Windows 10 – A Serious Threat To Bitcoin Privacy

Windows 10 has been praised for its sleek and simple user interface, improvements from Windows 8 and the integration of user-friendly voice-driven assistant Cortana. However, users have discovered one big problem with the operating system – privacy.

Windows 10 can “legally” access all personal data, emails, and files to provide to law enforcement or government agencies. The highly anticipated operating system has turned into a massive NSA spying tool, which could obtain data from Bitcoin wallets and systems.

The Hard Fork: Will Bitcoin XT Take?

“So this is it. Here we are.” With that uninspired opening, Mike Hearn announced on August 15 a change to Bitcoin’s software that has the potential to generate a hard fork in the blockchain.

It would be his second. In March 2013, a tweak Hearn introduced to version 0.8 caused a discrepancy between miners running that version and the previous one. The fork was resolved quickly, so no harm done. Ironically, though it had to do with the size of blocks.

The difference between that fork and this one is that this time, it’s intentional. The first shot has been fired in a years-long standoff over what may seem like a finicky technical issue, but in fact has enormous implications for Bitcoin’s future: the maximum size of a block in the blockchain.

The difference between that fork and this one is that this time, it’s intentional. The first shot has been fired in a years-long standoff over what may seem like a finicky technical issue, but in fact has enormous implications for Bitcoin’s future: the maximum size of a block in the blockchain.

On a earlier post today +Carlo Malonzo had asked me, "Is it safe to hold on to my bitcoins? These news about forking is starting to bother me." I was going to respond directly in the comments back but then noticed this Nasdaq article so I figured I'd respond with a full post on it in case someone else had concerns or could help chime in with explanations.

I also want to remind everyone that I'm not a developer, accountant, attorney or even an economist. This is just strictly how I see things but you may have a different opinion. Before making any financial decisions remember that what I say shouldn't be your deciding factor because quite frankly I'm not that smart. That being said I love to read about bitcoin and personally I'm all in. Here are some of my observations.

When Carlo asks if it's safe that could hold many different meanings. I'm not 100% which way he means but I didn't want to ask so I could try to cover it from all the different angles.

The first thought is will the value of bitcoin be safe. This is by far the most uncertain of possible questions to me in the short term. In the long term I still believe that owning and understanding bitcoin is a great investment but in the short term I could imagine additional drops until consensus has been reached over how best to address the block size debate. Once we're all back in agreement on the network then I think we'll see the price begin to rise again.

If we're simply talking about the security of the bitcoin network then things could go a multitude of different ways all based on what type of rules are going to be chosen to support the network or even worse if consensus is not met. The security of bitcoin relies on the number of participants on the chain. If consensus isn't being met or if blocks become too large for miners to handle then that number will go down making it possible for a malicious actor to attack the network. I guess this one we will wait to see which BIP gains traction.

If he was referring to some how losing access to the bitcoins then things become a little more certain. As long as you have control of the private keys of your bitcoin address then you will have those coins regardless of the fork. In fact, if there becomes two separate chains, then you would have the ability to spend off either chain. This seemingly won't matter because whichever chain loses the battle will essentially become worthless but as long as your coins are in your wallet before the fork then it won't matter because you'll be on both chains with access to both the losing chain as well as the new version of what bitcoin will become. Obviously the value of bitcoin before and after may still change quite drastically though.

I hope that this can help and I encourage anyone with questions or suggestions on better understanding the fork to comment below. Even if I can't answer that question then I'm sure there's someone on Google+ that we can find that can give us a great explanation.___

That’s part of the appeal of MOOCs –students who prefer to learn at their own pace can follow the video lectures asynchronously, when they want, while students who can adapt their schedules to a course’s official timetable have the added benefit of semi-synchronous interaction with the instructors.

“To really understand what is special about Bitcoin, we need to understand how it works at a technical level,” notes the Coursera website. “After this course, you’ll know everything you need to be able to separate fact from fiction when reading claims about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. You’ll have the conceptual foundations you need to engineer secure software that interacts with the Bitcoin network. And you’ll be able to integrate ideas from Bitcoin in your own projects.”___

Everything You Need to Know about the Proposed Changes to the Bitcoin Block Size Cap

Bitcoin has entered into a new phase of its existence. Prominent developers Mike Hearn and Gavin Andresen have made changes to the alternative Bitcoin implementation Bitcoin XT, designed to fork Bitcoin’s blockchain in order to allow for bigger blocks.

