Happy Friday everyone!
Was just rummaging through old photos and found this one from a nice spring day near Pigeon Point Lighthouse along the San Mateo coast north of my home.
There are some flowers in there, so I'll tag this one with #floralfriday .
Have a great weekend! Any plans? Let's hear them in the comments. Personally, I may go for a stand up paddle on Sunday before visiting Dad for Father's Day.

For +Underwater Thursday , I thought I'd share some good news. My image of a kelp crab off the coast of Big Sur was selected as the cover for the July 2013 Sport Diver magazine cover. So excited!
My only other cover image was also an underwater shot, so it looks like I need to start diving again!

Surf, reflections, and golden sunset light. Pretty nice combination and one that can often be found at San Gregorio State Beach near Half Moon Bay, California.
I'm feeling the need to re-visit this location...soon.
Where's your favorite coastal spot? Feel free to share links to your photos here on G+ and elsewhere to your favorite coastal location. I want to see them!

Sent my D800E to Nikon for AF calibration though NPS (Nikon Professional Services). AF repair is covered under warranty, but Nikon says the image sensor needs to be replaced to the tune of $1838.55 with no explanation as to why. For that price, I might as well pick up a D600 and keep using my "broken" D800E as-is.
I have a call into Nikon and they are looking to get me more information on why they feel the need to screw charge me so much. Yay!
UPDATE: First call back from Customer Service is that the repair department is still not offering a reason for why the sensor needs replacing. Also of note, he said that while the camera is under warranty, the sensor is not. Hmm...

Long exposure of storm clouds passing over the stark, yet beautiful, bristlecone pines located in the White Mountains east of Bishop, California.
I used my Nikon D800E, Nikkor 16-35mm lens, a LEE Big Stopper and .6 Soft GND filter to create this image. Exposure settings were: 120 sec, f13, ISO 50. Back home, I used Lightroom 4 for RAW processing, +Nik Photography 's Silver Efex Pro 2 for the main b&w conversion, and finished if off with some burning and dodging using luminosity masks. Mountain Light Indeed!
The eastern Sierra Nevada mountains make for an amazing backdrop to the myriad of landscapes one can find along CA 395.
This image was made during a memorable sunset atop the table lands outside of Bishop, California after finishing up a workshop in Death Valley with fellow photographer +Joshua Cripps .
We'll be headed back to both areas this fall, once in the Eastern Sierras in October (http://www.seatosummitworkshops.com/workshops/eastern-sierra-photography-workshop/) and once in Death Valley in November (http://www.seatosummitworkshops.com/workshops/death-valley-photography-workshop/)

One way to improve your color photographs is to look for complementary colors as found in the color wheel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_wheel),
So, when SCUBA diving in Fiji, I knew this golden gorgonian sea fan (a colony of cnidarians) would complement the rich blue hues of the water. The school of fish swimming down the reef in the background was a happy accident. :)

Last month I was in Yosemite to lead a group with +Sea to Summit Workshops. The first night, we caught some killer moonbows (lunar rainbows). I had a moment to snap a couple shots of the moonbow at the base of Upper Yosemite Falls.
Needless to say, everyone was pretty happy with the entire experience. Loads of fun!

With clear skies most of the weekend, our Yosemite workshop spent a fair amount of time looking for more intimate landscapes. On Saturday afternoon, we wandered into the woods for some nice light with new growth on some maples. Some participants on the workshop wanted to see a demo on doing panning abstracts, so I obliged. This is one of the results.

Photographic equipment are just tools. How and when you use them is up to each individual. One such tool is the +Singh-Ray Filters Gold-N-Blue polarizer. I picked up this specialty filter about four years ago and admittedly overused it. Although it has a unique look, it can also be overkill and certainly stays in the bag most of the time. But in some cases, it can add an intense color to an otherwise muted scene. Not that every muted scene needs intense color, but it certainly can spice things up! :)

Twin Peaks Panorama @ almost 72 Megapixels
I uploaded this one back in December, but I re-uploaded it to take advantage of G+'s new larger file size allowance.
First attempt failed with a simple message that the file was too big. Banged my head against a wall for 20 minutes searching the web in order to find the file size limit. For those interested, it looks to be 20MB and/or 50 megapixels. I did a couple tests, and I think the file size is the main limiter as I kept this at its ~70 MP size, but reduced the JPG quality to get it under 20MB.
Anyway...
if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel (some don't, so fixing this feature would be nice for those that don't have a scroll wheel), open the image and zoom in and check it out! Full size is 14,686 x 4895.

