Tessa Schlesinger20,569This is the circle of people I follow. I am not in it (so I'm not promoting myself). I follow them because they are interesting, sincere, have good stuff. Some of them have been here with me from day one.  They don't always interact every day, but I think it really depends on what you're looking for on G+. If you want people to interact with you, well, nobody can interact with everybody who adds them. There just isn't enough time to do that. On the other hand, if you'd like to read someone because they present informative, interesting, entertaining stuff, then this circle is interesting. I think it would appeal to atheists, agnostics, people who love beauty, travel, occasional humor, who are visual, intellectual, thinkers, humanist, and/or liberal. :)2014-05-08 15:31:52186503CC G+

Vũ Phá0So, someone asked me if when would i share a themed circle. I share circles of mixes of different people because i think it brings diversity of the circle.Well people, should i share a themed circle? Well if i would, it would be a different circle though, and it would be less frequent than my other two circles.. (this circle and the snowball one)Well circle Yulia seems kind since she did not remove any people this time, instead she added some!So everyone, this circle obviously contains people. They seem to be pretty normal perhaps.  Hahaha! :-P.Well they engage with people and they have great content in their profiles. Some in here are photographers, philosophers, humorists and everything nice! These guys are not only suggested by me but also suggested by others. So yea, i believe it's a pretty great mix... :-DNote: If ever you want to suggest someone to be included in the future editions of this circle, just tag them in the comments!2014-02-06 16:37:31501537CC G+

The biggest social app is plain old SMS.

This doesn't surprise me, having been deeply intertwined with SMS until recently.  But you wouldn't likely know it listening to news headlines and press releases.

'Canvas Fingerprinting' means wiping your cookies and blocking ads is no longer enough.

[It] works by instructing the visitor’s Web browser to draw a hidden image. Because each computer draws the image slightly differently, the images can be used to assign each user’s device a number that uniquely identifies it.

But fingerprints are unusually hard to block: They can’t be prevented by using standard Web browser privacy settings or using anti-tracking tools such as AdBlock Plus.

The researchers found canvas fingerprinting computer code, primarily written by a company called AddThis, on 5 percent of the top 100,000 websites.

Yes. This. The Duality.

The only two rules of social media you really need

No matter how long you've been connecting on LinkedIn, liking on Facebook or tweeting on Twitter you've probably seen (and maybe even read) countless articles telling you how you should be doing it. Some are incredibly helpful, others unbelievably dull.

When I first started out on Twitter just over 4 years ago I didn't have a clue what I was doing, clearly! (http://smrtl.cl/1n5d6Fc) Few months later and I managed to hop on to a webinar featuring the very wonderful +Laura Fitton otherwise known as @Pistachio(http://smrtl.cl/1n5d9Re) During the webinar she said many things that I've promptly forgotten (sorry) but I've kept trying to apply the two things that did stick with me.

1. Be Yourself
2. Be Useful

Now when I read any of those "how to" articles about social media most of the advice fits into either of these two rules.

I was reminded of these a few days while watching a video featuring +Chef Dennis Littley which prompted this simple graphic.

So two rules, does anyone really need any more than that?

In industries becoming connected, Porter's Differentiation, Cost, and Focus are not mutually exclusive. They can reinforce the creation and capture value.

Paraphrasing Gordon Hui on +Harvard Business Review

One simple example: "making money in the connected space is not limited to physical product sales; other revenue streams become possible after the initial product sale, including value-added services, subscriptions, and apps, which can easily exceed the initial purchase price"

Reputation and Performance Benefits from
Free and Open Source Governance

By uncovering varying pathways to team performance, this study identifies how free and open source practices can support team effectiveness.

This is an excerpt from my forthcoming research project. Please comment, question and suggest improvements:

Emerging research on work teams is demonstrating how team processes can increase organizational performance. The objective of this research is to determine whether free and open source (FOSS) communities differ substantially in team work behaviors from teams working in commercial environments. By uncovering varying pathways to team performance, this study identifies how free and open source and commercial practices can support team effectiveness.

During the last two decades free and open source software has emerged as a major alternative mechanism for coordinating distributed, large-scale software projects. With its roots in collegial academic computer science departments and the non-commercial hacker phenomenon, the FOSS movement emphasizes voluntarism and the sharing source code (Lerner & Tirole, 2002). Programmers working on an FOSS project serve as volunteers and choose the problems they will take on. Contributors to FOSS projects help to produce a public good, available for general use. Standing in contrast to commercial software companies, free and open source software provides a model that challenges transactional models of production (Brock, 2005).

FOSS projects facilitate voluntary collaboration guided by nonmonetary incentives. By eliminating the direct impact of loud monetary incentives, free and open source production leverages quieter, yet effective motivations including learning, reputation and altruism. The success of Linux, Apache, and Wikipedia demonstrates that these motivations can generate substantial marketplace acceptance.

Open Source Governance

Operating under the protection of a nonprofit foundation, FOSS projects intentionally make intellectual property, such as source code, freely available for enhancement by volunteer programmers (Lerner & Tirole, 2002). This novel noncommercial organizational structure enables the comprehensive realization of organic characteristics including decentralization, learning, knowledge sharing and innovation.

Free and open source organizations represent a new governance structure, bazaar governance, characterized by the creativity of voluntary agents collaborating over the Internet (Raymond, 1999). The FOSS form of governance accepts the limitations of uncertainty and bounded rationality and opportunism not through the control of hierarchy but instead by setting up an environment free of formal monitoring and control and instead guided by the incentives of public authorship and the freedom to contribute at will (Demil & Lecocq, 2006). In contrast to the cathedrals of proprietary software development, free and open source communities operate in an unruly, ad hoc bazaar, connecting developers from around the globe via the Internet (Brock, 2005).

