Cassandra on Google Compute Engine
+Eric Johnson has written up a nice tutorial on how to set up Cassandra on Google Compute Engine. Included are some useful scripts to create and verify the cluster, configure Cassandra, and clean it up once you're done. It's ready for you to clone from the repo and start experimenting!
As always, let us know if there are other tutorials or samples that you'd like to see!

The 10 Deadly Sins Against Scalability
+Highscalability recently published a blog on the top 10 mistakes that people make in regards to #scalability. They're good points to consider when designing for scale, to make sure that you're not falling into a pitfall that's going to impact your performance.
The last one (lack of feature flags) is particularly interesting, as having the ability to turn off individual features is something that many people may not consider as affecting scalability. Remotely disabling a high cost feature can be the difference between keeping core functionality or going down entirely.
Regarding the first "sin" against scalability (slow disk I/O), +Andrew Kadatch and +Jay Judkowitz gave a fantastic talk at #io13 that addresses the #GCE approach to getting the best performance out of your disks. We definitely agree that you sh... more »

Tenacious D - Tribute
KNDD played one of their end sessions on the radio yesterday, and it happened to be Tribute. On a whim, I decided to look up the music video for it, and I was not disappointed! This is definitely worth a watch. I love the hilarious lyrics and the improv throughout the song.
And the peculiar thing is this my friends: the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound anything like this song. This is just a tribute!
I guess we'll never hear the greatest song in the world...but we can hear the tribute.

Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus
Did you know about the Tree Octopus? They are rare creatures only found in the PNW (another reason that it's the best bit of the country). The Tree Octopus only spends part of its life in the water, instead preferring terrestrial foliage.
You can read more about it at the site below, or on Wikipedia:

Alert Fellow Scalability Geeks!
Now, you don't have to make lame excuses for watching the Call Me Maybe video. This is totally legit! Apparently, Carly Rae wasn't actually singing about a guy; she was addressing the issues faced by distributed systems.

The network's laggy
But here's my data
So store it maybe"

Surfaces and Essences
It came!!! My new book by Douglas Hofstadter and Emmanuel Sander. It's far heftier than I anticipated, making me wonder what was in the box. I'm seriously excited to read it. It's been far too long since I immersed myself in such an exploratory book. I'm wondering if I can make it through before Google I/O...I bet that's a bet I shouldn't make, considering my experience with GEB.

Early Access Program and Finding Support
As a Thursday surprise, we published a couple of new pages on our documentation that #GCE users may find useful. :)
Early Access Program - Current #GCE users can now apply to our new Early Access program which gives you access to preview some of our upcoming features. You can apply to the program through the form here:
http://developers.google.com/compute/docs/early_access
Getting Help - Sometimes, it can be hard to figure out where you should send your questions or issues. We've created a "Getting Help" page that conveniently lists the channels you can use to send feedback, ask for help, or file reports, based on the type of request.
