Well, looks like I won't be using Google Talk anymore.  Too bad I don't know anyone else on federated servers, otherwise I'd just get a regular XMPP account somewhere else.

Google got my sympathy back in 2004 or something, when they were the first big player to embrace XMPP (Jabber). I used to run my own jabber server back then, and I was happy that I could communicate with people on Google talk.

Now we are about 10 years later. I don't host an own jabber server anymore. Google dumped rss. And now it dumps XMPP for its Google Talk client.

So far for open standards. I guess my usage of G+ will approach zero from now on.

Gtalk discontinued, why?

Sure, we understand they want to integrate the new Hangout tools, nothing wrong with that. But.... will it enable users to chat with other users like xmpp client software would have? Probably not, not with the same client software anyway. 

A few weeks ago they started disconnecting users with unknown clients. People using gtalk itself would be able to contact other users (using the xmpp protocol) but they said due to the amount of spam it was needed to limit incoming requests.

The current state is that in a few weeks or months people will not be able to talk to people using a google hangout account anymore using their normal clients since google will discontinue xmpp completely.

Cleaned up a lot of people I was following on twitter, hope it will result in a readable feed again without a lot of companies who's tweets are being forwarded or who will sell the account to spammers.

Hm. Upgrading my Lab workstation to Ubuntu 13.04 wasn't my best idea. Current performance measured in crashes per hour. Besides tons of other unusability. I think i should go back to 12.04 LTS which is at least 50% less unusable.

So funny, plus lets you click on the top bar, the feed only gets a few ones if you ways for the blue button or switch to another feed. Just press F5 and see new postings.

A small test. Currently I logged out of the hangouts. I am logged in using jabber to connect to gtalk. Is anyone seeing my presense in the hangouts now (as a user in the list)

Another bug. When people switch to a one column layout (More menu, at the bottom), the update of the number of new postings isn't show.

Suppose this was an agile development moment :-)

This is bad +google, tested the cpu usage of the hangout bar a bit more. On my asus eee 1501U with 4 Gb internal memory the load drops to somewhere around 0.5 when it is disabled. When I enable it the load goes up to around 3.x

Was this released to please the people at I/O ? Please fix this.

Hangout bar is using a lot of cpu!

Tested this for a while now and I can only conclude the new interface still needs more work. Disabling the hangouts (logout of them) makes my eee 1501U use a lot less cpu then logged in.

As for the new layout? I am getting the idea I am back in high school, that was in the seventies too.....

Zeg c# nerds, ja ik er er een paar hier...

Een jaar of 5 geleden heb ik onze dns interface geschreven. Frontend in c# waar beheerders hun mutaties in kunnen doen. Backend in perl op Linux :)

Nu hebben we een poos naar Powerdns gekeken. Op zich mooi spul maar er is geen GUI applicatie die lek is of gewoon zaken mist. Daarom gaan we nog maar even verder met bind en de huidige oplossing. Wel gaan we wat aanpassingen doorvoeren.

Weten jullie of er kant en klare modules zijn om dns entries te valideren? Ik wil die checks al doen bij het invoeren in onze GUI.

My Son was cleaning out old moving boxes from 5 years ago. They had been stored in the basement. Some of them contained vinyl records with some old music. He responded:

Now it is clear the feed thingy is a little bug I think it is time to start another discussion.

Almost two years ago I was invited by +Sascha Schumann after some posts on I believe Xing. I did already hear about plus but lacked an invite (Thanks Sascha). 

It was a little weird in the early days. I was used to other platforms. After a while it reminded me of usenet (long time ago). Just ask a question and start interacting. Features where added, some of them are used by me, some hardly. Hangouts are mostly ignored since I am using plus in the living room and other people would be disturbed. 

There is one thing I do wonder about. The plus to rate a posting or comment. Although I tend to plus comments and postings too I try to keep it limited to those items I really like. I did notice some people, mostly woman, tend to plus everything :-)
