NASA2,462,294Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008329

Jessica Northey1,833,451Join @115263347034954886450  Wednesday October 24th starting 5pm PT! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=eDGGFu-Ok9w We'll be talking about Americana and folk music with @115355394914388821672, @101855386466968203040, @102002299339025067376, @107291158434082397409 as well as @111956683258824284439  We'll talk about what Americana music is and some performances showing difference styles! A few weeks ago, I wrote about the never-ending debate about the definition of Country Music. As tough as that is, it’s nothing compared to how one defines the term “Americana.”  In writing about this topic, I’m going to be (gasp!) honest about my thoughts – as they were when you first started hearing the term to describe a musical genre. There were several artists who had been favorites of the Country genre who no longer found themselves played on mainstream radio. Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris were two examples of this. Crowell had a string of top tens from 1988-1992, but all of a sudden his name disappeared from radio playlists. The same happened to Emmylou Harris following her 1988 top ten “Heartbreak Hill.” Critics of the musical format said it was that Country Music had changed – and gotten more pop and rock influenced. That is true – but, only halfway. If you listen to some of Harris’s post 1992 work, as well as Crowell’s, you’ll find some different sounds and subject matter that they weren’t doing earlier. That’s not saying they weren’t doing great music – but it WAS different than their own music that was played on top-40 Country radio just a few years earlier. So, (at least in my mind), that’s how the Americana format was born– as a place for acts who weren’t getting the commercial reception that they once had. Ok, I know I just offended several of my friends with that – but that’s my opinion. I never said that the music was bad, just different. Twenty years later, the definition of Americana is not that simple in my mind. One of the best albums of late in the format is Radney Foster’s current album, DEL RIO, TEXAS REVISITED: UNPLUGGED AND LONESOME , is a stunning re-take on his classic 1992 album DEL RIO, TEXAS 1959. The songs are the same that were radio hits back in the early 1990s. They were Country then, what changed? When artists like Patty Loveless release new projects, they get a warmer reception in the Americana format than Country – and this is by an artist that is a former CMA Female Vocalist of the Year. Granted, she wasn’t cutting Bluegrass music back in 1988 as her last album was, but the voice is still as pure and stunning as ever. But, Americana reaches far beyond the Country format. There’s tinges of Blues, Rock, Gospel, and Bluegrass that are sprinkled throughout. So, is Americana “anything outside of the mainstream?” I don’t know. The Civil Wars, a critical favorite, recently collaborated with Taylor Swift on “Safe and Sound.” What do you call that?  Part of my continuing education concerning “Americana” Americana & Folk Music Twangout with Twang Nation's Baron Lane, Joe Whyte, Heather Fay and Ryan Van Sickle.2012-10-25 02:00:0046

FURY

I finally got the chance to see Fury this weekend and I was glad I did. Though uneven in quite a few parts and absolutely riding a hole-filled plot, I still found the entire film compelling. It felt to me like an amped-up version of the first 25 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, albeit with a mind-boggling body count, extreme graphic gore and violence, and a film that surely attempts to own the moniker, "War Is Hell."

But man, the actors' performances of this scrappy tank crew are incredible. Pitt is classic as always. Jon Bernthal eats scenes like breakfast cereal. Michael Peña is the quiet anchor. Shia LaBeouf will astound you. He really is usually so uneven in his performances - we're never quiet sure which Shia will show up on any given project. But he truly is incredible in his role here.

But no one is more astounding than Logan... more »

Wire Sculptures by Richard Stainthorp Captures Movement Beautfully

It seems strange, but cold, thin wires are one of the best materials when an artist wants to represent the human form.

These elegant and fluid wire sculptures by Richard Stainthorp, an artist based in Richmond in the U.K., seem like dancers or woodland spirits captured in mid-stride.

Wires are perfect for imitating the muscles and curves that we associate with the human body.

Dodge Charger: Vrooom!

The Dodge Charger is an American automobile whose current version is manufactured in Canada by Dodge. First used on a show car in 1964, there have been several different production vehicles, built on three different platforms and sizes, all bearing the Charger nameplate.

The Charger nameplate has been used with subcompact hatchbacks, full-sized sedans, and personal luxury coupes.

Once again, a beautiful video to get my eyes wet (it's the weather!). So, apparently, +Blaine Hall and I will be having our 10th anniversary next March.

