We want to promote the learning and sharing of self portraiture as an art form - our tagline is "Go Beyond the Selfie" - so let's go all-in on making great, high quality art! Lotus Carroll1,777,667This is the Event for our November Self Portrait Challenge: *Cinematic*. What this means is let your images be inspired by the look and feel of moving films, cinema, movies! Basically, they'll look like stills taken from a movie - drama, mystery, and action are all great genres to focus on. Location, lighting and angles will play key roles in your imagery, as well as your post processing technique for color, cropping, and more. Here is where you enter your ONE Cinematic Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST November 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* Like most things, there are many ways to achieve this kind of look (just as there are many styles of cinema!), so find a style that suits you and work with it. This @111480916026711337375 article has some interesting information that you might enjoy: http://goo.gl/KhWR79   A good thing to remember when creating your image is that _movies tell stories_. As such, the story being told by your photo will have a huge impact on how "good" the finished product is - does your one image effectively pack the punch to tell a story? I think that the greatest cinematic images have great scene, lighting, angles, post processing (color, cropping, etc) and ALSO have been set-up such that they tell a story with impact. Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. The header for this Event was created by @112528921891703025888.  If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/W69Ohj and ask away! Olav Folland39,915So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005

Alan Shapiro3,999,863I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making *the best bags in the world.*) Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. Christi Nielsen34,473*Everyone get ready for the G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk!*   Woot! We're meeting at Union Station at 6:30pm.  If you like architecture, Union Station has fabulous ceilings, lines, arches and more. We'll venture out into the surrounding area as well, and we just might end up on Olvera Street for some LA history and margaritas! =D Invite anyone you know who might be interested. They don't have to be on G+! *Photo contest!*  The categories are: Macro, Wildlife, Portrait, Landscape, Architecture, Black and White, and Sunrise/Sunset. The photo needs to be taken during the photowalk, and you cannot enter it in more than one category. I'll have more info at the event. You must be a member of G+ to enter the photo contest, so if you're bringing friends who aren't on G+, encourage them to create an account if they want to enter.  ****UPDATE:**** Here's the plan folks: We'll spend some time at Union Station, then head to Chinatown (7:15). Sun sets at 8:08 so we'll still have some light before the sun goes down. After that, the lights at night in Chinatown are pretty cool. Then we'll head back to Olvera Street (which is right across from Union Station). For those who wish to stay, we'll pop into one of the mexican restaurants there for food and margaritas!  I expect to be back at Olvera Street around 8:30, but you know things always take longer than you think, especially with photographers!  *We'll meet at the main entrance to Union Station* (Alameda street). If you come to Union Station via the metro lines, you'll need to walk down that long corridor to the other side. You can't miss it, you'll instantly see the high ceilings and fabulous architecture. If you don't see anyone with cameras, look for a Circus Circus wig. That'll be me.  I tend to like to know a little info/history about where I'm shooting, so here's a bit to get you started if you're interested. Union Station - "Last of the great railway stations" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Station_(Los_Angeles) Chinatown - Was demolished to make room for Union Station - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatown,_Los_Angeles Olvera Street - Birthplace of Los Angeles - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olvera_Street   *Here is a link to info about photography and the Metro*. Keep in mind you *CAN* use a tripod in Union Station if you fill out a short form. You'll have go to the Security Office right inside the main entrance. If you can't find it, ask the Information Desk  (in the picture above). I'm pretty sure when you get to the other side (long corridor where you board regular metro trains) that regular metro rules apply (no tripods). But no worries. Just ask the security office for specifics when you fill out your form. http://www.metro.net/riding/getting-started/non-commercial-photography/ Wear comfy shoes! Let me know if you have questions or suggestions. Cheers!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk - Los Angeles, California2013-06-29 18:30:0063

Christi Nielsen34,473+Drink and Click™ LA is going to the wine country! Woot! *And it's on a Saturday. ;-)* Our main destination is Zaca Mesa winery, just north of Santa Barbara, but we will make other stops as well. This will be an all day trip, as we need to leave early in the morning to get there by 10ish (we have a reservation) and to allow for other stops before heading back to LA. Travel time there and back is roughly 2 hours. The +Drink and Click™ SB folks will joining us. Yay! ***This is very important so please read*** *Please think about this event before you RSVP. I really need to have an accurate head count for this one. Our reservation depends on it AND so does transportation. We can all pitch in and rent a van if we want, or we can just carpool with a couple of vehicles. I'll give you all a week or so to figure out if you can make it. Then we'll have to nail down transportation.* I know there are lots of questions, but I needed to get this out now so people can make plans. I don't have an ETA for returning to LA. I would allow for the entire day, meaning we won't get back until after 8-9? We can always adjust the return time. So come join us! Anyone is welcome. Any camera, any level. We'll have lots of fun shooting and tasting. Of course, no drinking is ever required. :) Cheers! Monthly contest theme is Strangers At The Bar. While I'm not the speediest person going through  +The Arcanum , I have been thoroughly enjoying the ride.  And getting distracted by many shiny objects along the way.  Sorry +Robin Griggs Wood - glitter, squirrels and meerkats are impossible to resist!

