Virtual Photo Walks™4,245,278Ok we have a save on the 1pm time slot we are going to Washington DC to look at the White House. Thx to +Christina Arenas Watch at http://youtu.be/YKJO4LX-xmIjb #virtualphotowalks  cancelled to windy at the airportjbVirtual Photo Walks is going for a flight around the Kawartha lakes, we will view the Trent Canal and surrounding Lakes and towns. The Kawartha Lakes are a chain of lakes in south-central Ontario, Canada that form the upper watershed of the Trent River. The lakes are located on the boundary between the Paleozoic limestone regions of the Golden Horseshoe, and the Precambrian granite Canadian Shield of northern and central Ontario."Kawartha" is an anglicization of the word "Ka-wa-tha" (from "Ka-wa-tae-gum-maug" or Gaa-waategamaag), a word coined in 1895 by aboriginal Martha Whetung of the Curve Lake First Nations. It was hoped that the word, which meant "land of reflections" in the Anishinaabe language, would provide a convenient and popular advertising label for the area, much as "Muskoka" had come to describe the area and lakes north of Gravenhurst. The word was subsequently changed by tourism promoters to Kawartha, with the meaning "bright waters and happy lands."Virtual Photo Walks is taking off for a flight around the Kawartha lakes2014-07-30 14:00:0026

In order to do this, we'll dig into a few unedited folders of images in Lightroom to give a behind the scenes look at the photos that were captured. Here we'll look at how using Collections in incredibly important for whittling down to the keepers. We'll look at a few different examples:  iPhone photos, commercial shoot and a personal project. Finally, I'll highlight a few steps in Lightroom to make some improvements. Alan Shapiro2,921,079I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making the best bags in the world.)Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. Christi Nielsen32,182Everyone get ready for the G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk!   Woot! We're meeting at Union Station at 6:30pm. If you like architecture, Union Station has fabulous ceilings, lines, arches and more. We'll venture out into the surrounding area as well, and we just might end up on Olvera Street for some LA history and margaritas! =DInvite anyone you know who might be interested. They don't have to be on G+!Photo contest!  The categories are: Macro, Wildlife, Portrait, Landscape, Architecture, Black and White, and Sunrise/Sunset. The photo needs to be taken during the photowalk, and you cannot enter it in more than one category. I'll have more info at the event. You must be a member of G+ to enter the photo contest, so if you're bringing friends who aren't on G+, encourage them to create an account if they want to enter. **UPDATE:**Here's the plan folks: We'll spend some time at Union Station, then head to Chinatown (7:15). Sun sets at 8:08 so we'll still have some light before the sun goes down. After that, the lights at night in Chinatown are pretty cool. Then we'll head back to Olvera Street (which is right across from Union Station). For those who wish to stay, we'll pop into one of the mexican restaurants there for food and margaritas! I expect to be back at Olvera Street around 8:30, but you know things always take longer than you think, especially with photographers! We'll meet at the main entrance to Union Station (Alameda street). If you come to Union Station via the metro lines, you'll need to walk down that long corridor to the other side. You can't miss it, you'll instantly see the high ceilings and fabulous architecture. If you don't see anyone with cameras, look for a Circus Circus wig. That'll be me. I tend to like to know a little info/history about where I'm shooting, so here's a bit to get you started if you're interested.Union Station - "Last of the great railway stations" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Station_(Los_Angeles)Chinatown - Was demolished to make room for Union Station - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatown,_Los_AngelesOlvera Street - Birthplace of Los Angeles - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olvera_Street Here is a link to info about photography and the Metro. Keep in mind you CAN use a tripod in Union Station if you fill out a short form. You'll have go to the Security Office right inside the main entrance. If you can't find it, ask the Information Desk  (in the picture above). I'm pretty sure when you get to the otG+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk - Los Angeles, California2013-06-29 18:30:0066

Then we'll have to nail down transportation.I know there are lots of questions, but I needed to get this out now so people can make plans. I don't have an ETA for returning to LA. Gailen Mapes57,765Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera G-H - 5 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to January 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting December 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mape2014-01-05 11:29:44146639

Where's Waldo The Helicopter

Sometimes it's hard to convey scale in photos of Yosemite.  Especially when there's a large, far away object such as Half Dome.  Somewhere in here is one of the Sikorsky S-64's used to drop water on the #MeadowFire  .  I promise - it's there!.  I think it was getting water from Tenaya Lake, judging from where it was going, but I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere.  That would be a cool sight to see as well.

