A Collection of Clutter

People usually mean well when they say "you're strong, you'll make it through", or at least, I assume so, because I mean well when I say it to others, but it doesn't help to be strong when you're not strong right now and right now is when things need to be stronged through.

Also, it's easy to appear strong when what you're doing doesn't seem to take much effort for you. I suspect that some of the strongest will largely go unnoticed by the general population simply because it's hard to identify what they're fighting against.

Some times, I wish I were unlikeable, that cats hated me on sight, that people avoided me. It would be so much easier to leave and just be done with all this constant battling with the body, with the brain, if there weren't so many connections out there that would haunt me... more »

This looks amusing.

I love a good time-travel story as much as the next princess, don’t get me wrong. But even as a kid, I had to accept the fact that they don’t actually make sense from a purely logical standpoint. I suppose I was an adherent to the “wings of a butterfly” line of thinking before I even knew what that was.

Still, I enjoy the fantasy of being able to go back or forward in time, and so I happily wave away those niggling thoughts about cause and effect and whatnot in favor of enjoying the story

I guess I’m not the only one, because Cayti Bourquin and Yishan Li’s latest Kickstarter project Paradox Girl takes the time-travel trope and turns it on its head, giving us a heroine who jumps around trying to fix her fixes. Or something like that.

I was fortunate to be able to chat a bit with Paradox Girl author Cayti Bourquin about this project and the importance of writing the stories we need to read. Paradox Girl has already met its Kickstarter goal, but you should still consider buying in. Not only will you be getting this fantastic story for yourself, but you’ll be showing the comics industry that there really is a market for more female voices!

Thought experiments...

Earth makes contact with a space-faring species, and while everything goes well at first, at some point the aliens discover that human meat is delicious, at least to their palate. While "culling" of humans is immediately made illegal by most of the alien species' various governments, not all bother to do so.

Polls show most individuals of the alien race are opposed to killing a sentient species, but they also show a majority of them admit to being "curious" (since human is supposed to taste so good) and say, while they wouldn't seek it out, they would probably try it once if it were already on a menu.

A HUGE black market emerges, with outlaws appearing at random several times a month to take people, mostly young adults and children (not so much the elderly), from their homes, schools, places of work, and so on, even shopping malls, with a focus on large metropolitan areas (where all the people are) in the developed world (where they are fattest and healthiest).

While the earth struggles with a countermeasure against the more technologically advanced assault, they demand the largest alien governments form a coalition and intervene to stop their own kind, which they are reluctant to do given the amount of time and resources necessary to effectively cordon an entire planet. While debate among the aliens rages, no immediate action is taken.

As a stop-gap, human governments around the world begin offering low-dose chemotherapy pills to their population to be taken daily as this makes us taste terrible, and poor taste is a mostly effective deterrent (against all but the most hardcore raiders, who are killing for sport as much as money) but has the usual side effects, albeit lighter from the lower dose: daily nausea, periodic vomiting, moderate to severe hair loss, fatigue, neutropenia leading to recurrent infections, etc. Chronic exposure also significantly shortens lifespan. Global productivity plummets, leading to severe recession, unemployment, and strain. Several debt-saddled governments collapse.

But the raiders are undeterred. They switch to rural and outlying areas in less developed countries, which are disproportionately brown skinned, where distribution of the drug is too expensive for local governments or prohibitively costly to distribute, such as the Congo and Amazon and the mountains of Tibet and Afghanistan. The cost-per-pound of human flesh rises sharply as culling costs increase, but the market persists.

Depleted of rural labor, either directly by culling or indirectly by flight to the cities, global farm output decreases, precipitating a food crisis in many regions. The world economy takes a second major hit and so suffers another Great Depression. Richer, more developed nations invade their lesser developed neighbors in order to protect their economic interests, grab resources, and "stabilize the situation."  Brief but recurrent (and chronic) intercontinental conflict ensues. The geopolitical map of the world changes completely.

Activists call for a ban on the drug, urging us to stand united as a species against a common enemy, noting that they outnumber us 10:1 and it does us no good to kill each other.