One of the challenges to do for my current level is to create 10 new works.  Since I like to make things difficult, I also wanted to do something I've never done before, in this case create a mosaic.  While there are easier ways to do this - I wanted to do it by hand.  Partly to chose what images I use, and also because the act of creating is more fun to me than letting a machine to everything.  Although, I still did this in Photoshop, not by printing, cutting and gluing a bunch of tiny images together.

It really is a fun way to go back through old images, and rediscover them.  Many of them were images thatdidn't ... more »

Walking with Ghosts

I've always been fascinated by wildfire behavior.  While some things are predictable in how they move (upwind, uphill, etc), IT can burn savagely in one are, but leave some trees untouched just feet away.  The white trees were lost in the Rim Fire a few years ago, the trees with the brown needles were weakened by the fire and drought and have succumbed to the Bark Beetle (http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5384837.pdf  Please note this is a pdf if you're on mobile and don't want to download it

But there are still pockets of green survivors here and elsewhere in the burn scar.  It was also nice to see the ground greening up, wildflowers were sprouting like mad in the lower elevations.  And higher up there was still snow to play in!

It's so windy here today I feel a bit like this seagull, but the good thing is I didn't have to sweep the sidewalk and driveway after mowing :D

Happy #seagullbuttSaturday , peoples. Enjoy the day!

And yes, this is a composite, both shots were on the same day, not that far from each other. :)

Steep canyons are such wonderful places for exploring wildflowers as well as other plants.  This one runs mostly east/west and there's a huge difference in plants on the south facing slopes vs the north facing.  This is one of the sunnier spots and was full of lupines and poppies, as well as early growth of paintbrushes, fiddlenecks, and brodiaeas.

This is one of my favorite areas along the Tuolumne River, it's different every spring.

Nyommy. I'm trying to cut back on soda in general, but when I do have it I prefer the natural cane sugar over corn syrup. I don't care how many corn syrup scientists say it's the same chemical, it tastes different, less sticky, more crisp.

Thankfully the real stuff is easily available where I live.

Wrapping up #nationalparkweek   with a sunset seems right.  This is in #Yosemite  on the road to Hetch Hetchy, looking down one of my favorite canyons.  Technically, I think most of this photo is outside the Park, but I was inside while shooting it :D

Color is courtesy of leftover dust and smoke from the Rim Fire which was still smoldering in places.  Valleys courtesy of the Tuolumne River.

Hope everyone was able to get out, or at least plan a trip to a nearby National Park - no matter what country you are in.

Also if you'd like to see more of my photos from Yosemite and the Sierras see - https://plus.google.com/u/0/collection/47yuFB  I'm gradually adding new as well as old favorites to the collection.

Only 2 more days left to #NationalParkWeek  !

I keep waiting for Ancient Aliens to do an episode about how Yosemite was created by aliens, because of how the setting sun points so perfectly to Bridalveil Falls in the fall and spring ;)  (I'm only half joking, I do love that show!)

Death Valley is my second favorite National Park.  It's such a raw, beautiful place.  And one where you have to constantly keep the dust off your lens, or you get glittersparkleflares like this.  This was shot up at Dante's View looking down at Badwater some 5,750 feet below.

I was gone all day and missed yesterday's post for #NationalParkWeek  This is one of my favorite shots of the #GrandCanyon  .  I would love to have the time to explore every little side canyon along the Colorado.  Such a beautiful spot.

I've been posting my shots from Yosemite over on this collection - https://plus.google.com/u/0/collection/47yuFB  If you're only following this one, please feel free to have a peek at it, and my other Collections as well.  I recommend doing the same for other photographers you follow - we often have multiple collections for different areas, projects, etc.

#NationalParkWeek  continues!  This is from last December when I went up to visit +Lora Lee Chapman and +Roger Mihara .  The late afternoon light on the fresh snow was just so pretty!

I have always loved the trees struggling to survive on the canyon walls.  When you look from a distance the granite looks so sheer and uniform.  But in many places there are little communities of trees here and there.  I adore them and their perseverance.

Continuing on with #NationalParkWeek  and my favorite place - #Yosemite  - This is one of my favorite photos of Half Dome, I've never seen the clouds behave quite like this before - or since.  The just swirled around and around the face.  I'm hoping that Glacier Point Rd opens soon so I can get back up to this spot.

My "Groovy Googlers" post for this week isn't about a single individual.  It's an app.  A really cool one.  First - at this point it's only available to U.S. based non-profits.  I hope that does change - or at least develop a similar program for other countries.

What it does is connect you with various organizations and allow you to donate directly to them.  All of your money goes to the charity.   You can donate as little as a $1 or as much as you wish.  You can browse through all the organizations that have signed up (and been vetted) or just tell the app what you're interested in and allow it to make suggestions.  You can set up matching donations, and other ways to spread the love.

Today kicks off #NationalParkWeek  !  April 16 through the 24th Admission to U.S. National Parks is free.  FREE!!  #Yosemite is nearest and dearest to my heart, so I have to start off with a photo of her.  This isn't the most iconic locations, but it's one of my favorite photos.  It's several years old now, but I still like to drag it out now and then.