New Eyes
I've photographed this ledge a few times. I've taken photography workshops here to photograph this ledge a few times as well. Recently, I was here with a client from Florida, and the ocean put on quite a show. Waves were crashing 30-40 feet in the air! Eventually, he settled into a similar composition to what you see here. I liked it and told him so. "You know" I said, "I'm going to have to steal this comp."
And I did two days later when some nice high clouds rolled in at sunset! As +David Richter pointed out to me "the student becomes the teacher".

I tried for the past half hour to get an old Firefox extension to work so I could replace this image (already on my account) with a larger version, but no luck. Certainly would be nice if G+ had a simple "replace image" feature ala flickr. +Brian Matiash is this in your new job description?

The Dance of Light and Darkness
As the full moon rose over Yosemite Valley, the fog and clouds lit up to create a fantastical scene along the face of the granite monolith, El Capitan. Shrouded in mist, this iconic feature stands in stark contrast to the glowing atmosphere surrounding it.
I'm looking forward to heading to Yosemite later this month for a full workshop in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Well, the fog was good this morning bay area folks. And no, this image is not from this morning. I missed it due to inconclusive weather reports when I went to bed at 11pm. Of course, a website I track changed their forecast at 3am to "dense fog only a couple hundred feet high". Oh well, there is always next time.
So I will post this image in memory of my best fog morning from a couple weeks ago. "Above the Clouds".

Finally...
I have been up to the city dozens of times for sunrise. With a 90+ minute drive and $6 in bridge tolls each visit, I pick and choose the days somewhat carefully. And despite witnessing similar conditions to this image, I never came home with photos I was really all that thrilled about.
Until two weeks ago.
Here is one more from a lovely morning up at Hawk Hill in the Marin Headlands. Persistence in landscape photography is paramount to success. And a little luck. :)

My last image post was one of the first images of the morning. This is one of the last. As the sun was getting higher in the sky, I was making fewer and fewer images. Casually chatting away with one of the numerous photographer up at Hawk Hill, I almost missed this flock of seagulls flying above the fog line. One frame with my current composition, and one frame (the one posted here) and then they were gone. In the full resolution file, there is clearly a larger group of birds near the suspension cables to the north and east side of the bridge's north tower.

I was too late, but I did get the earth's shadow, or sometimes called the Belt of Venus, as it rose over the distant La Sal mountains. I encountered a lot of spectacular scenery on my travels to Utah. This is the Green River Overlook at sunset in Canyonlands National Park. Shortly after this photo was taken, my truck slid on some ice and went off the road. Luckily, I got "rescued" a few minutes later by a photographer I chatted with earlier in the day. :)

My last post was of a location in Arches National Park called Balanced Rock. Having been my first time here, I had no idea that it seems as if you can see Balanced Rock from almost anywhere in the park! On a hike to Delicate Arch? Hey look, there's Balanced Rock! Near the entrance to the park at the Courthouse Towers? Hey look, over there, it's Balanced Rock!
So, there I was at sunset in the "Windows Section", and hey look, it's Balanced Rock!

More night photography from my recent travels. This is the famous "Balanced Rock" in Arches National Park. It was probably in the single digits headed towards zero degrees when I set this shot up. It was bitterly cold and I certainly got frustrated at times getting things just right. When I fetched my camera later, it was half way to getting covered in frost!
As a result, this was really the first image I edited when I got back home. Partly to see if it was worth the freezing temps.
To create this image, I stacked about 180 20 second exposures using the Nikon 24mm f1.4 @ f1.8 and ISO 1600. I had another hours worth of stars, but at that point, it seemed too cluttered, so I only used half of what I shot. One additional frame light painting the rock was used at a lower ISO and stopped down to about f5.6 for more depth of field.
