"Sunlight on Arlington Row in the Cotswolds" The sun broke through the clouds lighting up these beautiful cottages built in 1380 in the heart of the Cotswolds. The best part was having no tourists in the picture on a holiday weekend!! Add this to your place of must visit stops in the English countryside! Located near Bibury, Burford, and Oxford just a quick distance from London if you are there for a weekend.

"Summit of the Zugspitze" I went down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany last weekend and went to the summit. -- See the cross up there?! I made it to the top!! Just a little scary! Just an amazing place on a beautiful day!! You could see for miles!! Tons of snow still up on top and my hands were so cold I couldn't take any more pictures. I highly recommend going to the top of the Zugspitze with the lakes and mountains all around. 2962 meters above see level, it is the highest peak in Germany. Can't wait to go back in summer!

"Americas Cup Oracle USA" The Americas Cup race is coming to San Francisco this summer. I caught one of the yachts out on a practice run shooting from the helicopter over San Francisco. It was flying! Great to see it closeup from above! You can find out more about the Americas cup races on their website here: http://www.americascup.com/en/sanfrancisco Enjoy!

"Moss Rock and Flowing Water" The green moss on the rock caught my eye here together with the water flowing around the rock and mist spraying in the background. Just love the greens and textures all around! The texture of the moss juxtaposed with the water flowing by and the rocks in the background. You can almost hear the water flowing by!

"San Francisco Cityscape at Dusk" The lights of San Francisco glowing at night with the blue hour and dusk coming on. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. The Transamerica Pyramid and Coit Tower sit prominently. Alcatraz is there off in the distant. This was a weeknight so quite a few offices are still lit up. I just wish this was my view during the week (and then Cook's Meadow in Yosemite during the weekend!) I just love that blue-hour glow and colorful city lights! I'll be showing this new image at my open house May 11/12 down here in Sunnyvale. I hope you can make it! "Above the Fog" I love shots of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge but never had gotten the perfect shot with the Golden Gate Bridge poking through the fog. I saw the weather report at 11:30pm the evening before saying "your commute will be slow in the morning with low lying fog across the Golden Gate Bridge" I thought PERFECT! I'll head up in a few hours! I set out in the dark for the drive up to San Francisco to shoot from the Marin Headlands.
The hike up the hill in the dark and the fog with too much camera gear (30 pounds!) gave me a great early morning workout! I arrived just as the sky was starting to have an amazing glow and the fog was swirling beneath the bridge. I decided to go for a longer exposure to capture the lights of the cars heading to the Golden Gate Bridge. On the right side of the photo you can see some cars heading along Conzelman Road. "Full Moon Rising over the Grant Road Farm" The Grant Road Farm doesn't exist anymore - one of the last farms in Silicon Valley in Mountain View, California, it is history now with houses and pavement. I love incorporating moons in my images and this is one I decided to work on this one as we recently drove down Grant Road and were reminiscing. The mustard is growing in other parts of the San Francisco Bay Area right now, but obviously not here! This old barn together with the majestic tree and mustard brought a little bit of country into the heart of silicon valley. Every year this is where they had the pumpkin patch, Christmas Tree farm, sunflowers for sale, vegetables and flowers. I am sure some folks remember this as how the entire silicon valley looked, so I am glad to have seen this! Copyright John Harrison Photography

Another morning and another day of too much fog... couldn't even see the first tower from Fort Point. I didn't want to head home without getting my fix for the day, so I headed to the tunnel under the 101. Wish it was earlier in the week so I could call it #tunneltuesday :)

Pretty awesome short clip shot by Vincent Laforet on the new Movi 3-axis gyro stabilization system! Built by Freefly System who has been doing helicopter and aerial stabilization rigs - it looks like this will open up a wide avenue of possibilities! I would love to have one to try out! If you happen to get one, let me cover and play with it! Or maybe +Vincent Laforet will let me borrow his!! :-)

"San Francisco from the Sky with the San Francisco Giants and Bay Bridge" It is opening week for baseball so I figured an aerial shot of AT&T Park, the San Francisco skyline and Bay Bridge was appropriate! Any baseballs fans here or anyone going to a game?! Quite a view from above on a clear day! I love all those boats lined up at the marina. Feel free to share with other folks and have a great weekend!

"California Poppy in Spring" Looks like Spring is finally here with a few California Poppies coming up! The Spring rains are a little late, but hopefully we will get more wildflowers coming! Amazing how much these poppies open and close everyday. Enjoy these California Poppies. This is captured with the Nikon D800, 105mm Macro @f/8, ISO 1600 and 1/125.