Bitcoin users and – in particular – miners are, therefore, faced with a choice. Will they support Bitcoin XT and vote for an 8 megabyte block-size limit – doubling every other year? Or will they stick to Bitcoin Core with 1 megabyte blocks, limiting the Bitcoin network to a maximum of seven transactions per second?

Or at least that is the choice as it is often presented. In reality, the possibilities are not binary. At the time of publication of this article, two other Core developers have proposed three more Bitcoin ImprovementProposa... more »

Or at least that is the choice as it is often presented. In reality, the possibilities are not binary. At the time of publication of this article, two other Core developers have proposed three more Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs) to increase the block-size limit, and an even wider spectrum of ideas has been suggested on the development mailing list, forums, chat rooms and other media. This article presents an – undoubtedly incomplete – overview of these ideas, categorized in six types of solutions.___

CardCash Adds Bitcoin Payments for Gift Cards at Thousands of US Retail Stores

CardCash, an American online company that buys and sells discounted gift cards from thousands of national retailers, has begun to accept bitcoin payments. CardCash joins companies like Gyft and Fold that provide ways for Bitcoin users to interact with the massive gift card industry.

“We saw that bitcoin was getting a lot of traction and growing in legitimacy,” CardCash CEO Elliot Bohm said in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine, “but it was slow in getting acceptance in popular brands.” He pointed out that while consumers could use bitcoin to shop at Overstock and Dell, they couldn’t spend their bitcoin at Macy’s, for example.

“We can easily be the bridge,” said Bohm. “People can use bitcoin and save money at the same time.”

Last week I was out of town and had forgotten my main bank card back at home. Rather than have to drive back home, I was able to use bitcoin + Gyft to make sure I never went hungry. Knowing that there's now another option available only makes me more confident I can survive even when cash isn't available. ___

Winklevoss twins file paperwork to operate Gemini bitcoin exchange

Investors Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss earlier this week filed paperwork to operate a bitcoin exchange called Gemini for both individual and institutional investors in New York state, a spokeswoman said on Friday.

The twins, best known for accusing Facebook Inc founder Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea, want to make the digital currency mainstream in the United States.

The Winklevoss brothers filed an application on July 21 with the New York State Department of Financial Services to operate as a trust company.

It looks like Gemini may be close to fruition. Its amazing to see all of the infrastructure being laid in comparison to just a few short years ago.

10 Bitcoin Industry Sectors Providing Killer Apps

The Bitcoin faithful have long been in search of Bitcoin's “killer app," which can be defined as a use for bitcoin that cannot fail to drive adoption of the digital currency. With so many interesting and disruptive projects in the Bitcoin industry this list is restricted to applications that make use of bitcoin as a currency. Applications such as security exchanges, timestamping, Digital Rights Management, provably fair voting and asset tracking have been intentionally left out.

If the public can earn their first bitcoin from a service, it has the potential to drive mainstream adoption. Applications such as gray markets, paywall expediters and prediction markets have also been excluded, as they require the public to obtain bitcoins before they can use these application.

In much the same way the web browser could be considered the killer app of the internet, enabling large parts of the world to get online for the first time 20 years ago, most bitcoiners believe that use cases like those ones on the list below could do the same for bitcoin, allowing it to spread as fast and as far as the internet has.

Here are some of the coolest projects and services that will bring bitcoin to the masses. My personal feeling is that video game markets and video streaming will be two of the strongest sectors to make that push. ___

Due to the low volume, high volatility nature of bitcoin, traders who had to trade on the exchange would see the price rapidly change between when they started purchasing bitcoin to when they finalized their large purchase. According to itBit, benefits of the company’s new OTC trading desk include significant liquidity, same-day settlement, and no broker/trading fees.

This is another strong step towards ensuring that bitcoin isn't as volatile as it has been in the past and will help lead to becoming a strong, stable currency. It obviously isn't going to happen overnight but at least we are seeing the steps to the future start now. ___

Shop on Amazon? Save with bitcoin!

If you are like me and use Amazon for a lot of your purchases you could save up to 50% by using bitcoin through Purse.io on your next purchase.

What Purse.io does is match people looking to buy bitcoin with people who are looking to buy stuff from Amazon with bitcoin. If you only need a 5% discount they will immediately order it for you but if you want a higher discount then Purse will place it on the order book and wait for someone willing to make the order for you.

I've personally been using Purse now for a few months and have had nothing but good things to say about it. I usually mark my orders for a 35% discount and receive the order in about a week after placing it. Not bad for saving roughly a third of the price of what I ordered!

