Photoshop action set for creating (fake) long exposure clouds in post - use with care!
I've created a set of photoshop actions to create subtle looking long exposure streaks of clouds in post production. Please use with care and consideration, this action set is meant as a reference or source of inspiration to create those clouds yourself or better yet: to shoot them in-camera with the Formatt Hitech Filters for example:) http://www.bwvision.com/photoshop-action-download-long-exposure-cloud-streaks/

On July 9 EU parliament will vote for a proposal that will restrict the Freedom of Panorama. This means that when you take photographs of public buildings on public ground for commercial purposes this is only allowed when you have the approval of the copy rights holder of the building.
This is a flagrant breach of my freedom of expression as a photographer but also if you’re just taking holiday snaps you want to post on Facebook or any other website.
How will this law be enforced practically when you take pictures? It’s impossible but when you take pictures of let’s say London’s skyline, you’re likely to be harassed by zealous security or police officers, especially when you take out your tripod. It’s simple, since no one is wearing a sign on his head indicating he’s a photographer with commercial purposes they will look for characteristics that give them reason to suspect you’re having commercial purposes. Of course that’s very likely when you have a tripod or something larger than an iPhone! And if you actually have commercial intentions or just want to avoid being harassed, then try finding the copyright holder of the buildings in your photo - good luck with that!
How will this law be enforced when publishing pictures of public buildings? You will face legal action if you post your London Skyline photo on your Facebook page or any other website and if you don’t have the prior approval of the copyright holders of the buildings.
Come on, have they all gone mad? So this is how my photos will look like in the future if useless bureaucracy gets their way: even blacker than usual.___

Colours of New York City
The colour rendition of my Visual Acoustics VIII - New York City Sunrise image.
More colour work to come.
Facebook or any other photo sharing site on the Internet doesn't do justice to my panoramic images. Even more, no photo sharing site does do justice to my images at all. Best to see them live, for example at the Rotella galleries in NYC and Las Vegas where you can see my images in sizes up to almost 100 inches (2.5 meters).
I used my iSGM B&W workflow method for processing this image. Yes, it's applicable to anything;)

Redesigned website - Focused on sharing knowledge
Some of you might have noticed it but I've redesigned my website www.bwvision.com. Not only did I give it a more contemporary look and feel, but also made it such that it's clear that my website is not a gallery of my own work but a website focused on sharing knowledge on the art of B&W photography, long exposure photography and fine art in general with clear and intuitive navigation. It's not completely finished yet (still need to add the calendar/news/event section and a few more features) but why not have a look and tell me what you think of it? And if you want to see some specific articles/tutorials/topics let me know! This page will be an extension of that website. Special thanks to Douwe Dijkstra who gave me some valuable advice on the design of the logo. That's a man who knows his trade!

New Logo for website
While redesigning my website www.bwvision.com (that exploded into cyberspace a few days ago), I took some time to redesign my logo. I needed something simple but not with the usual camera in it. Just a few simple lines to indicate the association with architecture like bridges. And the colour orange had to play an important role. So here it is after a hard day's work: bw/vision or black and white w/ (with) vision. Still not done with the website yet but it will be done in a few more days. Hope you like the simple logo.

My website crashed - under construction
My website www.bwvision.com has recently exploded into cyberspace. Trying to fix it while running a temporary WP theme but the layout is all over the place. Hmm, it feels like I've lost my home on the web and living in a tent in one of the cyber streets now. If anyone has any suggestions for a good theme, it would be appreciated. In the meantime: please be patient, you can still find all the tutorials on my website but you have to look for a while:)

JT Signature Edition kits now also with Firecrest 3, 6, 10, 13 and 16 stops plus EXTENSIVE REVIEWS on the Firecrest filters from all over the web

Recently the JT Signature Edition kits from +Formatt-Hitech have been updated and released with the new Firecrest ND filters: 16, 13, 10, 6 and 3 stops Firecrest filters, either as SuperSlim circular or rectangular filters. If you’re not convinced yet on the quality of the Firecrest filters: I’ve collected the first 10 reviews I could find on the Internet on the Firecrest filters from photographers and cinematographers and put them together in my new article on my blog. There are also comparisons between the LEE BS, Singh Ray’s 15 stops ND and the Firecrest.

B&W Analogue Film Photography - developing and scanning film - a practical tutorial

As I’m continuing re-sharing older interviews that were almost impossible to find on my website after so many years, and after redesigning the website, I’m now also re sharing older tutorials written by guest writers that are worth sharing again.
This one is written by +Matt Toynbee in 2011 and it is about developing film. Since I think film still has its place in this digital era (and often looks superior compared to digital) I’m picking up film photography again soon (looking for a nice used Hasselblad analog camera btw) and I thought it would be nice to share this interesting tutorial with you.

