I like bicycles.... I still ride the bike I bought for myself as a senior in high school, with my own job money.  I took it to college, and grad school where I sacrificed precious floor space in my efficiency apartment to keep it safe.
Now, it has new handlebars, and I need a comfier seat, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Scientists uncover molecular roots of cocaine addiction in the brain

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have unraveled the molecular foundations of cocaine's effects on the brain, and identified a compound that blocks cravings for the drug in cocaine-addicted mice. The compound, already proven safe for humans, is undergoing further animal testing in preparation for possible clinical trials in cocaine addicts, the researchers say.

Using mice, they found that cocaine induces NO to react with GAPDH so that GAPDH moves into the nucleus. At low doses of cocaine, the GAPDH in the nucleus will stimulate the neuron, but at higher doses it activates the cell's self-destruct pathway. "This explains why cocaine can have very different effects depending on the dosage," Xu says.

The team then did experiments to see whether CGP3466B, which blocks the reaction between NO... more »

I wrote this piece on #optimisticSF  for +Lynda Williams for her blog Reality Skimming back in March. Because I never got notification of its publication, and I was caught up with my own stuff, I assumed it time-slipped and became as lost as Ameron Lor'Vrel,a prominent figure in +Lynda Williams's Okal Rel Saga (which I heartily recommend to fans of either #Dune  or #TheCulture ).

The full blog post also contains an author bio and an excerpt from the rough cut of my upcoming novel, Without Bloodshed, but here's the piece on optimistic science fiction.

===

I don't claim to write optimistic SF for the same reasons I don't call myself a hacker or a feminist. I think "author of optimistic SF" is a title which must be bestowed upon me by others, rather than claimed. To do otherwise seems presumptuous.

A counter-intuitive manifestation of a zero-one law: according to computer models. everyone who was alive in 1000BCE is either an ancestor of everyone alive today, or else an ancestor of nobody alive today (including people in extremely remote and isolated communities).

This seems unbelievable until you realise that with each generation, anyone who is a descendant of the original person will propagate that property to slightly more than two people in the next generation on average.  This birth-death process either extinguishes early on, or else ignites and grows exponentially until it covers most of the world's population after a couple dozen generations; and then all the isolated holdouts eventually get "infected" through one or two migrants.  Geographical or cultural barriers can create bottlenecks for a few generations, but they don't last long(e... more »

Renowned papers –– This may be worth a read

"Recently we discovered (cond-mat/0212043) that the majority of scientific citations are copied from the lists of references used in other papers. Here we show that a model, in which a scientist picks three random papers, cites them, and also copies a quarter of their references accounts quantitatively for empirically observed citation distribution. Simple mathematical probability, not genius, can explain why some papers are cited a lot more than the other." –– Simkin and Roychowdhury

Daily Classical Music Post

"The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May." -- Edwin Way Teale

http://grooveshark.com/s/Appalachian+Spring+Ballet+Suite+1945/4I8Yfv?src=5

O Appalachian Spring! I gained the ledge;
Steep, inaccessible smile that eastward bends
And northward reaches in that violet wedge
Of Adirondacks!

Aaron Copland's ballet Appalachian Spring tells the story of a 19th-century American spring celebration, complete with square dances and revival meetings. The idea for the title came from Hart Crane's poem "The Dance." Copland won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945 for this wonderfully evocative work.

My classical music post for today is Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring.

Your Bleeding Heart

A musical interlude
Marc Broussard - Bleeding Heart

You're my affliction
You say to leave you alone
You're a contradiction
A flower growing in stone
Your pressure seems so high
I'm starting to wonder why it is

Listen, now is it so hard
to let a little bit go
Trying to hide the battle scars
but they're starting to show
Beating me like a drum
making me wanna run from you

[Chorus]
But your bleeding heart
is gonna hurt you
Your bleeding heart
is gonna wear you down
You better say goodbye
or stop the madness
of your bleeding heart
Oh, of your bleeding heart

Can you slow down
Take a second to breathe
You wanna burn it to the ground
but you're burnin' me
Do you like to feel the pain
cause you think... more »

Schmallenberg vaccine available to UK farmers this summer
Vaccine will prevent a disease that causes severe birth defects and miscarriages in livestock.
*All about Schmallenberg virus: http://goo.gl/fuPyT
A new vaccine is being made available to prevent a disease which causes severe birth defects and miscarriages in livestock. Schmallenberg virus, which emerged in the Netherlands and Germany in 2011 and has been seen in cattle and sheep in the UK since early 2012, has been identified on more than 1,700 farms across the country. Adult animals infected during pregnancies in the autumn by virus-carrying midges, thought to have blown across the Channel, have given birth to deformed or stillborn lambs and calves.  UK farmers are the first in the European Union to have access to a vaccine against Schmallenberg, which will be available for vaccinating livestock this summer before mostan... more »

"Barr and his colleagues, who are based at San Diego State University in California, show that animal mucus — whether from humans, fish or corals — is loaded with bacteria-killing viruses called phages. These protect their hosts from infection by destroying incoming bacteria. In return, the phages are exposed to a steady torrent of microbes in which to reproduce. “It’s a unique form of symbiosis, between animals and viruses,” says Rotem Sorek, a microbial geneticist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, who was not involved in the research."
