Marilyn Fenn3,010Now that my Art Motherlode circle has hit 500 people, it's time to share (and start a new one?). This circle includes all pigment artists, illustrators, sculptors, curators, art writers, gallery owners, and art pages that I have circled so far (at least in this circle; there may be some unintentional omissions). I have tried to include only those who post, though no guarantees. If I left you out and you think you belong in my next incarnation of this circle, please be sure to let me know in the comments. Enjoy! :D2011-12-19 21:21:18500647
Marilyn Fenn145Thought I'd share my circle of traditional media visual artist's pages; these are primarily painters, sculptors and a few illustrators. Feel free to share, and let me know if you have a page about your traditional media art that you'd like me to add to this circle.2011-11-17 03:22:5723515

A Mini Review of Some Art Sales Sites

A comment of mine went long, so I thought I'd expand it even further and post it as a post here. This is just one person's mini-review of a number of art "sales" sites that I've tried, and other options for selling artwork. This review is primarily directed at other artists wanting to sell their work (just so you know). Links included.

How about you: what online sites do you feel are most worth your investment of time and effort, and even money?

ArtsyHome

I recently joined ArtsyHome (early December), where I've posted some of my latest oil paintings--both abstracts and the little toy still lifes. ArtsyHome sells basically the same type of stuff that is sold on Etsy, but supposedly, ArtsyHome does the marketing for you. I can't say that I've seen much marketing beyond... more »

December Sale, Day Twenty-Eight: Prints of Early Figurative Pastel Drawing, "Glasnost?"

Today's image is a print made from a very early pastel drawing called "Glasnost?"  I imagined this image or saw it in my sleep or in that in-between waking state one night, and got up the next day and starting drawing it.  I found "models" for the two men in magazines.

This was during the period of Glasnost, or increased openness in the government, called for by USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev in the late 1980's.  Having grown up during part of the cold war and also being of Lithuanian descent, at the time, I was somewhat skeptical of the transparency reportedly desired by Gorbachev.

I have 5 prints left of this image; one of them is framed. The unframed versions come with free shipping.

December Sale, Day Twenty-Seven: Aerial Landscape Prints

For those of you flying to visit family and friends this week, this may be a familiar sight: an aerial view of a body of water seen from the window of an airplane.  Possibly my most impressionistic painting, I painted the original in art school from a sketch on an airplane napkin.  I thought the scene was so beautiful, with wispy clouds above, and the reflection of the sunset splayed across the water.

I have about 6 prints left of this image; one of them is framed.  The unframed versions come with free shipping.

See them on the sale page of my shop site; all at 20% off through December 31st: http://marilynfenn.com/shop/artwork-on-sale/

December Sale, Day Twenty-Six: More Prints of Prismism Paintings

After a two day break for Christmas, I'm back with 3 prints of paintings from my Prismism days (L-R): Marilyn's Deer #2, Etruscan Horse, and Marilyn's Deer.  I don't paint this way anymore, but I thoroughly enjoyed this process for a few years.  And I still have a few framed and unframed prints available of these images.  The unframed versions come with free shipping.  All three images are available framed in metal frames, and the two deer paintings also have a wood-framed version available.

December Sale, Day Twenty-Three: Boxes of Art Cards

When I used to do booth-type art shows, I printed up some greeting cards of some of my paintings and offered them as boxed sets with eight cards per set.  I have 4 sets left from those days long ago.  The cards are beautiful -- printed with giclée inks on thick 100% rag, acid-free Museo fine art paper, with blank insides and matching envelopes.  They come in a gift box wrapped with a gold ribbon, and are 20% off through Dec. 31, 2012.  I have 2 sets of Landscape #1, 1 set of Abstract #2, and 1 set of Landscape #2 still available.

It's time again for the Weekend Art Marketplace.  Click on the hashtag #weekendartmarketplace  to see all the art being offered, or to participate, share this event as well as one of your pieces and artwork by another artist.

Calling Photographers and Artists:  Join us at the Weekend Art Marketplace.

If you’ve posted in the marketplace already, just read the (NEW) section.  If you’re a first-timer here, please take a few minutes to read the whole post.  THANKS!

