Burma is a country that is desperately poor. According to recent international estimates, 32% of the population live below the poverty line and, excluding a small rich elite, the rest are only just above it.signs of poverty everywhere in Rangoon - children with distended stomachs, people scavenging through rubbish and families buying coal to cook on open fires, owing to the intermittent and expensive electricity supply.
Outside the major cities, the situation is far worse.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) call for Burmese military to stop offensive against Kachin troops who are fighting for equal rights for Kachin people.

Especially, we would like to press here that Burmese President U Thein Sein had called for halting offensive in Kachin state but we are very sad to learn that there are increase fighting between Burmese military and Kachin army even after his presidential order.

We are very much concerned that as the results civilians; especially children, women and elderly are paying the price dearly. These disadvantaged people fleeing from the fighting between two armies are facing very difficult hardships. We would like to call for international community... more »

Today, UK Government launched the 2011 Foreign & Commonwealth Office Report on Human Rights and Democracy and Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) is honoured to be invited.

Myo Thein, Director of the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) attended the occasion representing Burma.

During the launch, Myo Thein has raised the question to the Foreign Secretary Mr William Hague regarding the situation in Kachin State and what efforts has the British Government been doing to stop fighting, to achieve peace and national reconciliation.

Mr Secretary said that British Government has been asking Burmese Government to cease hostilities and to make every effort to stop fighting and to achieve peace in Burma.

Burma: Cameron to offer Whitehall training if democracy is embraced
David Cameron will today offer Myanmar training from Whitehall civil servants, if it abandons military rule in favour of “a flowering democracy”.

If Myanmar commits to reforms, it will be given support on “peace and reconciliation” using Britain’s experience during the Northern Ireland ceasefire process.
The country will also be offered lessons on sound management of public finances, the rule of law and strengthening parliamentary processes.

Burmese civil servants and opposition politicians would be trained up by British officials on topics such as respect for human rights.
Mr Cameron would also like to initiate parliamentary exchanges betweenMPs from both countries, which have a shared colonial past.

Foreign investors can help restore Burma's long-decayed infrastructure and build factories to create jobs. Free trade and access to fertilizers will enable the country to again become a leading exporter of rice and other crops. Foreign investment will also help revive an educational system once the best and now the worst in Southeast Asia.

Ending sanctions will not itself sort out Burma's current economic mess, but it can create the right constituencies for reform. Progress for the Sein government's efforts is slow, partly because of the lack of well-trained people, and partly because of entrenched bureaucratic and crony networks who may not like reform. In a democracy, civil societygroups have respect for the law, for the rights of individuals, and for the rights of other groups to express their interests and opinions.
