2 years ago today, on June 18, 2011. the music world lost Clarence Clemons. Clarence was a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band from 1972 until his passing.
If his plans would have worked out, we may never of heard his music. As a youth Clemons also showed potential as a football player, and graduated from Crestwood High School (now Crestwood Middle) before attending Maryland State College on both music and football scholarships. He played as a lineman on the same team as Emerson Boozer and attracted the attention of the Cleveland Browns, who offered him a trial. However, the day before, he was involved in a serious car accident which effectively ended any plans of a career in the National Football League.
He was well known for his music, his acting and his considerable charity work.
RIP Clarence. You... more »

33 years ago today on June 16, 1980, The Blues Brothers, the movie starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd premiered in Chicago (where else).
Universal Studios was very unsure how the film would do, so they did a slow release over the next few days in the rest of the country. The film ended up grossing over $115,000,000.00 before it went for home release.

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

Today we are remembering Rory Gallagher who left us 18 years ago today.
Rory was a guitar players guitar player. It has been said that when someone once asked Jimi Hendrix what is was like to be the world's greatest guitarist, Jimi responded, "I wouldn't know, ask Rory Gallagher".
RIP Rory, you are missed.

Dean Martin was a little late in "getting" Rock and Roll.
On June 13, 1964, The Rolling Stones were on ABC's Hollywood Palace. Dean Martin, who was the shows host, made jokes about The Stones. You will hear them in this video clip both before and after The Stones played. Later in the show, acrobat Larry Griswold performed some death-defying stunts, to which Martin said, "That's the father of the Rolling Stones. He's been trying to kill himself ever since."
Dean Martin didn't think that Rock and Roll would last. We wonder if he ever changed his mind.

Chester Arthur Burnett would have turned 103 years old today. Chester is better known as Howlin' Wolf.
Burnett is commonly ranked among the leading performers in electric blues; musician and critic Cub Koda declared, "no one could match Howlin' Wolf for the singular ability to rock the house down to the foundation while simultaneously scaring its patrons out of its wits." A number of songs written or popularized by Burnett like "Smokestack Lightnin'", "Back Door Man", "Killing Floor" and "Spoonful"—have become blues and blues rock standards.
At 6 feet, 6 inches tall and close to 300 pounds, he was an imposing presence with one of the loudest and most memorable voices of all the "classic" 1950s Chicago blues singers.
Sam Phillips once remarked, &q... more »

38 years ago today, on June 10, 1975, the Eagles released their fourth album, "One of These Nights".
The record's title song became the group's second #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, in July of that year. The album released three Top 10 singles, "One of These Nights", "Lyin' Eyes", and "Take It To The Limit". Those singles reached #1, #2, and #4 respectively. The album became the band's first album to top the charts. The album sold 4 million copies and won the band its first Grammy for "Lyin' Eyes". "Take It To The Limit" became the band's first gold single and the album was nominated for album of the year. The album also features the live concert staple and ballad "After The Thrill Is Gone".

Without this man, Rock and Rock would have still happened. There is no question about it.
It just wouldn't have sounded the same, and there is no question about that.
We are talking about Les Paul, who, if he were still with us, would have been celebrating his 98th birthday today.
Happy Birthday, Les. RIP and Thank You!!!

Billy Preston - one of my fave pianists ever!
From: The College of Rock and Roll Knowledge
Today we are remembering the late Billy Preston who passed away on this date 7 years ago. Billy had battled kidney disease in his later years, brought on by his hypertension. He received a kidney transplant in 2002, but his health continued to deteriorate. He died on June 6, 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona, of complications of malignant hypertension that resulted in kidney failure and other complications.
Billy is one of those people we could go on about for hours, even days. He is called by many "The Fifth Beatle".
We think the best thing we could say about him is... "He was Billy Preston".
RIP Billy. Thank You.

41 years ago today, we were invaded by Spiders from Mars. Well, kinda....
On June 6, 1972, David Bowie released "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" album. It peaked at #5 in the UK but only made it to #75 in the US on the Billboard Music Charts. At first the album was met with controversy and has since been hailed as a seminal work.
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars has been consistently considered one of the greatest albums of all time, with Rolling Stone magazine ranking it the 35th greatest ever. It was ranked the 20th greatest album ever in a 1997 British survey, the 24th greatest of all time by Q magazine and one of the 100 greatest releases ever by Time magazine.
Happy Birthday to Ziggy and his Spiders!!