Critics discover a nascent moral dilemma. Where a population sees mixed use of the drug, paradoxically, raids INCREASE. The raiders are forced to cull greater numbers as drug use increases until the point it nears saturation, which is the only effective deterrent. This is because urban centers are rich in healthy, fat-rich meat, so its cheaper for the raiders to just take more and more from densely populated areas to cover their loses -- unsalable, distasteful meat.

Therefore, anything less than near-total use in a population results in MORE deaths, and the people who are taking it -- and so poisoning themselves -- actually achieve NO benefit. They're just as likely to be culled as the rest of us. The aliens just dispose of them prior to transit, usually by jettisoning them into space.

A political debate emerges. Should we force people to take a drug that causes vomiting, fatigue, repeated infections, and a shortened lifespan?

Proponents show videos of screaming schoolchildren, each with their own hopes and dreams for the future, being netted by flying drone ships and whisked away into space where they will adorn the menu in a posh alien restaurant. Much like veal, pre-pubertal children are the most tender and fetch the highest price per kilogram, although adults are also taken to supply the "mid-range" market. Hence, places where there are high concentrations of families with young children are the biggest (but not the only) targets: elementary and middle schools, shopping malls, sports fields, etc. The second-biggest target is universities. Finally, busy urban centers.

Opponents show videos of people in Africa, central Asia, and South America being taken, sometimes literally ripped from each others' arms, screaming and in tears. They ask, should these people be made to suffer -- perhaps to the point of genocide, resulting in the loss of unique languages and cultures -- simply because they're dirt poor, or because their traditional homes are too remote?

How do you vote?

Relevant to many, and not just writers, but writers are what this post is primarily for.

+Lisa Cohen +Mike Reeves-McMillan you guys might find this opinion piece interesting re: the article you shared earlier. An excerpt:

"Last year, I went to a writing conference in Boston. One of the first panel discussions was about how a writer claims authority, how it is that a writer asserts that he or she possesses the expertise to write about a topic, and how concomitantly the editor reading through the submission slush pile can determine whether the writer is someone who can claim authority as a writer.

One of the panelists, an editor, offered that the first thing he looked for when skimming through the cover letter was whether the writer possessed an MFA. He did this, he hastened to qualify, not because it guaranteed that the submitter would be a better writer, but because taking a year or two off out of one’s life to dedicate oneself to writing proved that one was serious as a writer. I came off my chair in anger—how could he assert such a thing? My friend pulled me back down, but I continued to fume. Who has more dedication: the person who has the financial wherewithal to spend time in a writing program, or the writer who writes despite having to work full-time, early in the morning, with absolutely no one but themselves for motivation? As another panel member offered their method for detecting “dedication,” I flashed back to sitting with Fred Busch as he recounted stories from his early days of working all day and spending time with his wife and son in the early evening and then taking the typewriter into the bathroom, so as not to wake his sleeping family, and writing as much as he could before fatigue demanded he go to bed. How much more dedication did one need to prove beyond that? But that’s not exactly something you can put on a resume. That panelist’s misguided assumption, that an MFA necessarily connotes greater dedication to writing, reveals an all too common blindness to the easy privilege of those with financial security."___Relevant to many, and not just writers, but writers are what this post is primarily for.

From the award-winning author of the Outlaw King series comes another harrowing adventure in the grand tradition of Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Charlaine Harris.

Robin Martine has come a long way.

She's not your usual college-age girl. More often than not, Robin's washing a load of gory clothes at the laundromat, or down at the lake throwing hatchets at pumpkins. She lives in an old van, collects swords, and dyes her mohawk blue.

Also, she kills witches for a living on YouTube.

You see, Robin's life was turned upside down by those hideous banshees from Hell. She spent high-school in a psych ward, drugged out of her head for telling the cops her mother Annie was murdered with magic. Magic from a witch named Marilyn Cutty.

After a 3-year warpath across America, she's come home to end Cutty for good.

But she'll have to battle hog-monsters, a city full of raving maniacs, and a killer henchman called the "Serpent" if she wants to end the coven's reign over the town of Blackfield once and for all.