Damn, how time flies. I thought it was 7 or 8. I want to make sure he's happy as hell when we do get married (we had a hiccup last weekend when I was all ready to seal the deal -- ask him 'bout that).

So this video was great to see and h/t to +Casey McKinnon for this! Awesome!

The World's First Nuclear Submarine Travels Under the North Pole On This Day in 1958!

On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The world’s first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. It then steamed on to Iceland, pioneering a new and shorter route from the Pacific to the Atlantic and Europe.

The USS Nautilus was constructed under the direction of U.S. Navy Captain Hyman G. Rickover, a brilliant Russian-born engineer who joined the U.S. atomic program in 1946. In 1947, he was put in charge of the navy’s nuclear-propulsion program and began work on an atomic submarine.

Regarded as a fanatic by his detractors, Rickover succeeded in developing and delivering the world’s first nuclear submarine years ahead of schedule. In 1952, the Nautilus’ keel was laid by President Harry S. Truman, and on January 21, 1954, first lady Mamie Eisenhower broke a bottle of champagne across its bow as it was launched into the Thames River at Groton, Connecticut. Commissioned on September 30, 1954, it first ran under nuclear power on the morning of January 17, 1955.

Much larger than the diesel-electric submarines that preceded it, the Nautilus stretched 319 feet and displaced 3,180 tons. It could remain submerged for almost unlimited periods because its atomic engine needed no air and only a very small quantity of nuclear fuel. The uranium-powered nuclear reactor produced steam that drove propulsion turbines, allowing the Nautilus to travel underwater at speeds in excess of 20 knots.

In its early years of service, the USS Nautilus broke numerous submarine travel records and on July 23, 1958, departed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on “Operation Northwest Passage”–the first crossing of the North Pole by submarine. There were 116 men aboard for this historic voyage, including Commander William R. Anderson, 111 officers and crew, and four civilian scientists.

The Nautilus steamed north through the Bering Strait and did not surface until it reached Point Barrow, Alaska, in the Beaufort Sea, though it did send its periscope up once off the Diomedes Islands, between Alaska and Siberia, to check for radar bearings. On August 1, the submarine left the north coast of Alaska and dove under the Arctic ice cap.

The submarine traveled at a depth of about 500 feet, and the ice cap above varied in thickness from 10 to 50 feet, with the midnight sun of the Arctic shining in varying degrees through the blue ice. At 11:15 p.m. EDT on August 3, 1958, Commander Anderson announced to his crew:

“For the world, our country, and the Navy–the North Pole.” The Nautilus passed under the geographic North Pole without pausing. The submarine next surfaced in the Greenland Sea between Spitzbergen and Greenland on August 5. Two days later, it ended its historic journey at Iceland. For the command during the historic journey, President Dwight D. Eisenhower decorated Anderson with the Legion of Merit.

After a career spanning 25 years and almost 500,000 miles steamed, the Nautilus was decommissioned on March 3, 1980. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982, the world’s first nuclear submarine went on exhibit in 1986 as the Historic Ship Nautilus at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut.

The Best Lakes You've Ever Visited

Can you name some of your favorites? Some of the best you've visited around the world?

For me, I spent every summer on Lake Delhi in Iowa; I have a ton of great memories at one of the most magnificent Alpine lakes in the world, Lake Tahoe, and I spent some years living on Big Bear Lake in California. But there are hundreds more I remember from my travels.

What are your favourite lakes, why, and where are they? What stories do you have to go along with your visits?

Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued & Starring Adam West

Today, I had a blast watching two really different docs. Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued and Starring Adam West. I like each one for different reasons: one  because of my love of music, and the other because of the talent of a great actor.

I liked how each doc really dived into storytelling. What struck me about the Dylan one was the amazing way these musicians banded together to put a new spin on long lost tunes. I couldn't stop watching it. And the West doc? He's a funny guy with a long, mixed career, and you get a great sense about how he's stayed relevant so long in Hollywood.

LOST SONGS: THE BASEMENT TAPES CONTINUED

A documentary that goes behind the scenes with some of today's most talented songwriters as they make new music based on long-lost, newly discovered lyrics from Bob Dylan's legendary Basement Tapes sessions. T Bone Burnett brings Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Marcus Mumford together in a dramatic two-week studio session in the basement of Capitol Records. Features an exclusive interview with Bob Dylan. Directed by Sam Jones.