Another lost spotlight interview re-shared: Marc Koegel Interview
Another ‘lost’ spotlight interview I did almost 4 years ago and is worth highlighting again, is this interview with +Marc Koegel. One of the reasons I switched from seascapes to fine art architecture in 2009 was after I saw Marc’s fine art architectural work. In fact one of the very first fine art architectural photos I saw was Marc’s, and that was long before fine art architecture has become so popular these days.

Another Cole Thompson interview - the Vision behind the Angel Gabriel photo by Cole Thompson
I've just re-shared an older Cole Thompson interview and now I'm also sharing a new one that I haven't shared before. It's part of a "the vision behind..." series. The first and only one I did was with Cole Thompson in which Cole revealed the vision behind and the making of one of his more well known photographs: The Angel Gabriel http://www.bwvision.com/artists-vision-cole-thompson/

Cole Thompson interview
A few years ago I published a series of interviews on my website, called "in the spotlight interview". They were a popular series of interviews but after I revamped my website 2 years ago most of them were 'lost'. I've decided to re-share the interviews I did with +Cole Thompson, +Marc Koegel , Michael Levin and a few more prominent photographers again, in the next few days for your reading pleasure. First re-shared interview is an interview with Cole. One of my favorite contemporary B&W fine art artists.

New Tutorial on creating 'hard' selections to isolate and control shapes
An important part of my B&W workflow is to deconstruct a photo to just shapes and light. Control shapes and light, and you control everything in a photo. To be able to do that shapes and light have to be identified and then isolated first. Shapes are visually identified and can be isolated by creating accurate 'hard' selections. Light can automatically be identified and isolated by creating luminosity masks. I've written tutorials on all aspects that can be found on my website. This is part 4 out of the 4-part series on creating hard selections to isolate and control shapes: http://www.bwvision.com/selections-putting-it-all-together/ The previous tutorial on creating luminosity masks for identifying, isolating and finally controlling light can be found here: more »

Concept behind the B&W Speed workflow: Leave technical limitations behind, your vision is the only limit.
After you took the shot, keeping in mind an effective composition and the visual impact of the photo, and you start working in the digital darkroom then every photograph, whether it’s color or black and white, consists of 2 major elements: Light and shapes.
My iSGM2.0 workflow is designed to convert color photos to B&W fine art photographs, regardless the original color information, as all photo editing software, including plugins are designed to do, and therefore those software will limit the artistic execution. The iSGM 2.0 workflow objective is to convert color photos to B&W according to your artistic vision, independent of the original color information, with full control of the 2 key elements in a photograph: light and shapes. Shapes can be controlled by using ‘hard’ selections in combination with tools like gradients according to the iSGM method, and light can be controlled partly by the iSGM technique and completely by the use of luminosity masks. Combine both and you have full and subtle control of any B&W photograph. No technical limitations anymore, your vision will be the only limit.___

Colosseum Rome 2014
Not part of any BW-turned-color-challenge, just the start of new work and because I like to challenge myself: sometimes color, sometimes B&W. Whatever I feel is right.
This is a shifted vertical panorama photo, shot with a tilt-shift lens with combined exposure times, something I will do more from now on: merging a long exposure and a normal exposure together in a panorama photo. The first shot, the lower part of the panorama is a normal exposure. Immediately afterwards, I shifted the lens to the maximum upward position and took a long exposure of 431 seconds. This way I could get the whole scene into the frame and combine exposure times for different effects.
Tech info:
- Canon 5DIII
- 24mm TS-E lens
- f/7.1 (both shots)
- ISO100
- Exposure times: 431s (7minutes 11 seconds) and 1/320s

*How to use and create luminosity masks in a B&W processing workflow*
I created a tutorial on the use, the creation and the importance of luminosity masks in a taylor made B&W workflow as I have. I’m stating the following: any photograph always has 2 important elements when you start processing it (and assuming the composition is already good): there are only shapes and light that you need to control to align it with your vision. As a B&W photographer (or a colour photographer) you only need to control shape and light to control everything. You control shapes in my workflow with so called hard selections and light with luminosity mask selections. Combine the two types of selection and you can process any photograph beyond your wildest expectations, but within the limitations of your vision:)

The colour challenge for b&w photographers on Facebook has come to an end but still posting some colour work. (I will post those colour photos here on G+ too btw) Now in a completely different genre: street photography.
This one’s inspired by Magnum photographer Trent Parke who uses harsh low sunlight to isolate his subjects and deliberately underexposing the shadow parts.
