Joshua Berg38,006On Aug 28th Google announced termination of the Authorship program, via an announcement from *John Mueller.* goo.gl/QgyUSH *[This HOA Special is TODAY, see event for local time.]* To say this came as a shock to many loyal Google authorship fans & Google+ users would be an understatement. Needless to say there are lots of questions being asked about what all this means... Why did this happen? What does it mean for authors, for SEO & ranking? What about Author Rank, or Agent Rank, are they still coming? What's going to replace authorship & what about schema.org & other markup? So on very short notice, I decided to see if we could get the experts together on this, share our thoughts & answer your questions. Amazingly within a few hours & at the end of the week, we'd reworked our schedules & planned this event. Although I'm pretty sure this panel of well known industry thought leaders don't need an introduction, I'd like to say very special thanks to them all for coming. Complaining

Lately I've been seeing a lot of complaining in my feed. Granted much of it on Facebook. It's so tiresome. But it is valuable because it's such a great reminder to not contribute to that canon of useless whining.

HTPPS and SEO Research

Only 1 in 10 websites has what we consider a flawless HTTPS setup (More on that later).

A whooping 60% of the websites tested have no HTTPS whatsoever (increasing to over 65% when taking into account websites with errors in SSL setup).

Almost 1 in 4 domains were missing a canonical HTTPS version.

Almost 1 in 4 domains were using 302 (temporary) redirects instead of 301 (permanent) redirects.

Even Google can’t be bothered to use permanent redirects and uses temporary redirects (HTTP status code 302) instead. Then again, they won’t ever find it difficult to rank…

The research is depressing (though not shocking) in how poorly sites move to and manage HTTPS. I'm still irked that people are taking the HTTPS ranking correlation and attaching causation.

How Long Does Link Building Take to Influence Rankings?

It seems that each link has a small to medium effect initially, but that effect increases over time. If you add a lot of links at once, you're not only going to see faster results, you're going to see much bigger results over time.

I think this is an interesting piece despite the small sample size. My experience and general theory is that Google doesn't assign full value to new links, in part because so many disappear within a month's time.

So perhaps a new link is work 10% in month one but then gains weight the longer it is alive until it's passing the full value.

Biometric Feedback a Future Ranking Signal?

A newly published Google patent application describes technology that would modify scoring and ranking of query results using biometric indicators of user satisfaction or negative engagement with a search result. In other words; Google would track how satisfied or unsatisfied someone might be with search results, and using machine learning, build a model based upon that satisfaction, raising or lowering search results for a query. This kind of reaction might be captured using a camera on a searcher’s phone to see their reaction to a search result, as depicted in the following screenshot from the patent:

I think this is possible but I think it might fall more under personalization than pure algorithm and it all might be done in the far future (i.e - 10 years from now.)

Search Console API Updates

This. Is. Awesome.

#seo

If you're using the Search Console API, here are some updates you'll like. :)

# Pagination in Search Analytics. Now you can request more than 5000 rows of data for your site, without having to iterate through filters. Check out the "startRow" field documented in https://developers.google.com/webmaster-tools/v3/how-tos/search_analytics

# Crawl errors now include "linked from" information from the start. Check out urlCrawlErrorsSamples.list on https://developers.google.com/webmaster-tools/v3/urlcrawlerrorssamples

# Higher & clearer quotas. Like it so much that you just can't stop using it?  https://developers.google.com/webmaster-tools/v3/limits

I'd love to see what you make with the API -- feel free to drop a link to your tool or to a screenshot here. Are there big ideas you'd like to build that aren't possible with the current API? Let us know here too!___Search Console API Updates

Google Will Crawl and Use Image Title Attribute Tag

It does indeed appear that Googlebot-images reads and ranks img=”title:x” for the text in the img = “title:x” after all.

Very nice test here by +Dawn Anderson to show what is and isn't used by Google Images for ranking.

While crawling is a wonderful thing, analysing your log files directly from the server allows you to see exactly what the search engines have experienced, over a period of time.

The Screaming Frog Log File Analyser provides an overview of key data from a log file, and allows you to dig deeper.

This looks like it could be quite useful. #seo

Updated Google Quality Rater Guidelines

With this version we see some interesting changes.  Most noticeably is the de-emphasis of supplementary content, surprising since previous versions have stressed the importance of the additional supplementary content there is on the page – or the negative impact that content has.

A nice breakdown by +Jennifer Slegg but you really must read the guidelines yourself. It's that important.

Google Cloud Machine Learning

Today we've taken a major stride forward with the announcement of a new product family: Cloud Machine Learning. Cloud Machine Learning will take machine learning mainstream, giving data scientists and developers a way to build a new class of intelligent applications. It provides access to the same technologies that power Google Now, Google Photos and voice recognition in Google Search as easy to use REST APIs. It enables you to build powerful Machine Learning models on your data using the open-source TensorFlow machine learning library.