STARRING ADAM WEST

Whether you know him from his iconic role as Batman in the 1966 television series or from his bizarre portrayal of the Mayor on Fox's Family Guy, Adam West is sure to have made an impression. But few people know the man behind the mask. Documentary filmmaker James Tooley spent three years following the legendary actor, meeting his legions of fans, and trying to understand what keeps the 85 year old actor as passionate as ever. Starring Adam West is a fan funded documentary about the creative and turbulent life of Adam West and the fan supported quest to recognize the beloved actor with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dub Box Camper: VW Style

I did a weird search at work today about something I saw in a magazine called the VDub Tub. A spa company converted an old Bug into a working spa. Cool. Then I scrolled down and saw this. Hmm. It definitely caught my VW lovin' eyes!

Dub Box USA is a new twist on the tailgate camper, family camper, food cart or event cart.  While it might look like we are buying up all the camper vans left in the world, rest assured we are not.  Oregon based Dub Box USA manufactures campers, food and event carts from completely new fiberglass shells (and just a little added bonus….it probably floats!)  So don’t worry VW lovers, your VW camper van may still be out there.

The initial design was born from the American vintage trailer, merged with retro styling and modern conveniences for style and comfort.  And the rest of the design?….well, that’s up to you.

Dub boxes appeal to a wide range of buyers. They are simple, fun, stylish campers that can be enjoyed traditionally at a destination camp ground or customized for small business and corporate use.

Of course what outdoor and sports enthusiast doesn’t want a custom trailer to enhance their experience.  And, certainly the vintage and custom car crowd will groove on the nostalgia and the appreciate the craftsmanship.  The food and event cart models are perfect for the entrepreneur looking for an eye catching independent business on wheels.  And, if a business is looking for a portable event cart to strengthen their brand awareness, there is no better marketing tool than a Dub Box.  These are just a few ideas, what are yours?

Dub boxes are lightweight enough to be towed by many vehicles, compact enough to be stored in a garage, the exterior and interior decor is entirely customizable and the layout can be altered to suit the needs of its intended use.  To view our specs, click here.

King Tut

In the 1970s, this was a big deal. Probably the best-known exhibition tour of the era was The Treasures of Tutankhamun tour, which ran from 1972 to 1981. In the 1979, a major exhibit of works from Tutankhamun's tomb traveled the world, and getting tickets to the few museums in America hosting this exhibit was no easy task. We saw this in San Francisco at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in the summer of 1979!

About the Discovery

The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter and George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon of Tutankhamun's nearly intact tomb received worldwide press coverage. It sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt, for which Tutankhamun's burial mask, now in Cairo Museum, remains the popular symbol. World War II Aviation Tattoo

Since my first days here on G+, I've talked about my connection to WWII. I've always had that, since I was a young boy. The war had only been over for a few decades when I was born, and in my early years, I was addicted to all the heroic war movies, and especially to making models of the planes and battleships, and tanks.

Later in life, I discovered the mini-series Band of Brothers and I knew that I'd always look up to the men and women who served in WWII. That we're here today, enjoying our freedoms is because of this "Lost Generation." I admire them, I pay homage to them and I hope to get a full sleeve tat to pay even further tribute to their ultimate sacrifices. It is something I feel deeply compelled to do.

The commitment required for large scale tattoo work is certainly commendable — the amount of time it takes along with the pain and cost over multiple sessions makes the completed piece not only a triumph of art, but also a triumph over various hurdles along the way.

A full sleeve project is one of these large scale projects and is one of the most visible you can get — making it important to get the right artwork from the right artist!

That’s the case in this fantastic sleeve featuring all different sorts of World War II fighter and bomber aircraft.  You can see famous planes like the P-51 Mustang, B-17 Flying Fortress, P-47 Thunderbolt, and SBD Dauntless here.

The awesome sleeve was created by artist Jason Leisge of Oddball Studios in Portland, OR.

I'm pretty sure +byron rempel and I were talking about something like this back in 2011 when we met here. I've always wanted to see his works shown together in a massive show!

It was cool seeing his group of works displayed in the Toronto Google HQ (do I have that right, von Rempel?) But this is equally cool!

I've always supported Byron and all Indie Artists on G+ and I'll never stop doing that. Ever!

