Well looks like its straight back to winter here in Queenstown.. three days of cold and snow forecast.. Fingers crossed for some more scenes like this shot last week in Glenorchy early in the morning with fresh snow on the Humbolt Mountain Range looking across the head of Lake Wakatipu towards Kinloch..

High on the bluffs above the Routeburn Track, looking over the Humboldt Mountains, The Route Burn, The North Branch and the Routeburn Flats. The views are even better than as seen on the track, the exposed Greywacke rock falls steeply to Beech Forest below.. an amazing place to sit and listen to the wind, and watch the clouds fly on by..
I was fortunate to experience this with a fresh dusting of snow on the Mountains.. The wind was bitterly cold, my finger tips numb, but my heart was growing ever warmer with love for this land.. It always feeds my hungry soul, and constantly helps push me on in my photography..

Just back from a beautiful trip into the Routeburn.. Certainly a special time to spend 4 nights in just half of the track exploring.. Lots of places scouted, and I was fortunate to experience the land in several different conditions.. The more I push to just exist amongst nature, the more time I can simply spend watching and listening in appreciation.. I will write more about my time soon.. I can't wait to get back out there again.. I truly love my muse..

"A Long Farewell.."
The Remarkables Mountains in Queenstown, NZ
As the days get longer and warmer here in Queenstown, NZ its safe to say farewell to winter for another year.. It certainly is my favourite time of year photographically, but the long hot days of summer are drawing closer.. and its nice to peel back the winter layers and start working on a tan, along with that summer time sunset and sunrise season..

Lost in the Willows

I have really been enjoying my early mornings out at Lake Hayes recently.. I don't spend long out there but its enough to start the day off on a good footing, finding new ways to frame the willows.. Its a magical place of ever changing reflections, birdlife and intertwined branches that keeps me going back to create and reflect..

Matai Falls in the Catlins is another beautiful waterfall worth a visit.. I spent quite a while time at this location cleaning it up from leaves and branches to make it look its best for this shot.. Certainly got soaked to the bone on this occasion, but Im pretty use to that when I am out shooting.. More fun 'photoshopping' in the real world than on the computer..

"The Great White-Out"

This is the only type of Great White I ever wish to witness at close range..

Overlooking Lake Pukaki, with Mt Cook in the very distance.. took some effort getting to this spot in knee to thigh deep dense snow.. but boy when I came over the crest of the hill to see this view was I simply in awe of mother nature.. Not a single foot print about which was surprising given the snow fall was several days before, a winter wonderland all to my own.. and courtesy of photography you all get a little glimpse into these moments too.. smile emoticon

If you ever want to go to Thailand without leaving the shores of New Zealand.. then head up to Abel Tasman National Park.. next best thing to tropical SE Asian beaches would have to be these in the summer time.. I visited Totaranui for a sunrise shoot and lets just say the beach was rather 'frozen' and my feet were warmer in the water but it certainly was spectacularly beautiful.. and I can only imagine how great it must be in the summertime..

This is an aerial shot taken over the Awaroa Inlet, at low tide this you are able to walk across the inlet, it is actually part of the Abel Tasman Track which is one of New Zealand's Great Walks..

Thanks to Emarn our Pilot from Golden Bay Air for suggesting this add on, we only spent less than 5 minutes circling the area so pretty pleased to come away with a few keepers..

The Riwaka Resurgence, near Motueka, NZ

A short walk from the carpark takes you up a beautiful bush track along side the Riwaka River where is simply appears out of the ground.. It certainly is a unique geological feature, one I haven't seen before, but the hills around Riwaka and Takaka in Golden Bay are filled with some very special features, this being one of them.

I didn't spend too long exploring this area as my father came up to Golden Bay for a few days with me which was great, but the Resurgence certainly impressed me and I'll be back for sure in the future..

"Pukaki Patience..."

Shot at Lake Pukaki, Mackenzie Country, NZ

I played a game of patience with this rather large flock of Pigeons.. The scene was clearly beautiful but it needed something extra to take it some place really special.. Needless to say, I won.. they certainly played a tough game thou and I thought Id loose a few times, just another 10 minutes.. another 10.. another.. eventually I got the extra added element I was looking for on this beautiful back lit winter scene with the summit of Mt Cook visible in the distance.. Super glad the images came out, at the time I was concerned about flaring as I was shooting almost directly toward the sun.. but no need to be concerned.. this image is going to print beautifully..

"Summers Slumber..."

Shot at Sunrise, Lake Alexandrina, Mackenzie Country, NZ

There are some moments in life you look back on and think, its almost too good to be true.. That was the case when I arrived in the Mackenzie Country to some beautiful (but chilly) weather.. My one day shooting on my journey back home and I couldn't have planned it any better.. What I could have planned for was wintery conditions, having been on the road for 25 days in reasonably mild weather, I had to deal with -17 degrees Celsius on this morning with my gloves no where to be found.. My mantra for the morning was 'Pain is Temporary, Photography is Forever'..

I can look back at the many images I took this morning and say that sometimes in life the 'pain' we think we are dealing with really does pail in comparison to what a vast number of people out there have to... more »

I can look back at the many images I took this morning and say that sometimes in life the 'pain' we think we are dealing with really does pail in comparison to what a vast number of people out there have to deal with on a daily basis.. And more often than not it is only temporary.. Push through those mental or physical barriers in life where ever possible, ask for help from others if need be, but guaranteed you'll come out the other side all the better for it.. with memories and many stories to tell as a result of it..