(NEW) ->  New this week.

The marketplace will be open regular hours this weekend.  Friday 6PM (your local time) to Sunday 6PM (your local time).

Until the end of the year, please also use the following tags when you post.   #Christmas   #ChristmasGift .  These should be popular and should draw extra attention to your work and the Marketplace.

PLEASE!  It’s very important to share this event.  You can either use the “Invite” function within this event, or share this event to your circles.

(NEW) ->  End of the NEW section.
……………………………………………………………………

Just what is Weekend Art Marketplace?

This weekend, December 21 - 23, and every weekend thereafter, is the Weekend Art Marketplace.  So what is it?  It’s a time where G+ artists share their art with a worldwide G+ audience, and G+ art buyers can see what the community has to offer.

Ooh, ooh, I’m an artist.  Can I participate?

Yes, you sure can!

See the Rules for Marketplace Participation below.

What kind of art is suitable for the marketplace?

Photography, Drawings, Digital Art, Paintings, Wood Carvings, Music, Sketches, Caricatures, Cartoons, Origami, Poetry, Books, and no doubt others.  It’s all good!

Why participate in this marketplace?

Look at it this way.  If you’re not in a marketplace, you’re a lone seller on an empty side street.  When you join up with other artists in a marketplace, you’re in a big store on the main highway, where 100 times more people can view your work.  Is that enough of a reason?

So, how do I participate?

To list an item in the marketplace, do this:

• Get the URL you want to display from your personal website, or from the website you sell from, whether it’s Zenfolio, Smugmug, FineArtAmerica, or another.
• Go to Google Plus, go to your “Share what’s new” box.  Click the link icon, paste in the URL from step one.  Your artwork should display in the photo area.  Or for a better viewing experience, upload a larger version of the photo from the photo link.  Don’t forget to put the website address in the G+ post!
• If possible, just give your audience a bit more information about your art.  Information the viewer might find useful or interesting.  What are they seeing?  What was your inspiration?
• Feel free to create a Limited Time Promotion for your Google Plus viewers.
• Add the tag #WeekendArtMarketplace
• Add +Matt Shalvatis to your circles.  My name is for future updates and other features, like shared circles.

Rules for Market Participation.

• Remember that you are not selling here on Google Plus; you must link to another website where you sell your work.
• If you have less than 50,000 followers here on Google Plus, you can post five items per weekend.  **
• If you have between 50,000 and 100,000 followers here on Google Plus, you can post two items per weekend.  **
• If you have more than 100,000 followers here on Google Plus, you can post one item per weekend.  **
• Posting hours are 6 PM your local time Friday to 6 PM your local time Sunday (48 hours).
• Please use the tag #WeekendArtMarketplace  on all posted items.  This is how everybody can find you and the market!
• Please use this tag only on weekends, on items posted within the 48 hour window.
• Don’t post multiple items at once.  Spread them out over the 48 hours.
• You must +1 and share the weekly Marketplace announcements and shared circles.
• To gain greater visibility for the marketplace, please share 1 item from someone else for every item you post.
• The item listed on your G+ post must link to the item for sale, not something else.
• Be helpful to other sellers and to visitors.

**  There are different posting privileges because we want to level the playing field here for everybody! ___It's time again for the Weekend Art Marketplace.  Click on the hashtag #weekendartmarketplace  to see all the art being offered, or to participate, share this event as well as one of your pieces and artwork by another artist.

It's Not the End of the World

Are we all still here?  Well, I know I am.  If you're reading this, then the world didn't end for you, either.  Yay!  :)   To celebrate the continuation of life on our little planet, I offer this print of one of my earliest pastel drawings.

One night many years ago I was having a discussion with a friend about Indian dream sharing, and one of the supposed lessons from this Indian tribe was to ask for a gift in your dreams.  That night, I had a dream in which I found myself in the clouds among so many other heads.  In the dream, I told myself "remember to ask for a gift" and suddenly -- "whoosh" -- I was flying through the clouds, past the heads, being pulled at great speed toward the sun!  It was quite exhilarating!

At the time, I was just learning to draw, and computer animation didn't exist yet (as far as I know).  I couldn't figure out how to express that physical sense of flying, so I settled for one frame.  And this is it.  I've always been rather happy with how it turned out.