Tat Selfie From a Quinquagenarian

On any given day, I shun the usual route of taking a selfie. But tonight, I thought I'd take a #selfie  that shows some of my dog paw tattoo (you only get a little glimpse). Sorry about the darkness and graininess. I'm rockin' the ZZ Top white beard at the moment;  if I shave that off, fifteen years instantly disappear. :-)

But I don't mind gray hairs and a beard. I'm exactly at the age I want to be, and I am damn comfortable in my own skin. It's funny, mom always has looked twenty years younger (as did her mother) so I think I'll have that goin' for me as I dive into the future. But really, age is simply a number, and I know people my age who look 20, 25 years older than me. They do. It's really apparent. Stress and the toils of life have taken their toll. I'm a happy quinquagenarian and still pretty damn hot, so life is good.!

Thanks to +Pam Adger for giving me a much better (and clearer) version. Love you, sweetums!

Modern Card Catalog

Ah, the joys of sifting through the old library card catalogues. No "Google it" then, you actually had to do some work, and for myself, one discovery always led to another. These are relics today - reminders of the past - but to some of us, they'll always hold the fondest memories... which you can remember over and over with this USB thumb drive.

The original Apple Computer 1, also known retroactively as the Apple I, or Apple-1, was released by the Apple Computer Company (now Apple Inc.) in 1976. They were designed and hand-built by Steve Wozniak. Wozniak's friend Steve Jobs had the idea of selling the computer. The Apple I was Apple's first product, and to finance its creation, Jobs sold his only means of transportation, a VW Microbus, and Wozniak sold his HP-65 calculator for $500. It was demonstrated in July 1976 at the Homebrew Computer Club in Palo Alto, California.

On March 5, 1975 Steve Wozniak attended the first meeting of the Homebrew Computer Club in Gordon French's garage. He was so inspired that he immediately set to work on what would become the Apple I computer. Wozniak calculated that laying out his design would cost $1,000 and parts would cost another $20 per computer; he hoped to recoup his costs if 50 people bought his design for $40 each. His friend Steve Jobs arranged to sell 50 computers to the Byte Shop (a computer store in Mountain View, California) at $500 each. To fulfill the $25,000 order, they obtained $20,000 in parts at 30 days net and delivered the finished product in 10 days.

The Apple I went on sale in July 1976 at a price of US$666.66, because Wozniak "liked repeating digits" and because of a one-third markup on the $500 wholesale price. The first unit produced was used in a high school math class, and donated to Liza Loop's public access computer center. About 200 units were produced and all but 25 were sold during nine or ten months.

Unlike other hobbyist computers of its day, which were sold as kits, the Apple I was a fully assembled circuit board containing about 60+ chips. However, to make a working computer, users still had to add a case, power supply transformers, power switch, ASCII keyboard, and composite video display. An optional board providing a cassette interface for storage was later released at the cost of $72.

The Apple I's built-in computer terminal circuitry was distinctive. All one needed was a keyboard and an inexpensive television set. Competing machines such as the Altair 8800 generally were programmed with front-mounted toggle switches and used indicator lights (red LEDs, most commonly) for output, and had to be extended with separate hardware to allow connection to a computer terminal or a teletypewriter machine.

This made the Apple I an innovative machine for its day. In April 1977 the price was dropped to $475. It continued to be sold through August 1977, despite the introduction of the Apple II in April 1977, which began shipping in June of that year. Apple dropped the Apple I from its price list by October 1977, officially discontinuing it. As Wozniak was the only person who could answer most customer support questions about the computer, the company offered Apple I owners discounts and trade-ins for Apple IIs to persuade them to return their computers.

These recovered boards were then destroyed by Apple, contributing to their rarity today.

Lazy Cats in the Summer

My fat cats? Their tale is this: they're morbidly obese, lazy bastards who couldn't kill a fly if one was superglued to their lips or placed directly on their tongue. Okay, well, maybe one of the four is. But they all ARE frakin' lazy! Absolutely useless in ths summer months. Dogs I get. Cats? Not so much.

Don't get me wrong. I'm their Daddy, and they'll come to me when they want something, but they are the biggest diva's I've ever seen, and, well, even though they're indoor cats, maybe they need a dose, now and then, of what our friend here experienced.

Laziest cats on the planet. Seriously. I blame Blaine. :-)

None of this "you complete me stuff" but really, you do in a way, Blaine. I've always been a loner; self-sufficient, a traveller of the world, but until I met you, no one, not a single person, ever made me feel the deepest parts of my heart until we met.

I can't imagine what my life would have been like if we hadn't met, but I know it would have been boring at the least, and infinitely uneventful at the most. I love you with all my heart, I do. And I always have. And today, the world knows it. On Friday, after all these years, we will be a legal couple. Finally.