"Burney Falls at Sunset" Burney Falls State Park has been on my list of awesome waterfalls to visit for a while! I had the chance to go at the last minute and we caught it just as the sun was setting! Quite the roar from the falls. It is a spring fed falls moving over 100 million gallons per day!! It was hard to get a sense of just how large it is at 129 feet tall and twice as wide. In the summer it must be quite the swimming hole! Burney Falls State Park is about an hour East of Mt Shasta and should be added to the California must see list! More info is here on the state park website. Enjoy! It was great shooting here with +Edward Nunez +Eric Leslie and Tim Joyce!! I am ready to go back. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=455 Copyright John Harrison Photography

Happy Waterfall Wednesday
I've finally made it up to the mountains to shoot some waterfalls. A big thanks to +John Harrison, +Edward Nunez & +Timothy Joyce for calling me up and inviting me to tag along.
Saturday evening we hit up Burney Falls and we got some nice light. I was hoping for a little more color in the thin clouds overhead, but I just got a subtle pink/orange hue.

"Las Vegas Cityscape at Night" Aerial shot from my helicopter charter. I love cityscapes at night and all the lights glowing! Las Vegas has plenty of them! I had spent 4 days cooped up indoors without seeing daylight so this was my outlet! I apologize in advance to my Yosemite nature fans as these are definitely the anti-nature images, but give me a sunset and a cool scene and I'll shoot it! Through in a helicopter and I am all over it! Fun through the lens anyway you look at it and I am glad to share! Here are some of the Las Vegas Hotels you can see: Mandalay Bay Hotel, Luxor Hotel, The Hotel, MGM Grand Hotel, Excalibur Hotel, Four seasons Hotel, New York New York Hotel, Aria, Bellagio Hotel, City Center, Planet Hollywood, Paris Hotel, Caesars Palace, The Rio Hotel and the Stratosphere off in the background!

Any nature landscape photogs using the SmallHD (like the DP4) for Liveview focusing? As much as I love the Nikon D800, Liveview focusing is challeging compared with the 5dmkii (not sure if the iii). I was noticing some threads that folks use the DP4 for tiltshift composition - but if the noise is relative to the scanning and sensor, i am not sure an external monitor would help. Thanks in advance!! http://www.smallhd.com/products/dp4/buy.html

Love those colors in nature! The nice bokeh blur of the green trees in the background together with the tropical colors of the purple and red flower. Colors always make for an interesting composition!

"Spring Waterfalls at Mt Tam" This was an amazing hike right after the heavy rains at Cataract Falls in Mt Tam, north of San Francisco. We don't get much rain here in the SF Bay Area, but when we do, it can be amazing! Lush green moss with flowing creeks and trees everywhere! Please share the photo if you like it! I'll post a link to the trail as it is another beautiful place to be for a hike here in the Bay Area!

"Path Through Big Basin Redwoods" I went hiking with the family up at Big Basin Sate Park this weekend. Did you go anywhere?! It is just an hour away from the Bay Area yet many people haven't been there before! It is one of my favorite places to go since it is so close yet so far away from all these people! It was foggy and cold but it made for a nice hike and not too many people up there. Foggy days are perfect for photographing redwoods. Just another place I would like to be on a Friday afternoon. "Three Graces in Mariposa Grove" More shots from the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park. These are 3 Giant Sequoias next to a larger one named "The Bachelor and Three Graces" (I left the Bachelor out of this shot!" This was from Winter last year when it was unfortunately dry enough and no snow to make it to the Mariposa Grove. Definitely include this as another Yosemite "Must Visit" place! Include extra time to make the trip as it can be a slow winding drive. Enjoy!

New Blog Article - Creating Depth: Beyond the Wide-Angle Formula
Depth can be a powerful tool in photography. But landscape photographers have come to rely on one method for creating a sense of depth — the popular near-far, wide-angle perspective. We've limited our options, and we owe it to ourselves to and our viewers to explore other paths, and create images with depth and meaning that go beyond this one formula.

"Grizzly Bear in the Mist" During our trip to shoot in Katmai we had all sorts of weather and conditions. The fog and mist hung low for a few hours this morning we went out. This Grizzly / Brown Bear was on the hunt for salmon with a few seagulls hanging out. This image brought peace and solitude to mind - balanced by this powerful animal ready to pounce on his breakfast. What do you think!? Enjoy!