I have 4 prints available from this pastel drawing; all are 20% off and shipping is FREE through Dec. 31, 2012.

End of the World Sale

a.k.a. December Sale, Day Twenty: Prints of the Harmonic Convergence at Enchanted Rock

On August 16th and 17th, 1987, I attended the Harmonic Convergence happening at Enchanted Rock near Fredericksburg, Texas.  The Harmonic Convergence was to be the “world's first globally synchronized meditation"¹ to promote world peace.  The date was chosen due to an unusual alignment of  the Sun, Moon and six of our solar system's planets.

The hope was to gather 144,000 people in various power centers across the world  “where the spiritual energy was held to be particularly strong,"² and we would all meditate simultaneously.  Enchanted Rock is a very special place in central Texas, and as it was considered to be the nearest power center, I traveled there with a number of other peace-lovers to greet the sunrise and meditate.

According to Wikipedia, "the Harmonic Convergence also began the final 25-year countdown to the end of the Mayan Long Count in 2012, which would be the so-called end of history and the beginning of a new 5,125-year cycle."³

Anyway, whatever you may think about the end of the Mayan Calendar, the trip to Enchanted Rock was a beautiful and very spiritual experience.  I took some photographs while there, which I later used as source material for a few paintings.  This painting, oddly enough titled "Enchanted Rock," has long been one of my very favorite landscape paintings.

I offer it for sale in the spirit of peace and understanding...or just to make a few bucks.

December Sale, Day Nineteen: Set of Four Poppy Prints

Today I am offering a set of four prints of some of my favorite encaustic paintings.  These have been fairly popular; the originals have sold, and could have sold more than once, and I've sold multiple copies of the prints.  I discovered that, in an edition limited to 25, I still have the #1 print of each of these paintings, and for the next week and a half, these prints are available at 20% off the regular price.

These are large unmatted prints (a 12" x 12" image on a 14" x 13" paper), and the last ones currently available in the whole set of four (I also have 3 of the 4 available mounted on 2" deep boxes).  Shipping is FREE on the unframed, unmounted prints, through Dec. 31, 2012.

Today's sale items are prints of another Italian landscape painting, "Hillside View at Giogalto.”  This painting was done in the studio based on one of the four paintings done on location in a beautiful hilltop villa in Tuscany.  The original painting for this print was 48" x 36" in oil on canvas.

December Sale, Day Seventeen: Italian Landscape Prints

The sale items for Monday the 17th are prints of the painting "Rain Coming, Giogalto," one of four paintings done on location in a beautiful hilltop villa in Tuscany.  This one was from the porch where we ate our lunch, and was painted over several days.  During the final painting session, rain was starting to roll into the valley, and I tried to I capture the sense of that in this painting.

I only have 6 prints currently available: one is framed, and the others are large and small matted and unmatted prints.  Each print is 20% off, and shipping is FREE on all the unframed prints, thus saving you an additional $15.00.  Through Dec. 31, 2012.

I'm so saddened by the deaths of the little children and teachers in Connecticut, that I just don't feel like marketing artwork is the right thing to do today.

So a little moratorium and silence for those who lost their loved ones.  So sad.

December Sale, Day Thirteen: Musician Paintings as Prints

I probably should have posted these yesterday...1-2, 1-2, 1-2.   ;-)   My musician paintings, or rather prints made from my musician paintings:

· One Flight Down
· Chris & Brad at Donn’s
· Surprise, Surprise

These are the last three paintings done in this style -- a style a friend of mine called "prismism."  Actually, it turns out that Lyonel Feininger "developed “Prism-ism,” a distinctive style with broken geometric planes that was linked formally to Orphism (developed by Robert Delaunay) and Italian Futurism, yet retained a characteristic lyricism."  (from The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts page on Feininger).

Well, I'm not sure that mine are so lyrical, but they represent the culmination of working in this style for me — at least, intentionally.

