And sharing directly to a social network is an impossibility.

Or the vice versa: Allowing a total stranger into your car...

High tech hitchhiking. What could possibly go wrong?

Oh, recording industry, you never cease to amaze me.

Buying a physical CD and getting the MP3s included for free is cheaper than just buying the MP3s.

Via a friend on Facebook: "I suspect it is some weird licensing issue. Perhaps the music labels have set a floor on MP3 album prices. But the physical CD is priced like any physical good, and the price floated lower. And perhaps separately, Amazon made deal to include the MP3s with any physical album they sell."

I'm guessing this boneheaded practice will be used to state that there's still a large consumer demand for CDs.

I never thought about it this way.

According to a Congressional study, $6,000 is the average amount taxpayers are being dinged per Walmart employee. Walmart's wages and benefits are so low, it forces workers to go on Medicaid and receive housing assistance, childcare subsidies, food stamps, and more.

It's funny that the uproar is directed towards Microsoft, even though the policy is driven and implemented by the publishers. Publishers must choose whether or not to not allow used games on their titles. Microsoft simply provides the capability to do so.

"Microsoft is taking a lot of heat for implementing an online check-in system that will allow publishers to explicitly block the resale of used game discs on the Xbox One. But it's the publishers themselves that will have to decide whether or not to take advantage of the ability Microsoft has given them. So far at least, no publisher has been willing to go on the record definitively stating that they are for or against the existence of second-hand game discs on Microsoft's next system."

“Apple has always placed a priority on protecting our customers’ personal data, and we don’t collect or maintain a mountain of personal details about our customers in the first place,” reads a statement it published late Sunday night on its website.  ”There are certain categories of information which we do not provide to law enforcement or any other group because we choose not to retain it. For example, conversations which take place over iMessage and FaceTime are protected by end-to-end encryption so no one but the sender and receiver can see or read them. It's silly to lock an IM/Video stack down to a platform. Not to mention, it needs to be available for independent security review.___

Interesting, iMessage and Facetime are apparently encrypted end to end: not even Apple is able to decrypt it. Only the two parties participating in the conversation can.

Essentially, Apple's VOIP stack can't be tapped.

Meanwhile, Google's VOIP stack (Hangouts, Voice) has everything is searchable and indexed on a server. So, those  conversation logs could potentially be retrieved by other parties, given Google's participation.

Easy privacy, coming soon.

I'm working on a new feature that will hopefully make it's way into CM. It's called "Run in Incognito Mode". It's a simple privacy feature designed to help you keep your personal data under control.

I've added a per-application flag which is exposed via a simple API. This flag can be used by content providers to decide if they should return a full or limited dataset. In the implementation I'm working on, I am using the flag to provide these privacy features in the base system:

 * Return empty lists for contacts, calendar, browser history, and messages.
 * GPS will appear to always be disabled to the running application.
 * When an app is running incognito, a quick panel item is displayed in order to turn it off easily.

 * No fine-grained permissions controls as you saw in CM7. It's a single option available under application details.

The API provides a simple isIncognito() call which will tell you if incognito is enabled for the process (or the calling process). Third party applications can honor the feature using this API, or they can choose to display pictures of cats instead of running normally.

We aren't providing ad-blocking or device info (IMEI) spoofing. This feature is designed explictly to help protect your personal data, and it will remain as such.___

This is interesting. Google certainly does not need Waze. I'm guessing the acquisition was defensive:

By preventing Samsung from buying/licensing Waze, they remain dependent on Google Maps, and will be forced to be a good OHA citizen.

Facebook was also eyeing this; and the only intention behind that would be to fork Android and build a phone.

Google Maps is the lynchpin holding Android together.

And of course, this also screws Apple.

iOS 7 looks pretty darn good. Still discovering a lot of unmentioned features.

Initial thoughts:

The home button seems to have become a back button of sorts; at least on the springboard.

The zoom effect on folders is slick. It's an actual zoom, vs the peel/split open effect you saw before.

The new iconography and typography is really nice on an actual device. Screenshots don't do them justice.

The new design looks great; has depth while also flat. The smoked glass effect is nice, and not overdone.

The "quick settings" is well thought out; the weird double home tap stuff in iOS 6 and earlier was awkward to use. Accessed via swipe up from bottom.

Spotlight is now accessed via a small swipe down on the home screen. It's been revamped too. It was a pain to access previously . Good fix.
