I haven't been too active posting on G+ lately, mostly because I've been kinda taking a break for shooting for a bit. I participated in a +G+ 365 Project last year, and while it was an amazing journey, I just needed a bit of a break from things. With #spring2013 finally getting things in gear around here, it's motivating me to get back out there and shoot... This tiny little Robin Egg must have slipped out at the wrong time - with no nest in sight.

Went back and visited with one of my favorite Detroit churches this afternoon. Every time I go to check her, she's in much worse shape than the time before. All the plaster is pretty much melting off the walls, and all detail work above the doorways has all been stolen. I'll keep going though, until they seal the place back up, or tear it down. She's one of my favorites!

A wonderful upright piano sits rotting in the basement of an abandoned church in Detroit, MI. A couple more years, and it'll just be a pile of rubble.

Absolutely love exploring places with significant historical backgrounds!
This ballroom in Detroit hosted so many great names back in the day... Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Jeff Beck, Procol Harum, Cream, The MC5, and The Who.
Quite an honor to visit, but I fear it may not be around or accessible much longer.

Woods on Ice - Detroit, MI. To my knowledge, nobody has ever claimed responsibility for creating the massive sculpture that resides in this church. It had to have taken several days to complete, and contains items are large as a piano, to items as small as puzzle pieces. The floor was covered with ice about 1" thick, which made walking around a bit dangerous.

There aren't many chairs left at this abandoned theater in Detroit, MI. The ones that remain are in a pretty "drafty" area, so you may want to bring a jacket. Alice Cooper, the Doors, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Seger, Jethro Tull and the Grateful Dead are just a few of the bands who played here between 1969 and 1973. Afterwards it hosted Jazz shows, became a theater for the performing arts, Raves back in the 90's, and was home to a church for a short while.

For some reason, horses have always scared the crap out of me. I'm not sure why, but I think it's just because of their size. I photographed this one, along with two others for about 15 minutes on a cold foggy morning recently, and I swear they tried to bite me at least 6 times... although my wife claimed they were just trying to get me to pet them.

It took me a little while to figure out was going on, and it turns out, one of my photos was selected as one of the "Featured Photos" on Picasa Web Albums! Mine is the green flower in the upper left, which has now been viewed nearly 400,000 times. Wow, how cool!

I've barely touched my camera since completing my +G+ 365 Project +Creative 366 Project's four days ago. I'm purposely giving myself a little break from things for a while, and catching up on some other things that need my attention. Plus... it's been so darn cold here this week, I don't feel like doing much of anything. Won't be long though, and I'll get back on my horse shooting again.
I do have quite a backlog of shots from the project that I haven't posted yet, so those will be coming your way soon as well. My quest is complete. An entire year of taking and posting a photo every day... for 366 days! In a way it's kinda sad that it's ending, and at the same time, I'm very grateful for the end.
A huge thank you to my wife +Rachel Benore for all of the encouragement along the way, and for putting up with my relentless "picture taking time" day after day. To my children I owe thanks as well, as the project took quite a bit of time each and every day.
In all, I took a total of 15,496 photos this year... and it seems this is only the beginning. To those of you who have followed along with me on this journey, I thank you as well, for all your encouragement! Wishing you all a Wonderful and Happy New Year!

Had a chance to get out an explore some more abandoned places in #Detroit today. We hit up about four locations, and this church was by far my favorite of the day. It was pretty trashed inside, but I loved the architecture and the murals of people they used to decorate some of the back walls.

More ice you say? Well, it's definitely a lesson I learned early on in my +G+ 365 Project and +Creative 366 Project's... That lesson is to take whatever nature gives you, and just go with it. So many times I've set out with the intent on shooting spiders, and end up only finding butterflies. Other times I want to shoot mushrooms, and all I find are spiders. Just take whatever nature gives you, and make something wonderful out of what you're given!

We've been holed up in the house for a couple of days now, and even though today was the first big winter storm of the season, the wife and I decided to venture out and run some errands. Stopped at a few places along the way, and this shot is my favorite from the day. The weird patterns in the creek weren't from a long exposure, but from sections of the stream beginning to freeze over and become slushy.

I started my +G+ 365 Project and +Creative 366 Project project to learn. And here I am 359 days into the project, and I'm still learning and experimenting. Tonight, my project / challenge was to shoot a snowflake. I've learned so far, that it's really hard to do, and even with 100mm of glass in hand, you'll need quite a bit more "reach" to really get something worth-while. Finding individual flakes that haven't had their arms melted off yet can be a bit of a challenge as well. #365project #365group #creative366project #project365 #photo366 #photo365 #project366

Set off out into the woods this afternoon, to see what kind of life signs I could uncover. Other than a freshly bloomed dandelion, all I really came across were some wild grapes still on the vine. No bugs, no birds... nothing.