Each painting was developed from sketches on paper or bar napkins.  The two drummer paintings were from a Norah Jones show at The Backyard in Austin (btw, did you know Norah Jones' father is Ravi Shankar?).  The piano player and bass player are Chris Gage and Brad Fordham playing at Donn's Depot, a wonderful funky old bar made from train cars that is an Austin institution, and a great place to dance or sit while enjoying great local music over a few brewskies.  The lovely chanteuse, Christina Albert, was with them, as well as the great drummer, Lisa Pankratz -- a couple of happy couples.

The prints are available matted or unmatted in various sizes, and also framed, all at 20% off.

They are all on the sale page on on my shop site: http://marilynfenn.com/shop/artwork-on-sale/___

December Sale, Day Twelve: Three 12 x 12 Encaustic Paintings for 12-12-12

Yes, I'm going to shamelessly exploit the whole 12-12-12 thing by offering three 12" x 12" encaustic paintings on panel for the ridiculously low price of 12² or $144 each.  That's almost 62% off!

But of course, there's a catch!   This offer on these 3 paintings is good only through December 21st, 2012!   So if the world ends that day -- well, you won't need them anyway, and I won't need the money.  But if doesn't, you can enjoy one or all three of these paintings for years to come.

The paintings are (L-R):

All the Way from Africa
Nebulous Nebula
Field of Artists' Dreams

Did I mention this is sort of a tryptych?

December Sale, Day Eleven: Mini Paintings with Orange Spheres

I totally love these little paintings.  Can you see the common element (or did the title give it away)?   ;-)

These are from early 2009, and I did a whole little wall of these 6" x 6" paintings.  Some are oil on canvas, some are acrylic on paper mounted a little wood cradled panel.  They all look really great together.

Anyway, these three are 20% off for the rest of the year, plus $15.00 shipping for one, and $2.00 more for each additional painting of this size shipped simultaneously.  The paintings are (L-R):

SPROING!!!
Orange Crush

December Sale, Day Ten: Fractal Masks

Today I'm offering another very early surrealistic collage piece of mine, "Fractal Masks".  The original was a 36" x 24" collage with oil pastel.  The image is full of masked faces, large and small, and as you can see from these small images, the whole image reads as a mask or face as well (hence, the title).  It is now available as a giclée print in two sizes:

Large matted and framed or unmatted print
Small matted or unmatted print
There are only 4 total prints available, each is 20% off the regular price through the end of this month.  The unframed prints ship for FREE.

December Sale, Day Five: Three Abstract Paintings

Each painting is 12" x 12" on a 1.5" deep gallery-wrapped canvas with painted edges.  They are ready to hang with a wire and bumpers on the back, so no framing is needed (though they can be framed, if you choose).  The paintings are (L-R):

Announcing My Winter Sale - 20% Off Select Items

I have a treasure trove of oldies but goodies as well as some newer artwork that I will be putting on sale starting tomorrow.  Here’s how it’s going to work:  the sale will include select giclée prints, original paintings and works on paper, and I will be announcing at least one new item on sale each day from Dec. 1st through Dec. 31st.

I will be announcing these from my art page on Google Plus (I'll probably also post them occasionally -- if not daily -- on my personal profile).

The giclée prints are available in a variety of sizes, but I only have 1 or 2 prints of each image per size, and won't be able to print anymore this year, so when they're gone, they're gone (for this year anyway).

Oops; I just noticed I haven't posted anything on my art page (this page) in months!  So I'll be posting new work every day for while...

Here's a recent painting, still available in my shop. This was done for a show this summer to benefit Urban Patchwork, an Austin area non-profit urban garden initiative.  More representational than my usual stuff, at least in part --  I love the abstract parts a lot, too.  :)

Whoa! I haven't posted anything on my art page in a long time! So, to the 300+ people who added me to your circles since I last checked in, I've added you back. Thank you so much, and I look forward to getting to know you! :)

I've also added a few new paintings to my art site (two of which have already sold), which you can see here:

http://marilynfenn.com/art/abstracts/

I will try and be more mindful of this aspect of my G+ presence! I just got a bit overwhelmed with an exhibition and other work there for awhile! Cheers!