Fortunately the fire seems much less dramatic today.

This weekend marked the 20th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act in the United States.  Have we come a long way since then?  Yes.  But sadly domestic abuse is still common, and even accepted in places.  I rarely look at twitter, but searching all the #WhyIStayed   #WhyILeft  tags was heartening and saddening all at once.  To leave or not to leave is a personal decision.  But choosing to stay because you don't think you have a safe place to go should never ever be an option.

Do you need help?  Do you need a place to escape to?  See http://www.thehotline.org/ or call 1-800-799-7233 | 1-800-787-3224 (TTY)

If you just want to help also see the above website - you can volunteer time or financially.

I always get reminiscent this time of year.  Lately I've been digging through older photos (And old family photos).  While this is only about a year old, the place and reflections remind me of the ghosts of summers past.

Half Dome by Fire and Moonlight

Earlier today I saw a post by +Richard Creamer about the #MeadowFire  in Yosemite.  I had been looking for a place to shoot the moonrise but this looked more interesting!  (I did get the moon here and there too).

The fire is somewhere between 300 and 400 acres, and lightning caused.  It really was amazing to see so much of Little Yosemite Valley (the area behind Liberty Cap) on fire.  It looked to be spreading away from the main Yosemite Valley and up the canyon.  And the best news is just before I left there was a nice rainstorm.  Hopefully the random lightning goes away, and leaves just the rain.

For more updates see http://www.nps.gov/yose/blogs/fireinfo.htm

I think this is when my hiccups were subsiding.  There's still some wavy motion from them, but not as jagged as some of the others.
I have no idea how there is one straight line!

Mono Lake Impressionism

Sometimes between the blue hour and actual sunrise there's a point where the light is really magic on water, but not as nice on objects.  So I played a bit with panning my camera back and forth across the lake.  And out of 73 shots, I think I like two!  It's sometimes hard getting thing just so.  And at one point I got the hiccups making it impossible to get a smooth pan.  :(

Last Friday night Bodie State Park had extended hours (until 10pm).  It was so much fun to be there after normal hours.  In addition to the extra time they also conducted special haunted tours in the town, as well as a guided tour of the cemeteries.  I went on the cemetery tour and it was soooo fun!  The tour guide told so many wonderful tales of those that lived and died in Bodie.  Including my favorite memorial, Evelyn.

This was a bit earlier in the day as the sun was low on the horizon.  I loved the soft light, and how shooting through the old glass adds another layer of softness.  I'm sure there were a few noseprints too :-)

Check out the other wonderful photos being posted by +Michael Frye +Lori Hibbett and +Jeff Sullivan none of whom I ran into while there.  Boo.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree!!!  I use a backpack style bag, because most often I'm hiking/walking outdoors.  But the straps have never quite fit right.  And I tried on A LOT of bags before buying this one.  The front straps do not sit in the correct spot because of my ummm curves, resulting in a sore back after a day of wearing it.  Not to mention it just looks incredibly unflattering if the front strap is used.

I'm also copying +Tamara Pruessner 's comments, as they sum up the rest of my feelings nicely.  Except I'm 5'5" :)

Camera Bags: A Rant of Frustration from a Woman's Perspective, by @nicolesy:

I am sharing +Nicole S. Young's post because I am running into the same problems - camera bags designed for the male body and when I try to use it, fits poorly, pinches, or just plain hurts my back when I carry it more than 30 minutes.  Or to find the "women's" line and realize all the manufacturer has done is change to "pretty colors".  Come on!!  A bag that is designed to hold my professional gear should also be made for a woman's body - curves where a man doesn't have any, straps that don't pinch or hurt, and a point of load bearing that isn't going to make me ache.

I am a 5'2 woman - a camera bag designed for a man who is at least 8 inches or more taller and weighs quite a bit more, PLUS by nature alone, has more upper body strength than I do,  JUST ISN'T GOING TO WORK FOR ME.

Bag makers - +Lowepro US +Lowepro +Tamrac +Think Tank Photo +Tenba +Manfrotto Imagine More   (bc you are now carrying the Kata Bags), and anyone else... Do you have a line of bags SPECIFICALLY made for women's bodies?  I am not talking about colors (though something other than the standard black would be awesome).  I am talking about specific design and capability to hold all of my gear when I am chasing a storm, a sunset, or whatever.  Could I wear your bag for more than 30 minutes and not have my lower back ache?