Sorry, now you're stuck with me, my love! :-)

Here's a video to speak to what we have:

Paw Prints For Atticus and Meg: My Babies

So I wrote the other day that I wanted to get a certain somebody's name on my arm, as we're tying the knot this Friday.

But I was talked out of that today by the said person, as well as the artist. So I made the executive decision to have my inaugural tattoo be a set of two dog's paw prints - one for Atticus, and a smaller one for Meg, right below my shoulder.

They were the loves of my life and they made me happy and smile every day, even when they were being naughty. Considering their tragic end, I decided to pay homage to my kids, my babies, forever. So today, I got my first tattoo in their honor. It looks a lot like this, multiplied times two... I miss them so much, and I still have nightmares where I'm trying to save them. This Girl Plays Rough Shirt: Super Heroes: Wonder Woman T-Shirt

I've never figured out why some people get so hung up on labels, and colors when it comes to gender identity etc. I remember growing up how girls always had to have pink everything,  and it was blue for boys. Always. Those times have changed.

I think boys and girls, men and women should be able to wear whatever they like, and choose whatever colors and patterns that appeal to them. If your boy wants to wear a tiara and hot pink shorts, let him. Let him figure it out, but be there to be supportive. The same with boyfriends and girlfrinds, husbands and wives.

Life is so, so, so fucking short to be worrying about trivialities like these. If you've raised your kids right; if they know about boundaries and respect and all the other lessons of life you've taught them, they'll doj... more »

That's just my humble opinion...

First Tattoo

+Blaine Hall and I have talked about this for-ever. I've given him grief for years about his tats. I don't have a single one (and never wanted one before), but as we're getting married after all these damn years, I know that my first one has to say BLAINE. I love him with all my heart (and have since the day we met) and I would absolutely get a tattoo with his name on me!! To show how much I love him, and always will, 'till neither of us are breathing!

That's a big thing for me. A new step. I'm not sure why I never got them before (probably because every other person on the planet was doing the same thing), but I've seen so many great ones, and I guess I figure -- why not?

Octopus Candle Holder

Alright, I really need to know who loves this and would add it to their home, maybe in a badass library or study? It definitely makes a statement. It might note be as intricate or Gothic as others I've posted about, but it definitely is eye-catching. It appears to be aluminum, with a bronze patina...

Star Wars: I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing

What do you think? Would the family/partner/husband/wife/significant other like this?

Sometimes, bold art works with words can be a bit too much, but damn, this is Star Wars after all. For any Jedi Knight or Dark Lord of the Sith out there, there is no such thing as excess when it comes to our universe! :-)

The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built 1158–1172 that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. This new bridge was originally called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or the Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been the "Charles Bridge" since 1870.

As the only means of crossing the river Vltava (Moldau) until 1841, the Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town and adjacent areas. This "solid-land" connection made Prague important as a trade route between Eastern and Western Europe.

The bridge is 621 m long and nearly 10 m wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. The Old Town bridge tower is often considered to be one of the most astonishing civil gothic-style buildings in the world. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700 but now all replaced by replicas.

The Atom Bomb Was Successfully Tested on July 16, 1945

On this day in 1945, at 5:29:45 a.m., the Manhattan Project comes to an explosive end as the first atom bomb is successfully tested in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Plans for the creation of a uranium bomb by the Allies were established as early as 1939, when Italian emigre physicist Enrico Fermi met with U.S. Navy department officials at Columbia University to discuss the use of fissionable materials for military purposes.

That same year, Albert Einstein wrote to President Franklin Roosevelt supporting the theory that an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction had great potential as a basis for a weapon of mass destruction. In February 1940, the federal government granted a total of $6,000 for research. But in early 1942, with the United States now at war with the Axis powers, and fear mounting that Germany... more »

But in early 1942, with the United States now at war with the Axis powers, and fear mounting that Germany was working on its own uranium bomb, the War Department took a more active interest, and limits on resources for the project were removed.

Brigadier-General Leslie R. Groves, himself an engineer, was now in complete charge of a project to assemble the greatest minds in science and discover how to harness the power of the atom as a means of bringing the war to a decisive end. The Manhattan Project (so-called because of where the research began) would wind its way through many locations during the early period of theoretical exploration, most importantly, the University of Chicago, where Enrico Fermi successfully set off the first fission chain reaction.