Certainly one of the ways in which Google is trying to persuade companies to use their cloud service instead of Amazon's.

How People View Search Results

We’re here to say that the F-pattern is no more. The evolution of search engine results pages has caused a similar evolution in user behavior patterns. The strict F-pattern style we saw before is, quite frankly, outdated

I think this is a bit of a reach given the set of data used and the fact that the structure of a SERP can vary dramatically between queries. The F-Pattern is really part of our general style of reading and is broken when other elements on the page catch our attention during scanning.

Clearly the number of elements has gone up dramatically. But if you were to find the queries where that wasn't the case I think you'd likely see the F-Pattern emerge. Not only that but there are likely micro F-Patterns where we fixate on a SERP element and engage in F-Pattern like behavior there.

So, yes, because the SERP has changed structurally we don't see many traditional F-Patterns but I think it would be unwise to write off this behavior altogether.

Are Professional Influencers Impactful?

We see that links shared by organic influencers garner significantly more shares and clicks than links shared by paid influencers. Why such a difference? Most of what organic influencers share is news, content audiences are likely to share anyway. Because paid influencers generate so much more volume (due to promotion of sponsorships, etc.) we would expect their performance to be significantly lower.

I hope marketers are taking note of this data and the thought process behind why the numbers might look this way.

How To Change Someone's Mind

A new paper from researchers at Cornell University sheds some light on how and why people are convinced to change their minds. The researchers analyzed nearly two years of postings on ChangeMyView, a forum on the internet community reddit where posters present an argument and invite people to reason against them.

Interesting more for the source of the analysis in my view, though the specifics do shed a little light. Of course, the overwhelming majority never change their mind.

There’s a lot more we can do in evolving the format. AMP is not just about news and not just about articles. That was our initial focus. I see applications across a whole spectrum of web experiences, from e-commerce sites to the landing pages for an ad.

Well that's an intriguing statement. #search   #google   #amp

Chrome for Android to Get 'Morning Reads'?

Although the entries are in the Chromium bugtracker, it seems a Google developer is using it to track the development of this new feature. One issue describes a service that schedules the ‘fetching of snippets’, another issue is about personalisation.

In another issue the Google developer describes how the feature will fetch content in a smart way, e.g. only at specific times, when the device is sufficiently charged and when it’s most likely the user will read the New Tab Page.

This is an interesting possible feature. News apps have largely failed and many of the destination content sites don't seem to do very well with personalization. This feels like an automated frictionless version of Google Reader in some ways.

Google AMP Project Hack to Add Lead Capture Forms

iframes ARE supported within amp-html, and they can include third party JavaScripts, form tags (useful for lead capture or a comment system like Disqus), and even produce pop-ups.

Cool stuff here from +Paul Shapiro. Though I wonder how long this little loop hole will exist.

Outgoing Links Used As Ranking Signal

The main thing to take away from this test is that although we don’t know and have not proved how powerful outgoing links are in the grand scheme of things, we have proved they do have a positive impact if used correctly.

More importantly, we disproved the old myth of Pagerank retention which in my opinion has done nothing but harm to the internet as a whole as webmasters try to keep the ‘link juice’  in house slowly eroding the building blocks of the web.

This is an intriguing study. I'm already a believer that outbound links matter for a variety of reasons but it's always nice when there's a greater corpus of evidence pointing to that being true.

Google To Shutter Compare Products

The vertical lead generation programs for credit cards, auto insurance, mortgages and travel insurance will start winding down Tuesday.

This is an interesting development. For Google they've basically punted on being the destination, which takes them out of the crosshairs of legal issues and allows them to devote more time elsewhere.

How Location May Influence Search Results

The patent tells us that some websites have a “local significance” to them. Based upon the search engine understanding my search device’s (computer or phone) location, and the location of those websites, if they are within a certain threshold distance apart, those sites might be considered locally significant, and the patent tells us that they may be boosted in search results.

So some sites show up highly in search results based upon relevance and quality and whether or not they are boosted because of location.

This sounds very much like what the Venice update was based upon.

Four Ads On Top

For the past couple of months, Google has been testing SERPs with 4 ads at the top of the page (previously, the top ad block had 1-3 ads), leading to a ton of speculation in the PPC community. Across the MozCast data set, 4 ads accounted for only about 1% of SERPs with top ads (which matches testing protocol, historically). Then, as of yesterday, this happened.

So it still might be a test but ... it certainly looks like this is the rollout based on a positive test. As Google moves to a mobile first philosophy this kind of stuff isn't surprising.