Some times, I wish I were unlikeable, that cats hated me on sight, that people avoided me. It would be so much easier to leave and just be done with all this constant battling with the body, with the brain, if there weren't so many connections out there that would haunt me into ghosthood. If I'm going to trade up to ectoplasm, I want to be free to haunt data centres and historical monuments and sushi restaurants. Right now, I'm very not strong, but I am anchored by a strong fear of racking up more regret. So, I say this with much fondness and love, but fuck all y'all connections. I'm worn out, I want to be done. Probably please don't go away though, I may yet pull out of this.

When nature docu hosts become annoying, disaster movies are good for keeping the brain quiet enough to allow for that sleep your grainy eyes are calling for. Also, it must be some unspoken rule that Asylum films must always get one star. One Star Only, si vous plait.

If you've had an accident, standing in the middle of the intersection and screaming at each other is only marginally better than running, then returning to stand in the middle of the intersection and screaming at each other. Also, stay the fuck off my lawn while you do so. And try to glare a bit less ominously when I peek my head out the door to see if I need to call an ambulance. It's your fault if we have six more weeks of no snow. :P

I don't think a dishwasher would help. I do need to do dishes. And take out the trash. And clean the bathroom. And sweep up the cat hair. Maybe take up yarn making. However, I did finally get a load of laundry done.

I wish I'd not had so many horrible experiences with medication, with trying to find MH care in general, with insurance companies in general. It's really hard to not see every future attempt ending in failure, which terrifies me, because I know I need help, but I can't ever seem to get to it, unless I'm already doing well enough that it's not show-stopping.

I'm tired of my body feeling vaguely functional only when my brain is busy taking a giant chemical shit, and the brain jumping in the shower spryly only when the body is feeling overwhelmingly dysfunctional.

I'm tired of the emotional distancing I feel happening, though I have to say, the death fantasies have been a nice change, though entirely unrealistic given our not-so-fantasy world. Little chance of finding a kindly dragon to trade your life as food to in exchange for protection and care of your loved ones. Though, I'm probably equivalent to junk food these days so even given dragons, that's not likely, I miss my muscle mass.

It hurts to see so many others I care about struggling more lately too. I wish I had magic wands for all of you. Assholes. I might be willing to give up others caring for me, but I wouldn't want to give up caring for others. Fuckers.

Tired of not being able to get things fixed. Can't get the filters out of the furnace to change them, can't unscrew the light fixtures to change bulbs that I had been able to change in the last year, can't get Bits to stop taking down blinds, can't get a toilet flapper installed properly, can't hold myself together long enough to get anything else done, it's not fucking snowing like it's supposed to be, fuckityfuckingfuckall.

Do Google TV boxes do wireless tv connections? I've dreams of relocating my living room to a smaller caveroom, but can't even begin to grasp tech I've not used for long enough I don't have to think about it.

Tired of fighting to keep breathing, but don't want to regret letting people down. This isn't living, it's hell, and it's been a while since it's been this bad for this long. Tired of crying because someone checked up on me. Tired of being mired in my own mind with no energy or interest in escaping. Tired of hurting. Tired of the headaches and sinus pain crying leaves. Tired of being unable to return favours or give people anything but my own psychotic stew. Tired of being unable to manage looking, complex thoughts or attention, of being unable to work, or keep up with personal business issues, or even personal projects. Tired of the postpeople continuing to deliver mail for people that haven't been here in ages no matter how clear I make it. Tired of speaking a different kind of English than everyone else. It's exhausting having to constantly correct and re-explain thoughts.

I know there's all these reasons to live, and I resent the fuck out of them, I just want to die, but I can't, and I'm too tired to be angry. So sullen weakass glares are all you get.

Back to my cave, hope y'all have a great Wednesday. No, there is no glitter this day, week, month, quarter, fiscal year. I just want to be as worthless as I feel so I can give in to my weakness.

Apologies in advance for any swypos.

I almost smiled, then pondered how many people would recognize it.