For that matter, does any one know of a bag line that would work?  "

When I was walking back to my truck from the Old Marina at Mono Lake, something told me to turn around.  I was so glad I did.  The setting sun lit up the tufas and the little white area around Black Point.  There wasn't much color in the clouds (yet) and the foreground was already in shadow, so it didn't take much work to convert to black & white.

I still can't decide if it reminds me of an old western or and old sci fi movie.

Happy birthday +G Dan Mitchell! Hope your day is a bit easier than this tree. :-)

If you are one of the few not following him, please take a look at his photography, I've always loved his lack of capturing light, and the lone struggling trees. I first started following for his work in Yosemite, but also love his work in other wild places - including orchestras.

"Boulder and Small Tree." Yosemite National Park, California. September 18, 2011. © Copyright 2011 G Dan Mitchell – all rights reserved.

This little tree seems like an impossibility. In a tiny crack in a very large boulder, some distance from the shore in this subalpine lake, it somehow manages to live and seemingly even thrive. It is hard to imagine a more difficult place for a tree to grow. It is also difficult, though interesting, to imagine what this tree might look like if it manages to succeed in the long-term and live for perhaps a hundred years or more. Will it get to the point that its roots begin to grow out of the small crack and spread across more of the rock, and might it form a small pocket of soil that supports other smaller plants? I had such a great time playing in the mountains yesterday! After scouting out some back roads for for aspen groves making friends with some free range cattle and talking with a really nice fisherman I headed to Mono Lake to shoot the moonrise. The Sturgeon Moon, to some.

I was hoping to get the tufas in the foreground, but the moon rose so far south I wasn't sure that would be possible - at least not while staying dry. So I headed back to the Visitor Center to get some mountain layers the foreground.

The hazy skies turned the moon a soft pinkish color, and the Sierras behind me left everything else a shadowed blue.

I made a small detour on the way home from shooting the moonrise last night.  It was sooooo smokey in Yosemite Valley from a control burn (which scared the poop out of me when I first saw it - I didn't see the sign that it was a control burn until a bit further down the road).  But I'm glad I got back up above the smoke.  And that the clouds cleared enough to let the moonlight shine on the back of Half Dome.

I was fairly surprised by the number of people there.  Usually I have the place to myself at night.  But I talked to a really nice family for a while -- their son was just getting serious about photography and was having a field day in Yosemite.

And I have to tag +Oleg Perejogin , just because he loved Half Dome so.  :-)

A few days ago it was a flash flood warning because of a dam in danger of collapsing. Now fire weather warnings.

I'm waiting for the earthquake weather warnings. It might not be scientifically proven, but it is a "thing".

Thank you +OfficeMax !

Today I went off in search of what I thought was going to be an easy purchase.  First I went to the two office stores closest to me.  For no other reason than they were close.  The item was locked up requiring someone from the store to get it for me.  I understand that need, it's small and probably a target of shoplifters.  But do you think I could find anyone to get it for me?  nope.  Not at either one.  No one even said "hello"  or "I'll be right with you".  I didn't see anyone other than the people at the checkout.

I really wanted to get this item today - so I drove another 20 miles to Office Max.  Within a minute someone was there to help me, and not only did she get the item I needed, but the two free gifts you get when buying it.  YAY!!!!  Within just a few minutes I was done and on my way home.

It's experiences like the first two that make me order online more and more.   It's experiences like the last one that make me want to shop locally (well sorta locally) and keep real stores in business.  ___

Just a friendly reminder!  I love this theme - but if you don't use the correct hashtag people can't find you!

Any questions please comment on Jason's post!!

It seems it is time to send out a little reminder about how to play in the #WordlessOnWednesday theme:

The idea is to post an image without any words, title or description about it.  Just let the image speak for itself, let the viewer come up with his own ideas about the shot and they can mention them in the comments.

No Titles
No Descriptions
No Reply Comments for 24 hours from the poster
Just add the tag #WordlessOnWednesday

Post your photo and sit back and let the viewer take it all in and interpret it the way they see it, how they feel it.

Give it a shot, I think you just might enjoy the freedom and then you can spend your time checking out everyone elses images :-)

No themes for your images, just post whatever you want and we will do the rest

And there is only one hash tag #WordlessOnWednesday

Please share with your friends that play in #WordlessOnWednesday

Thanks and have an awesome day :)___Just a friendly reminder!  I love this theme - but if you don't use the correct hashtag people can't find you!

I had such a fun weekend!!!  Saturday I had the pleasure of seeing the mighty +Karen Hutton at her show at the CoffeeBar in Truckee.  If you're passing through on the way across the Sierra's be sure to stop by for a yummy coffee and beautiful art.