"Sunset from the Many Glacier Lodge" Glacier National Park, Swiftcurrent Lake. Many Glacier Hotel From this summer with the calm lake and the reflections on the lake. Those canoes couldn't have been put in a better spot! Just sipping a cocktail and enjoying the view - it was stormy and whitecaps on the lake the previous evening!

"Moon Ring at Night" Happy Holidays! Hope everyone has had a nice time with family, friends and hanging out! I have just been home with the family enjoying time with them and seeing friends as well. I captured this the other evening in between the rain storms in the middle of our street. Just an amazing Moon Ring with the high clouds and stars poking through. I love the way the clouds are swirling in the sky! This is with the Nikon D800 and 14-24mm at 19mm. 1 second, f/2.8 and 1600 ISO. Copyright John Harrison Photography

"Ahwahnee Window in Fall" Strolling around the Ahwahnee Hotel is one of my favorite things to do in Yosemite. Add some fall colors or some snow on the ground and that helps complete the picture! Add the Ahwahnee to your list of Yosemite 'must do' stops while you are there. Just walking around the grounds, having lunch in the bar or Brunch in the main dining room is fantastic! Take a stroll through the paths and walks out behind the Ahwahnee down to the Merced and see some of the stone bridges you can walk across without cars running you down. If you are doing the hike to Mirror Lake, you can also start at the Ahwahnee for a less traveled trail that goes under some ephemeral waterfalls and streams. Or, for the penultimate experience - stay the night in luxury (book early and bring lots of $$$$!) and check out the Bracebridge dinner or one of their Vintner Dinners. One hint - go in the... more »

"Leaning Fall Colors" Along the bank of the Merced I spotted this tree leaning over the river. The yellow leaves with the grand branches and trunk curving along. The green canopy of the trees in the background just complete this. I was

Here is a good deal on Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. It normally runs $79 to $99 and it is here for $50. Photoshop elements is one of the best kept secrets around since it can do 90% of what the full Photoshop can and the user interface is actually easier to use imho. Enjoy!

"Fall Colors in Yosemite - Oaks and Trees" I found this nice grove of Oak trees in Cooks Meadow in Yosemite. The trunks radiating outwards with the yellow and green leaves above. The detail in the trunks is what really caught my eye with that one odd branch hanging down. Scraggly brush and trees behind it just finish the composition. Another incredible time in Yosemite National Park. Fall Colors in Yosemite National Park, California

"Mist in Cooks Meadow in Yosemite" From my photo shoot this past week with the fall colors and backlit leaves as the sun is rising over the peak. The mist in Cooks Meadow and the fall colors was just tranquil! I found the backlit leaves
and curvy branches twisting with the leaves! Did you find the hidden treasure in the top left of the photo?! Half Dome is tucked in the trees. Yosemite National Park in the fall is so wonderful! Enjoy! John

"Reflections of El Capitan on the Merced" Nothing like Fall colors in Yosemite! Back from a few days shooting in Yosemite taking a photography workshop with +Keith Walklet through the Yosemite Conservancy. I highly recommend taking workshops to expand your knowledge! Keith and retired Yosemite Ranger, Mike Osborne, were just amazing! I had heard from many folks that Keith's workshops were really good and I am glad I took his. (non-stop energy and fun!) I was focusing on expanding my eye for what I see in nature. +Keith Walklet and Oz just have ways of seeing that are fantastic. Great to learn and spend time with them. I was able to tap into my "inner Oz" and come away with some great shots. I can't wait to go back. It will be great to see what +John Ricca comes away with during his next shoots with Keith and Oz! "Alcatraz Jail Cells Empty at Night" Have you been to Alcatraz Island before? There are usually quite a few people!! Nothing better (and more spoooooky) than going at night with no one there! We did a private shoot on Alcatraz and had the place to ourselves. Nothing except a few photographers. The only downside was that is was SO foggy you couldn't see the normally awesome view of San Francisco from the island! My plan had been to shoot cityscapes all night. Oh well... that is what plan B is for! I'll post the video of the jail cells opening and closing - it was eerily loud and full of echos!! Enjoy!

"Aerial View of Las Vegas MGM at Dusk" I was at the +MGM Grand Hotel & Casino this week for a great work conference but since I hadn't been outside in the 4 days I was there, decided to do an aerial shoot over Las Vegas at dusk! I chartered a R44 helicopter with doors off with my friend from Norway, +Gunnar Kristian Kopperud and we headed out! Just a perfect time to be flying over the city with the glow of the sunset on the horizon and the lights just starting to glow. This was captured with the Nikon D800, Nikon 24-70 lens @f/2.8, ISO 6400, 1/160th of a second.
