There's a difference between how Apple, a hardware manufacturer, treats design and how Facebook treats design. While, Apple works with imaginative leaps and big risks, Facebook works with continuous improvement, tinkering and small changes. While the continuous changes model works well for a software company and is able to rapidly adapt to in a very fast changing environment, the downside is it becomes unreliable as a platform that others (especially news organizations) rely on.

Why do IT professionals find it so hard to trust cloud platforms? Gap between being able to touch and feel your servers and the intangible cloud, out of reach and never seen? Whatever it is, there is a marketing opportunity here.

What I understand from the article is that Smartphones are on track to make a difference in the lives of many more people than the TV or Computer. And platforms like Android which is appealing to manufacturers of low-cost smartphones will matter more in the very near future (~5 years).

I did a long interview with George Dyson in the current Wired. We discuss the origins of software, and how a small band of geniuses 60 years ago made the system we are still using today. The two most powerful technologies of the 20th century—the nuclear bomb and the computer—were invented at the same time and by the same group of young people. But while the history of the Manhattan Project has been well told, the origin of the computer is relatively unknown.

Me: Because your father, Freeman Dyson, worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, you grew up around folks who were building one of the first computers. Was that cool?

George Dyson: The institute was a pretty boring place, full of theoreticians writing papers. But in a building far away from everyone else, some engineers were building a computer, one of the first to have a fully electronic random-accessmem... more »

An often overlooked insight in being an influencer in social media: “At the end of the day you are expected to lead. You cannot be whipsawed back and forth by how your audience feels. Ironically, if you follow what they tell you, they won’t like you soon enough. “ - Stephan Pastis

Makes sense since at least the US fb market is saturated now. Others will soon follow, and it makes sense to start generating revenues.

Kobo is a very interesting low cost device. I've seen two people carry kobos in this part of the world, and I've yet to see an Amazon Kindle. The Kindle seems to be built for a very specific demographic - Western Europe & the US, while the Kobo seems to be a global device.

Wow! This is so rich and informative I'd have to read this several times. Here's a few takeaways -

"...as more of what we design is jacked into our social network the option of whether to use, or opt-into a technology or service becomes one of opting into or out of society ..."

"... There are many reasons why a dedicated product for illiterate consumers was not appropriate at that time: the social stigma associated with buying a device that was seen as being for “disadvantaged” consumers would be a disincentive to purchase — they wanted a device like “everyone else” because they aspired to be treated like “everyone else”

What about the value of the content? Foursquare's 'content' is spatially and temporally restricted, hence it's value outside that zone is most often negligible. So it seems fair to me to compare value to users as well.