Open Source Operations

The low level of traditional control mechanisms allows the bazaar governance model to reach a large pool of contributors and achieve lower production and transaction costs to produce solutions that are freely available for reuse (Demil & Lecocq, 2006). The minimal requirements for admission into an FOSS community allows for a large pool of potential contributors, creating a network effect for value creation.

Community-managed FOSS organizations push decision rights to community members. Open decision-making is characterized by access to source code, the granting of decision-making rights and the transparency of project communications (O’Mahoney, 2007). By making previous work of the community available to all members, especially new members, free and open source governance efficiently generates network externalities (Demil & Lecocq, 2006). The use of representative structures in free and open source communities facilitates high level decision-making and leaves code-level decisions with developers (O’Mahoney, 2007).

As a result, free and open source communities possess an advantage in creating a motivational environment for developers. FOSS governance provides programmers with higher levels of variety, significance, autonomy and feedback, benefits not as freely available in corporate environments (Hertel, 2007). FOSS structures provide non-monetary incentives for programmers without discouraging altruist donors (Franck & Jungwirth, 2003). By facilitating voluntary contributions, free and open source methodologies allow programmers to follow their own preferences (Johnson, 2002). Autonomous participation requires that potential contributors are free to participate, to follow their interests, to develop skills, and to contribute unique solutions (O’Mahoney. 2007). Open source governance structures accomplish this through the interwoven objectives of protecting open licensed software, attracting volunteers, and signaling programmer reputation to potential employers (Franck & Jungwirth, 2003).

Reputation

Some contributors to open source projects derive benefit by using their participation on an FOSS project to signal their value to prospective employers or potential investors (Lerner & Tirole, 2002; Franck & Jungwirth, 2003). The voluntary nature of free and open source projects provides opportunities for programmers to take full responsibility for a component, thus gaining experience and visibility (Lerner & Tirole, 2002). Because both code and programmer credit are publicly displayed, outsiders can measure the performance of individual programmers, providing opportunities to signal quality (Lerner & Tirole, 2002).

Reputation also operates within a FOSS community. Developers with a good reputation attract programming talent. In a voluntary environment, individual contributors follow talent (Franck & Jungwirth, 2003). Conversely, a programmer with a poor reputation may not be able to attract enough volunteers to complete a subproject. Reputation is the currency of the free and open source world. FOSS governance ensures that the magnitude and quality of individual performance is publicly available. Contributors who perform well can gain reputation with peers, potential employers and investors.

What if money didn't have a fixed value, but changed based on reputation?

I told you that your reputation was going to be worth something someday :)

Instead of using pure mathematics to prevent things like the same person spending the same money twice, Document Coin will rely on personal reputation to keep all transactions in order. And each unit of currency created using Document Coin could have different values in different situations. If you use a coin in one place, it might be worth more then if you use it in another.

This is more of a fun concept than an idea ready for prime time, but it make you think.

What 3 words do Millennials use to describe American Politics? One is the F Word.

- They would rather spend money on education than war.
- They think the war on drugs is retarded.
- They are not happy with the widening wealth gap.

Here is an easy way for you to vote on the crazy  #netneutrality  rules the FCC wants to impose on our internet.

My public input on the Net Neutrality rules:

Tom Wheeler @ FCC -

It's a bad idea. It's a slippery slope. Nobody is buying these lanes as 'fast and faster.'

And like the profit addicts huge corporations are, cable companies will convince you next that 3 lanes are cool, and then that an adjustable rate lane would be awesome, and then that normal lane isn't generating revenue and should just be a dirt road.

Don't make the Internet into another battleground for class warfare, Don't dampen innovation in America.

Be a national hero, Tom. Instead of the villain who goes down in history for ducking up the Internet.

Headlines only get you so far. Play the right side of the graph. Create great content.

"The most significant increase in reads are for the Atlantic, Medium, the New York Times, the Guardian and Slate. And power users of Instapaper are reading more and more each month — on average the read rate has increased for them by ~26% every month."

Fake it, until you make it. Want to be something new? Just change your moniker and start acting like one.

Never Let Anyone Tell You Who You Are

Absolute truth there. As soon as any of us lets someone else define who we are, we give away a little piece of ourselves. This is a great way of living, and it's essential for our inner and outer selves. Take charge, and put the world on notice that you define yourself!

Something you have, something you know, and something you are. That's the mantra of multi-factor authentication.

Because who are we really if there is no proof?

It's likely that our phones become a major part of that proof. But they are not perfect authentication devices yet.

"In today’s world still, if you are using a phone with a virtual keyboard, you're forced to type this dreadful, unreadable tiny password on the keyboard, and by the way, you can’t actually read what you just typed. That’s a pretty miserable user experience, which we alluded to earlier."

The notion that the authentication credentials are shared secrets that you know and that are stored on some central server is a very, very 1960s approach to the world. My own belief is that, in fact, we have to move towards a much more device-centric authentication model, where the remote server actually doesn't know your authentication credentials. Again, that comes back to both architecture and standards."

The biggest social app is plain old SMS.

This doesn't surprise me, having been deeply intertwined with SMS until recently.  But you wouldn't likely know it listening to news headlines and press releases.

"Social networks and apps are in blue. Websites are in red. Facebook properties are in deep blue. (All caveats about media-use surveys apply.)"

Don't let an embolism, literally or figuratively, take out your organization. Share your tribal knowledge.

Of course, much of the knowledge might be tacit vs explicit, but you have to start somewhere. If you can't take a vacation without leaving your company in a lurch, you are doing everyone a disservice.