But the Project took final form in the desert of New Mexico, where, in 1943, Robert J. Oppenheimer began directing Project Y at a laboratory at Los Alamos, along with such minds as Hans Bethe, Edward Teller, and Fermi. Here theory and practice came together, as the problems of achieving critical mass-a nuclear explosion-and the construction of a deliverable bomb were worked out.

Finally, on the morning of July 16,in the New Mexico desert 120 miles south of Santa Fe, the first atomic bomb was detonated. The scientists and a few dignitaries had removed themselves 10,000 yards away to observe as the first mushroom cloud of searing light stretched 40,000 feet into the air and generated the destructive power of 15,000 to 20,000 tons of TNT. The tower on which the bomb sat when detonated was vaporized.

The question now became-on whom was the bomb to be dropped? Germany was the original target, but the Germans had already surrendered. The only belligerent remaining was Japan.

A footnote: The original $6,000 budget for the Manhattan Project finally ballooned to a total cost of $2 billion.

Very cool work and I'm betting these would look incredible if made into actual stained glass art. For now, we'll have to live with these versions. Great work!

The Holiday Hotel & Casino - Reno, Nevada

It's funny how you have flashbacks sometimes. I remember going to The Holiday as a young boy. My grandmother always loved her 777 slots and this is where we ended up two or three times a year.

In my younger years, we lived in Sacramento, California (4th grade on) and Nana Von used to fly out from Iowa to visit with us. She loved to gamble her whole life, but she especially loved staying at The Holiday. Everyone who worked there knew her name, and loved her, and they took damn good care of her, always. Later, when we moved to Reno, it was much easier just to hang out with her and visit each day (no special travel plans needed).

The Holiday disappeared years ago, but as it's location along the Truckee River was always particularly great; a new modern casino hotel is there on that exact spot today. For me, I'll always remember playing Keno in the coffee shop and all the great meals we had together. I vividly remember standing in the "safe" areas for kids, getting along with cool security guys, and watching Nana always trying to hit those triple-7's. She lived for that, and she loved gambling right up until she passed away this year. Most of all, I remember she loved to give me and my brother buckets of her winnings (back when coins were still used)!

It was never about the money for her (she had plenty her whole life). It was always about the play, and the quest for those Red Sevens! I never saw Nana Von happier than when she was playing her slots. At The Holiday, she also always brought along her GM, Bob Larimer (who was close to our family since I remember breathing; Bob was her go-to guy at her factories after my grandfather passed) and his wife, Mildred. In later years, Mildred moved to Reno after Bob passed. And we still had amazing visits together with Von and Mildred well into my high school and college years.

Alas, those days are gone now. The Holiday is gone, but like the Rat Pack in Las Vegas, it will always live on in my memories. And man, I remember every single little detail of the dozens and dozens (maybe hundreds?) of times we visited Nana at this classy old dame, The Holdiay!

Driving Through Fort Wayne, Indiana Today

It's my day off today since I'm woking about 50 hours over the next four days for the Fort Wayne Three Rivers Festival. But I had to drive in and set up our booth (in a wind funnel!). The drive in was spectacular. I drove through areas I've never been in before and I realized that there are fascinating shops and bars and restaurants all over the downtown area. That area is also filled with quirky architecture and really amazing vintage style all over.

Every time I turned a corner I discovered a new coffee shop, or comic store, or someplace cool for us to visit in the future. Now, FW is the closest big city to us, but we've never really just driven around and allowed serendipity to prevail. Today, that's just what I did.

This festival is in the heart of Fort Wayne, and I got to listen to bands doing sound checks all morming (they're about 200 feet away across a busy street). I was impressed, and every time I visit FW (and knowing great friends who live there like +Scott Cramer +Keith Cramer and their families) I always want to return again.

It should be a great week at the Festival! Stop by and say "hey!" if you're in the area!

All Roads Lead to Willie Nelson: Rolling Stone's Definitive Profile of the Country Icon by Patrick Doyle

He is one of America's greatest songwriters, a hero from Texas to San Francisco, a hippie's hippie and a redneck's redneck. But does anyone really know Willie Nelson?

On a winding stretch of road 30 miles west of Austin, a couple of miles down from a hamburger shack and an auto-repair shop, there's an iron gate with the image of a cowboy silhouette. Type in a key code and ride up a steep, muddy incline surrounded by oaks, cedars and patchy grass. After a left turn at a barn, you will enter a ghost town: a white, wood-frame church, a jailhouse, a bank, a dance hall, a water tower and a saloon.