This place was clearly a rabbits winter wonderland with very few people footprints down there. I love the patterns of the rabbits journeys about the upturned boats. I feel blessed to have had such a gorgeous landscape to work with and beautiful radiant dawn hues on this morning.. Sometimes the stars do align..___

"They Came from the Sea.."

Shot at Motukiekie Beach, West Coast, South Island, NZ

There are a couple of areas along the West Coast near the Motukiekie Islands which are crowded by Starfish. In the dark it can be challenging to walk amongst them without standing on them, but I made 100% effort to avoid disrupting them and their surroundings.. I found this little scene and saw potential in it, so i spent a bit of time framing it up and waiting for the right water flow to add interest to the foreground.. Photography Yoga was needed on this shot for both the tripod and myself as I crouched with my backpack on ready to pull my camera incase of any rouge waves..

"Morning Meybille Bay Mist.."

Shot at Meybille Bay, West Coast, NZ

On my journey to Golden Bay I spent a fair bit of time scouting along the roadside around Punakaiki.. Whilst I found a few locations for future shots, the light wasn't right at the right time of day.. On this morning I had a sneaky suspicion that the mist would continue to build, so I hung about for quite a while. As the sun rose higher the mist grew the sun was heating up the forest and land and creating a thick misty haze. It became incredibly muggy due to all the recent rain and the first real decent bit of sunshine I had seen in days, so much so that my lenses began to fog up.

This has to be one of the most beautiful coastal views on the West Coast.

"Kahurangi Oasis.."

Shot in Kahurangi National Park, Karamea, NZ

Walking in the bush whilst it has been pouring with rain for nearly 24hrs has some benefits.. I was fortunate to literally stumble upon this scene whilst I was exploring some areas in Kahurangi National Park near Karamea.. As the sky was dark, I used a 2 second exposure which added a nice painterly feel to the water as the drops fell from the sky.. I had to remove a few dead fell branches from the scene walking slowly and carefully not to churn up the water, but I could see the potential immediately when my eyes saw this..

Kahurangi National Park comes alive in the rain, the rivers swell very quickly and the thick lush rainforest glistens with its coating of fresh water.. If you have never walked in a rainforest in the pouring rain, I highly recommend it.. Take an umbrella (if you are... more »

"Snow in Skippers.."

Shot in Skippers Canyon, Queenstown NZ

A beautiful morning this morning and I felt a huge sense of relief photographically.. I know it sounds strange, but I feel reunited with a long lost friend.. Summer is passing by and I get to spend time in my backyard in my favorite season again..

This morning was a small glimpse of things to come.. Its currently snowing now, about an inch has settled on my balcony.. Its amazing how this land changes presence with the seasons.. who knows might not even get an autumn this year.. I haven't even started my autumn photography schedule.. crazy.. but fun!!.. Mornings like this keep be driven to explore so much more..

"Blowing at Bennets"

Bennets Bluff, Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown

Last one for the day.. a 30 second long exposure shot from Bennets Bluff.. some beautiful light came through the clouds and lit up Pig and Pigeon Islands.. Gave the scene a nice dramatic touch..

Last night, my backyard here in Queenstown, New Zealand was rather beautiful..

The Milky Way rises over the Remarkables with the Aurora Australis still glowing strongly. I used a small hand torch to paint in detail in the foreground to create some foreground interest and depth.

Through the rain and mist, Mitre Peak appears very briefly before being drawn back into the grasp of the darkening evening skies..

"1/80th of a Second.."

Shot at the Earnslaw Burn, NZ

Its hard to put this into perspective.. my guess is these falls are 300-400m perhaps more, maybe less.. Either way in the super gusty wind that was hard to stand upright in at some poin...ts, the water danced about in all directions, I didn't take a lot of photos preferring to watch the show away from the camera..

It is always disappointing looking thru images captured in a location like this, it is so challenging to recreate a sense of feeling that was present at the time.. It is the quest of trying to do justice of a scene like this created in millions of years vs a photograph created in 1/80th of a second.

"Linear Lucidity.."

Shot at the not so blue, Blue Lake, St Bathans, Maniototo, NZ

I woke early to see this linear cloud formation high in the sky through the darkness, I knew it would glow pink as the sunrise, and it didn't disappoint.. Pretty special place that St Bathans.. needless to say, once the sun was fully up it was time to have an early morning swim, so good for the soul..

"Out of Reach"

Shot at Lake Onslow, Otago, NZ

I wanted to get to this hut on the other side of Lake Onslow, but it wasn't possible, a river on one side, and locked bridge access the other.. I saw this band of light hit the slither of land..., and the faint lines of light hitting the dark lake water.. just after I took this shot, the scene was gone as the sun light hit the back ground hills and stayed that way for the next few hours, before the weather completely closed in.. by then it was time to head towards the Old Dunstan Road..

Sunrays over the Remarkables, Queenstown, NZ

Summertime shooting can be hard work with the early starts and late evenings. Always nice to get something to show for those early morning efforts..

"Up.."

Shot in the skies above Queenstown, NZ

This morning I doubted my choice of location for my photo tour and it was evident there was vast colour forming, but my hunch proved correct as we climbed above the clouds on Coronet Peak, and... when this moment happened, and everyone seemed to capture it it was truly beautiful natural moment.. Thanks Sunrise Balloons for being rockstars in the sky this morning, I watched you both pop through the clouds through my viewfinder, absolutely perfect timing!!!!..

"Lost.."

Spent a great day yesterday with a client showing them my beautiful backyard on an all day adventure.. Took a while to frame this composition, but amongst the chaos of the bush I was able to find a composition that focused on the true essence of the moment..