Google Cloud Vision API

Now anyone can submit their images to the Cloud Vision API to understand the contents of those images — from detecting everyday objects (for example, “sports car,” “sushi,” or “eagle”) to reading text within the image or identifying product logos.

This could be quite useful if you know what you're doing.

Quality of Other Sites Plays Role in Rendering Rich Snippets

She said that Google doesn’t want to clutter up the search results too much but that another factor comes into play when it comes to which sites Google decides to show a rich snippet for (or not for).   Google will evaluate the other sites being shown in the same search query, then uses that data to decide which results have rich snippets.

It's always fun when folks confirm something you spoke about 18 months ago. http://bit.ly/richsnippetsalgorithm

Complaining

Lately I've been seeing a lot of complaining in my feed. Granted much of it on Facebook. It's so tiresome. But it is valuable because it's such a great reminder to not contribute to that canon of useless whining.

Wikipedia Building an Open-Source Search Engine

Wikimedia looks to have hired a team of search engineers who are initially tasked with creating better links between all of the assets it owns so it can become a truly searchable open knowledge hub.

This is just ... adorable. I'm sorry but Wiki is a great resource but they absolutely suck at developing product and have a broken process for getting work done. Thinking they'll be able to do this or that anyone is going to actually gravitate toward it is simply a pipe dream.

Where to Place Your Accordion Menu Icons

Every accordion menu needs an affordance icon to tell users what happens when they click it. They should expect the menu to expand with more options. But where you place your icon and what icon you use can affect user task time and expectations.

This matters far more than you might realize. The research is good but you should also test this on your own. But if you're constrained for time or resources, use this as your guide.

Why Sites Shouldn't Put Nofollow on Their Outbound Links

I’ve wanted to blog about this for a while now, but was never quite sure what to say and how to say it. But after being directly affected by it twice recently, I decided “enough is enough”…

It really is ... crazy at this point to nofollow links within your content. Keep the nofollow on comment links, paid links and for crawl prioritization.

But there is no benefit to nofollowing links in the hopes of PageRank sculpting. The link equity now simply evaporates and does not pool to the other links on the page.

And there's a good chance that you're depriving yourself of establishing yourself in the link graph, building topical authority and entity associations.

A Synoptical Style of Online Reading

It's a way of reading on a topic that is both broad and deep, covering many different kinds of resources and content types, that leads to an understanding of a topic that is synthesized from all of the materials just read.

I believe this is far more prevalent than we believe and is brought about by the unprecedented access we have to information.

Twitter Engagement Study

What you see before you is the result of analyzing more than 2 million Western language tweets out of over 4 million Tweets we collected. In this paper we will outline the results of analyzing that data to learn and understand what drives behavior on Twitter.

Outside of social authority the biggest impact seems to be images, which reminds me about how Twitter is turning more into Twumblr. It simply must get more visual.

How To Out Class The Competition

Identifying query classes is one of the most powerful ways to optimize large sites. Understanding query classes allows you to identify both user syntax and intent.

I’ve talked for years about query classes but never wrote a post dedicated to them. Until now.

My latest post where I give away one of the most important concepts I use in optimizing large sites.

No More Deceptive Download Buttons

You may have encountered social engineering in a deceptive download button, or an image ad that falsely claims your system is out of date. Today, we’re expanding Safe Browsing protection to protect you from such deceptive embedded content, like social engineering ads.

This is going to hurt the bottom line of a number of sites - and with good reason too.

How Do Users Interact with Predictive (Queryless) Search?

While much has been written about how users interact with traditional desktop search, and some has been written about how user interact with mobile search results, interactions with proactive search have not been as well-documented.

Microsoft conducted a study to determine how user behavior could be used to improve rankings and relevance in proactive platforms, which highlights a number of interesting takeaways about user behavior in these new ecosystems.

Good stuff here about what an ever increasingly part of the search ecosystem. Well worth the read.

Google Displaying JSON-LD Ratings and Reviews Snippet

Google is now supporting ratings and reviews in JSON-LD format in the Google search results. It is supporting JSON-LD for both the search results and review listings shown in the knowledge panel.

I'm a big fan of JSON-LD for this type of stuff but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop here since the ability to spam JSON-LD is enormously high.

The One Kind of 404 That Could Be Quietly Killing Your Search Efforts

Do 404 errors hurt SEO? It’s a simple question. However, the answer is far from simple. Most 404 errors don’t have a direct impact on SEO, but they can eat away at your link equity and user experience over time.

There’s one variety of 404 that might be quietly killing your search rankings and traffic.

I'm still amazed at how many people ignore their 404s. It's one of the few things that we, as SEOs, have control over and staying on top of them can absolutely add value to your search efforts.
