can say is, next time I'll use a tripod instead of trusting to the gods of Image Stabilized lenses.

As we were packing up...

... to leave Pacifica for the next destination +Nathan Wirth had selected for us, +Athena Carey and I noticed a lone tree on the ridge line. I had a 70-200 on my body and offered it to Athena to shoot with. Her gear was already packed so she passed on the lens and told me to shoot it... so I did. Athena, I'm not sure this is how you saw the scene in your head... be this is how the image evolved for me.

As I mentioned in a previous post....

... after the "official" San Francisco Long Exposure Photowalk  was over, +Nathan Wirth graciously piled +Athena Carey, +Grant Murray, +John Kosmopoulos and I into his car for a last day of shooting. The first stop was the Pacifica Pier where everybody unlimbered their gear with the thought of more LE mischief. Over the course of the photowalk I had successfully proven that I was a master of WT-LE (way too - long exposure) and had demonstrated a firm grasp on the principles of NE-LE (not enough - long exposure)... so I went looking for something else. Committing a sort of LE heresy, I turned my back on the rocks beaches, and crashing waves of Pacifica to explore the countryside on the other side of the road. The windswept trees and morning mists reminded me, yet again, of why I love to shoot in the Bay area. .... of my friends +Swee Oh and +John Kosmopoulos ( with a little "plus" bump from +Athena Carey).... here is a shot taken during the recent San Francisco Bay Area Long Exposure Photowalk. Swee shot the same scene (posted here : http://goo.gl/0oQBC ) and wanted to see how mine turned out. Tadaaaa....

Its very cool to see how two different photographers interpet the (virtually) same shot. Mine is a closer crop, in my much loved square aspect and processed in a slightly warmer tone. It seemed to me that in the wider crop the focus of the image was the pipes (there are more of them) and as I cropped in the emphasis shifted to the subject... which is where I wanted it to be.

Photographically speaking...

...  my best day of shooting during the Bay Area Long Exposure Photowalk last week was Saturday. I was really comfortable among the city's fabulous architecture. +Brian Spencer, +John Kosmopoulos and I found ourselves taking different routes to the primary "photowalk targets" and this resulted in many unique shots for me. As the official architecture portion of the photowalk drew to a close Brian, John and I were joined by +Swee Oh and +Bella Lim. We decided to keep going and, as it is her city, Swee took on the role of tour guide. As a result, we ended up in places that I would have never seen ( or knew existed! ) let alone photographed. Swee, thank you so much for your time,  companionship and tour guide capabilities!...   ｡◕‿◕｡

More musings....

One of the things on the downside of the San Francisco Bay Area Long Exposure Photowalk was missing the folks that couldn't, for one reason or another, be there. +Robin Griggs Wood and +E.E. Giorgi couldn't make it and I was so looking forward meeting these talented ladies. And... and... and...

The list of folks that I wish were there is many, many plussers long but most sorely missed was my buddy +Lee Daniels. She had originally planned to attend but then shiz got complicated and she had to back out at the last minute... sigh. I was sooo looking forward to seeing actually how long we could talk if no one had to hang up!... double sigh... Anyway, Lee is always chiding me about not doing bird pictures or for that matter not really doing much in the way of "nature" shots. So Lee.... we will get together for some shooting in the near future... more »