Type in a key code and ride up a steep, muddy incline surrounded by oaks, cedars and patchy grass. After a left turn at a barn, you will enter a ghost town: a white, wood-frame church, a jailhouse, a bank, a dance hall, a water tower and a saloon.

Willie Nelson built Luck, Texas, on a corner of his 700-acre Hill Country property for his 1986 cowboy film Red Headed Stranger. Nelson wanted the movie to come out a decade earlier, at the same time as his classic album of the same name, but then Robert Redford, who was supposed to star in it, dropped out and Hollywood lost interest.

Nelson, who had dreamed of owning an Old West town since he was a young Roy Rogers fan, pushed forward, despite the fact that he owed the government millions in taxes. He raised money with the help of investor friends. He cast his family and band in the movie, and enlisted University of Texas architecture students to build Luck. The movie originally called for the town to burn down, but Nelson had the ending changed.

"Oh, we never were going to tear it down," Nelson says in a low, husky twang as he drives a '94 Chevy through Luck on a clear, blue winter morning, before letting out a heavy cough. "We wanted to get all the movie money we could and then get them out of town!"

Today, Luck is one of the last standing Western film sets in the country, though "standing" may be an overstatement: The planking has fallen off a barn that houses a John Deere tractor, the imitation rock has almost completely peeled off the bank, and the post office has almost collapsed entirely. When the town's architect returned recently, he thought it needed to be bulldozed.

The ranch and surrounding area are known to locals as Willie World. Nelson also owns Pedernales Cut-N-Putt, a nine-hole course you can see from his house. Next to that is a recording studio, and condos for friends, family and longtime crew members. Poodie's Hilltop Roadhouse, a burger joint full of old Nelson posters and stage props, opened by his late stage manager Poodie Locke, is down the road on Highway 71; Nelson has been known to drop by for a surprise set. Drive to downtown Austin, and you'll find the new Willie Nelson statue on Willie Nelson Boulevard.

With his youngest kids, Lukas and Micah, grown up and out of the house, Nelson spends his rare nontouring days driving around, listening to his Sirius XM station, Willie's Roadhouse, sometimes going off-roading and carving out paths. "I've thought I was going to die a few times with him in the truck," says his daughter Paula. "He's like a kid, doing the whole cowboys-and-Indians thing. It's his playground."

But no one is more astounding than Logan Lerman. Man, this kid runs with this role. He starts as a Greenhorn and ends as a Lion. As in an Olivier Lion. I was impressed, only knowing him from his Percy Jackson roles. You have to see this performance, to see how a young actor can literally chew up the scenery in a quiet, unaffecting way. There were some scenes where I literally felt as if I was there, based on his performance.

The Plot

A dynamite action film concerning the waning days of WWII and a crew of tank soldiers who are led by a no-nonsense figure named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt), and how the group welcomes (or initiates) their newest, youngest member (Logan Lerman) once he is assigned to help them.

As always, Pitt is commanding in what really is a little brother to his 'Inglourious Basterds' character, but the real revelations are Shia LaBeouf (when he has the right vehicle, he can really act) and Lerman (who absolutely crushes it). The story itself does not really kick into gear until the second half, but when it finally gets rolling after a slow-footed set-up, it remains interesting up until its action-filled conclusion. A solid war film that should be viewed. Dan Schultz/ Rotten Tomatoes Super Reviewer

Star Wars Iconic Scenes

This ranks right up at the top. Who can ever forget this scene, and how pivotal it was to the plot. Great work, back when Lucas was, you know, a director...

Princess Leia Organa: General Kenobi. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack, and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour.

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

The Summer Reading List

Way back in the Jurassic era I had insanely complex and demanding reading schedules in the summer. I attended a Country Day School (one that my parents could ill afford, but struggled and somehow figured out a way). Those years laid the foundation for who I am today.

Our reading lists back then were tough. Yes, there was the occasional "fun" read in the lot, but my memory revolves around many a Classical tome, a heavy dose of Shakespeare, and downright difficult reading. But I accepted that. I loved my school, and I was a voracious and fast reader - so it was all great for me. (And I still had time for sports and leisure and playing outside all day, as kids did back then...)

What's on their lists, or should be, in your humble opinion?

Here are some ideas (some great, some cringe-worthy, imho.)