In December, I decided to separate my blog and shop from the main art site. I now have one site just for my new art; a second site for my art blog and other related information, and a third site just for the sale of my artwork. Each site links to both of the others at the very bottom of each page, in the little footer links. Here are the links:

The Art Site: http://marilynfenn.com/

The Shop: http://marilynfenn.com/shop/

I wrote a blog post, explaining it further, should you want to know: http://marilynfenn.com/continued/new-art-site-design-new-blog-location-and-new-online-shop/

New Site for My Art Shop

I am in the process of splitting my art site into 3 parts:

1. my main art site: streamlined design, the cream of the crop and most recent work, and the most basic artist info;

2. my blog, color exercises, extensive links to other artists, and all the other non-essential, but nice-to-have stuff that I've been collecting and organizing for years (in other words, too much work to simply abandon, and too cool to lose!), plus I'll continue blogging from there; and

3. all my art and art prints for sale.

I'm thrilled and relieved to announce that part 3 of 3--the shop--is complete! Whew! Well, of course, I will continue to add new work to it, and some of the better older work, too--the stuff I've finally decided to let go of, and some giclee prints.

I completely rebuilt the Shop using a different e-commerce solution (eShop instead of the quite buggy wp-ecommerce), and I think it's much better! I think I crossed all the t's and dotted all the i's, but if you find something wonky or weird, feel free to let me know. :)

The other 2 parts are close to done, too. I can't wait until I am completely done! (Pant, pant!)

Anyway, in case you had made note of my previous shop URL, please note it has changed. It is now: http://marilynfenn.com/shop/

And for a few more days (or hours, if I'm lucky and alarmingly brilliant), you can still access it from the main site: the "Shop" button on http://marilynfenn.com/

(apologies if you saw this already on my personal profile)___

A Mini Review of Some Art Sales Sites

A comment of mine went long, so I thought I'd expand it even further and post it as a post here. This is just one person's mini-review of a number of art "sales" sites that I've tried, and other options for selling artwork. This review is primarily directed at other artists wanting to sell their work (just so you know). Links included.

How about you: what online sites do you feel are most worth your investment of time and effort, and even money?

I recently joined ArtsyHome (early December), where I've posted some of my latest oil paintings--both abstracts and the little toy still lifes. ArtsyHome

I recently joined ArtsyHome (early December), where I've posted some of my latest oil paintings--both abstracts and the little toy still lifes. ArtsyHome sells basically the same type of stuff that is sold on Etsy, but supposedly, ArtsyHome does the marketing for you. I can't say that I've seen much marketing beyond what is built into their site. I signed up for their newsletter to see how they market. Mid-December, I got one email directed at artists selling their work, but no actual newsletters marketing the work. Has anyone else gotten a newsletter?

Most of my paintings there have received between 300-400 views, and the one piece that was on the front page for awhile has gotten over 1200 views. However, I haven't seen much movement in the number of views per piece for a couple of weeks (I think). I also haven't posted any new work in awhile, so I should at least do that!

You can choose to have a commission-based page on ArtsyHome (25%), which is what I chose (so far), or pay a monthly fee of $15.00 for more exposure.

Here's my page on ArtsyHome: http://www.artsyhome.com/author/marilynfenn/

Zatista

Yesterday, I was curated into Zatista. Yes, you have to apply and be accepted, so that's actually good. Less junk than on Etsy. They sell only wall art, no 3D stuff, no jewelry, hats or knick-knacks. For that reason alone, it sounds like a promising site. I don't see that they show the artist the number of views that one's work gets, though, but the site is nicely organized, and I like their blog. Looks very interesting. We'll see how it goes. It is commission-based (30%).

Here's my page on Zatista: https://www.zatista.com/store/index/Marilyn-Fenn-Paintings

DailyPaintWorks

DailyPaintWorks is a very nice site, where they show new work on the front page daily. Most of the work tends to be tiny representational still life and landscape paintings, but they also have a small smattering of abstract work. I had been putting works on DailyPaintWorks for a few months, especially when I was painting a new small still life painting every day or two. However, as each piece is only on the front page for a day, each piece only got maybe 20-30 views. Initially, it was good for motivating me to paint every day, but in the end, at $13.00 month, I began to feel it was a waste of money, especially once my paintings got larger, more abstract and started taking longer than a day or two to paint. I still have a page there, but as I am no longer paying the monthly fee, my artwork has been removed.