While the Hangout On Air was done in by power surges I don't think Karen's smile faded once.  Here she is with +MOO! The Cow that Travels  - the one time she stopped moving for at least 2 seconds!!

So good to see you again Karen, and also to see your images printed HUGE!!!  They look incredible.

I never saw any lightning, but there was a whole lotta thunder.  And it was 98 degrees and 55% (at least) humidity and crazy strong winds.  Ugggy.  I was really surprised at how quickly the storm moved down the mountains.  When I first set out the clouds were probably close to the crest of the Sierras - if not on the east side.   In little over an hour they had moved down the western front.  (Roughly 50-60 air miles, I think, maybe a little less).

Hazy Shade of Winter Summer

Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say, but if your hope should pass away
It's simply pretend
That you can build them again
Look around, the grass is high
The fields are ripe, it's the springtime of my life

Awesome!

This is kind of cool. When it's released in August it might make a great handwriting font for designers. Basically it would be a font that, on average, is very similar to a real person's handwriting. Would be interesting to see if people relate to it better.___Awesome!

Awesome! I'm really looking forward to getting this! Especially since I broke something and the plugin won't install on my admin account on my computer. :-)

Thanks for the update and tips +chee chew!

i'm getting lots of questions about our no-plugin release of hangouts... after +Victoria Kirst 's announce (https://plus.google.com/103171586947853434456/posts/39TCW3PcLye)   especially from the more tech crowd...  so i thought i might consolidate and answer a bunch of things together.

this is a very substantial architectural change for hangouts.  +Victoria Kirst  has bee leading the charge for it for quite a while.  since it is such a huge change, we are rolling it out slowly initially, measuring the impact to make sure things don't break, then rolling out more and more.   we have temporarily paused the rollout over the 4th of july holidays because i don't want to call folks in to work on an emergency over their holiday break, but we will continue the rollout next week.

currently we are rolling out to @gmail accounts first, as we typically do.  for many google rollouts, we commonly hold business account rollout a bit towards the end to provide maximum stability for businesses.  i expect this will roll to domain accounts in the next week or two.

it is rolled out to the canary & dev 100% and beta (90%) channels of chrome, so if you want to play with it early and it's not on your stable account, you can try another channel to kick the tires.

#hangoutstips  can also force no-plugin by using an url param of ?lantern=1  no guarantees that this will work forever, but it is a switch we were using for internal testing.

this "no plugin" uses webrtc and some nacl technologies, so it is only available in chrome for the time being.   if you remember the early days of bluetooth, not everything interoperated well with every bluetooth device.  we are still in the early days of webrtc, and not all platforms support what we need.  we'll get there....  by the way, nacl is also open, and we would love for other browsers to implement it as well.  but eventually term, i hope and expect webrtc across all browsers to be hangouts capable.

no-plugin hangouts works for both hangouts on air as well as straight video hangouts.

since we don't go through the plugin sandbox, this also means hangouts will consume less cpu than before :)

#hangoutstips   the chrome tab will now also have a red dot (no, it's not a "record" indicator) so if you've tabbed away, it's easier to find which tab has the hangout window to go back to it.

#hangoutstips  since we only need chrome, this works on android's chrome browser.  it's not as efficient as using the native app, but if you really want to use features only available on the web (like starting hoa, phone calling, some of the hangout apps, etc), you can give it a go.

enjoy :)___Awesome! I'm really looking forward to getting this! Especially since I broke something and the plugin won't install on my admin account on my computer. :-)

Tombstone Tequila Sunset

There's a wildfire burning to the northwest of me, so I went out hoping it would contribute to a colorful sunset.  But the time the smoke drifted down towards me it was just a layer of haze.  But it did do some interesting things to the sun.   See http://goo.gl/bR43Zl for info on the fire.  As well as +Dave Bell 's post - http://goo.gl/H5Zly8

And +Kurt Harvey I've found my "lost" treasure of tombstone rocks.  I have to get here a bit earlier next time - there's all sorts that are both accessible, and near places to park!

Bucks in the spring look soooo soft and sweet with their velvety antlers.  This guy was really kind - didn't mind me shooting away even from a about a dozen feet away.  Of course it's possible he thought he was hiding behind the twig ;-)

He was right next to a rather busy trail head in Yosemite (by Lembert Dome) but amazingly only one other person saw him.  People miss so much when they're in a hurry to get from Point A to Point B.  Sometimes we all need a gentle reminder to slow down and take in the sights.