Bitcoin Industry Investments Already Surpassing 2014 Total

Investments into blockchain tech companies have already exceeded the 2014 total. Venture Capital investments into the Bitcoin industry last year was approximately $350 Million US. According to Pantera VC investment group it was their latest $20 Million fundraising round, for Mining hardware producer BitFury, that pushed Bitcoin business investment above the 2014 high water mark.

This amount doesn't include private investments nor grants, such as the $100,000 grant from the Gates foundation recently. Looking at the year on year statistics, the speed at which Bitcoin investments are growing is nothing short of top-notch, more than tripling each year so far.

In an interview with CoinDesk, the founder of iTech Capital – one of three firms behind BitFury's latest $20m round – revealed his company is eager to get in early with the fast-moving technology, even if it means spreading a little mischief.

"There are not that many things left in the Internet environment which you can call truly disruptive," he said, adding with a grin: "Please don't invest in the blockchain, because if you don't I will have more opportunities to do so."

If passed and signed by North Carolina Governor Pat McRory, the bill would mandate minimum net worth requirement of $250,000 for applicants. Businesses would also be required to post a surety bond of $150,000, an amount subject to change based on future transaction volume.

Looks like North Carolina has a few representatives who don't seem to fully understand bitcoin either.___

Jeff Garzik Submits Proposal to Double Bitcoin Block Size Limit

Bitcoin core developer Jeff Garzik has proposed increasing bitcoin's block size limit to 2MB.

Blocks – which are created every 10 minutes – currently hold only 1MB of transactions each. However, if the bitcoin network is to scale competitively it will need to exceed the three to seven transactions per second it currently supports.

With the 1MB limit looking to be reached within the next few months, Garzik says his proposal, BIP 102, is an emergency 'fallback' if consensus among bitcoin's stakeholders is not reached.

Blockchain Identity Startup ShoCard Raises $1.5 Million

ShoCard has raised $1.5m in funding from AME Cloud Ventures, Digital Currency Group, Enspire Capital and Morado Venture Partners.

The startup, which seeks to use the bitcoin blockchain as a way to authenticate identification, debuted in May at TechCrunch Disrupt NY. Its launch came amid a broader shift in focus among investors, who appear increasingly interested in harnessing the power of bitcoin's underlying distributed ledger for use cases beyond payments.

ShoCard views its solution as one that could disrupt the digital identity business, providing consumers with the means to hold a secure version of their personal information for use in e-commerce purchases, online banking logins and more.

Bitcoin Businesses Push for Relaxed Startup Rules in California

A group of bitcoin businesses have drafted a letter to members of California's Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee following the state's most recent update of its proposed regulation for bitcoin and digital currencies.

Signed by BitGo, Bitnet, Blockstream, Chain, Gem, Mirror and Xapo, the letter praises the Senate for its most recent changes to AB 1326, particularly its elimination of certain redundant licensing and modification of its definition of "virtual currency business".

Perhaps most notably, however, the startups called on California to go a step further before the regulation is ultimately passed by updating certain language and removing additional burdens from early-stage industry startups.

VC Firm Block26 Makes First Bitcoin Bet on Airbitz Wallet

Los Angeles-based venture capital firm Block26 has completed its first investment, contributing $450,000 to the ongoing seed round for bitcoin wallet provider Airbitz.

Launched in June, Block26 has indicated it plans to focus specifically on blockchain and digital currency ventures, contributing to seed to later-stage rounds.

Calling the funding the company's "first big announcement", Block26 principal Ni'coel Stark indicated that Airbitz is representative of the kind of companies in which her new venture firm is looking to invest.

Airbitz is currently my wallet of choice for storing bitcoin. Their simplistic approach to account security is amazing yet secure.

Why it makes sense for Reddit to decentralize, a la bitcoin

Imagine a version of Reddit that's fully peer-to-peer like BitTorrent, and which relies on small bitcoin transactions to function. That's something the company was actually considering last year, according to Ryan Charles, Reddit's former cryptocurrency engineer. He was hired by former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong to lead the decentralization project -- a dream that didn't last for long. After Reddit nabbed a huge $50 million funding round, Charles shifted over to a project focused on returning Reddit shares to its users via bitcoin (which was also killed off). He eventually left the company after just four months. Today, the idea of a fully P2P Reddit remains an intriguing one, especially since it would have helped the company avoid much of the turmoil it's currently seeing.

Once someone builds out the original version of Ryan Charles' dream Reddit, please let me know. I will be joining in a heartbeat. ___