Here's is my page (what's left of it) on DailyPaintWorks: http://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/mfenn-2167

Etsy

Well, I joined Etsy 3 years ago, and have been posting work there that whole time. As each listing only costs 20 cents to list and stays listed for several months, it seemed like a reasonably priced alternative to Ebay. My shop has been "favorited" by a few hundred folks, lots of my work has been included in "Treasuries." I've created a few treasuries myself. I actually spent a lot of time last year trying to work the Etsy system. I now feel like, for my artwork, it was a waste of time. Wish I'd spent those hours painting instead. YMMV.

I read yesterday that the average price per item on Etsy is $19.00; the artists I know who sell there have their paintings way underpriced, and I have decided I'm not doing that anymore. Once my last piece expires on Etsy, that's it; I'm done there (I think).

Other Sites

I was an early adopter of posting my portfolio on other art sites. You can read a review of each of these here: http://marilynfenndesign.com/five-free-online-artist-portfolio-sites/ I wrote this 3 years ago, so...things have changed, in many of these cases. Suffice it to say, I haven't sold anything through any of these sites, except for a print through FineArtAmerica. I did have some inquiries from some of them early on; nothing much lately. I've only just started to update my portfolios there, however.

You can visit my portfolios at these sites here:

d-Art: http://dart.fine-art.com/dGallery.asp?i=27721 AbsoluteArts.com: http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/m/marilynfenn/
MyArtSpace, which seems to have gone defunct in the past couple weeks
Rtist: http://rtist.com/MarilynFenn
SaatchiOnline: http://www.saatchionline.com/yiotta42 (OK, I really need to update this page!).

G+

As for which site gives you the highest number of views per painting, I haven't seen anything that beats G+! Whether those views will turn into sales, who knows? I almost sold a piece, but it hasn't happened after all. To see the number of views any of your artworks has gotten, log into your Picasa account, and check the individual photo. It seems to take a day or two to register any views. After awhile, though, you'll see the number tick up to the several hundreds or even in the thousands. FWIW. :)

My G+ personal profile: https://plus.google.com/106237697616959334118
My G+ Art Page profile (this page): https://plus.google.com/b/105559911769597064680/

Facebook

I've actually generated most sales online recently through Facebook on my personal page, where my friends and family seem to be interested in my work. I also have a Page for my Art there, which gets cross-posted to my personal page. My Blog automatically posts to both my Art page and my personal page, so in reality, I don't know which one is generating my sales there. <rolleyes>

My Facebook Art Page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Marilyn-Fenn/64409263974

My Website

On my own art website, I sell to people I don't know as well as to people I do know. This still seems to be my best venue for generating online sales of my art. I've had my site since 2002, and added the blog in maybe 2009. I should blog once a week, but I don't seem to have quite that much to say. I add my new art almost as soon as the new photo has been shot and color-corrected. I have an e-commerce shop on there, which is a little twitchy. I'm thinking of splitting this site into two sites: one, a more professional presentation with just the art, about pages, news and contact; and the other with the blog, shop, links, color exercises and all the extraneous stuff.

For now, here's the whole kit and kaboodle (as my mom would have said): http://marilynfenn.com/

Art Shows

Finally, I do OK selling my work in person at local shows. I've been taking a break froming doing too many of those for the past year, though, and I'm not sure how many I want to participate in this year.

I want to do minimal marketing, and focus mostly just on painting. I keep telling myself that someday, if I keep at it, my work will be so awesome that people will feel compelled to own one. I don't feel I'm there yet. Anyway, I hate the whole marketing/money thing, but I do feel the more opportunities you have to get more eyes on your work, the better your chances of finding new homes for some of them is. Adding 10-20 pieces to a few art sites every so often isn't that much trouble, really.

What do you think?___

I've just uploaded a few of my recent paintings there. You can see my art and profile at: https://www.zatista.com/store/artist_profile/items/7379/Marilyn-Fenn-Paintings -- and buy a painting while you're there! ;)

Just noticed I opened my Etsy shop on this day 3 years ago! No one has ever purchased anything from me there, so I'm pretty sure no one ever will. Time to let it fade away.
