Photographer Loses Quadracopter on Job in Weird Way
Unauthorized quadracopter filming results in the vehicle getting stuck in the arms of a statue atop the Marion, Ohio court house.
http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/05/02/Marion-courthouse-helicopter.html
"Terry Cline, a 57-year-old Marion native and a videographer who owns Challenge Productions, said he has about $1,500 invested in what is commonly called a drone helicopter. Though it is remote controlled, it’s sophisticated: it can fly as high as 900 feet and is GPS-equipped. With the camera, Cline can take still photographs and record or watch real-time video.
He said he was working on a promotional video about the city when the chopper got snagged by the wind: “It was like Lady Justice was a magnet and just sucked it in.”
He swears he didn’t crash it and thinks it’s ridiculou... more »

What the Duck is back & my interview with Aaron Johnson
My favorite photo-centric comic strip is "back". What the Duck hasn't been daily for a while, but Aaron is back at it. He's also a great guy and I happened to interview him in 2009 about his emerging success as a comic strip artist. Click through to hear the full interview and read more about the great plush toys he's selling of his beloved characters.

Yosemite Sunrise
I was revisiting some old film scans from several years ago thanks to a client request and rediscovered this photo. Slide film isn't very forgiving in regard to dynamic range, but I always liked the contrasty nature of this photo. It was taken on a cold snowy winter morning well before sunrise. Taking a long exposure allowed for the faint color in the sky to register quite strongly which I always thought was quite striking.

Got this double rainbow over San Francisco Bay Bridge at sunset last night. It was an unbelievable thrill even though everything went wrong! When I got there, it was pouring rain, dark and gloomy. The high winds kept getting rain on my damn lens, which I had to keep wiping off. This made for some horrible streaking in many images. I didn't have a heavy tripod either, so again the high winds didn't help camera shake. I had not cleaned my sensor in many months, so at f/22, every single dust bunny showed, hundreds and hundreds of them. I had no time to or materials to clean it so I just kept shooting. Then out of nowhere, the clouds parted for 3 to 4 minutes, sunlight shot through and right onto the bridge, hitting a sheet of rain that happened to be passing over at that moment. Totally lucky! So after cloning out about a thousand tiny little black dust dots and streaks, this was what I was... more »

My New Kickstarter Project: Photographer’s Social Media Mouse
Ever since evangelizing the importance of social media to fellow photographers in 2006, I’ve long yearned for a tool to help balance photo/video editing time with the incredibly important task of marketing myself on social media. After years of research and prototyping I’m happy to announce a new Kickstarter project to realize my dream, a mouse designed especially for photographers who are super active on social media.
Details here on my blog:

This Weekends Gear Test: Zeiss 70-200mm T2.9 EF Mount
Compared it to the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM II both for video and still photography. While I haven't published results yet I am in love with the Zeiss. Most definitely out of my league to own, but happy +BorrowLenses.com exists to rent it. Real photos and videos to come after I finish reviewing the footage.

Interesting 1st Episode (of 14) on lost amusement parks of the San Francisco Bay Area by +Kris Rowberry
I knew there were lost parks like Sutro Baths which I love to photograph and Playland on Ocean beach, but it was news to me that there were several others. Interestingly Kris finds some of the original rides from these parks and shows you were they currently are.

Fog Over San Francisco
This is a still I took from a timelapse sometime ago. There is something magical about the fog and when you see it in motion, flowing and ebbing, you start to appreciate it more. It really is like watching the tides of the sea. Pair that with iconic details like the Golden Gate Bridge and the skyline of San Francisco and its all the more special.
