"The Cove.."

Shot at Ship Creek, West Coast, New Zealand

As the sun began to fall towards the horizon at a remote beach on the West Coast I found this scene and photographed it for a while. Standing in the shade of a huge back lit sea st...ack on a beach that no one had been on that day listening to the waves crashing in was very memorable. I plan on revisiting this location in the future but being a lot more adventurous now that I have a good feeling for the lie of the land.

I promised myself this morning I would go somewhere different today.. but somehow this rock pulls me back to her every morning.. I shot at this location yesterday morning too..

Pretty sure I can claim her as my own given the countless early morning hours Ive spent in her company, no one knows her like I do..

"Snow in Skippers.."

Shot in Skippers Canyon, Queenstown NZ

A beautiful morning this morning and I felt a huge sense of relief photographically.. I know it sounds strange, but I feel reunited with a long lost friend.. Summer is passing by and I get to spend time in my backyard in my favorite season again..

This morning was a small glimpse of things to come.. Its currently snowing now, about an inch has settled on my balcony.. Its amazing how this land changes presence with the seasons.. who knows might not even get an autumn this year.. I haven't even started my autumn photography schedule.. crazy.. but fun!!.. Mornings like this keep be driven to explore so much more..

Last night, my backyard here in Queenstown, New Zealand was rather beautiful..

The Milky Way rises over the Remarkables with the Aurora Australis still glowing strongly. I used a small hand torch to paint in detail in the foreground to create some foreground interest and depth.

"1/80th of a Second.."

Shot at the Earnslaw Burn, NZ

Its hard to put this into perspective.. my guess is these falls are 300-400m perhaps more, maybe less.. Either way in the super gusty wind that was hard to stand upright in at some poin...ts, the water danced about in all directions, I didn't take a lot of photos preferring to watch the show away from the camera..

It is always disappointing looking thru images captured in a location like this, it is so challenging to recreate a sense of feeling that was present at the time.. It is the quest of trying to do justice of a scene like this created in millions of years vs a photograph created in 1/80th of a second.

"Out of Reach"

Shot at Lake Onslow, Otago, NZ

I wanted to get to this hut on the other side of Lake Onslow, but it wasn't possible, a river on one side, and locked bridge access the other.. I saw this band of light hit the slither of land..., and the faint lines of light hitting the dark lake water.. just after I took this shot, the scene was gone as the sun light hit the back ground hills and stayed that way for the next few hours, before the weather completely closed in.. by then it was time to head towards the Old Dunstan Road..

"Up.."

Shot in the skies above Queenstown, NZ

This morning I doubted my choice of location for my photo tour and it was evident there was vast colour forming, but my hunch proved correct as we climbed above the clouds on Coronet Peak, and... when this moment happened, and everyone seemed to capture it it was truly beautiful natural moment.. Thanks Sunrise Balloons for being rockstars in the sky this morning, I watched you both pop through the clouds through my viewfinder, absolutely perfect timing!!!!..

"Amongst these Golden Hills.."

Shot in the Nevis Valley, Central Otago, NZ

Whilst the day was dry and contrasty with the mid-day sun overhead, I've taken a bit of creative license on this one to create an image that represents the feel of the Nevis Valley. A harsh but beautiful environment surrounded on all sides by steep rolling hills covered in large rocky tors, tussock and spear grass. I ho...pe to return to the Valley in a clearing storm to capture a late afternoon sun soaked landscape drenched in fresh rain (sounds easy right?).

Its always hard to know how far to creatively take images sometimes, other times they find a home easily, this one I am not sure if Ive taken it too far.. Time will tell.. I like it for now..

Muriwai's Rush Hour..

Shot at Muriwai Beach Gannet Colony, Auckland, NZ

There is also a Tern Colony up on the cliff tops above Muriwai Beach, moments after I framed up this shot, they all took off to do a lap around the sea stack.. Most... of them all landed back on the cliff tops and the moment was gone, I was very lucky to get this energetic frame of the vast masses of birds in flight in the late afternoon sunlight. These birds are so captivating, I always enjoy my time at Muriwai regardless of the weather, I think it is one of the most powerful and energising locations in all of New Zealand

"Matheson's Mystery..."

Shot at Reflection Island, Lake Matheson, Fox, West Coast, NZ

After a failed morning shooting at this location earlier in the week, zero mountains and no sunlight due to thick heavy cloud cover, I woke at 5:30am to what appeared to be a totally clear sky I ventured into Lake Matheson praying for something to appear in the scene to make it more than just another 'post card... shot'.