I have made it to Friday, and #FridaysAreBokehlicious  .  There are still oodles of lovely wildflowers in bloom (if they aren't being blown away by the crazy wind this morning).  I love these sunny high key poppies I found in one of my favorite canyons.  I think I photograph this exact spot each year.  But this year they are extra thick thanks to the late rains and warmish weather.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

I posted a monochrome version of this way back when, but I also really like the color version.  It's pretty rare that we get summer storms where I live, so when they happen I tend to run around and shoot like crazy :).  This was in July, around 100 degrees, super humid, super windy.  But so much fun!!

And since this is one of my favorite trees....

While this looks like so much fun, I'm not sure I'd want to try it!  I never could figure out water skiing and this looks like water skiing on steroids!  There's only two speeds - bellyflop, or ZOOOOM!

It is lots of fun to watch and photograph though!

THIS is why I'll miss Vin Scully so much next year.

"... talked to players who played in 1905 and every year since..." while I love looking up and talking about baseball statistics... Vin Scully doesn't need to look anything up, and he communicates his knowledge like no one else. I can be hundreds of miles away when I listen to him, but feel like I'm right there at the ballpark.

Many of them were images that didn't make the cut earlier for various reasons.  I've hidden various people and things in here - all of which make me smile.  If you've ever been near me and my camera, you may be in this.  Especially if there was a yellow or green background :D___

You know it's spring when I turn into a flower photographer :)  The wildflowers around me last such a short time, I have to get them while they're out.

This dainty ballerina is from the +UC Santa Cruz Arboretum .  There are so many beautiful plants in bloom - both the natives and plants from other similar climates (mostly New Zealand and Australia) I'm pretty sure she leaps and twirls about when no one is looking!

If you'd prefer the default to be with text and shadow hidden, please send feedback.  Personally, I view an image large... because I want to see the image large

A while back +Michael B. Stuart had a creative way to create a work around for losing the ability to share circles by creating a collection to share interesting folks.  I thought I'd start of by sharing one of Michael's albums of Niagra Falls.

His collection of photographers is here:  https://plus.google.com/u/0/collection/0gq1FB

While my collection will likely be photographer heavy, I'll also share other folks as well!

Throwback Saturday doesn't have the right sound.. but this was 2 years ago today in #Yosemite. It wasn't the biggest or coldest storm, but enough to snow a few inches in the Valley.  There's always the danger of getting clobbered by the snow sliding off the trees as the sun warms things up though!  I think I was pretty wet by the time I got back to my car.

While this past winter was definitely wetter that the one shown here, it's much warmer today - it's supposed to be near 80!  The pretty green hills are already turning tan for the summer.

Waiting for Spring

I am a sucker for oak trees.  I'm a bigger sucker for lone oak trees.  This old fella has been guarding this hill for as long as I can remember.  He's seen better days, but is still standing tall.  This was from a little over a week ago, and already he's starting to show off his summer coat, and is being kept company by many more spring flowers.

I need a bit of sunshine right now.  The morning was so bright and sunny, then in about 5 minutes time the clouds closed in, rain started coming down in buckets, and the winds kicked up to around 30mph or more!

So I'm going to stare at these warm and cozy Goldfields for a bit until I warm up.  Hopefully they are low enough to the ground to escape the brunt of the wind

From my rambles yesterday.  Pretty sure this sign has every definition of irony covered.  :/ First it burned (partly due to the drought).  Then with normal rainfall this year there's been a few mud and rockslides.  It was nice to see a lot of water in the rivers again though.

Happy first day of  #Spring  !!  Friday I took the backroads and checked out the progress of the wildflowers, it's definitely a bumper crop this year!  And they haven't even peaked yet.  Amazing what a normal rainfall season will do!  This is a hillside of poppies and owl's clover.  The lupine's are a little behind, they usually bloom along with the poppies.

Clement's Eye  aka Shiny :)

The SAP Arena is a fun place to shoot at sunset - just make sure to bring good sunglasses, the glare can be quite intense on sunny days!

Pardon the construction zone as I'm rearranging some of my Collections.  This Collection was formerly called "Places I love" And I've renamed it "Yosemite and Central Sierras".  Primarily because I realized that's where all but one post was from, and I wanted the title to be a bit more descriptive.  I'm still figuring this out as I go :)

It'll contain places ranging from the lower foothills on up to the East Side of the Sierras.  I'm also taking the time to intersperse older photos, such as this one from Yosemite Valley a few falls ago.  It's a fantastic time of year for interesting reflections.

Since it is Tuesday, not Monday as I was thinking when I posted earlier (d'oh!) I found this lovely tree cradling Pleiades for #TreeTuesday  .  This was shot a year ago tomorrow, I cannot believe it's been that long!  Somewhere in the area is +Derek Kind , and further up canyon is +Scott Jarvie & +Jared Gant .  I miss this place!  And hope next time I go I don't have the super nasty cold.  :(