The World According to Netflix

First of all, this is not an indictment against Netflix (or a cheerleading post). This is science! Or, well, an unscientific poll. I'm curious about our G+ involvement with the Flix. Easy question - curious to see the results (especially worldwide).

Given we now have a world of 500+ cable channels, and original content, well, basically everywhere (ahem, Amazon, Hulu, et al) I wonder if they've latched onto the future, now. Vote away!

P.S. I would LOVE to see how many people from COUNTRIES other than the US respond as well. It fascinates me to see how far-reaching Netflix is now...

The Who rose to fame with a pioneering instrument destruction stage show. One infamous performance occurred on television in 1967. The drummer, Keith Moon, overloaded his bass drum with explosives which were detonated during the finale of “My Generation.” As a result, guest Bette Davsis fainted, guitarist Pete Townshend’s hair was set on fire, and there is a legend that he received permanent damage to his hearing.___

Liberty Bell Tolls To Announce Declaration of Independence

On this day in 1776, a 2,000-pound copper-and-tin bell now known as the “Liberty Bell” rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

To this day, I can't help thinking about the film National Treasure when I think of the Liberty Bell...

To this day, I can't help thinking about the film National Treasure when I think of the Liberty Bell...

Four days earlier, the historic document had been adopted by delegates to the Continental Congress, but the bell did not ring to announce the issuing of the document until the Declaration of Independence returned from the printer on July 8.

In 1751, to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Pennsylvania’s original constitution, the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly ordered the bell to be constructed. After being cracked during a test, and then recast twice, the bell was hung from the State House steeple in June 1753.

Rung to call the Pennsylvania Assembly together and to summon people for special announcements and events, it was also rung on important occasions, such as King George III’s 1761 ascension to the British throne and, in 1765, to call the people together to discuss Parliament’s controversial Stamp Act.

With the outbreak of the American Revolution in April 1775, the bell was rung to announce the battles of Lexington and Concord. Its most famous tolling, however, was on July 8, 1776, when it summoned Philadelphia citizens for the first reading of the Declaration of Independence.

As the British advanced toward Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, the bell was removed from the city and hidden in Allentown to save it from being melted down by the British and used to make cannons. After the British defeat in 1781, the bell was returned to Philadelphia, which served as the nation’s capital from 1790 to 1800.

In addition to marking important events, the bell tolled annually to celebrate George Washington’s birthday on February 22 and Independence Day on July 4. The name “Liberty Bell” was first coined in an 1839 poem in an abolitionist pamphlet.

The question of when the Liberty Bell acquired its famous fracture has been the subject of a good deal of historical debate. In the most commonly accepted account, the bell suffered a major break while tolling for the funeral of the chief justice of the United States, John Marshall, in 1835, and in 1846 the crack expanded to its present size while in use to mark Washington’s birthday.

After that date, it was regarded as unsuitable for ringing, but it was still ceremoniously tapped on occasion to commemorate important events. On June 6, 1944, when Allied forces invaded France, the sound of the bell’s dulled ring was broadcast by radio across the United States.

In 1976, the Liberty Bell was moved to a new pavilion about 100 yards from Independence Hall in preparation for America’s bicentennial celebrations. It remains there today and is visited by more than 1 million people each year.

Cutting Vinyl

A picture like this must seem strange to Millennials, and even stranger to young kids. I'm not sure they would believe this, but hey, you never know. LPs, cassette tapes, CDs - these formats are simply a part of the past, and the must seem incredibly unusual to the average kid born in recent times.

But some of us lived through these various formats, and change happened rapidly. Imagine what it must have been like for earlier generations seeing the creation of radio, then the emergence of television. Then rock n' roll hits the planet. It must have seemed as equally strange to them as well.

Now imagine what unknown formats we'll see fifty or a hundred years from now. To me, change is exciting, and I like to roll with the punches. To others, I expect a great deal of anxiety is on the horizon for you.

In any case, the bottom line for me is always the music. The format is, and will always be, secondary. Bring it on, future!

Jurassic World : Your Very Own Souvenir

We haven't seen this movie, and will likely see this years from now, but I do know a TON of you have seen this, as it's the faster film ever to reach $1bn at the box office. This might be a rockin' reminder of the film for you: your very own mounted dino head.

It's sure to be perfect for any mod apartment, dorm room, man cave, or for anyone who likes a little Geek flavor to their office.