The walk to Reflection Island is always enjoyable, even at 5:45am in the morning after having slept the night in the back of my wagon. A brisk 30 minute walk in the dark by head lamp surrounded by strange sounds of birdlife and the crunching of gravel beneath my feet takes you to Reflection Island, the name given to a viewing platform with a beautiful lake front position. A brisk 30 minute walk in the dark by head lamp surrounded by strange sounds of birdlife and the crunching of gravel beneath my feet takes you to Reflection Island, the name given to a viewing platform with a beautiful lake front position. Upon arriving, I quickly shed some layers to 'dry off' then re-layering up for the long cold wait ahead in total solitude. When I arrived there were still no sign of clouds or anything happening in the sky, I crossed my fingers hoping for something unique to eventuate.

Slowly but surely mist began to build and thankfully over the morning I captured many different moods until the mountains were completely shrouded in clouds just before sunrise which was a shame, only for them to reveal themselves in full blue bird skies several hours later, which I was thankful for even thou it meant walking back out to several viewing locations.

For this shot I used an 8 second exposure to capture a bit of the movement of the small wind squal in the foreground that had formed a nice curved pattern as it flowed around the small headland ahead in Lake Matheson. I am looking forward to my next visit to this place, I think shooting at iconic spots like this is easily addictive in the quest to capture something unique of a location that is highly frequented. Its nice to have an image to call my own, and I think this morning provided me with several of those.

"Beyond Words..."

Shot at Lake Paringa, West Coast, NZ

Words cant describe what it is like to stand on the shores of a mist covered still lake at sunrise. The mind plays funny tricks on you as you stare into a magical kaleidoscope of col...our and texture with absolutely no sense of depth perception. I slept tossing and turning with anticipation of a mist ladened still moody morning, and it played out perfectly. Sometimes I just have to chalk it up to a higher power looking out for me on my photographic journey of this special country I call home.

This image is going to print out beautifully and is going straight into my Limited Edition Collection.

The Enchanted...

I feel really blessed to be able to announce that I have been selected as a finalist in the Landscape Category at New Zealand Geographic's Photographer of the Year Award for my image 'The Enchanted' shot in Egmont National Park earlier this year.

The NZ Geo Photographer of the Year is a huge award and to be selected as one of the 22 finalists out of 3,200 entries is very humbling, especially with a few other recognisable photographers names in the mix.

The winner is announced end of October, and there is an outdoor exhibition you can go and see in Christchurch at the moment.

Pop over to http://www.nzgeographic.co.nz/photocomp to see the other finalists and to cast a vote for the 'Peoples Choice'.. Id love it if would take the time to vote for my image if you feel like doing so..

Shot early morning at Koekohe Beach, Moeraki, Otago Coast, NZ

Millions of waves must have crashed against these boulders over the past centauries.. Together they stand steadfast in solidarity against whatever life throws at them.

"Lost in a Day Dream.."

Shot at Roys Bay, Lake Wanaka, NZ

Using a 10stop ND filter along with mother natures subtle mist across the water created this ethereal look on a beautiful winters morning in Lake Wanaka.. I never get tired of visiting this location (along with every other person in the area with a camera!!)

To sit by the shores of this lake listening to the lapping water, feeling the warmth of the winter sun on your face glaring off the waters surface.. It is a great spot to forget about life and get Lost in a Day Dream..

"Mackenzie's Hideaway.."

Shot at Lake Mackenzie, Routeburn Track, Fiordland, NZ

With a huge amount of rain hitting Fiordland in the previous days, the level of Lake Mackenzie was super high, meaning it literally overflowed well above the bushline and I was unable to get to its shore. Thankfully I managed to find a few beautifully framed scenes that looked across the Lake towards Emily Peak in the early morning light.

Been playing around with some new pieces of software recently. Enjoying +onone's Perfect Effects 8.. Seems to offer a lot of flexibility to create unique looks to your image.. I think I prefer it to the Nik Software suite..

"The Misty Meadows.."

Shot near Taumarunui, North Island, NZ

The Sun breaking through the heavy early morning mist.

Just a cool scene I saw as I was driving by. Luckily this time there was a place to pull over in a very convenient and safe place. On road trips sometimes moments appear and disappear in a matter of seconds when you are driving and more often than not there is never anywhere to safely stop the car. On this occasion I was lucky, the thistles in the foreground were a nice addition to what I had seen previously.

"Egmont.."

Shot from the Pouakai Range, Egmont National Park, NZ

A vista like this could easily be one of the most special in the entire country. I only spent a few days at Egmont National Park, but I look forward to spending a lot more time within its boundaries in the future exploring off the beaten track, it definitely impressed me with accessibility, beauty and variety.

TECHNICAL TIP:
This image was captured solely for use in black and white. I used a red filter to intensify the blues (Blue +Red = Blackish).. This is an old technique used in the film days, but works just as well in the digital world. The only downside is, you are committing yourself to a B+W image in post production, but in general I find the B+W image to be smoother in tonal graduations as I am not having to push pixels in post production so much to get the contrast I am after..

"The Journey is the Destination.."

Mt Egmont shot from the Pouakai Range, Egmont National Park, NZ

Ive been thinking about what it is that makes me create photos. Most of the time the camera simply gets in the way, its big heavy, expensi...ve, batteries run out, memory cards get lost, tripods to carry. I feel like a traveling circus a lot of the time when I am out in the field shooting, but for some reason it is all enjoyable. Waiting at 5am in the morning on a misty cold cloudy damp morning by a 'pond' for something to happen, its kinda strange really, yet that space and freedom I feel I know is something amazing, unique and worthwhile.

Whilst I was up at the Pouakai Tarns earlier this morning, it got me thinking. Im here now.. this is life.. now.. right now.. this is all we really have.. and something inside makes me want to share that somehow.. I... more »

Whilst I was up at the Pouakai Tarns earlier this morning, it got me thinking. Im here now.. this is life.. now.. right now.. this is all we really have.. and something inside makes me want to share that somehow.. I guess I understand how blessed I am to see the things I do, and not everyone is able to do so, so sharing those moments with others feels like a way I can pay back the 'universe' for being so good to me. I think if I was never to take another photo in my lifetime I would be ok, but if I was never able to keep exploring I think that would be very tough to deal with.

I have become a lot more selective about what and how I shoot.. On this trip, I spent a lot of time away from my camera soaking in the scene visually rather than thru the lense.

Photography has kept me grounded here in New Zealand and it is something I truly cherish. I feel a real connection to the land here in NZ, to the native birds, to the sky and the sea.. I am glad to have found something to hold onto so early in my life, and something that I know will lead me on a very special journey over the next few decades.. Until then, I guess enjoying the present is all I need to do and everything will be just fine.___

"Cinematic Clarity.."

Shot at the Pouakai Tarns, Egmont National Park, NZ

After a very early morning of about 10m visibility due to heavy cloud cover on the Pouakai Range, as the sun rose, so did moments of clarity. The moments were per...fect, and worth waiting for in the silence, watching the cinematic changes to the landscape as the light and the clouds played together. I couldn't have wished for better photographic conditions on this morning. I left that morning a very happy landscape photographer.

"Walk into Wonderland.."

Shot at The Central Crater, Tongariro National Park, NZ

If you take a risk to step out of your comfort zone, sometimes it pays off.. I could never have imagined such a scene.. I remember thinking when this scene unfolded infront of me that 'no one will ever believe this one!!'.. ...

'Right place right time', 'An educated guess', 'The harder I work the luckier I become'.. Think everything aligned and I feel very blessed to have experienced this moment and to be able to share it with you all.

Sometimes luck favors the brave, I guess..

This shot as a panoramic stitch of 9 images using my amazingly good and affordable Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm f/3.5 lense. I played around with shooting panoramas with this wide angle on my trip north a little bit with varying degrees of success.... more »

The field of view is a lot greater than shooting with a single wide angle lense, and the feel to the images is a lot different. I'll be playing around with this technique in the future.___

"Into Middle Earth.."

Shot high above the Tongariro Crossing, Tongariro National Park, NZ

Ive been on the road in the North Island for over a week now, and just have my first opportunity to post anything here on FB..

Its been a great journey about the central North Island mountains.. with the highlight being a 2 night stay in Hotel Tongariro.. aka the Central Crater (the very bottom left of this image).. this was the view from one of the rather large hills in Hotel's backyard..

The entire vista was well worth the -10C night time temperatures, freezing fog and the journey getting there.. especially the one directly to my left in this image was unbelievable, uncapturable via camera so i didnt even try.. The vista remains in my memories..

This image I share with you..  This is the first of many from my trip, and I plan onblo... more »
